1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets Go Searching For First Road Win In Williamsburg VMI Looks to Improve to Over.500 With Win Against William & Mary VMI evened its record at 5-5 with a victory against Newport News Apprentice on Monday, Dec. 10 at Cameron Hall. Senior forward Reggie Williams scored 43 points and added 10 rebounds while junior guard Chavis Holmes scored 30 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win. The Keydets ended the two-game homestand with a two-game winning streak and evened its record to 5-5 overall and 5-1 at home. Junior guard Travis Holmes rang up his second straight double-double game and fifth of his career with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Willie Bell and freshman guard Austin Kenon each added nine points. Thanks to his 43-point, 10-rebound performance, Reggie Williams was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Williams, who has been selected as one of 50 preseason nominees for the John Wooden Award, is fourth in the nation in scoring with 26.4 points per contest entering Tuesday s play. Williams, who was also voted to the Big South Conference s Preseason All-Conference team, is now the third-leading scorer in both VMI and Big South history. A year ago, he established new Big South and VMI records for points in a season and he is on track to become the all-time leading scorer in both VMI and Big South history. Williams has also scored in double-figures in 35 straight games, the fourth-longest streak in school history. With a free throw at the 13:04 mark of the first half against Apprentice, junior guard Chavis Holmes became the 32nd member of VMI s 1000-point club. Holmes, who has moved up to 30th on the career scoring list with 1,026 points, joins senior forward Reggie Williams as the only active members of the club, though Travis Holmes is not far behind, currently with 917 points. A season after leading the nation in points (100.9), assists (20.6), steals (14.8) and three-pointers (13.4) per game, the Keydets once again lead the nation with 98.6 points scored, 15.5 steals and 12.0 three-pointers made per contest, while ranking third nationally with 20.1 assists per outing. (All stats rankings entering Tuesday s play). The Keydets made a stunning run to the Big South Championship Finals last season with upset wins over third-seeded Liberty and second-seeded High Point. The sixth-seeded Keydets then came up three points short of top-seeded Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. in the Final, televised on ESPN. This season, the Keydets entered the year with their highest preseason ranking in over 30 years, coming in third in the Big South s Preseason Poll. High Point (216 pts.) edged out Winthrop (214) by two points in the voting, while the Keydets (147) were voted ahead of Coastal Carolina (134), UNC Asheville, Liberty, Charleston Southern and Radford. A VMI win against William & Mary would: Give VMI their first win away from Cameron Hall this season, as the Keydets are 0-2 at neutral sites and 0-2 in opposing gyms. Move the Keydets to 6-5, marking the latest that VMI has been above.500 since finishing the season with a record. Williams joins Gay Elmore 87 and Ron Carter 78 on the list of VMI s elite scorers. He is also the 436th player in NCAA Division I history with at least 2,000 points The Prince George Assassin is also the fourth Big South player to break the barrier, and only the second with 2,000 points and 500 rebounds, joining Coastal Carolina s Tony Dunkin, who totalled 2,151 points and 725 rebounds. Williams is the nation s leading active scorer with his 2,125 points, just ahead of New Orleans senior guard Bo McCalebb with 2,082 points. Interestingly, McCalebb also broke the 2,000-point barrier on Nov. 28, by scoring 22 points against Lamar. The McCalebb-Williams connection goes back farther, as the two met on the hardwood in their freshman year, with McCalebb gaining the upper hand in a victory in The Big Easy. Holmes Twins On Pace to Become Second Set of Twins in VMI 1,000-Point Club: Junior Chavis Holmes became the 32nd member of the VMI 1,000-point club with his 30-point outing against Newport News Apprentice on Dec. 10. As his twin brother, Travis Holmes, nears the 1,000-point mark as well, the Holmes are on pace to become the second set of twins to play at VMI to each score 1,000 points. Chavis currently has 1,026 points, while Travis currently has 917. They would join the Williams twins, as Ramon scored 1,630 points in his career, while Damon is just behind with 1,622. Chavis On The Mark: Junior guard Chavis Holmes has averaged 22.8 points and 4.4 rebounds over the past five games, making his mark in 3-point shooting by going 22-for-40 from beyond the arc (.550). Holmes was a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point land against Columbia Union and hit his first two tries against Army on Saturday to extend his string to eight straight bombs before missing later in the first half. Holmes six triples against Columbia Union tied a career-high and was the fourth time he had accomplished the feat. He once again matched his career-high against Howard, hitting six more treys on his way to a 24-point performance. Holmes now sits third in career three-pointers made with 170, needing 37 to surpass Ramon Williams for the school s career lead. Travis Raises His Game: Junior guard Travis Holmes has averaged 16.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.6 steals over the past five games, including his fourth and fifth career double-doubles in back-to-back games against Howard and Apprentice. His 13 rebounds against Howard represented a career-high for Holmes, who has raised his scoring average (15.0 to 15.4), rebounding average (4.9 to 6.2) and free throw percentage (.684 to.784) from last season. Holmes has now scored in double figures in all but one game this season. He now boasts the third-most steals

