1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets Face Second Ranked Team of , Take on No. 17 Pitt First Meeting Between the Programs VMI basketball continues its four-game road swing Tuesday, traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on the No. 17 Pitt Panthers. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. start, and will be broadcast on Pitt Panther TV, available via the Comcast Network in various areas of the Northeast. An audio broadcast can also be heard on wrel.com or via WZ. The Keydets enter after suffering a loss to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Saturday evening in North Charleston, S.C. CSU broke open a six-point game with a 19-6 run early in the second half and went on to victory. Stan Okoye led VMI with 18 points, while Ron Burks added 13 and Nick Gore had 11. The meeting with Pitt is the first meeting between the two programs, but it will be VMI s second against a ranked opponent this season. The Keydets also faced then-#3 Ohio State on Nov. 23, falling This game wraps up VMI s current road trip, as after this contest, the Keydets return home for a pair of home games on Thursday and Saturday. The Pitt game will be VMI's first against a Big East foe since facing West Virginia last year. The current four-game road trip is VMI s longest of the season, as the Keydets play three straight away from Cameron Hall on just one other occasion this year. Last Meeting with Pittsburgh VMI and Pittsburgh have never faced one another. A VMI win against Pittsburgh would: Be VMI s first win over a team currently in the Big East in school history. After CSU (5-2, 2-0 Big South) controlled much of the first half, leading by as many as 19, VMI (3-4, 0-2 BSC) closed the half strong and cut the margin to eight, 58-50, at halftime. Keith Gabriel scored to open the second period, cutting the lead to six, but Buc guard Saah Nimley answered with the first of his five second-half three-pointers, launching the game-breaking run that would eventually send CSU to the victory. With the win, the Bucs move to 2-0 in the Big South, and have now won five straight games for the first time since the season. VMI falls to 0-2 in the conference, having lost its first two Big South contests for the second straight year. Nimley led all scorers with 24 points, including 22 on 7 of 9 shooting in the second half. Five other Buc players scored in double figures, including Arlon Harper, who had 20. Stan Okoye led VMI with 18 points, while Ron Burks added 13 and Nick Gore had 11. VMI Drops Contest to Coastal Carolina: The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers had a rebounding advantage and saw Sam McLaurin post 19 points and 15 rebounds, en route to an win over the VMI Keydets in Big South men s basketball action Thursday night in Conway, S.C. The game was the Big South opener for both schools. VMI (3-3, 0-1 Big South) junior Stan Okoye had a game-high 25 points, but Coastal (6-1, 1-0 BSC), led by McLaurin s efforts, held a 16-4 edge in second chance points and a advantage in points in the paint. Keith Gabriel and Ron Burks were also in double figures Thursday, scoring 16 and 12 points apiece. Anthony Raffa led Coastal with 23 points, while Chris Gradnigo added 22. Covington Back in the Lineup: Sophomore center D.J. Covington returned to limited action over the two-game swing through South Carolina last week. Covington had been sidelined for three straight games because of back issues. He played three minutes at Coastal Carolina on Dec. 1 and played six minutes with four points on 2-of-3 shooting at Charleston Southern December 3. Okoye Strong Against Coastal: Stan Okoye led VMI in scoring in both games on the Keydets recent swing through South Carolina, including posting 25 points Thursday at Coastal Carolina. With those 25 points, Okoye is now averaging just under 16 points per game in his career against the Chants (15.7), including 23.5 PPG over the last two contests between

