1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES VMI Opens Big South Schedule Against Defending Champs Winthrop Keydets Look For First Win Over Eagles Since The Keydets begin their Big South campaign on Wednesday night, taking on the defending league champs in Winthrop on RED OUT Night at Cameron Hall. The game marks the earliest start to a conference season for VMI since , when the Keydets lost in overtime to Furman, 87-82, on Dec. 3, 1980 at The Pit, a season before Cameron Hall first opened its doors. At 4-2, the Keydets are off to their best start since the season. That team went to 5-2 with a win over Bluefield on Dec. 13, 2004 at Cameron Hall. This season marks the first time in school history that VMI has appeared on the CollegeInsider.com s Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. After peaking at 22nd last week, the Keydets fell three spots back to 25th in this week s poll. The poll, now in its tenth year of existence, is comprised of coaches from each of the 22 conferences and independents that are eligible for inclusion on the rating. In other rankings news, the Keydets also received a vote in two consecutive Associated Press Top 25 polls. Additionally, the Washington Post has ranked VMI tenth on their Atlantic 11 poll, comprised of Division I schools located in the Mid-Atlantic. This year also marks the first time that VMI had appeared on the list. VMI s season-opening, win at Kentucky not only marked the Keydets first win against an SEC team in 32 seasons, but was also the first time that VMI had defeated Kentucky since Seniors Chavis and Travis Holmes pace Duggar Baucom s potent offensive attack this season, as the Keydets look to lead the nation in scoring for the third-straight season. Chavis and Travis Holmes currently rank as the ninth and 14th scorers in VMI history, respectively, and together are the fourth-highest scoring set of twins in NCAA Division I history with 2,839 combined points. (Page 5 for more info) Senior guard Chavis Holmes is the Big South s only returning All-Conference player this season. Of the ten players selected to either the First or Second Teams at the end of last season, eight of them graduated, while UNC Asheville s Kenny George will not play this season due to various medical ailments. Chavis Holmes was also voted to the Big South Preseason All-Conference team prior to the season, when VMI was voted seventh of ten teams in the Preseason Poll. (Page 5 for preseason predictions) In , the Keydets are looking to become only the third school in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in scoring for three straight seasons. Furman pulled the trick from , while Loyola Marymount followed suit from (Page 3 for more info) A VMI win against Winthrop would: Signify the Keydets first win over the Eagles since Jan. 31, 2004, breaking a stretch of nine consecutive losses in the series. Give the Keydets their first 5-2 start since the season. Improve the Keydets to 2-1 on the season in televised games. VMI knocked off Kentucky on Nov. 14 in a game televised by the Big Blue Sports Network and picked up regionally by Fox Sports South, and fell to Virginia on Comcast SportsNet. Mark the Keydets second-straight win in a conference opener. Last season, the Keydets knocked off Charleston Southern on the road in overtime to begin their Big South slate. It was the first time since joining the Big South that VMI had opened their conference season with a win. The Keydets boasted identical shooting nights from distance in wins against Stevenson (133-72) and Campbell (97-92). The 19 three-pointers in back-to-back games were the most by VMI since hitting 21 and 20, respectively, against Virginia Intermont and Southern Virginia on Nov. 15 & 20, In the follow-up to those games, VMI struggled from distance, hitting on only 7-of-34 attempts in a loss at Jacksonville State. Keydets In The National Rankings: The Keydets are currently leading the nation in scoring (103.8) and 3-pointers per game (13.3), while also ranking second nationally in turnovers forced (22.7) and sixth in assists (20.3). Individually, the Keydets also boast the nation s leader in steals in Chavis Holmes (24), while his twin brother Travis ranks seventh (tied) with 18. Sultans of Swat: Against Stevenson on Nov. 20, the Keydets set a new Cameron Hall record with 12 blocked shots. Leading the way was senior Chavis Holmes, who set a new career high with four blocks, along with a career-best nine rebounds, five steals and 21 points. The 12 rejections against Stevenson was the most in the Baucom era and fell three short of the school record 15 blocks against Appalachian State in What They re Saying About VMI s Win At Kentucky Kentucky Head Coach Billy Gillispie: "They whipped us. They were more physical than us. They got all the loose balls. They hustled harder than we did. They rebounded in a timely fashion better than we did. They executed much better than we did. They had a great deal more leadership than we did." North Carolina Head Coach Roy Williams: "It was such a weird game, VMI would have beaten us also. I know it's an easy deal for me to say that, but we wouldn't have beaten VMI if they had come in here and played us like that. They were sensational." Washington Post Contributor John Feinstein: While upsets have become more common, VMI over Kentucky ranks pretty high on the all-time stunners list. One of the smallest schools in Division 1 with about 1,(4)00 students, VMI has a litany of military requirements even though its graduates are not required to do military service. The Keydets victory in Lexington, Ky. (as opposed to Lexington, Va., where VMI is located) will be remembered for years. When Kentucky looks back at low points in the history of its program, it will surely bring up November 14, When VMI considers highlights, the date will come up instantly.
