The course was mostly laborations which overall were good, with a few exceptions. The course were very much appreciated overall. 3 (5) The lectures were only useful for some of the laboration. The laborations could be made without the lectures because all the information needed could be found the laboration compendium. It would be good to know which lectures that were voluntary. The examiner comments that there are many students from much different background knowledge. The lectures are not obligatory, there just there to help the students before the laborations. Will clearify which lectures that are voluntary and which the student should, for their own best, attend. Most equipment were broken and could not be used to learn the laboration, like the zeeman effect had some broken parts, fiber optics cutting device didn t work, analyses of gamma spectrum had no radiation, optical pumping reverse coilcurrent was broken, scanning tunneling microscopy gave no real result for most groups (even though the tip had been changed several times). The assistants knew this and aid they were going to do something about it, but still the next group had to deal with the same problems. Some compendiums hade mistakes that the assistants were aware of but hadn t done anything about. Vacuum system: Easy and good laboration with a curious and good assistant that had good knowledge about the subject. Mass spectroscopy: Easy and good laboration with a curious and good assistant that had good knowledge about the subject. Holography: Fun and cool laboration with a good assistant. Curie and Ising: One of the computers was very slow otherwise a very good laboration with a very good assistant that cared about the students learning. X-ray diffractrometry: Very good and useful for other courses. The assistant was very good at explaining and had a lot of knowledge that he shared with the students. Laue camera: Fun and rewarding lab with a great assistant, good to have the primitive lattice cell to show on.
4 (5) Analyses of gamma spectrum: Good laboration but it needed more radiative samples for better and faster results. Good assistant. Emission spectroscopy: Rewarding and fun laboration with a very good assistant. Optical pumping: This laboration needs to be improved a lot, it did not have anything to do with optical pumping (or didn t teach you anything of the subject anyways) it was more learning how to use the equipment in the right order to get a good image. The compendium did not contain ANY information of how to use the equipment and the labassistant did not care to inform the students properly. Scanning tunneling microscopy: This laboration needs improvements as well, the equipment did not work. The assistant could not inform the student of how it worked or what was happening. Most students didn t get any useful images, and the saving process was useless. Fiber optics: Bad equipment that was not accurate, most of the lab was about peeling off the cables. The assistant was better informed in the end compared to the beginning, she didn t feel engaged in the subject. Zeeman effect: Broken equipment, it was not possible to measure the magnetic field. The assistant was again better informed in the end compared to the beginning, and she still didn t feel engaged in the subject. The examinor comments that some machines are old and will sandly break once in a while, and reservparts aren't sold for all of these any more. These laborations will be remade to the next year. It is a problem that the assistants are on different levels, but it's hard to fix since most assistants differ from year to year. It's up to the assistants to controll that the compendiums are up-to-date. Will talk to the assistants as well as add information on the lectures of how some equipment are used, alternatively give out copys of the user-manuals. The examinor asks if there are any unneccicary lab, to which the students answer that the Vaccum system lab and the emission spectroscopy could be fused together. The examinor will tell the students to speak to the examinor if there is anything wrong, since when the students speak to the assistants, some assistants does not transfer the information to the examinor. The examinor are very grateful for all the feedback and the students says that the laborations felt very useful. Examination Examinationens utformning, relevans, nivå och koppling till kursinnehållet. Fun with reports. It was enough to write 4 reports. Feedback under kursens moment Återkoppling och respons på studenternas insatser under olika moment och dess inverkan på studenternas framtida prestationer. The assistants gave different amounts of feedback, of which, more feedback was appreciated. No feedback was given on the optical pumping laboration. The examinor will ask the assistants to give the students more feedback. Studiemiljö Åsikter gällande studieplatser, schemaläggning, ventilation och sittplatser under kursens olika moment. Schedule and rooms were good. Samläsning Åsikter om huruvida alla studenter, oavsett programtillhörighet, har haft samma möjlighet att tillgodogöra sig innehållet i kursen samt hur samläsning med studenter från andra program har påverkat kursen i sin helhet. Did not matter who you studied with. Studenternas övriga kommentarer A very neccicary and interesting course! Examinatorns övriga kommentarer Many changes will take place to the next year. The course focuses more on how to work in a lab and less on how to write reports. Sadly, how good the lab will be depends on how well it works, which is hard to know beforehand.