3 the schools. Burks on Strong Run: Senior guard Ron Burks has scored in double figures for three consecutive games and has averaged 14.7 points over that span, including a season-high 19 points at Ohio State November 23. Six in a Row?: After winning its fifth consecutive NCAA scoring title last season, the Keydets will seek #6 this year. No other school has ever led Division I in scoring more than three consecutive years. So far this season, VMI is averaging 83.7 points per contest, ranking 12th in Division I. Bombs Away: The Keydets also paced Division I in threepointers last season, making 11.3 per contest. They return three players who averaged at least 1.6 treys per game, in Keith Gabriel, Michael Sparks and Rodney Glasgow, and are currently 19th nationally in the category, averaging 8.9 makes per game. VMI on Television: VMI Basketball will appear six times on television/national broadband during the campaign. Following Tuesday s game with Pitt (Pitt Panther TV), the Keydets return to the airwaves Jan. 14, facing Radford on MASN. The two games with Liberty, both Jan. 10 s matchup in Lexington and Feb. 14 s game at Liberty (Flames Sports) round out the scheduled regular season TV appearances, following early-season games with Ohio State and The Citadel. In addition to the televised contests, all VMI home basketball games and road Big South Conference contests may be viewed on video-ondemand on the internet on the Big South Network. Cost per game is $4.95 and season packages are available by signing up at Okoye Goes Over 1,000: With 12 points against #3 Ohio State Nov. 23, Stan Okoye went over the 1,000 career point mark. Okoye is the 36th Keydet to surpass that plateau, and second in two seasons, after Keith Gabriel did it last year. In a coincidental item, Gabriel also accomplished the feat in the fifth game of the year, surpassing the mark against Southern Virginia. Keydets Fall to #3 Ohio State: Playing in their first game with a ranked opponent since 2006, the VMI Keydets found the going tough after intermission and fell to the thirdranked Ohio State Buckeyes, at Value City Arena Wednesday night, Nov. 23. The homestanding Buckeyes (5-0), who have won 27 straight on their home floor, placed five in double figures scoring and were led by guard William Buford with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor. Also hitting double figures for OSU was sophomore Jared Sullinger who collected his 20th career double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Aaron Craft tallied 13 points and dished out eight assists while forward Deshaun Thomas and J.D. Weatherspoon added 11 points and 10 points, respectively. The Keydets (3-2) were paced by senior guard Keith Gabriel who posted his third 20-point game of the year with 21 points. Senior guard/forward Ron Burks added a season-high 19 points and six rebounds and junior forward Stan Okoye scored 12 points on his way to becoming the 36th player in VMI history to reach the 1,000 point career plateau. Okoye s Second Half Dominance Leads Keydets to Win: Stan Okoye scored 14 points during a gamebreaking, 23-6 second half run, and Michael Sparks drilled a crucial three-pointer with 14 seconds to go, helping the VMI Keydets over the UMBC Retrievers, 84-79, in men's basketball action Nov. 19 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. Okoye finished with 24 points, but scored 14 of those in the deciding spurt. With VMI down 11, Sparks scored five straight to start the tide's turning, and Okoye went on to score 14 of the Keydets' next 18 points over a stretch of 6:36 on the game clock. He added a block, two steals and two rebounds, as VMI (3-1) went on to take a lead after a pair of Okoye free throws with 8:13 left. UMBC (0-4) pulled even on two occasions late, and 73-73, but after a three-point play by Chris De La Rosa cut the Keydet lead to two, Keith Gabriel found an open Sparks in the left corner for the deciding three-pointer, which would seal the home team's victory. In addition to Okoye, Gabriel added 24 of his own, 16 of which came in the first half. Sparks added 11 and Nick Gore had 10, while De La Rosa led UMBC with his double-double, 17 points and 10 assists. Big Second Half Sends VMI Over Alice Lloyd: The VMI Keydets used a 10-0 run early in the second half to break open a close game and go on to knock off a spirited Alice Lloyd Eagle squad, , in basketball action Nov. 15 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. In a game that was tied at halftime, 39-39, the Keydets used defensive pressure to force eight turnovers in the first 4:17 of the second half. All of VMI's points in the deciding run came off turnovers, as the Keydets forced 27 ALC miscues and held a 43-8 edge in points off turnovers for the game. Quinton Upshur had five steals in just 19 minutes, pacing the Keydet efforts, while Keith Gabriel had four and Nick Gore grabbed three steals. Offensively, the Keydets were led by Gabriel, who had 22 points, as the team exploded for 62 second half markers. Freshman Jordan Weethee rebounded from a scoreless first half to score 17 second half points. Gore had 17 markers, Stan Okoye had 19 and Ron Burks