1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets Play Host to Radford Saturday Night VMI Seeks Eighth Win at Home with 8 P.M. Start VMI basketball returns to action Saturday, as the Keydets seek their 12th straight win at Cameron Hall in battling the Radford Highlanders. Game time is set for 8 p.m., and the contest will be shown on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. The Keydets enter off a win over Liberty on Tuesday evening, a game in which Stan Okoye scored 16 second-half points (18 overall) to spark VMI s win. The 57 points allowed was the lowest against a conference opponent since Feb. 14, VMI (8-9, 3-4) vs. Radford (3-15, 0-6) Saturday, January 14-8 p.m. ET Cameron Hall Lexington, Va. RADIO WZ Lexington Last Meeting with Radford (2/12/11) INTERNET- Live Audio and Stats online at Nick Gore scored eight straight points to spark a 27-5 second half run, and the VMI Keydets overcame early and shooting woes to top the Radford Highlanders, 71-58, in Big South basketball action Feb. 12 at Cameron Hall. After the score was tied at halftime, Radford opened the second half on a 6-1 run. Gore answered with an TV/Video- Live on MASN and old-fashioned three-point play with 17:17 to play, and after a Highlander three-pointer gave the visitors their biggest lead of the night, Gore tallied the next five points to keep the Keydets close. VMI was able to tie it on a Michael Sparks three-pointer with 13:40 remaining, and Austin Kenon hit a triple 1:30 later to give the Keydets the lead for good. VMI Tale Of The Tape RU A Win over Radford Would: Would be VMI s third straight win over the Highlanders. Would mark VMI s 12th straight home win, pulling the team to within one of the second-best home run in program history. The Keydets have won 13 straight games at home twice, streaks that ran from Feb. of 1995 through Feb. of 1996 and from Dec. of 1989 through Jan. of 1991 respectively. Make the Keydets 8-0 at home this season, as they would remain one of only a handful of Division I teams to be perfect at home and winless on the road (see page 2) 84.9 Points Per Game Points Allowed % Field Goal % 35.7% 49.1% FG % Allowed 44.1% 30.8% 3-Point FG % 29.2% Pt. The others are Boise State (9-0, 0-5), Florida (10-0, 0-4), SE Louisiana (6-0, 0-8) and Texas Southern (4-0, 0-11). Arkansas Pine-Bluff is winless on the road, having posted an 0-12 mark, but has yet to play a home game. Its home opener is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. Gabriel Continues to Move Up: After scoring nine points against Liberty on Jan. 10, senior Keith Gabriel now sits in seventh on VMI s all-time scoring list. Gabriel is exactly 100 points behind Travis Holmes 09, and also sits in fifth on VMI s all-time steals chart, with 187 career thefts. Home Is, Indeed, Sweet...: VMI is 7-0 in the friendly confines of Cameron Hall, including a 3-0 mark in conference play, with wins over Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, and most recently, Liberty. In home games this year, VMI is surrendering just 73 points per game, an average that drops to 66.3 in home conference contests....but The Road Is Not: On the road, however, the Keydets have struggled, going winless away from Lexington, with one win on a neutral court (Nov. 11 vs. The Citadel at Air Force). In VMI s away games, excluding the two contests against ranked opponents, the Keydets are giving up 93.1 points per game. When including the losses to Pitt and Ohio State, the number jumps to 95.1 PPG. Okoye on a Roll: VMI junior forward Stan Okoye continues to be on quite the roll over his past five games. Since the Dec. 31 win over Presbyterian, Okoye is averaging 21.2 points per game and 7.2 boards per contest, as well as three assists, two steals and 1.2 blocks. Those numbers are in spite of not starting Jan. 10 s game with Liberty, as well as struggling through foul trouble Jan. 7 at Winthrop. Lineup Limbo: VMI has now employed six different starting lineups over the past six games. Those lineups saw such inclusions as Quinton Upshur, who made his first two career starts against ODU and Presbyterian, as well as Wayne Whiting, who made his first career start Jan. 7 at Winthrop. Other Tidbits: VMI is 8-0 this year when leading with five minutes to go. The Keydets have yet to lose (4-0) when scoring over 90 points.