3 in school history with 181, needing 60 to pass Jason Bell s school-record total of 240. Kenon Does Damage Beyond the Arc: Freshman guard Austin Kenon has given VMI some needed scoring punch from the outside and has turned in double-figure scoring games in five of the team s last six outings. Kenon has averaged 12.0 points and 3.3 three-pointers per game over the last six outings. He scored a career-high 15 points with three 3- point goals against Columbia Union on Nov. 28 and gave VMI a lift last Saturday with four threepointers for 12 points against Army. Kenon hit three of his triples to help VMI rally from a 16-point second half deficit and take a brief lead late in the game before falling to the Black Knights. He also later hit a three-pointer against Army that would have been a game-winner at the buzzer, but the shot was waived off because of insufficient time on the clock (0.3) for a catch and shoot. Kenon also had four steals against Columbia Union. Double Trouble: In a victory against Newport News Apprentice, the Keydets had a pair of players sport double-doubles, the first time this season the Keydets have done so. With Reggie Williams 43 points and 10 rebounds and Travis Holmes 14 points and 10 rebounds, the Keydets had a pair of players with double-doubles for the first time since Williams and T. Holmes each turned the trick at Radford on Feb. 14, The performances were the 22nd career double-double for Williams and the fifth for Holmes in his career, as it marked the second straight double-double for Holmes, after his 13- point, 13-rebound performance against Howard. Keydets Flex Defensive Muscle In Win Over Howard: VMI bounced back from disappointing setbacks to Army and South Carolina State with a dominating performance against Howard, spurred by a defensive effort that saw the Bison score only 59 points. The 59 points allowed by VMI are the fewest since Feb. 18, 2006, when the Keydets dropped a decision to Charleston Southern. Additionally, VMI s 36-point margin of victory was the largest against a Division I opponent since the Keydets defeated The Citadel on Feb. 5, Oh, So Close: Despite the amazing numbers regularly put up by the Keydets, the team is no stranger to very close games. Over the past year-and-a-half since the Runnin Roos have gone to their break-neck style of play, the team has played 13 games that have been decided by five points or less. However, VMI has come out victorious in only two of those contests, defeating UNC Asheville last Jan. 22 and knocking off Liberty last Feb. 27 in the Big South Conference Championship Quarterfinals. Additionally, in games decided by two points or less since the beginning of last season, VMI stands 1-5, including such losses in each of their last two outings. Buckeyes Put Clamps On Keydets: While suffering a loss to Ohio State, VMI was held to their lowest offensive output in a year and a half, dating back to a loss to Charleston Southern on Feb. 18, In addition, the Keydets tied a school record while making only two free throws in the contest, equalling a mark that has been achieved four other times since 1953 and last done in The Keydets 30.1% shooting from the floor also marked the lowest that the team has posted since beginning their current style of play prior to the campaign. In fact, the team s shooting was the worst by a Keydet team since shooting only 27.6% at Old Dominion in a loss on Dec. 1, There s No Place Like Home: This season, the Keydets have certainly found that to be the case in regards to shooting. In six home dates this season, the Keydets are shooting 47.4% from the floor and 32.2% from beyond the arc. However, in four dates away from Cameron Hall, VMI is shooting only 39.2% from the floor and 27.9% on three-point attempts. As a result, VMI has averaged points at home this season, compared to just 82.2 points when away from home. A season ago, the Keydets averaged points per game in 13 home dates. Keydets Break The Streak Against JMU: With a win against JMU on Nov. 21, the Keydets claimed their first win in over 19 seasons against the Dukes, snapping an eight-game skid in the series. Senior Reggie Williams collected VMI s first double-double of the season, scoring 30 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, as he also had a season-high seven assists in his 17th career double-double outing. Other double-digit outings for the Keydets included 18 points from junior Travis Holmes and 11 from freshman Christian Hunter. VMI led, 77-67, following a Travis Holmes layup with 5:26 remaining, but the Dukes answered with a 14-4 run over the next three minutes to pull even on a pair of free throws by Abdulai Jalloh to even the score at at the 2:27 mark. The Keydets outscored JMU, 9-2, the rest of the way and took the lead for good on seven consecutive points including six straight by Williams to start the run. A Williams layup with 1:57 left followed by two free throws and a dunk from the senior pushed the Keydets lead to and Travis Holmes converted one of two free throws seconds later to cap the run. Record-Setting Romps Top National Charts: Thanks to blowout wins of West Virginia Wesleyan and Columbia Union, the Keydets top the national charts in several categories in regards to single-game performances. VMI boasts the top two totals in the nation in single-game scoring (156 vs. CUC, 135 vs. WVWC), offensive rebounding (30 vs. both CUC and WVWC) and steals (28 vs. CUC, 26 vs. WVWC). Additionally, VMI s 38 assists against West Virginia Wesleyan are also the tops in the nation this season. 