1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES VMI Wraps Up Non-Conference Play Against Southern Virginia Tuesday Keydets Are 21-2 in Home Non-Conference Games Over the Past Three-Plus Seasons VMI Last Time Out: VMI junior guard Austin Kenon converted six straight free throws in the final 14.1 seconds of regulation to hold off High Point in a Keydet win before a sellout crowd at the Millis Center Saturday night. VMI won its first road game of and handed High Point its first home loss of the season. Kenon finished the night a perfect eight-for-eight from the stripe and scored 20 points. The Keydets were led in scoring by freshman forward Stan Okoye, who produced his fourth straight 20-point, 10- rebound effort with career-highs of 24 points and 14 rebounds. Okoye tallied 20 of his points in the first half. VMI also got a double-double effort from sophomore guard/forward Ron Burks who scored 19 points and collected 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the year. Sophomore guard Keith Gabriel and senior guard Adam Lonon scored 14 and 10 points, respectively. Stan Okoye earned his second straight Freshman of the Week accolade from the Big South Conference on Monday. The rookie from Raleigh, N.C. has averaged 22.0 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.5 blocks while shooting over 59% from the floor over the past four games. In those four contests, Okoye has had at least 20 points and 10 rebounds each time out, as he now leads the team with five double-doubles on the year. With five three-pointers against Seton Hall on Dec. 12, Austin Kenon topped the 200 career made three-pointers threshold to become eligible for Big South and NCAA career rankings. Kenon currently ranks among the top 20 alltime in NCAA Division I history with s made per game, while also ranking fourth on the Big South s all-time list. In addition, Kenon passed Ramon Williams 90 for second on VMI s all-time three-pointers list, currently with 221. Kenon became the 34th member of VMI s 1,000-point club by scoring 18 points against Gardner-Webb on Jan. 16. He currently has 1,035 points in his 66 career games, averaging 15.7 points per outing. In , VMI is shooting to become the first school in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in scoring for four straight years. Last season, VMI joined Furman ( ) and Loyola Marymount ( ) as the only teams to lead the country in scoring for three years in a row. This year, the Keydets lead the nation with 90.2 points per game. A VMI win against Southern Virginia would: Mark the first time this season VMI won back-to-back games. Give the Keydets a 22-2 mark in home non-conference games since VMI adopted its fast-paced style prior to the season. Improve the Keydets to 6-4 at Cameron Hall this season. Two days later, Okoye surpassed that effort with a 24- point, 14-rebound night at High Point, helping VMI to its first road win of the season. Against Big South opponents in his first trip through the league, Okoye is averaging 14.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks while shooting 50% from the floor. Keydets Score First Road Win of Season at High Point: When looking at VMI s Jan. 23 game at High Point beforehand, it sure didn t look like a contest that the Keydets were in line to win. Not only was VMI 0-8 on the road this season, but High Point entered 8-0 at the Millis Center, where VMI had managed just one win alltime. The Keydets, however, scored 15 of the first 17 points out of halftime to extend its six-point lead out to 19, then hung on for a victory over the Panthers. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Keydets in Big South play, while dropping High Point back into a five-way tie for third place in the conference standings. In the win, the Keydets scored 94 points, though accumulated just nine assists on 32 made field goals. The last time the Keydets had fewer than nine assists came back on Jan. 23, 2008, when the Keydets managed just six assists when scoring 41 points against Winthrop. The Keydets were led in scoring and rebounding for the fourth consecutive game by freshman Stan Okoye, who notched new career highs with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while matching his career-best with four blocks. Random Notes: Some notes just don t have any other place, so they go here: The Keydets are 6-4 when scoring at least 93 points this season and are 0-8 when failing to do so. Conversely, VMI is 6-3 when allowing 93 points or less and 0-9 when allowing more than that number. VMI knocked off High Point on Jan. 23 despite being outscored in the second half, The Keydets have been outscored in the second half in each of the past eight games, dating back to the George Mason game on Dec. 22. Freshman Stan Okoye has started 10 games this season and come off the bench in eight contests. In his

