1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets to Take on CSU, Coastal Carolina in Crucial Matchups Both CSU and Coastal Are Currently in Line to Host a First Round BSC Tournament Game VMI will embark upon one of its biggest challenges this season, as the Keydets travel to Charleston and Conway, S.C., for a pair of contests this weekend. The Keydets will face the Charleston Southern Bucs Thursday at 7:30 p.m., before battling the league-leading Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Saturday afternoon in Conway. Both games will be shown on the Big South Network ( will have an audio broadcast on VMIKeydets.com and will feature live stats provided by the host schools. The Keydets come off a 1-1 homestand, which saw VMI defeat Gardner-Webb on Thursday evening before falling to UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon. In the game with Gardner-Webb, senior Austin Kenon became the Keydets all-time leading three-point shooter, surpassing Chavis Holmes 09 with a trey early in the contest. Before he was held to 10 points Saturday, Kenon had come in averaging 25.8 points per game and shooting 62.5% from the floor over the past two weeks. With the second half of the Big South season now underway, VMI sits in the #6 spot in the league standings, one game behind fourth-place Charleston Southern. Coastal Carolina, riding a perfect conference mark, is currently at the top of the Big South, with Liberty sitting in second place. UNC Asheville and CSU round out the top four, and conclude those who would host first round games in the Big South Championship. If the season ended today, the Keydets would travel to Asheville, N.C. and face the Bulldogs in the Justice Center in the first round of the conference tournament. The Keydets last unknown regular season opponent was announced Monday, as VMI will take on the Morgan State Bears in Feb. 19 s ESPN s BracketBusters. Morgan State made the NCAA Tournament last season, on the strength of a MEAC Championship. The two schools have never faced each other, but will do battle in Baltimore, Md. at 4 p.m. Last Meeting with Charleston Southern (1/8/11): CSU used a rebound advantage, including 17 boards from Kenny Mitchell and 10 from Kelvin Martin, and had a 23-3 second-half run to seize control and grab an win over VMI on Jan. 8 at Cameron Hall. It was Charleston Southern s first win at Cameron Hall since Jan. 5, Last Meeting with Coastal Carolina (1/6/11): Coastal Carolina started the second half with a 14-1 run, breaking open a close game and earning a win over VMI Jan. 6 at Cameron Hall. Keith Gabriel had 23 points for the Keydets, while Desmond Holloway led six Coastal players in double figures, with 25 points. A VMI win against Charleston Southern would: Move the Keydets back to.500 in League play for the fourth time this season. The Keydets have not been over the.500 plateau in Big South play since the end of the season. Be VMI s fourth win in the team s last five games at CSU Field House. A VMI win against Coastal Carolina would: Mark just VMI s second win in Conway since joining the Big South, joining a victory in KEYDETS AT A GLANCE Probable Starters VMI (12-9, 5-6 BSC) vs. Charleston Southern (12-11, 6-5 BSC) Thursday, Feb. 3, 7:30 p.m. CSU Field House N. CCU has not lost a Big South game in Conway since last January. In addition, the much-improved Charleston Southern Bucs are not only above.500 overall, but they are strong at home as well. So far this season, CSU is 9-1 inside its field house, which is the smallest home arena in Division I. On the Road Again: After a 4-0 start in conference action away from Cameron Hall, several VMI statistical differences between home and away action bear watching. In Big South play, the Keydets are shooting 42.8% inside Cameron Hall, while hitting 49.8% away from Lexington. VMI is also hitting 43.2% from three-point range on the road, while managing just a 32.3% clip at home. Finally, the Keydets have managed to stay close in rebounding on the road, posting a -2.4 rebound margin, but have not been as successful at home, getting outrebounded by 10.5 per contest. Game Over Early?: So far this season, those attending VMI basketball games have seen the contests decided early, one way or another. The Keydets are 11-1 when leading at the half, with their only loss coming to Winthrop in the Big South opener Dec. 2. VMI, however, is just 1-8 when trailing at the intermission, having only rallied against Jacksonville State on Nov. 18. If you prefer to look later on in the game for a key moment, the Keydets are 12-1 when leading with five minutes left, but have yet to rally when trailing at that point (0-8). Again, the culprit here was Winthrop, as VMI led with five minutes to go on Dec. 2. Other Statistical Notes: This year s VMI team has several clear-cut statistical differences. As noted on page 4, the Keydets are 10-0 when outshooting their opponent this season, but have just one win when they do not hold an edge from the floor (in an odd event, both High Point and VMI shot 44.4% from the floor in the Jan. 15 meeting between the teams, a game won by VMI). Also, the team is undefeated (9-0) when scoring at least 90 points and is 8-0 when holding the opposition to 80 points or less.