100% Chance of Reggie Rain: Senior forward Reggie Williams equalled his own school mark for field goals made in a game against West Virginia Wesleyan, converting on 18 of his 27 attempts on his way to a 38-point performance. Williams tied the mark that he established nearly a year to the day previous, when he scored a school-record 45 points thanks to his 18 field goals against Virginia Intermont on Nov. 15, Let s Get It Started: When the Keydets took on Northern Colorado to start the season at the Air Force Classic, it marked the earliest start in the VMI s 99-year history. VMI opened up play on Nov. 9 this season, a day ahead of when they started last season, on Nov. 10 against Ohio State. Rocky Mountain Lows: Playing for the first time ever in Colorado, the Keydets lost both contests that they played at the Air Force Classic. Against Northern Colorado in the opener, VMI allowed the Bears to shoot 68.0% from the field, the third-highest total since Coach Duggar Baucom began running his up-tempo style of play in the beginning of last season. Against Dartmouth the next night, VMI shot only 19.2% (5-for-26) from beyond the arc. That was the fewest three-pointers and the worst threepoint percentage by the Keydets since the beginning of last season also. Reggie Williams Redux: Last season, Reggie Williams took the world of College Basketball by storm, topping the national scoring charts on his way to several recognitions. This season, he was honored with numerous preseason honors, including VMI s first-ever nomination for the John R. Wooden Award, college basketball s most prestigious honor. 5 A season ago, Williams became the first VMI player to lead the nation in scoring since Jason Conley became the first freshman in NCAA history to lead Division I in scoring with a 29.3 average during the season. Williams now sits 3rd on the school's scoring list with 2,125 points. In the Big South recordbook, Williams also sits 3rd in career points, needing 87 points to surpass Larry Blair s Big South-record total of 2,211 career points. In 97 career contests, Williams has averaged 21.9 points per outing, eclipsing the 20-point mark 51 times while topping 30 points 20 times. He is the only Keydet to post multiple 40-point games, as he has now done so five times. He is also the only player in Big South history to have as many as three 40-plus point games in his career. Fresh Faces Everywhere: This season, the Keydets boast six freshmen on their roster, joining with seven returning players. The total marks the most freshmen on a VMI Basketball team since the campaign, when seven freshmen suited up for the Keydets. Keydets Picked Third In Big South Poll: VMI s strong finish in the Big South Tournament last year remained a vivid memory for many of the conference basketball community, as the Keydets were picked third in the Conference s men s basketball preseason poll. It s the highest a VMI basketball team has been picked in a conference preseason poll in over 30 years. The Keydets received 147 points in the preseason poll for third place behind High Point which was edged Winthrop for the top spot with 216 points and 15 first place votes and Winthrop's 214 points and 14 first place votes. It is a reversal from a season ago, when the Keydets were picked last in the Conference s Preseason Poll. Baucom Rewarded With Contract Extension: Late in the offseason, VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom agreed to a contract extension to coach Keydet Basketball through the 2011 season. Baucom is in his third season as VMI head basketball coach this season after having been named to the post on April 14, His original four-year contract ran through the 2009 season. The new deal includes a salary raise and other benefits. I am extremely happy that Duggar Baucom has accepted our offer for a contact extension, said VMI Athletic Director Donny White. Under his leadership, our team has made great strides and I feel that he can make us a consistent winner. In , Baucom led his second-year team to a banner season and national acclaim. Using an up-tempo system for the season, the Keydets, picked to finish last in the preseason poll, won their most games (14) in nine years and advanced to the championship game of the Big South Tournament. The Keydets also set new NCAA season marks in three-pointers, both made and attempted (442 of 1383), 3-pointers made per game (13.4), 3-pointers attempted per game (41.9) and total steals (490). Single-Season Turnaround: After winning only seven games in , the Keydets doubled that total by winning 14 a year ago. The seven-win swing is the largest single-season turnaround since the Keydets won 18 games in after winning only ten the year before. In the 99-year history of VMI basketball, the team has generated a larger turnaround only three times. The team won 22 games after winning 13 the year previous, while the team also saw an eight-game turnaround, joining the team. Numbers Jump: The edition of the VMI basketball team turned more than a few heads, as the program garnered national recognition after producing some eye-popping numbers.