filled up the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds and seven assists. Keydets Drop All-Military Classic Championship to Air Force: Michael Lyons scored 20 points, Taylor Broekhuis had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds and the Air Force Falcons defeated the VMI Keydets, 75-65, to win the first annual All- Military Classic Saturday night, Nov. 12, in Colorado Springs, Colo. VMI (1-1) was led by Ron Burks, who had 15 points, while Keith Gabriel chipped in 14 and Michael Sparks went 5 for 5 from the floor, adding 13 points. Air Force's (2-0) Lyons was named the Tournament MVP, while Gabriel and Rodney Glasgow were also named to the All-Tournament Team. Keydets Down The Citadel For Fourth Straight Season-Opening Win: VMI posted six players in double figures, led wire to wire and survived a furious rally by The Citadel Bulldogs to take a win in game two of the All-Military Classic, contested late Friday, Nov. 11 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The contest was the season opener for both clubs. After pulling away midway through the second half, the Keydets took a lead with 3:58 remaining, thanks to a jumper by Nick Gore. The Bulldogs responded with a 17-4 run, a spurt that brought them back within two with just 14 seconds remaining. After Marshall Harris III drilled a trey to cap that push, he fouled Keith Gabriel on the ensuing inbounds play. Gabriel hit 1 of 2 at the charity stripe, giving Citadel a chance to tie, but the Bulldogs could not get off a three-point try before time expired, giving the Keydets a win. Stan Okoye led VMI with 19 points, while Rodney Glasgow and Gabriel had 17 markers apiece. Ron Burks added 11, all in the second half, while Gore finished just one rebound shy of a double-double, notching 14 points and nine boards despite going against 6-9 Citadel center Mike Groselle for the majority of the game. Groselle led the Bulldogs with 25 points and 11 rebounds, playing 37 minutes in the thin Colorado Springs air, a full five minutes more than any other player. Challenging Schedule: The schedule will challenge the Runnin Roos, perhaps as they have not ever been challenged. The Keydets have two notable games on the non-conference docket, as on Nov. 23, they will travel to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes. OSU advanced to last year s regional semifinals,

The Buckeyes return Jared Sullinger, last year s Big 10 Tournament MVP and one of the top interior players in the country. Less than two weeks after that game, VMI will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pitt Panthers on Dec. 6. Pitt was a #1 seed in last year s NCAA tournament, but lost to eventual NCAA runner-up Butler in one of the stranger games in recent memory, a Butler win in the tournament s third round. Youth and Experience: VMI has a unique blend of youth and experience on its roster this season, as the Keydets will not only return four seniors, but also have five freshmen on the roster. That freshman class is VMI s largest since , the year it last played at Air Force, while the four seniors were all freshmen when the Keydets beat Kentucky to open the season at Rupp Arena. VMI advanced to the Big South Championship game that year, before losing to Radford. Sophomores Seek Encore Performance: Sophomores D.J. Covington and Rodney Glasgow return, looking to repeat their outstanding freshman seasons and complement the strong senior class the Keydets feature this season. Covington was last year s Big South Freshman of the Year, coming on very strong late in the season and winning the final three conference Freshman of the Week awards. He transformed into a fearsome presence in the lane, where he averaged 2.3 blocks per game, and his 57 total blocks were the fifth-most in Keydet history. Covington also earned the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Rookie of the Year honor, awarded to the top first-year player in the state. Glasgow ran the point from the get-go in VMI s high-octane offense, and had good results. He led the Big South in assist/turnover ratio, and ranked 17th nationally with his 2.64 effort. He also was 15th in the conference in three-pointers per game (1.6) and averaged 9.5 points and 3.9 assists per game in his 30 contests. Block Party: While the Keydets are known for their offensive prowess, one aspect of their defense saw a dramatic increase last season, that of blocked shots. Not only did VMI tie for the conference lead in blocks per game (4.5), but the Keydets ranked 46th nationally in the statistic. D.J.