3 However, when an opponent scores 80 or more, VMI is just 1-8 on the season. The Keydets are also 0-5 when committing equal or more than the number of turnovers committed by their opponent. Okoye, Defense Pace VMI Win Over Liberty: Stan Okoye had 18 points, 16 in the second half, and the VMI Keydets held the Liberty Flames to the lowest point total for an conference opponent in nearly seven years as VMI defeated Liberty, 71-57, in Big South basketball action Tuesday night, Jan. 10 at Cameron Hall. Okoye did not start Tuesday's contest, but his VMI (8-9, 3-4 Big South) teammates picked him up with a strong defensive effort, holding Liberty (5-13, 0-6) to just 24 points in the first half. The junior's 16 second half points fueled his team's 53.3% shooting (16 for 30) in that period, and the strong defensive effort continued as well, as the Keydets held the Flames' Jesse Sanders, last year's Big South Player of the Year, to a season-low three points and season-low equaling three assists en route to pulling away for the win. Liberty's 57 points marked the lowest output by a Keydet Big South opponent since Feb. 14, 2005, a VMI win over Radford, as VMI held the Flames to 23 of 61 from the floor (37.7%), and just one Liberty player, Antwan Burrus, scored in double figures. VMI on Television: VMI Basketball will appear six times on television/national broadband during the campaign. The Keydets return to the airwaves Jan. 14, facing Radford on MASN. The two games with Liberty, both Jan. 10 s matchup in Lexington and Feb. 14 s game at Liberty (Flames Sports) round out the scheduled regular season TV appearances, following early-season games with Pitt, Ohio State and The Citadel. The Feb. 14 game will also be shown on ESPN3.com. In addition to the televised contests, all VMI home basketball games and road Big South Conference contests may be viewed on video-ondemand on the internet on the Big South Network. Cost per game is $4.95 and season packages are available by signing up at VMI Rally Falls Short at Winthrop: Keith Gabriel had 26 points, but Andre Jones notched 27 of his own and Reggie Middleton posted a double-double, helping the Winthrop Eagles survive a late VMI rally and prevail, 91-84, over the Keydets in Big South basketball action Saturday, Jan. 7 in Rock Hill, S.C. After VMI (7-9, 2-4 Big South) took a lead with 5:56 left in the first half, the Eagles (6-10, 3-2) closed the period on a 13-5 run, climbing within one at the break. The home team then took the advantage early in the second half and held it for the final 18:11, leading by as many as 10 before VMI closed the game well, cutting its deficit to five points twice in the final minute. The Keydets could not get any closer, however, and Winthrop broke VMI's two-game win streak in the series between the schools. In addition to Jones' exploits, Middleton had 18 points and 12 assists, while Matt Morgan added 20 points of his own. The Keydets got 16 points and eight rebounds out of D.J. Covington, who played a season-high 33 minutes, but Stan Okoye suffered through foul trouble and played just 17 minutes, scoring 13 points. Covington Posts Season-Highs: Sophomore center D. J. Covington played a season high 30 minutes in Jan. 2 s win over Gardner-Webb and scored 10 points -then topped it two games later with 16 points and eight rebounds in 33 minutes of action in Jan. 7 s Winthrop game. Covington has been working back from a back ailment that has limited his playing time the first half of the season. Keydets Fall to UNC Asheville, 94-85: Stan Okoye posted 23 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, but the UNC Asheville Bulldogs tallied five players in double figures en route to a win over the VMI Keydets in Big South basketball action Thursday night, Jan. 5 in Asheville, N.C. After trailing