3 Keydet Honors Stan Okoye - Big South Freshman of the Week (Jan. 18) - Big South Freshman of the Week (Jan. 25) 10 starts, Okoye has averaged 7.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and shot 39% from the floor. Coming off the bench, Okoye has averaged 18.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and shot 60% from the floor. The Keydets, however, stand 5-5 in those 10 games he has started and just 1-7 in those games he did not. Okoye Named Big South Freshman of the Week: VMI's Stan Okoye was named the Crons Brand Big South Basketball Freshman of the Week for games played Jan , as announced by the conference office. Okoye averaged 16.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 54.1 percent from the floor (20- of-37) in three games, including 20.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in two Big South contests. He hit 9-of-13 shots from the field and scored a career-high 21 points with 10 rebounds and four blocked shots against UNC Asheville, and followed with 20 points and 13 rebounds plus two blocks against Gardner-Webb all coming off the bench for the Keydets. The two double-doubles were Okoye s second and third of his young career, with the other having come against UNC Wilmington earlier in the year. On the week, Okoye was 8-of-10 from the line and finished 16-of-26 ( =61.5 percent) from the field in the two Big South games, as he became the first Keydet to be honored with a conference weekly award this season. Keydets On Track for Unprecedented Scoring Title: Through 18 games this season, VMI is the clear leader as the nation s top-scoring team, averaging 90.2 points per game. Entering Monday s play, the Keydets are over four points per game ahead of their closest competition, Texas (85.2), Villanova (84.9), Kansas (84.9) and Syracuse (84.1). Should VMI be able to hang on to its current lead at season s end, it would mark the first time in NCAA Division I history that a team has led the nation in scoring four consecutive years. VMI is currently tied with Furman ( ) and Loyola Marymount ( ) as the only schools to do so for three straight years. Dry Spell Dooms Keydets Against GWU: When VMI hit its opening two three-point attempts against Gardner-Webb on Jan. 16, things were looking good, as the Keydets led 6-2 just 34 seconds in. The marksmanship did not continue for the Keydets, however, as VMI hit on just two of its next 27 three-point attempts over the next 31- plus minutes. By that point, VMI trailed by 15 points with just eight minutes remaining. In those final eight minutes, however, the threes started going down, as VMI were 7-of-12 from beyond the arc down the stretch, cutting the lead to just three with 31 seconds remaining. Gardner-Webb hit five of its six free throws the rest of the way to win by eight, Keydets Stop Slide vs. Randolph: Thanks to a strong first-half effort, VMI snapped its longest losing streak in four seasons with a win over Randolph on Jan. 11. The Keydets shot 52 percent from the floor and forced 15 WildCat turnovers en route to a halftime advantage. VMI pushed the lead to 27 points in the second half before a late run by the visitors provided the final margin. The Keydets were led by sophomore Keith Gabriel, whose 24 points led VMI for the seventh time this season. Junior Austin Kenon drained five three-pointers in just eight attempts during his 18-point night, while freshman Joe Carr netted career highs with eight points, eight assists and three steals in 15 minutes off the bench. Road Not Kind to Keydets: Playing away from Cameron Hall has not been an enjoyable experience for the Keydets this season, as they ve gone 1-8 on the road. While VMI has averaged 97.9 points, a 43% field goal percentage and +6.4 turnover margin in home games this season, VMI has scored just 82.6 points, shot just 40% from the floor and has committed more turnovers than its opponents on the road this season. In addition, the Keydets are shooting four percent lower from the free throw line (70% to 66%) and averaging two less steals per game (12.3 to 10.2) on the road this season. (For complete comparison stats, see chart on page seven.) It should not be overlooked that VMI has taken on a tough schedule on the road this year. Among the opponents VMI has played on the road this season are a 15-3 Virginia Tech team, a 15-6 Richmond squad, a 12-6 Seton Hall team that has lost five contests to teams ranked in the top 16 in the RPI, and a 13-7 George Mason team that is currently 8-1 at home. After hitting on just 63.1% of their attempts in the first five games, the Keydets have converted 70.5% of their free throws since that time. VMI currently ranks third in the Big South at the charity stripe in league play, shooting 70.1% from the stripe. Okoye Fares Well Vs. CAA: Freshman forward Stan Okoye has saved his best outings for some of VMI s toughest opponents this season. In two match-ups against foes from the Colonial Athletic Association, Okoye contributed two of his strongest games of the season. Taking on UNC Wilmington on Nov. 24, Okoye had his first career double-double, totaling then-career highs in points (18), rebounds (12) and minutes played (27). A