1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Basketball Plays Host to Central Penn for Home Opener Tuesday Face USCAA School for the Third Consecutive Season VMI basketball will return to action Tuesday, opening its home schedule at 7 p.m. against the Knights of Central Penn College. VMI fell one point short of placing seven players in double figures, as the Keydets were paced by Stan Okoye, who had 22 points, including 13 in the second half. Sparks added a season-high 16, and Rodney Glasgow had 15 points and 10 assists, marking VMI's first double double of the season. Keydets in Home Openers: VMI plays host to Central Penn Tuesday in the Keydets home opener for the season, and the Keydets will be seeking their seventh straight win in a home opener. The streak dates back to , head coach Duggar Baucom s first year, and a loss to Army. Okoye Preseason Player of the Year: Senior Stan Okoye was voted Big South Preseason Player of the Year prior to the start of this season. He is, in fact, the first Keydet to be named the conference preseason POTY since VMI joined the conference for the season, and is the first VMI hoops standout to earn any Preseason Player of the Year honor from a conference since , when Jason Conley was tabbed with that honor by the Southern Conference. Okoye Looking for Dual Top-10 s: Stan Okoye currently sits in a unique spot on the VMI record charts, ranking high on the VMI career charts in both points (13th) and rebounds (8th). Should Okoye get into the top 10 in VMI career scoring, a mark he is 82 points from, he would become one of only three players to be in the top 10 in both categories, joining Ron Carter 78 and Reggie Williams 08, the only two Keydets to ever play in the NBA. VMI Falls to Army, 80-74: The VMI Keydets had cut a double-digit deficit down to just one with under five minutes to go, thanks to five straight points by Stan Okoye, but the Army Black Knights answered with a 6-0 run and went on to defeat the Keydets, 80-74, in the third-place game of the All- Military Classic, contested Nov. 11 in Charleston, S.C. The Black Knights controlled most of the second half, stretching their lead to double figures on several occasions until a hard Army foul on Keydet (0-2) guard Joe Carr, which came with just under six minutes to go, seemed to fire up VMI. Okoye hit a three on VMI's next possession, reducing the lead to three, and then scored again on the ensuing try to make it a game. Army responded with a three-pointer by Josh Herbeck, and on VMI s next trip, the Keydets misfired on multiple shot attempts despite no less than three offensive rebounds by freshman Phillip Anglade, and when Army was finally able to snare a loose ball, Mo Williams converted a three-point play off a breakaway layup, pushing the margin to and the Keydets could get no closer than five the rest of the way. Keydets Drop Season Opener to The Citadel, 84-76: Mike Groselle had 21 points and 15 rebounds and The Citadel Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the floor, help-

3 ing them defeat the VMI Keydets, 84-76, in game two of the All-Military Classic tournament Saturday, Nov. 10 at McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C. Brian Brown led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, while D.J. Covington added 15 points and nine rebounds. The Keydets, however, could not overcome Citadel s 27 of 54 night from the floor. The Bulldogs also hit 23 of 28 free throws (82.1 percent), including 12 of 13 by Marshall Harris III, compared to 8 of 10 for VMI (80 percent). Baucom 12 Wins Away: Last season, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom became just the second coach in Keydet history to surpass the 100-win plateau, as he hit triple digits with the Feb. 18 win over William & Mary. With just 12 more victories, Baucom will tie Bart Bellairs for the most wins ever at VMI with 116. Baucom Moving Up: VMI head coach Duggar Baucom not only won his 100th game at the Institute last season and closed on former coach Bart Bellairs for the school record (116), but he moved up the Big South charts as well. Baucom has logged 104 wins as a part of the Big South, the ninthmost all-time. He is three from tying Randy Peele, former head coach at UNC Greensboro and Winthrop, for eighth on that list. Keydets to be Broadcast Seven Times on TV: VMI basketball can be seen on various networks seven times this season, beginning with Nov. 15 s Virginia Tech game in Blacksburg which will be shown on ESPN3. West Virginia (Root Sports- Pittsburgh) on Nov. 28, Jan. 9 against Liberty at Cameron Hall (Flames Sports Network) and Jan. 19 at Coastal Carolina (ESPNU) wiil follow, with ESPNU also showing UNC Asheville at VMI on Feb. 8. A MASN broadcast of VMI at Campbell (Feb. 16) follows, with VMI at Liberty (Flames Sports Network) on Feb. 26 wrapping up the Keydet broadcast schedule. In addition, all VMI home games and conference games will be shown on the Big South Network at a cost of $4.95, and audio broadcasts of all games, home and away, are available free of charge at and Schedule Includes Two First- Time Opponents: This year s VMI basketball schedule includes familiar faces, such as Virginia Tech (Nov. 15) and the second straight meeting with West Virginia (Nov. 28). The Keydets will also be facing two first-time opponents, and will do so in back to back games against the Virginia University of Lynchburg (Dec. 3) and Wright State (Dec. 8). Keydets Add Four Freshmen: VMI has added four freshmen to its roster this year in Dorian Albritton, Phillip Anglade, Gavin Stephenson and Tim Marshall. Albritton (Bronx, N.Y/Davidson Day School) was VMI s lone early signee, and averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game his senior season. His high school teammate, Anglade (Long Island, N.Y./Davidson Day School), went for 13 PPG and 11.9 RPG, while Stephenson (Columbia, Md./Atholton) scored 23 points per game and holds seven school records at his high school. Marshall (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown), meanwhile, averaged just under 15 points per game and was First Team All-Beach District. Coaching Staff Changes: This summer, VMI made a pair of coaching staff changes, adding one coach and promoting another. Longtime VMI assistant Jason Allison was promoted to Associate Coach - Recruiting Coordinator, and Ryan Mattocks was hired as the team s newest assistant. Mattocks' (Duke 11) primary duties include assisting the staff with practice and game preparation, scouting, recruiting, and player development. Mattocks also coordinates team travel and oversees study hall during the academic year. Mattocks served as an assistant coach at the high school level in North Carolina for five years, including stints at Apex ('07-'11) and Southern Durham ('06-'07).