throughout the first half, VMI (7-8, 2-3 Big South) cut its deficit to four, 49-45, on a three-point play by Okoye with 17:43 to play. From there, Asheville (9-6, 4-0) went on an 18-8 run to increase its lead to 14, and the Keydets could not get closer than eight points the rest of the way. In addition to Okoye, VMI saw Keith Gabriel post 20 points, as he moved into 10th place on the Institute's all-time scoring list, surpassing Radee Skipworth '05. Michael Sparks also had a strong night, tying a season-high with 19 points, while Rodney Glasgow added 10 markers and chipped in five assists. Keydets Knock Off Gardner-Webb, 76-72: Stan Okoye had 25 points and seven rebounds, and Ron Burks capped a 19-point night with a driving layup with 40 seconds to go, helping the VMI Keydets defeat the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 76-72, in Big South basketball action Monday night, Jan. 2 at VMI's Cameron Hall. Two nights after posting a season-high 27 points, Okoye had seven assists, three blocks and four steals to go along with his 25-point effort. Burks had a season-high 19, including four threepointers, one shy of his career high, while Michael Sparks (13) and D.J. Covington (10) also finished in double-figure scoring. Covington's 10 points came on a night where he played 30 minutes, 20 more than his previous season-high. VMI Holds on For Overtime Win Over Presbyterian: Stan Okoye had a season-high 27 points, Keith Gabriel tied the game in the final moments of regulation and D.J. Covington scored four crucial points in overtime, helping the VMI Keydets defeat the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, in overtime, Saturday afternoon, Dec. 31 at Cameron Hall. The contest was VMI's first overtime game since Dec. 2, 2010, and the Keydets' first OT victory since Feb. 4, 2009, a road win over the Winthrop Eagles. The Keydets shot 26 for 47 (55.3%) from the floor, led by Okoye's efforts and 17 points from Gabriel. The result snapped a threegame winning streak for the Blue Hose, who were led by Khalid Mutakabbir's 24 points. VMI Drops Close Battle With Old Dominion: The Old Dominion Monarchs pulled away late, overcoming a career-high tying 34 points from VMI's Keith Gabriel to eake out an win Thursday night, December 22, in Norfolk, Va. VMI, coming off a 10-day layoff for exams, fell to 5-7 on the year heading into the holiday break. Old Dominion snapped a three-game skid to pull its season overall mark to 6-6. Gabriel was the lone Keydet to tally double figures and reached the 34-point mark for the third time in his career while surpassing the 20-point plateau in a game for the 27th time. He hit 12-of- 22 shots from the field including four 3-pointers. Gabriel Lights Up ODU: It may have been fitting that Dec. 22 s VMI/ODU game was held over the Christmas holiday, as despite VMI s eventual loss, Keydet Keith Gabriel lit up the Monarchs for a career-high tying 34 points. It was the third time in his career that he had hit the plateau, with the previous effort coming in 2009 versus Lynchburg College. Gabriel came off the bench in the Dec. 22 contests, doing so for the first time this season. Upshur Provides Spark: In the two games against Central Penn and Milligan College in early December, freshman Quinton Upshur averaged 13.5 points and his 9- of-13 shots from the field for 69.2 percent. He also nailed two-of-three behind the arc and posted a 3.5 RPG average and had eight steals over the two games. Upshur posted season and career highs in back-to-back games with 12 points against Central Penn and 15 points against Milligan. Upshur also had 11 points against Longwood on Dec. 12 to run his double-figure scoring streak to three. The strong push earned Upshur his first career start on Dec. 22 against ODU, where he scored nine points.