month later, Okoye equaled that effort with 18 points, while shooting an impressive 70% (7-of-10) from the floor. He also chipped in with a block and two steals in VMI s near upset of George Mason. Kenon On Target: In only his second season on post, Austin Kenon ranked among the national leaders in 3- point shooting. The junior finished last season ranked sixth nationally in 3's made per game with 3.7 per outing. Kenon has now played in 66 career games, and already has 221 career three-balls (3.35 3pg), shooting 37.0% from distance. He currently ranks sixth in VMI history and just outside of the top 10 in Big South history in three-point percentage in his career. Kenon also ranks among the top 20 alltime in NCAA Division I in three s made per game, while ranking fourth on the Big South charts in that category. Reggie Williams 08 Named NBA D- League Performer of the Week: Reggie Williams, the Keydets' all-time leading scorer and 2008 graduate of VMI, was named NBA Development League Performer of the Week for games played during the week of Dec. 21. Williams led Sioux Falls to a 2-0 record on the week, including two home victories over the Springfield Armor. Williams averaged 26.5 points, shooting 65 percent (22-of-34) from the field during the Big South Conference Preseason Poll 1. The forward notched his third 30-plus point of the season outing on Dec. 26 when he scored 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting from the floor. Pirates Three-Point Barrage Sinks Keydets: Thanks to 20 three-pointers, including 12 by Jamel Jackson, Seton Hall defeated VMI, , on Saturday, Jan. 12. The 20 three-pointers made by the Pirates are the most given up by the Keydets since going to their up-tempo system four seasons ago, as were the 12 threes converted by Jackson. It marked the first time in over a year that an opponent had hit more threes than the Keydets, who drained an impressive 17 on the afternoon. The last game during which an opponent converted more threes than VMI came on Dec. 6, 2008, when UNC Asheville Overwhelming Outbursts VMI usually uses frantic outbursts to take control of games. Tech also held a advantage on the boards and outscored the Keydets in the paint, VMI Finds Shooting Stroke Versus Charleston Southern (Again): There just seems to be something about playing Charleston Southern that agrees with VMI s long-distance shooters. For the fifth time during the Keydets seven-game win streak against the Bucs, VMI hit at least 15 three-pointers, scoring a victory on Dec. 5. VMI hit a season-high 52% (16-of-31) from beyond the arc, including a combined 11-of-17 from sophomores Michael Sparks and Keith Gabriel. The Keydets also set a season best in field goal percentage (55%) against the Bucs. VMI also turned the ball over just 13 times and got 52 points off the bench to even its Big South mark at 1-1. 6 It s Raining 3 s: Against Lynchburg on Nov. 30, VMI had its best 3-point shooting night of the season up to that point, hitting on 18-of-47 from distance for a 38.3% clip. The 18 made threes are the most for VMI since draining 18 in a win at Liberty on Feb. 24, 2009, which also marked the last time VMI shot as high a percentage as they did against the Hornets. Leading the way against LC were Michael Sparks, whose 7-for point shooting night led him to career highs in 3 s and points (25), while Keith Gabriel matched his career-best with 34 points thanks to six threeballs. Burks Fills It Up: In VMI s win over Lynchburg earlier this season, Ron Burks contributed just seven points, but made his presence known elsewhere on the stat sheet. The sophomore notched a new Cameron Hall record with 13 assists, while also setting new career highs with seven steals and two blocks. VMI Runs Past West Va. Wesleyan: Thanks to six players in double figures, led by freshman Nick Gore s 20 points and eight rebounds, the Keydets improved to 2-0 at home for the fourth straight season with a win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Nov. 18. The Keydets forced 27 turnovers while committing just seven, leading to a 37-2 advantage in points off turnovers. The seven turnovers committed by VMI were the fewest since March 3, 2007, when the Keydets made just seven turnovers in an loss in the Big South Championship Final to Winthrop, a span of 64 games. Against WVWC, VMI set a new school record and a new facility mark by hoisting up 63 3-point attempts, while making a season-best 16. Board It Up: In VMI s Nov. 18 win over West Virginia Wesleyan, rebounds were flying left and right. The two teams combined for 136 rebounds, with the Bobcats setting a new Cameron Hall record with 72 total boards. VMI, meanwhile, grabbed an unbelievable 38 offensive rebounds, far and away the most by a Keydet team since moving to the current, up-tempo style. That led to 27 second-chance points, the most by VMI since a win over Howard on Dec. 8, Contributing to VMI s 64 total rebounds were eight players that at least matched their career high in the category, led by Stan