1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets Face West Virginia For First Time Since 1969 VMI Will Host Central Penn College on Monday Night VMI basketball looks to continue its perfect start to the season, facing the West Virginia Mountaineers Saturday night in Charleston, W. Va. Game time at the Charleston Civic Center is set for 7 p.m. Following the game, the Keydets return home to host Central Penn College Monday evening at Cameron Hall. In their last contest, VMI went to 5-0 for the first time in the modern era, defeating Southern Virginia VMI jumped out to a 30-plus point advantage early, before SVU shot 10 of 13 from three-point range in the second half en route to closing to within 14. A late Keydet run put the game away, and gave VMI its first 5-0 start since In the Southern Virginia game, freshman D.J. Covington made his presence felt, equaling a school record with nine blocked shots. He had five swats in the first half and four in the second, en route to becoming the second Keydet ever to reject nine shot attempts (Eric Mann, 2000). Only two VMI players, Mann and Lewis Preston, had ever blocked more than six shots in a game. Covington missed a triple-double by just one block and one rebound, as he posted nine rebounds and 13 points to go along with the nine rejections. Keith Gabriel also had a momentous occasion in the SVU game, as he hit a three-pointer with 8:47 left in the first half to give himself 1,000 career points. Gabriel became the 34th player in VMI history to surpass that plateau, and now ranks 33rd on the all-time Keydet scoring list, as he passed Greg Fittz during Tuesday s game. The last meeting between the two clubs happened on Jan. 15, 1969, five days before Richard Nixon was sworn in as the 37th President, and was won by VMI in Morgantown. Last Meeting with Central Penn College: The Keydets have never played Central Penn. A VMI win against West Virginia would: Continue VMI s best start to a season since , when the Keydets won their first eight games. The Keydets sit at 5-0 for the first time in the modern era, and first time overall since VMI opened that year 8-0, winning by such scores as and VMI has not faced WVU in more than 41 years, as the schools last did battle on Jan. 15, 1969, a game won by VMI in Morgantown. That game is one of just four VMI victories over the Mountaineers, as WVU holds a 42-4 edge in the all-time series, a set that began in The schools were both members of the Southern Conference during a stretch from Strangely, that 1916 game also marked VMI s sixth game of the year, and they entered the contest 5-0 and looking for the first 6-0 start in school history. The Keydets won that game, 32-29, and now look to start the season the same way, with a win over West Virginia to go to 6-0. Meeting Final Four School: Last season, WVU advanced to the Final Four, coming up short against Duke in the national semifinals. The Mountaineers will mark VMI s first opponent who advanced to the Final Four the previous year since , when the Keydets faced the Ohio State Buckeyes. Much the same as Ohio State had lost its leaders from the previous season, Mike Conley, Jr. and Greg Oden, West Virginia will not have DeSean Butler, who graduated this summer. Top-25 Vote: In this past week s Associated Press Top 25 Poll, the Keydets received a single vote, putting them on the other receiving votes listing. Fans may remember that VMI notched votes in four different Associated Press polls during its run to the Big South finals in Gabriel Goes Over 1,000: The number 34 is famous in the sporting world, as it is associated with such legendary figures as Nolan Ryan, Walter Payton and Hakeem Olajuwon. Keith Gabriel added that number to his basketball resume Tuesday night, when he hit a three-pointer with 8:47 left in the first half. That made him the 34th player in VMI history to go over 1,000 career points, as he joined Austin Kenon as the only current Keydets to do so. Gabriel now ranks 33rd on VMI s all-time scoring list, as he surpassed Greg Fittz during Tuesday night s contest. Baucom Moving Up: Despite only being at the Institute for five seasons, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom ranks fourth on the

Perfect Versus Non-Division I Schools: After defeating Southern Virginia Nov. 23, the Keydets are 22-0 against non-division I schools under head coach Duggar Baucom. VMI will take on its final non-division I opponent of the year on Nov. 29, facing Central Penn College. Block Party: The Keydets have amassed an impressive total of blocked shots already this season, and may assail last year s program record performance. Led by freshman D.J. Covington, who equaled a VMI record with nine blocks against Southern Virginia Tuesday night, the Keydets blocked a Cameron Hall record 13 shots against the Knights. That means VMI has already swatted away 35 attempts thie year. That puts them 1/3 of the way to the program s #5 performance, a 105-block effort in , and could give them a chance to better their 144-block performance from last season. Covington, Gabriel Lead Keydets to First 5-0 Start Since 1920 s: Freshman D.J. Covington had 13 points and tied a school record with nine blocks, while Keith Gabriel went over the 1,000 career point plateau and the VMI Keydets went to 5-0 for the first time in the modern era by defeating the Southern Virginia Knights Tuesday night at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. VMI's 5-0 start is the