2007-08 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets Host West Virginia Wesleyan in Home Opener VMI Plays First of 14 Home Games in 100th Season of Keydet Basketball VMI Basketball opened its 100th Season by traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo. to participate in the Air Force Classic. The Keydets dropped contests to Northern Colorado (104-97) and Dartmouth (98-87). The trip marked the first-ever trip to Colorado for the program, and was the first time the Keydets have played West of the Mississippi since beginning the season at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska to kick off the 2003-04 season. A season after leading the nation in points (100.9), assists (20.6), steals (14.8) and three-pointers (13.4) per game, the Keydets boast the return of three of their top four scorers, including senior forward Reggie Williams, who led the nation in scoring at 28.1 points per game, and junior guard Travis Holmes, who led the country with 3.4 steals per outing. In all, the Keydets return four starters and seven letterwinners, while welcoming six freshmen into the fray. The Keydets made a stunning run to the Big South Championship Finals last season with upset wins over thirdseeded Liberty and second-seeded High Point. The sixth-seeded Keydets then came up three points short of topseeded Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. in the Final, televised on ESPN. This season, the Keydets will enter the year with their highest preseason ranking in over 30 years, coming in third in the Big South s Preseason Poll. High Point (216 pts.) edged out Winthrop (214) by two points in the voting, while the Keydets (147) were voted ahead of Coastal Carolina (134), UNC Asheville, Liberty, Charleston Southern and Radford. Tale Of The Tape VMI WVWC 92.0 Points Per Game 0.0 Senior forward Reggie Williams has been selected as one of 50 preseason nominees for the John Wooden Award, given annually to college basketball s top player. Williams, who was also voted to the Big South Conference s Preseason All-Conference team, not only led the nation in scoring a year ago, but also ranked in the top four in the Big South in rebounding (4th), FG% (3rd), and assists (3rd). Williams established new Big South and VMI records for points in a season and is on track to become the all-time leading scorer in Big South history, supplanting Liberty s Larry Blair, who overtook the record last season. A VMI win against West Virginia Wesleyan would: Mark the second straight win in a home opener by the Keydets, joining VMI s 156-95 against Virginia Intermont last season. Head coach Duggar Baucom is 1-1 in home openers at VMI, while the Keydets are 22-2 in their last 24 home openers, dating back to 1983-84. Improve VMI s record to 4-1 all-time against the Bobcats in a series that began in 1920. Allow the Keydets to avoid their third 0-3 start in five years. Give VMI their first win against a team from West Virginia since defeating West Virginia Tech at home on December 12, 1997 by a score of 95-54. KEYDETS AT A GLANCE Probable Starters Pos. # Player Yr. The series dates back to 1920, when the Keydets won a 30-15 contest. The teams then played a home-andhome in the 1953-54 season, with the Bobcats winning on their home floor 84-81, while the Keydets held serve as well, 72-64. The teams last met in VMI s season opener in 1971, winning 95-78. Let s Get It Started: When the Keydets took on Northern Colorado to start the season at the Air Force Classic, it marked the earliest start in the VMI s 99-year history. VMI opened up play on Nov. 9 this season, a day ahead of when they started last season, on Nov. 10 against Ohio State. Rocky Mountain Lows: Playing for the first time ever in Colorado, the Keydets lost both contests that they played at the Air Force Classic. Against Northern Colorado in the opener, VMI allowed the Bears to shoot 68.0% from the field, the third-highest total since Coach Duggar Baucom began running his up-tempo style of play in the beginning of last season. Against Dartmouth the next night, VMI shot only 19.2% (5-for-26) from beyond the arc. That was the fewest three-pointers and the worst three-point percentage by the Keydets since the beginning of last season also. Reggie Williams Redux: Last season, Reggie Williams took the world of College Basketball by storm, topping the national scoring charts on his way to several recognitions. This season, he has already been honored with numerous preseason honors, including VMI s first ever nomination for the John R. Wooden Award, college basketball s most prestigious honor. After leading the country with a 28.1 points-per-game average, Williams was not only named to the Big South s All-Conference First Team, but also received recognition from the NABC, who tabbed the forward to their District 4 Second Team. A season ago, Williams became the first VMI player to lead the nation in scoring since Jason Conley became the first freshman in NCAA history to lead