3 Converting From The Stripe: Over a two-game stretch earlier this season, the Keydets shot an outstanding 90.5% from the free throw line, including a (93.3%) outing against Virginia. That percentage against the Cavaliers ranked as VMI s best performance from the line in the Duggar Baucom era, now in his fourth season at the helm of the program. The last time VMI shot that high of a percentage in a game came when VMI hit all four of their efforts at Virginia Tech on Dec. 10, Taking Advantage of Takeaways: In VMI s win over Maryland Bible on Nov. 18, VMI caused a season-high 37 turnovers by the Eagles. That was the most turnovers forced by VMI since causing 44 against Columbia Union on Nov. 28, VMI parlayed those turnovers into 57 points against Maryland Bible, the most points off turnovers in a game by VMI since the season. Keydets Open Season With Historic Win Over Kentucky: Behind a career-best 30-point performance by senior guard Travis Holmes, VMI scored its first win over an SEC program in 32 years, stunning Kentucky, in front of 22,579 fans at Rupp Arena on Friday, Nov. 14. The Keydets matched a facility record by an opponent with 14 three-pointers, including five by sophomore gunner Austin Kenon. Kentucky got a valiant effort from junior Jodie Meeks, who poured in a career-best 39 points in leading a massive second-half comeback. After holding a advantage at halftime, VMI extended the lead to 23 points on a three-pointer by freshman Keith Gabriel with 14:10 remaining. After the teams traded buckets to make it 85-62, Meeks led a run over the next ten minutes, giving Kentucky their first lead of the game at with 4:52 remaining. It would be the Wildcats only lead of the night. Following Ramon Harris layup to give Kentucky the lead, the Keydets answered quickly with a jumper by senior Willie Bell, knotting the score at 97. Kenon then knocked in his fifth threepointer of the night, a dagger from the right corner, to give VMI the lead for good. The win was VMI s first against an SEC program since defeating Tennessee in the NCAA East Regionals on March 13, It was the Keydets first victory in the series against Kentucky since 1922, when the Keydets scored a decision. Kentucky Game Redux: * The loss for Kentucky was only their 55th all-time at Rupp Arena in the 33 seasons of play there. Following the game, UK stood at (.883) at the facility. * VMI s 111 points were the most points allowed by Kentucky at Rupp Arena since a overtime loss to Louisiana-Lafayette on Dec. 23, * It was also the most points Kentucky had given up since Dec. 27, 1989, when it lost at North Carolina. * The last time Kentucky scored 100-plus points and lost was a overtime loss to Duke on March 28, That game ended when Grant Hill passed downcourt to Christian Laettner, who hit a turn-around jumper from the free-throw line to send Duke to the 1992 Final Four. * The 14 made three-pointers by VMI were the most UK had allowed since 14 against Penn State on Nov. 25, * Kentucky's 25 turnovers were the most since committing 26 mishaps against Georgia on Feb. 15, VMI scored 38 points off UK turnovers. Out With A Bang: VMI opened its basketball campaign with a daunting schedule, playing four games in seven days. The Keydets went 3-1 during the stretch, beginning with a road split at Kentucky and Virginia. Over the few days, the Keydets will play two more games, including one on the road at UNC Asheville. In all, VMI will play five of their first eight games on the road. Homecoming For Sparks: VMI freshman forward Michael Sparks began his collegiate basketball career where he ended his high school career - in Lexington, Kentucky. Sparks had five points and three rebounds in his collegiate debut, taking place at storied Rupp Arena. The Tates Creek HS product averaged 19.1 points and 8.5 rebounds his senior year at the Lexington, Ky. school, and became the school's all-time leading scorer surpassing new South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn. Sparks was also selected to play in the prestigious Kentucky- Indiana All-Star game last spring. He shot 80% from the free throw line last year as a senior. Sparks is one of four freshman signees on the VMI squad. High-Scoring Keydets Join Elite List: VMI topped the nation in scoring for the second straight year in with a 91.3 points per game average, becoming just the 11th team on record in NCAA history to lead the country in scoring in back-to-back years. If the Keydets can lead the nation in scoring once again this year, they would be just the third program to lead in three consecutive years and first since Loyola Marymount from Below is a list of schools that have led the nation in scoring in consecutive years Rhode Island Furman Loyola (Ill.) The Keydets have two of the top four twin brother career scoring combos in NCAA history. Chavis and Travis are following in the footsteps of Ramon and Damon Williams who played for VMI between and scored 3,252 points to rank second behind Johnny and Eddie O'Brien who played for Seattle University from and scored 3,263 points. Chavis and Travis have scored 2,839 points combined over their first three-plus years of college to rank fourth on the NCAA twin brother scoring list, and trail Horace and Harvey Grant of Clemson/Oklahoma who are third with 3,231 points. Topping The Big South Charts: VMI senior Chavis Holmes entered the campaign as the Big South Conference's leading active scorer, and now has 1,503 points, ranking him 21st on the all-time BSC scoring