After suffering through one of the worst games of his career, a 1 for 11 game against Charleston Southern on Jan. 8, Kenon averaged 25.8 points per game and shot 62.5% from the floor over the next four games. That included 19 of 32 from three-point range, which during Jan. 27 s Gardner-Webb game, helped propel him past Chavis Holmes 09 for the all-time lead in three-pointers at the Institute (see chart at right). In addition, on Jan. 15, Kenon became just the sixth player in Big South history to surpass the 300 three-pointers made plateau. He is one of only two active players to hit that mark, joining Jamarco Warren of Charleston Southern, who also hit his 300th on Jan. 15 (Warren surpassed the mark first due to CSU s earlier tip time). Thanks to his torrid hot streak, Kenon has closed to within two of Warren for third place on the Big South s all-time list. Finally, Kenon surpassed John Krovic for 10th on the VMI all-time scoring list. Already this season, the senior has gone from 18th to 10th on that chart, and has a strong chance to climb to ninth on this road trip. Kenon needs 28 points to surpass Radee Skipworth, who played at the Institute from Drive For Five: VMI is bidding to lead the nation in scoring for the fifth straight year, and currently paces Division I at 91.6 points per game, nearly four PPG more than the second place Washington Huskies. VMI is the only team to accomplish the feat over four consecutive seasons, and this year, the Keydets also lead the country in three-point field goals per game, averaging over eleven made per contest. Other National Notes: In addition to three-pointers and overall scoring, stats the Keydets have dominated nationally over the past several seasons, VMI is also near the top in other categories as well. The team ranks fourth in steals (9.9 per game) and is a surprising 35th in blocked shots (5.1 per contest. Block Party: VMI has already posted the fifth-most blocks in school history, as the Keydets reached 107 rejections during this past homestand. That stands as the fifth-most blocks all-time, and gives VMI a chance to better their program record 144 swats from last season. The Keydets currently lead the Big South in blocks per game (5.1), and rank 35th nationally in that statistic. Movin Up The Charts VMI 1,000-Point Club 1. The Keydets have, however, gained continuity in their opening lineup once again, as the same quintet has opened each of the last three contests. Rebounding = Winning?: Although VMI has a negative rebounding margin on the season (-3.2 per game), the Keydet efforts on the glass have been crucial thus far in VMI is currently a startling 7-0 when outrebounding its opposition. The Keydet rebounding efforts have been led by Stan Okoye, who has averaged 8.9 rebounds per contest, the third-highest mark in the Big South. Baucom Moves Up: Despite only being at the Institute for five seasons, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom now sits second on the school s all-time wins list. The Jan. 15 win over High Point was Baucom s 80th at VMI, moving him past Joe Cantafio s 79 wins at the Institute. The current VMI head man now trails only Bart Bellairs, who had 116 wins as the Keydet skipper. Back to Lexington: The season has been a season of groupings for VMI, in terms of home versus road. After having eight home games in the first month of the campaign, the Keydets had just four over the next two months. Beginning Feb. 10 at High Point, VMI will play its final three home games of the season. Quartet of TV Games Announced: VMI will have a quartet of TV games this season, including Feb. 15 s game with Liberty. Not only will that contest be picked up by the Flames Television Network, but MASN is scheduled to broadcast the Keydets regular season finale, a Feb. 26 date with Winthrop. Earlier in the year, the VMI/West Virginia game (11/27) was shown on MASN, while the Liberty/VMI game on Jan. 20 was broadcast on several different outlets. Odd is Even Better: VMI will be looking to continue an odd trend, quite literally, in Each of the last two seasons ending in odd years, and , have seen VMI advance to the title game of the Big South Championship. Meanwhile, the even numbered years have concluded with first round losses. The Keydets misfired on a shot, and GWU had a chance to chip away even further, but was whistled for a charging foul on the offensive end. Kenon came into the contest with 306 career three-pointers, tied with Chavis Holmes '09 for the most in school history. He also recorded a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio in the three-game span. VCU Survives Late VMI Push, 86-80: VMI chopped a 13-point VCU lead to one, 76-75, with 4:26 left, but the Rams went on to score the next six points and hold on for the win, 86-80, in non-conference basketball action Wednesday night, Dec. 8 in Richmond, Va. In only the second meeting between the in-state rivals, VCU improved its overall record to 6-2 while the Keydets fell to 6-4. VMI Drops Conference Opener: After VMI's Keith Gabriel sent the game to overtime with two late free