Division I in scoring with a 29.3 average during the 2001-02 season. Williams now sits 3rd on the school's scoring list with 1,902 points. In the Big South recordbook, Williams currently sits 4th in career points, needing 310 points to surpass Larry Blair s Big South-record total of 2,211 career points. In 89 career contests, Williams has averaged 21.4 points per outing, eclipsing the 20-point mark 44 times while topping 30 points 17 times. He is the only Keydet to post multiple 40-point games, as he did so four times in 2006-07. He is also the only player in Big South history to have as many as three 40-plus point games in his career. Keydets Picked Third In Big South Poll: VMI s strong finish in the Big South Tournament last year remained a vivid memory for many of the conference basketball community, as the Keydets were picked third in the Conference s men s basketball preseason poll. It s the highest a VMI basketball team has been picked in a conference preseason poll in over 30 years. The Keydets received 147 points in the preseason poll
for third place behind High Point which was edged Winthrop for the top spot with 216 points and 15 first place votes and Winthrop's 214 points and 14 first place votes. It is a reversal from a season ago, when the Keydets were picked last in the Conference s Preseason Poll. Baucom Rewarded With Contract Extension: Late in the offseason, VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom agreed to a contract extension to coach Keydet Basketball through the 2011 season. Baucom enters his third season as VMI head basketball coach this season after having been named to the post on April 14, 2005. His original four-year contract ran through the 2009 season. The new deal includes a salary raise and other benefits. I am extremely happy that Duggar Baucom has accepted our offer for a contact extension, said VMI Athletic Director Donny White. Under his leadership, our team has made great strides and I feel that he can make us a consistent winner. In 2006-07, Baucom led his second-year team to a banner season and national acclaim. Using an up-tempo system for the season, the Keydets, picked to finish last in the preseason poll, won their most games (14) in nine years and advanced to the championship game of the Big South Tournament. The Keydets also set new NCAA season marks in three-pointers, both made and attempted (442 of 1383), 3-pointers made per game (13.4), 3-pointers attempted per game (41.9) and total steals (490). Exhibition Recap: VMI played their lone exhibition contest of the 2007-08 preseason against crosstown neighbors Washington & Lee, defeating the Generals 98-81. Senior forward Reggie Williams scored 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Keydets, while junior guard Chavis Holmes hit six of 11 from 3-point range and finished with 23 points. Also in double figures for the Keydets was freshman guard Christian Hunter (14), freshman guard Austin Kenon (11), and junior guard Travis Holmes (10). I thought we played in spurts, said VMI head coach Duggar Baucom. When we did play to our potential, I thought we were pretty good, but other times when we played halfway I didn t like our execution or our effort at times. It gives us a lot of things to work on. That s what exhibitions are for. Fresh Faces Everywhere: This season, the Keydets boast six freshmen on their roster, joining with seven returning players. The total marks the most freshmen on a VMI Basketball team since the 1991-92 campaign, when seven freshmen suited up for the Keydets. Single-Season Turnaround: After winning only seven games in 2005-06, the Keydets doubled that total by winning 14 a year ago. The seven-win swing is the largest single-season turnaround since the Keydets won 18 games in 1995-96 after winning only ten the year before. In the 99-year history of VMI basketball, the team has generated a larger turnaround only three times. The 1975-76 team won 22 games after winning 13 the year previous, while the 1984-85 team also saw an eight-game turnaround, joining the 1995-96 team. Second Year Magic? There's something about Duggar Baucom and the second year of his coaching tenure. At Division II Tusculum in 2004-05, Baucom led the Pioneers to the conference championship game and eventually to the NCAA tournament. In his second year as VMI head coach, Baucom led the Keydets to the Big South Championship game for the first time since the 1984-85 campaign. Numbers Jump: The 2006-07 edition of the VMI basketball team turned more than a few heads, as the program garnered national recognition after producing some eye-popping numbers. The team averaged 100.9 points on 81.7 shots, collecting 20.6 assists and 14.8 steals per outing. From beyond the arc, the Keydets averaged 41.9 attempts per game, hitting on 13.4 of those. A year previous, VMI averaged 71.3 points for the year, 14.2 assists, 7.3 steals, and averaged 57.4 shots per game. A Merry Band of Thieves VMI blew away several records relating to steals a