VMI (5-6) responded with a 7-0 spurt, cutting the lead to 13-9 with the game still less than three minutes old, but the homestanding Lancers came back with a 8-2 push, giving them a 10-point lead. Longwood would lead by double digits for the remainder of the contest, as the Lancers earned their first win over VMI since Nov. 30, The Lancers blistered the nets in both halves, but especially in the first 20 minutes, hitting 22 of 39 (56.4 percent) in the first half. That included 12 of 21 (57.1 percent) from beyond the three-point line, as Carey scored 26 of his game-high 30 in that period. Martiz Washington added 20 overall, while Jeremiah Bowman scored 19. VMI Gets Balanced Scoring in Rout of Milligan: The VMI Keydets shot a blistering 64.4 percent from the field, led by Michael Sparks' 19 points, and defeated the Milligan College Buffaloes in basketball action Saturday afternoon, Dec. 10 at Cameron Hall. After four ties and five lead changes in the first several minutes, the Keydets (5-5) used a pair of runs, 13-3 and 13-4, to push their lead to 16 with 8:20 left in the first half. Milligan (4-6) climbed back within 11 moments later, but VMI went on an 11-3 run to take a 19-point advantage, and was not threatened the rest of the way. The Keydets shot 38 of 59 from the floor, including 18 of 24 (75 percent) in the first half, and posted 22 assists on their 38 baskets. Five Keydets scored in double figures, all ranging from 14 to 19 points, a list that included Quinton Upshur, who had a career-high 15. The contest marked the most points VMI had scored since Nov. 29, 2010, a 151-point outburst against Central Penn College, and was the 48th time the Keydets had notched at least 100 points under head coach Duggar Baucom. In addition, the 12 three-pointers made against Millgan was the first time in seven games that the Keydets had drained 10 or more treys in a game this season. Okoye Strong Against Coastal: Stan Okoye led VMI in scoring in both games on the Keydets recent swing through South Carolina, including posting 25 points Thursday at Coastal Carolina. With those 25 points, Okoye is now averaging just under 16 points per game in his career against the Chants (15.7), including 23.5 PPG over the last two contests between the schools. Six in a Row?: After winning its fifth consecutive NCAA scoring title last season, the Keydets will seek #6 this year. No other school has ever led Division I in scoring more than three consecutive years. So far this season, VMI is averaging points per contest, and through the Jan. 8 stat update, ranked third nationally in that category. Bombs Away: The Keydets also paced Division I in three-pointers last season, making 11.3 per contest. They return three players who averaged at least 1.6 treys per game, in Keith Gabriel, Michael Sparks and Rodney Glasgow, and through games of Dec. 18, were 16th nationally in the category. Okoye Goes Over 1,000: With 12 points against #3 Ohio State Nov. 23, Stan Okoye went over the 1,000 career point mark. Okoye is the 36th Keydet to surpass that plateau, and second in two seasons, after Keith Gabriel did it last year. In a coincidental item, Gabriel also accomplished the feat in the fifth game of the year, surpassing the mark against Southern Virginia. Keydets Fall to #3 Ohio State: Playing in their first game with a ranked opponent since 2006, the VMI Keydets found the going tough after intermission and fell to the third-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, at Value City Arena Wednesday night, Nov. 23. The homestanding Buckeyes (5-0), who have won 27 straight on their home floor, placed five in double figures scoring and were led by guard William Buford with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor. Also hitting double figures for OSU was sophomore Jared Sullinger who collected his 20th career double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Aaron Craft tallied 13 points and dished out eight assists while forward Deshaun Thomas and J.D. Weatherspoon added 11 points and 10 points, respectively. The Keydets (3-2) were paced by senior guard Keith Gabriel who posted his third 20-point game of the year with 21 points. Senior guard/forward Ron Burks added a season-high 19 points and six rebounds and junior forward Stan Okoye scored 12 points on his way to becoming the 36th player in VMI history to reach the 1,000 point career plateau. Okoye s Second Half Dominance Leads Keydets to Win: Stan Okoye scored 14 points during a game-breaking, 23-6 second half run, and Michael Sparks drilled a crucial three-pointer with 14 seconds to go, helping the VMI Keydets over the UMBC Retrievers, 84-79, in men's basketball action Nov. 19 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. Okoye finished with 24 points, but scored 14 of those in the deciding spurt. With VMI down 11, Sparks scored five straight to start the tide's turning, and Okoye went on to score 14 of the Keydets' next 18 points over a stretch of 6:36 on the game clock. He added a block,