Okoye s nine. Grabbing eight caroms apiece were Nick Gore and Keith Gabriel, while Adam Lonon, Ron Burks and Michael Sparks each had six boards. Keydets Slowed by Spiders: VMI s 2009 meeting with the Richmond Spiders did not turn out as well as those in 2006 and 2008, when the Keydets were victorious over their in-state rivals. Instead, the Red, White and Yellow were taken to task by a Richmond squad picked third in the Atlantic 10 behind national powers Dayton and Xavier. In the loss at the Robins Center, the Keydets were held to just 32 percent shooting from the floor while being outrebounded The Spiders used their size advantage to outscore the Keydets in the paint, shooting 63 percent from the floor. Also in the game, VMI committed more turnovers (20) than the Spiders (16), marking the first time in 45 games that the Keydets lost the turnover battle. As a result, Richmond held a advantage in points off turnovers, a stat that went the Keydets way in 27 of 32 games last year. 7 Burks Leads Keydets Past Army in Opener: Ron Burks kicked off his sophomore season right where he left off his impressive freshman campaign, notching his first career double-double to lead VMI past Army, on Friday, Nov. 13. Burks matched his then-career high with 15 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds against the Black Knights, whom the Keydets won back-to-back meetings against for the first time ever. The Mitchellville, Md. native also chipped in six steals in the win while knocking down five of his six free throws on the evening. Turnin Em Over: As always in Duggar Baucom s up-tempo system, turnovers were key to VMI s opening night win over Army. The Keydets caused 34 Black Knight turnovers, which led to 38 Keydet points in the victory. Army s 34 turnovers were the most that VMI had caused by a Division I opponent since forcing Radford into 41 on Jan. 25, 2007 in a victory at Cameron Hall. Also last season, VMI did not lose the turnover battle in a single game, forcing at least 15 miscues in every contest. In addition, VMI was 23-4 when outscoring its opponent in points off turnovers, as they did in this year s opener. Season Opener at Home a Rarity: VMI kicked off its campaign at Cameron Hall, a rarity for the program of late. The last time that VMI had opened a season at home came back on Nov. 21, 2005, when VMI lost a contest to Army in the team s first game under head coach Duggar Baucom. The Keydets fared better this season, scoring a win on opening night. Austin Kenon was one of five Keydets in double figures, notching a game-high 24 points on 17-of-20 free throw shooting. Overall, VMI has fared well in home openers, winning their first home game of the season in 10 of the past 11 years, with only the 2005 setback against Army breaking the string. Williams & Holmes Selected in 2009 NBDL Draft: A pair of former Keydets were selected in the 2009 NBA Development League Draft, held on Thursday, Nov. 5. In the third round, Reggie Williams 08 was selected by the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Skyforce, while Travis Holmes 09 was taken by the Utah Flash in the event s sixth round. Holmes twin brother, Chavis (Charlotte, N.C.), meanwhile, is currently averaging 14.6 points and 1.6 steals while hitting 93% of his free throws for Caja Rioja in Spain, helping lead the club to a 10-4 start. The selections of Williams and Holmes marked the first time that players from VMI had been selected in the NBDL Draft in the league s nine-year history. Baucom Named NABC District 3 Coach of the Year: VMI head coach Duggar Baucom earned District 3 Coach of the Year honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) last March after leading the Keydets to historic 24-8 season. Baucom, who was also included as a finalist for the last year's Hugh Durham Award, given annually to the top mid-major coach in the country, led the Keydets to their best season in over 30 years in The team's 24 wins were the second-most in school history, while Baucom took VMI to its second Championship Final appearance in the past three years. Covington, a 6-8, 230 senior at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, Va. where he is coached by Eric Acra, averaged 15 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks per game his junior season playing both the power forward and center positions. He was named First Team All-Tidewater Conference Independent Schools and was All-State honorable mention. Covington is a three-time All-TCIS selection and has been named All-Virginia Prep League three times. Covington's brother, Charles Clark, is an All-American sprinter for the Florida State track team and ran for the USA national team at the World Championships in Berlin where he placed fifth in the 200-meter dash. "D.J. is a versatile, explosive and game-changing athlete," said Baucom of Covington. "He will give us a physical presence around the basket that we have not had before at VMI. He runs like a deer, has a soft shooting touch, and plays above the rim."