season ago. In their 33 contests, VMI boasted 490 thefts, averaging 14.85 per outing. That is a new VMI school record for steals in a season (previously 297), while it also marks a new Big South record for steals in a season, surpassing the previous high of 376 by Liberty in 1999-00. The Keydets posted at least 20 steals in six different games, including 35 against Virginia Intermont, setting a new VMI record in the process. Individually, Travis Holmes led the country in steals following a school and Big South record 11 thefts against Bridgewater on Jan. 18. He averaged 3.4 steals per contest, while his twin brother Chavis ranks fifth in the country with 2.8 spg. They also rank 1-2 in the Big South in the category. Travis also broke the VMI single-season mark for steals with 111, passing Jason Conley who had 82 in the 2001-02 season. Chavis wrapped up his sophomore season with the second-most in school history with 90. 1,500/500 Club: With his six rebounds against Radford on Jan. 25, Reggie Williams became the sixth player in Big South history with 1,500 points and 500 rebounds. Chavis on Offense, Travis on Defense Identical twins Chavis and Travis Holmes made their presence known as sophomores, in particular with Chavis doing so on the offensive end and Travis leading the way on defense. Chavis stepped up his scoring in a dramatic way over the final half of the season, going over the 20-point mark in ten of the last 19 contests while raising scoring average to 19.2 points per game, ranking him 4th in the Big South and in the top 35 nationally. He also scored in double-figures in 28 straight outings. Meanwhile, Travis, who scored in double figures in 12 straight outings, got things going on the defensive end. In back-to-back games in mid- January, Travis set a new career-high by blocking three shots against High Point and Charleston Southern. But that paled in comparison to his work in stealing the ball. Travis surged to the national lead in steals when he gathered a Big South and schoolrecord 11 steals in a 125-95 win over Bridgewater. Travis, who led the nation with 3.4 steals per contest, surpassed Jason Bell s ten steals logged against Furman (87-81, W) at Cameron Hall on February 10, 1998 with his outing against Bridgewater. However, he was not the only Holmes to log a high in steals against the Eagles, as Chavis had a career-high nine steals that night as well. Dynamic Duo: Averaging a combined 47.3 points per game, VMI s Reggie Williams & Chavis Holmes were far and away the nation s top-scoring duo. But they also made some other history as well. Williams (28.1 ppg) and Holmes (19.2) overtook the VMI record for most points by a set of teammates, surpassing Charlie Schmaus (25.9) & Robin Porter (20.6), who combined to average 46.5 points per game in the 1965-66 campaign. High V elocity: With its high-flying tempo, VMI led the nation in scoring with a 100.9 points-per-game average. In their 33 games, the Keydets surpassed the century mark in scoring 17 times, and twice came up just short by scoring 99. In the ten years prior, VMI had eclipsed the 100-point plateau in a game seven times. Close, But No Cigar: Despite a 14-19 mark, the Keydets were in just about every contest last season. VMI went winless on a five game road swing in late Novemberearly December, but you can t say the Keydets didn t compete. VMI dropped the five games by a margin of 4.2 points. Included in the string were two-point losses to JMU (89-87) and Jacksonville State (87-85). The team scored its first win in a close game on Jan. 22, when they defeated UNC Asheville 102-97, and its second win in such a game in the Big South Quarterfinals, defeating 2007-08 Honors Reggie Williams * Listed as nominee for John Wooden Award * CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid- Major All-America Team * Big South Conference Preseason All-Conference Team * Listed on CollegeHoops.net Mid- Major Stars * CollegeHoops.net Preseason All- Conference First Team * CollegeHoops.net Preseason Top 100 Players * Athlon Sports Preseason All- Conference First Team * Air Force Classic All-Tournament Team Chavis Holmes * CollegeHoops.net Preseason All- Conference Second Team Travis Holmes * CollegeHoops.net Preseason All- Conference Second Team Liberty 79-78. No Sophomore Slump Here: As head coach Duggar Baucom wrapped up his second season in Lexington, he become the fourth consecutive VMI coach to improve his firstyear win total in his sophomore campaign in Lexington. Marty Fletcher saw a six-win improvement in the 1983-84 season, while Joe Cantafio s 13-17 season in 1987-88 was a two-win improvement over the year before. Baucom s predecessor, Bart Bellairs, engineered an impressive 18-10 season in 1995-96 in his sophomore campaign, representing an eight-win improvement from his first season, en route to a semifinal showing in the Southern Conference tournament. In 2006-07, the Keydets boasted 14 wins, the program s highest mark since 1997-98, when the team went 14-13.