list. Holmes is currently 208 points from entering the league's Top 10. Twin brother Travis Holmes has scored 1,336 points and is one of three active BSC players with over 1,000 career points. Chavis and Travis rank ninth and 14th, respectively, on the VMI career scoring list. Board Scores: Two VMI players enter the season with chances to top the 500-rebound mark for their careers. Senior Travis Holmes is 46 rebounds away from 500 rebounds, and would become the 35th player in Big South Conference history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Senior Willie Bell has 324 career boards and could also top the 500- mark with a big year. Remembering Reggie: VMI entered the without its scoring leader of the past four years. Replacing forward Reggie Williams will not be an easy task. Williams in became the all-time leading scorer in VMI, Big South Conference, and State Division I history with 2,556 points and received several post-season accolades including first team All-Big South, first team All-State (Richmond Times-Dispatch and VASID), and Collegehoops.net second team All-America midmajor. Williams was also named to the National Association Basketball Coach District 4 first team. Williams averaged 27.8 points in and led NCAA Division I in scoring for the second straight season. He became only the ninth player in NCAA history to lead the nation in multiple years. 5 Honors Chavis Holmes * Big South Preseason All-Conference Travis Holmes * Big South Player of the Week (Nov. 17) Keith Gabriel * Big South Freshman of the Week (Nov. 17) championship in basketball. He was named District Player of the Year in each of the past two seasons and also earned all-state honors in the same two years. "Joe Carr is a great fit for our program, we are really excited that he has chose to attend VMI," said Baucom. "Joe is a coach on the floor. He combines great size with innate leadership ability. He is the type of player that makes everyone around him better." Gore averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds last year at Waynesboro High and can play both the small and power forward positions. He was named All-District as Waynesboro advanced to the third round of the state playoffs last year. "We are very excited that Nick has decided to attend VMI," said Baucom. "He is a smart, versatile player who brings a great skill set to our program. Nick can really shoot the ball, put it on the floor and go by bigger players, and he also plays very, very hard." Sizing up the recruiting process so far, Baucom stated, "I would like to thank my hard working staff and players for bringing in two such quality cadet-athletes during the early signing period. It is truly a combined effort by all parties to attract this kind of talent to VMI." Baucom Rewarded With Contract Extension: Just before the season, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom received a contract extension through the season, Athletic Director Donny White announced. Baucom, who has injected a brand of fastpaced, high-scoring hoops that has brought the Keydets success and acclaim on and off the court, is entering his fourth season as VMI head coach since taking over the program in April, Over the past two seasons, Baucom has led VMI to the NCAA scoring title, a feat accomplished most recently by Arizona in and Under Baucom, the Keydets have also experienced their most prolific two-year winning period (28 victories) in over a decade and posted back-to-back 14 win seasons for the first time since VMI twice produced the nation s leading scoring player, Reggie Williams, while topping the country in scoring, an achievement that has only been accomplished seven times over the last 50 years in NCAA history. I am extremely pleased with Coach Duggar Baucom s work at VMI, said White. He has built a very competitive program for us and I am confident that our basketball program will continue to excel under his leadership. Since transitioning to the up-tempo, high-flying system, the VMI record books have undergone a major facelift as 43 team, individual and facility records have been rewritten in the Baucom era. I am very excited to have received a contract extension, said Baucom. I owe a lot of appreciation to my players and my staff, all who have worked extremely hard to help build this program. I am also grateful to Coach White and VMI for allowing me the opportunity to work with great young men day in and day out. In , VMI set new NCAA season marks in three-pointers, both made and attempted (442 of 1383), 3- pointers made per game (13.4) assists per game, and steals (490). VMI was also declared the NCAA stat champion in four team categories and two individual categories. The Keydets ranked first in Division I in scoring offense (100.9 PPG), three-point field goals (13.4) made per game, assists per game (14.8) and steals per game (13.4). The Keydets advanced to the 2007 Big South Championship game before falling to eventual champion Winthrop. Back-to-Back Successes: After winning only seven games in , the Keydets doubled that total by winning 14 in , and repeated that mark a season ago. The 28 wins over the past two seasons are the most by a Keydet team since the campaigns. The consecutive 14-win seasons are the first for the program since winning 26 in and 21 in Leading The Way: For the past two seasons, the Keydets have gained acclaim for leading the country in scoring (100.9 ppg in , 91.3 ppg in ). What you may not know, however, is that VMI has also led the nation in steals (14.8 spg in , 12.7 spg in ) and in three-pointers made per game (13.4 3pg in , pg in ) over the past two seasons, and also led the country in assists back in (20.6 apg).