program's best in the modern era, as the Keydets had not accomplished that feat since the season. Covington's nine blocks tied Eric Mann's nine rejections against The Citadel on Jan. 15, Only one other Keydet had ever posted more than six rejections in a single contest. Covington also had nine points and nine rebounds, missing a triple-double by just one of each statistic. Gabriel started the contest 0 for 5, but finally hit the needed three-pointer at the 8:47 mark, becoming the 34th player in Keydet history, and second active VMI player, to surpass the 1,000-point plateau. Scouting Central Penn College: Central Penn will enter Monday night s game with a 5-3 overall mark, coming off a loss to Clarion in which three Clarion players posted double-doubles. Central Penn, whose mascot is the Knight, is in its first season playing as part of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). That is a national organization with 71 members in 24 states, and the Knights belong to that grouping for both men s and women s basketball. The game will also mark the second straight home game for VMI versus the Knights, as that is also the mascot for Southern Virginia. On The Horizon: Following the games with WVU and Central Penn, the Keydets open Big South play by taking on the Winthrop Eagles at Cameron Hall. Two seasons ago, nearly to the day of this year s game, a VMI win over Winthrop in the Big South opener launched the Keydets to their best BSC season ever, a year that ended with a berth in the finals of the conference s postseason tournament. VMI paced the nation relatively easily, scoring 5.5 more points per contest than the category s runner-up, BYU, and did so despite their lowest output per game in the Baucom era. This year, the Keydets will bid for a fifth straight scoring crown. Odd is Even Better: VMI will be looking to continue an odd trend, quite literally, in Each of the last two seasons ending in odd years, and , have seen VMI advance to the title game of the Big South Championship. Meanwhile, the even numbered years have concluded with first round losses. Cleaning Up the Glass: After only outrebounding an opponent three times last season, the Keydets got off to a strong start on the glass this year. For the first time in the Duggar Baucom era, VMI outrebounded an opponent for three straight games, as the Keydets held a +15 edge in the opener versus Randolph, eaked out a slim +2 margin against UMBC and then outrebounded UVA- Wise by 10 to accomplish the feat. The streak ended when Jacksonville State held a fourrebound edge on Nov. 18. On the glass, the Keydets have been led by Stan Okoye, who is averaging 10.5 RPG, while Stephen Sargent has grabbed five caroms a contest and Keith Gabriel sits at 5.3 RPG. Trio of TV Games Announced: VMI will have a trio of TV games this season, including the VMI/West Virginia game on Saturday, Nov. 27. That game will be shown on MASN regionally, while the games at Liberty and Winthrop will hit the airwaves from Lynchburg and Rock Hill. The Flames and Keydets will be shown on the Flames Television Network (1/20), while the Eagles and VMI will do battle on MASN (2/26). The VMI/Liberty game in Lexington (2/15) is also tenatively scheduled to be shown on Flames Television. VMI Announces Basketball Signees: Virginia Military Institute head basketball coach Duggar Baucom announced the signings of Brian Brown (Kings Mountain, N.C./Kings Mountain H.S.) and Quinton Upshur (Norfolk, Va./Booker T. Washington H.S.) to national letters-of-intent to attend VMI and play basketball for the Keydets. 5 "Both men bring a high level of character to our basketball family and will do very well in the classroom, in the Corps and on the basketball court. My staff has done an exceptional job again bringing in quality cadet-athletes to the Institute." Brown, a 5'11, 180 combo guard, averaged 19.7 points per game as a junior with 6.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. He shot 53 percent from the field in , including 36 percent from 3- point range. "Brian can really score, "said Baucom. "He is a very good three-point shooter but has the explosiveness to get in the lane and finish at the rim. Brian's versatility allows him to play both the point and off the ball as a shooting guard." Upshur is a 6-5, 190 forward who plays the wing position and averaged 14.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists as a junior. He is also a standout on the Booker T. Washington volleyball team. Q is very long and is a great athlete," says Baucom. "He will be very disruptive in our full court pressure defense but can also score in a variety of ways. He is an excellent rebounder from the wing position." Keydets Knock off Jacksonville St., 65-55: Keith Gabriel's step-back three-pointer with 4:51 left keyed a 9-1 run and sent the VMI Keydets to a win over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in non-conference basketball action Thursday night, Nov. 18, at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. Stan Okoye had his third consecutive doubledouble, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to pace VMI. Gabriel had 15 points for VMI, including eight over the final 5:26, and now sits just three points shy of 1,000 for his career. Keydets Go to 3-0, Beat UVA-Wise : Sophomore Stan Okoye registered his second double-double of the season with a career-high 28 points and 10 boards, while freshman Rodney Glasgow chipped in a career-high 23 points