WHO opens public consultation on draft sugars guideline WHO s current recommendation, from 2002, is that sugars should make up less than 10% of total energy intake per day. The new draft guideline also proposes that sugars should be less than 10% of total energy intake per day. It further suggests that a reduction to below 5% of total energy intake per day would have additional benefits. Five per cent of total energy intake is equivalent to around 25 grams (around 6 teaspoons) of sugar per day for an adult of normal Body Mass Index (BMI). http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/notes/2014/consultation-sugar-guideline/en/ 2014-12-10 6
WHO opens public consultation on draft sugars guideline Papers published with findings of two systematic reviews (analyses of published scientific studies) commissioned by WHO that informed the development of the draft guidelines: Dietary sugars and body weight: systematic review and metaanalyses of randomised controlled trials and cohort studies (TeMorenga et al. BMJ 2012;345:e7492) Effect on caries of restricting sugars intake: Systematic review to inform WHO guidelines (Moynihan & Kelly. Effect on Caries of Restricting Sugars Intake: Systematic Review to Inform WHO Guidelines From 5,990 papers identified, 55 studies were eligible 3 intervention, 8 cohort, 20 population, and 24 cross-sectional. Of the studies, 42 out of 50 of those in children and 5 out of 5 in adults reported at least one positive association between sugars and caries. There is evidence of moderate quality showing that caries is lower when free-sugars intake is < 10% E. With the < 5% E cutoff, a significant relationship was observed, but the evidence was judged to be of very low quality. Moynihan & Kelly. J Dent Res 2014;93(1):8-1 2014-12-10 8
Burt & Pai. J Dent Educ 2001;65(10):1017-23 Anderson et al. Dietary sugars and body weight: systematic review and meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials and cohort studies Trials in children, which involved recommendations to reduce intake of sugar sweetened foods and beverages, had low participant compliance to dietary advice; these trials showed no overall change in body weight. However, in relation to intakes of sugar sweetened beverages after one year follow-up in prospective studies, the odds ratio for being overweight or obese increased was 1.55 (1.32 to 1.82) among groups with the highest [= daily consumption] intake compared with those with the lowest intake. TeMorenga et al. BMJ 2012;345:e7492 2014-12-10 12
Draft Carbohydrates and Health report Scientific consultation: 26 June to 1 September 2014 The dietary reference value for free sugars should be set at a population average of around 5% of dietary energy for age-groups from 2.0 years upwards. This is based on the need to limit free sugars to no more than 10% of total energy intake at an individual level, which is likely to lead to a population average free sugars intake of around 5% of total energy. 2014-12-10 13

The Sugar Reduction Summit; Science, Policy and Public Health Scientists and public health professionals have decried the high levels of hidden sugar found in everyday foods from breads to sauces, and drawn??? parallels between the tobacco and food industries, invoking the rising tide of obesity and questioning whether sugar taxation and additional regulation is an inevitable necessity. Leading health experts argue that it s a completely unnecessary nutrient which can be easily removed and that a 30% reduction in added sugar would reduce calorie-intake sufficiently to halt the obesity epidemic. http://www.thesugarreductionsummit.co.uk/ 2014-12-10 26