7 two steals and two rebounds, as VMI (3-1) went on to take a lead after a pair of Okoye free throws with 8:13 left. UMBC (0-4) pulled even on two occasions late, and 73-73, but after a three-point play by Chris De La Rosa cut the Keydet lead to two, Keith Gabriel found an open Sparks in the left corner for the deciding three-pointer, which would seal the home team's victory. In addition to Okoye, Gabriel added 24 of his own, 16 of which came in the first half. Sparks added 11 and Nick Gore had 10, while De La Rosa led UMBC with his double-double, 17 points and 10 assists. Big Second Half Sends VMI Over Alice Lloyd: The VMI Keydets used a 10-0 run early in the second half to break open a close game and go on to knock off a spirited Alice Lloyd Eagle squad, , in basketball action Nov. 15 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. In a game that was tied at halftime, 39-39, the Keydets used defensive pressure to force eight turnovers in the first 4:17 of the second half. All of VMI's points in the deciding run came off turnovers, as the Keydets forced 27 ALC miscues and held a 43-8 edge in points off turnovers for the game. Quinton Upshur had five steals in just 19 minutes, pacing the Keydet efforts, while Keith Gabriel had four and Nick Gore grabbed three steals. Offensively, the Keydets were led by Gabriel, who had 22 points, as the team exploded for 62 second half markers. Freshman Jordan Weethee rebounded from a scoreless first half to score 17 second half points. Gore had 17 markers, Stan Okoye had 19 and Ron Burks filled up the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds and seven assists. Keydets Drop All-Military Classic Championship to Air Force: Michael Lyons scored 20 points, Taylor Broekhuis had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds and the Air Force Falcons defeated the VMI Keydets, 75-65, to win the first annual All- Military Classic Saturday night, Nov. 12, in Colorado Springs, Colo. VMI (1-1) was led by Ron Burks, who had 15 points, while Keith Gabriel chipped in 14 and Michael Sparks went 5 for 5 from the floor, adding 13 points. Air Force's (2-0) Lyons was named the Tournament MVP, while Gabriel and Rodney Glasgow were also named to the All-Tournament Team. Keydets Down The Citadel For Fourth Straight Season-Opening Win: VMI posted six players in double figures, led wire to wire and survived a furious rally by The Citadel Bulldogs to take a win in game two of the All-Military Classic, contested late Friday, Nov. 11 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The contest was the season opener for both clubs. After pulling away midway through the second half, the Keydets took a lead with 3:58 remaining, thanks to a jumper by Nick Gore. The Bulldogs responded with a 17-4 run, a spurt that brought them back within two with just 14 seconds remaining. After Marshall Harris III drilled a trey to cap that push, he fouled Keith Gabriel on the ensuing inbounds play. Gabriel hit 1 of 2 at the charity stripe, giving Citadel a chance to tie, but the Bulldogs could not get off a three-point try before time expired, giving the Keydets a win. Stan Okoye led VMI with 19 points, while Rodney Glasgow and Gabriel had 17 markers apiece. Ron Burks added 11, all in the second half, while Gore finished just one rebound shy of a double-double, notching 14 points and nine boards despite going against 6-9 Citadel center Mike Groselle for the majority of the game. Groselle led the Bulldogs with 25 points and 11 rebounds, playing 37 minutes in the thin Colorado Springs air, a full five minutes more than any other player. Williams 08 Selected to 50 Greatest Players List: VMI alumnus Reggie Williams 08, who played parts of two seasons with the Golden State Warriors and is playing in Spain during the current NBA labor dispute, was named the 44th greatest college basketball player ever in a list published by Grantland.com on Nov. 2. Williams led Division I in scoring both his junior and senior seasons at VMI.