as the VMI Keydets defeated the UVA-Wise Cavaliers Tues., Nov. 16 at VMI's Cameron Hall. The win brings the Keydet mark to 3-0 to start a season for the first time since the season, and brings VMI head coach Duggar Baucom's career-record against non-division I opponents to VMI also earned its fifth consecutive 2-0 start at home, a streak dating back to The Keydets were helped by a stellar 34 for 38 effort at the charity stripe, including 19 of 20 (95%) in the second half. Six players were perfect from the foul line, including Okoye and Burks going 6 for 6 apiece. Finally, the Keydets continued their run of strong performances on the glass, outrebounding UVA-Wise Gabriel Leads VMI Over UMBC: Keith Gabriel had 30 points, Stan Okoye had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds and the VMI Keydets moved to 2-0 for the first time since the season, as they defeated the UMBC Retrievers in non-conference basketball action Sunday afternoon, Nov. 14 in Baltimore, Md. After a nip-and-tuck first half that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, UMBC took a two-point lead four minutes into the second half, thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play by Justin Fry, giving the home team a edge. Just 12 seconds later, Okoye answered with a three-point play of his own, sparking a 17-6 run and giving the Keydets the lead for good. Keydets Rout Randolph Behind Okoye and Glasgow: Rodney Glasgow had 17 points and eight assists in his collegiate debut, Stan Okoye had 26 points and behind a 67-point second half, the VMI Keydets defeated the Randolph College WildCats in VMI's basketball season opener, played Friday, Nov. 12 at Cameron Hall. The 41-point win was the Keydets' largest margin of victory since a 61-point triumph on Nov. 20, 2008, when VMI beat Stevenson In addition to Glasgow and Okoye, Stephen Sargent filled up the stat sheet with a career-high 15 points and nine rebounds, while Keith Gabriel had 17 points and Nick Gore chipped in 16. Kenon Named Preseason All-BSC: VMI s Austin Kenon was selected to this year s Preseason All-Big South team, as announced by the conference Oct. 12. Kenon earned Second-Team All-Big South honors in with a career-high 18.4 points per game, which ranked third in the Conference. He was the League's top free throw shooter at 84.2 percent and was second with 2.76 three-pointers per contest. Kenon also ranked among the Big South leaders in assists (fifth, 3.62) and steals (10th, 1.41). He scored 20 points in a game 12 times, including three 30-point contests that all came against League foes. In Conference games last season, he upped his averages to 19.4 points and 84.8 percent from the charity stripe. Kenon has made 256 three-pointers in his career and is one of two active Big South players with 1,000 career points (1,253). Glasgow and Covington Join VMI: After agreeing to join the Institute during last year s early signing period, Rodney Glasgow and D.J. Covington have started their Keydet careers. Glasgow has started each of the first two games, while Covington s in-game debut is on hold due to injury. Covington, a 6-8, 230 senior at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, Va. where he was coached by Eric Acra, averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks per game his junior season playing both the power forward and center positions. He was named First Team All-Tidewater Conference Independent Schools and was All-State honorable mention. Covington is a three-time All-TCIS selection and has been named All-Virginia Prep League three times. Covington was also a standout wide receiver for the Norfolk Academy football team and starred on the AAU BWSL Elite 17 A & B, 16 A, and 15 A basketball teams under Coach Boo Williams. Covington's brother, Charles Clark, is an All- American sprinter for the Florida State track team and ran for the USA national team at the World Championships in Berlin where he placed fifth in the 200-meter dash. Glasgow, a 5-10, 160, point guard from Good Counsel School in Olney, Md. and coached by Blair Mills, was a second team pick in the nationally renowned All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. As a senior, he averaged 15.6 points, six assists and two steals per game. Glasgow played AAU basketball with Mid-Atlantic Select and won the 2009 MVP Award for the Piggly Wiggly Tournament. Covington is majoring in psychology, while Glasgow has an economics and business major. C. Holmes Drafted by NBDL: Chavis Holmes 09, part of two Big South Championship finalist teams during his time at VMI, was selected by the Reno Bighorns in the fourth round of Monday, Nov. 1 s, NBA Development League (NBDL) draft. Holmes was a four-year starter at VMI and was an early, integral part of VMI head coach Duggar Baucom s uptempo system, as he led the NCAA in steals per game in (3.4). He also scored 22 points per game that season, leading the conference, and was an All-Big South First Team selection. Holmes sits fourth on VMI s all-time scoring chart with 2,065 points and, along with his brother Travis, formed the highest-scoring pair of twins in NCAA Division I history. Since leaving the Institute, Holmes spent the season playing in Spain, averaging 13.2 points per game for Caja Rioja. He also worked out with the Charlotte Bobcats in Holmes is the third former Keydet to enter the NBDL, joining his brother Travis and Reggie Williams 08, who now suits up for the NBA s Golden State Warriors.