throws, the Winthrop Eagles scored the first six points of the extra frame and went on to defeat the VMI Keydets in the Big South opener for both teams Thursday night, Dec. 2 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. With Winthrop up by one with 33 seconds to go, WU's Reggie Middleton hit a pair of free throws to put the visitors up three, Austin Kenon converted a lay-up at the other end, and after Middleton split a pair of tries for the Eagles, Gabriel was fouled going to the basket. With 4.8 seconds showing on the clock, Gabriel drilled the two foul shots to tie the contest. Middleton had a desperation try for the Eagles at the buzzer, but it hit the backboard, the left inside portion of the rim and then bounced out to send the contest to extra time. It was the first overtime game at Cameron Hall since Feb. 2, In the five minute overtime frame, Winthrop (4-3, 1-0) scored the first six points to take an advantage. Rodney Glasgow hit a three-pointer for VMI to cut it to three, and VMI got back within two when Michael Sparks split a pair from the charity stripe with 1:52 left. The Keydets got a steal on the following possession, but turned the ball over and would not be able to cut it to a one possession game again. Scoring Barrage Leads Keydets to Win, : Seven different Keydet players had at least 16 points, VMI notched the second-most points in school history and the Keydets routed the Central Penn College Knights Monday night, Nov. 27 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. It was the team's largest margin of victory and most points scored overall since Nov. 20, 2008, when the Keydets bested Stevenson by 61 markers. It was also the first time VMI had seven players in double figure scoring since that contest with Stevenson. The home team was helped by 21 threepointers, the first game VMI had with 20-plus treys since January of 2009, and an effort that tied the 14th-most three-pointers made in NCAA Division I history. Finally, a school-record 85-point second half put the game away, although Central Penn held just two leads all night, 2-0 and 2-1. Meeting Final Four School: Nov. 27 s game with the West Virginia Mountaineers marked VMI s first opponent who advanced to the Final Four the previous year since , when the Keydets faced the Ohio State Buckeyes. Covington, Gabriel Lead Keydets to First 5-0 Start Since 1920 s: Freshman D.J. Covington had 13 points and tied a school record with nine blocks, while Keith Gabriel went over the 1,000 career point plateau and the VMI Keydets went to 5-0 for the first time in the modern era by defeating the Southern Virginia Knights Tuesday night at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. VMI's 5-0 start is the program's best in the modern era, as the Keydets had not accomplished that feat since the season. Covington's nine blocks tied Eric Mann's nine rejections against The Citadel on Jan. 15, Covington also had nine points and nine rebounds, missing a triple-double by just one of each statistic. Gabriel started the contest 0 for 5, but finally hit the needed three-pointer at the 8:47 mark, becoming the 34th player in Keydet history, and second active VMI player, to surpass the 1,000-point plateau. Keydets Knock off Jacksonville St., 65-55: Keith Gabriel's step-back three-pointer with 4:51 left keyed a 9-1 run and sent the VMI Keydets to a win over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in non-conference basketball action Thursday night, Nov. 18, at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. Stan Okoye had his third consecutive double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to pace VMI. Gabriel had 15 points for VMI, including eight over the final 5:26, and now sits just three points shy of 1,000 for his career. Gabriel Leads VMI Over UMBC: Keith Gabriel had 30 points, Stan Okoye had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds and the VMI Keydets moved to 2-0 for the first time since the season, as they defeated the UMBC Retrievers in non-conference basketball action Sunday afternoon, Nov. 14 in Baltimore, Md. After a nip-and-tuck first half that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, UMBC took a two-point lead four minutes into the second half, thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play by Justin Fry, giving the home team a edge. Just 12 seconds later, Okoye answered with a three-point play of his own, sparking a 17-6 run and giving the Keydets the lead for good. Keydets Rout Randolph Behind Okoye and Glasgow: Rodney Glasgow had 17 points and eight assists in his collegiate debut, Stan Okoye had 26 points and behind a 67-point second half, the VMI Keydets defeated the Randolph College WildCats in VMI's basketball season opener, played Friday, Nov. 12 at Cameron Hall. Brian's versatility allows him to play both the point and off the ball as a shooting guard." Upshur is a 6-5, 190 forward who plays the wing position and averaged 14.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists as a junior. He is also a standout on the Booker T. Washington volleyball team.
