1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Basketball Travels to Blacksburg to Face Virginia Tech Thursday Keydets and Hokies Battle for First Time Since VMI basketball will return to action Thursday, traveling to Blacksburg to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies at Cassell Coliseum. Game time is set for 7 p.m. An audio broadcast of the game will be available locally on WZ, as well as and Video of the contest will be available on ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN application, while live stats can be accessed through hokiesports.com and VMIKeydets.com. The Keydets (1-2) come off a win over Central Penn College on Tuesday night for VMI s first win of the season, seventh straight home opener victory and 29th straight non-conference home victory. D.J. Covington and Brian Brown had 20 points apiece as Covington tied a career-high, while the junior forward also equaled a career-best with 13 rebounds. The Keydets put six players in double figures and also saw Nick Gore post a double-double (16 pts., 13 rebs.), his first since 2010, while Rodney Glasgow came up just one assist shy of doing so (17 pts., nine assists). Freshman Gavin Stephenson had seven steals, the most by a Keydet since This will be the 130th meeting between VMI and Virginia Tech on the hardwood, with the Hokies holding an edge in the all-time series. The 129 current meetings are the most VMI has ever faced an opponent, one more than Richmond s 128 and well more than VMI s 116 matchups with William & Mary. The streak dates back to last season s Jan. 10 win over Liberty at Cameron Hall, with the only loss during the run being a nine-point setback at Liberty on Feb. 14. consecutive season. That is the second-longest such streak in program history, surpassed only by a run that lasted from until , 14 consecutive seasons. Okoye Looking for Dual Top-10 s: Stan Okoye currently sits in a unique spot on the VMI record charts, ranking high on the VMI career charts in both points (13th) and rebounds (8th). Okoye is 18 points from tying John Krovic for 12th on the all-time list. Should Okoye get into the top 10 in VMI career scoring, a mark he is 66 points from, he would become one of only three players to be in the top 10 in both categories, joining Ron Carter 78 and Reggie Williams 08, the only two Keydets to ever play in the NBA. Baucom 11 Wins Away: Last season, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom became just the second coach in Keydet history to surpass the 100-win plateau, as he hit triple digits with the Feb. 18 win over William & Mary. With just 11 more victories, Baucom will tie Bart Bellairs for the most wins ever at VMI with 116. Keydets Start Well: VMI basketball has historically started seasons very well under head coach Duggar Baucom. In fact, the Keydets are looking to start the year with no worse than a.500 record through the first four games for the seventh Baucom Moving Up: VMI head coach Duggar Baucom not only won his 100th game at the Institute last season and closed on former coach Bart Bellairs for the school record (116), but he moved up the Big South charts as well. Baucom has logged 105 wins as a part of the Big South, the ninth-

3 most all-time. He is three from tying Randy Peele, former head coach at UNC Greensboro and Winthrop, for eighth on that list. VMI Downs Central Penn in Home Opener: The VMI Keydets placed six players in double figures, led by 20 points apiece from D.J. Covington and Brian Brown, enabling them to cruise past the Central Penn College Knights, , in men's basketball action Tuesday night, Nov. 14 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. The game was VMI's home opener and marked the seventh straight year the Keydets had won their first game at Cameron Hall. Covington equaled career-highs with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Nick Gore had a double-double (16 pts., 13 rebs.) and tied a career-high in rebounds. With the triumph, the Keydets (1-2) have now won 29 consecutive non-conference games at Cameron Hall, with the last setback in that streak being on Dec. 1, 2007, a loss to Army. Finally, freshman Gavin Stephenson finished with seven steals, the most by a Keydet since Ron Burks also had seven on Nov. 30, VMI Falls to Army, 80-74: The VMI Keydets had cut a double-digit deficit down to just one with under five minutes to go, thanks to five straight points by Stan Okoye, but the Army Black Knights answered with a 6-0 run and went on to defeat the Keydets, 80-74, in the third-place game of the All-Military Classic, contested Nov. 11 in Charleston, S.C. The Black Knights controlled most of the second half, stretching their lead to double figures on several occasions until a hard Army foul on Keydet (0-2) guard Joe Carr, which came with just under six minutes to go, seemed to fire up VMI. Okoye hit a three on VMI's next possession, reducing the lead to three, and then scored again on the ensuing try to make it a game. Army responded with a threepointer by Josh Herbeck, and on VMI s next trip, the Keydets misfired on multiple shot attempts despite no less than three offensive rebounds by freshman Phillip Anglade, and when Army was finally able to snare a loose ball, Mo Williams converted a three-point play off a breakaway layup, pushing the margin to and the Keydets could get no closer than five the rest of the way. Keydets Drop Season Opener to The Citadel, 84-76: Mike Groselle had 21 points and 15 rebounds and The Citadel Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the floor, helping them defeat the VMI Keydets, 84-76, in game two of the All-Military Classic tournament Saturday, Nov. 10 at McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C. Brian Brown led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, while D.J. Covington added 15 points and nine rebounds. Okoye Preseason Player of the Year: Senior Stan Okoye was voted Big South Preseason Player of the Year prior to the start of this season. He is, in fact, the first Keydet to be named the conference preseason POTY since VMI joined the conference for the season, and is the first VMI hoops standout to earn any Preseason Player of the Year honor from a conference since , when Jason Conley was tabbed with that honor by the Southern Conference. Keydets to be Broadcast Seven Times on TV: VMI basketball can be seen on various networks seven times this season, beginning with Nov. 15 s Virginia Tech game in Blacksburg which will be shown on ESPN3. West Virginia (Root Sports- Pittsburgh) on Nov. 28, Jan. 9 against Liberty at Cameron Hall (Flames Sports Network) and Jan. 19 at Coastal Carolina (ESPNU) wiil follow, with ESPNU also showing UNC Asheville at VMI on Feb. 8. The Keydets will also be facing two first-time opponents, and will do so in back to back games against the Virginia University of Lynchburg (Dec. 3) and Wright State (Dec. 8). Keydets Add Four Freshmen: VMI has added four freshmen to its roster this year in Dorian Albritton, Phillip Anglade, Gavin Stephenson and Tim Marshall. Albritton (Bronx, N.Y/Davidson Day School) was VMI s lone early signee, and averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game his senior season. His high school teammate, Anglade (Long Island, N.Y./Davidson Day School), went for 13 PPG and 11.9 RPG, while Stephenson (Columbia, Md./Atholton) scored 23 points per game and holds seven school records at his high school. Marshall (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown), meanwhile, averaged just under 15 points per game and was First Team All-Beach District. Coaching Staff Changes: This summer, VMI made a pair of coaching staff changes, adding one coach and promoting another. Longtime VMI assistant Jason Allison was promoted to Associate Coach - Recruiting Coordinator, and Ryan Mattocks was hired as the team s newest assistant. Mattocks' (Duke 11) primary duties include assisting the staff with practice and game preparation, scouting, recruiting, and player development. Mattocks also coordinates team travel and oversees study hall during the academic year. Mattocks served as an assistant coach at the high school level in North Carolina for five years, including stints at Apex ('07-'11) and Southern Durham ('06-'07). During that span his teams earned NCHSAA State Playoff nods each year. He helped guide the 2008 Apex team to the Eastern Regional Championship before going down in the State Finals. Allison begins his eighth season on Baucom's VMI staff and has spearheaded the Keydet basketball recruiting efforts over that time. He has been instrumental in landing and developing players that have played on teams that led Division I in scoring an unprecedented five straight times and also reached the Big South Conference championship game three times over the last six years.
