1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES VMI Begins Stretch Run With Coastal Carolina/Presbyterian Road Swing Keydets Look to Improve on 5-0 Big South Road Record This Season VMI Last Time Out: Thanks to the second-straight double-double by Chavis Holmes, including 33 points and 12 rebounds, VMI knocked off Charleston Southern, 82-76, on Monday night at Cameron Hall. Holmes 33 points were boosted by an 11-of-12 night from the free-throw line. Holmes first career double-double came Saturday against Gardner-Webb, and he followed it up Monday with his second such outing. Despite 16 first half points by Holmes, VMI trailed at intermission. The two teams traded baskets throughout the second half, before the Keydets closed the game on a 19-4 run over the last 7:11 to take a commanding lead and pull away for the eventual victory. It marked the Keydets fourth win this season when trailing at halftime. Last Meeting with Coastal Carolina: Behind career-high scoring from Chavis Holmes (35 pts.) and Austin Kenon (29 pts.), VMI survived a desperate Coastal Carolina rally, holding on for a thrilling win on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Cameron Hall. With the Keydets up by three and the seconds ticking away, Coastal Carolina s Mario Sisinni dribbled the ball up the court and found teammate Steven Sexton on the right wing, just beyond the three-point line. Sexton was met by a pair of VMI defenders, but thanks to a head fake, was able to get off the heave as time expired. The shot banked in, and a Chanticleer celebration ensued, as the visitors had seemingly tied the score. However, the officials ruled Sexton s shot to be a two-pointer, as the toe of his right foot was on the edge of the three-point line. After checking the replay, that ruling was upheld, giving VMI the triumph, and bringing a raucous cheer from the 2,875 fans in attendance. Last Meeting with Presbyterian: Behind five players in double figures, including a career-high 22 points from Willie Bell and a 20-point second half from Chavis Holmes, VMI defeated Presbyterian, 90-75, on Monday, Jan. 12 at Cameron Hall. The win was VMI s 10th-straight victory, and its 13th in 14 outings. This season marks the first time in school history that VMI has appeared on the CollegeInsider.com s Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. The Keydets are rated 12th in the most recent poll, down from their peak at 11th three weeks ago. (Full poll on page 3) In other rankings news, the Washington Post has ranked VMI third on their Atlantic 11 poll this week, comprised of Mid-Atlantic Division I schools. The Keydets have also received votes in the Associated Press Top 25 in four different polls, including last week s. A VMI win against Coastal Carolina would: Improve the Keydets record to 9-2 on the road this season, which would be the best-ever road start in VMI history. The win would also make VMI 6-0 on the road in conference this season, another accomplishment never achieved in program history. Coastal Carolina is 7-4 all-time against VMI, including a 4-1 mark at Kimbel Arena. VMI scored its first-ever win there last year, a decision on Jan. 14, A VMI sweep of Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian would: Improve the Keydets record to 10-2 on the road this season, which would be the best-ever road start in VMI history. The sweep would also make VMI 7-0 on the road in conference this season, another first-time achievement in program history. Each of these stats either set or tied season lows for VMI in , and when added together would seemingly add up to a tally in the loss column for the Keydets. However, VMI was able to overcome these statistics and put together a 19-4 run to end the game to score an win over Charleston Southern on Monday, Feb. 9 at Cameron Hall. The team was led by a second straight double-double by Chavis Holmes, who poured in 33 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. It marked the fewest three-pointers made in a win this season for VMI, as the Keydets shot exactly the same number (7-of-34) from beyond the arc as they did in an early-season, 95-67, loss at Jacksonville State. Keydets Snap Overtime Skid At Winthrop: Despite an unblemished mark in games decided by five points or less this season, the Keydets had not had very good luck in playing overtime games of late. After a loss in extra time at home against UNC Asheville on Feb. 2, VMI had lost their last three overtime games, dating back to last season. That skid was snapped in the team s next outing, as VMI rebounded with a win at Winthrop just two days after falling to UNCA. In the Winthrop game, the Keydets did not commit a turnover and shot 57% during the What They re Saying About VMI s Win At Kentucky Kentucky Head Coach Billy Gillispie: "They whipped us. They were more physical than us. They got all the loose balls. They hustled harder than we did. They rebounded in a timely fashion better than we did. They executed much better than we did. They had a great deal more leadership than we did." North Carolina Head Coach Roy Williams: "It was such a weird game, VMI would have beaten us also. I know it's an easy deal for me to say that, but we wouldn't have beaten VMI if they had come in here and played us like that. They were sensational." Washington Post Contributor John Feinstein: While upsets have become more common, VMI over Kentucky ranks pretty high on the all-time stunners list. One of the smallest schools in Division 1 with about 1,(4)00 students, VMI has a litany of military requirements even though its graduates are not required to do military service. The Keydets victory in Lexington, Ky. (as opposed to Lexington, Va., where VMI is located) will be remembered for years. When Kentucky looks back at low points in the history of its program, it will surely bring up November 14, When VMI considers highlights, the date will come up instantly.

One of the most impressive statistics from the game was that through 45 minutes while scoring 110 points, VMI committed only 10 turnovers, compared to 26 committed by Winthrop. Senior Chavis Holmes scored a game-high 26 points in the win, while freshman Michael Sparks contributed a career-best 23 points in the win. Winthrop, meanwhile, dropped its third straight contest despite holding a advantage in rebounds and shooting 61.6% from the field. Travis Dominant In Big South Conference: Senior Travis Holmes missed a five-game stretch in Big South play earlier this year, but has been making up for it since returning. Though not listed in the Big South stats due to missing so many games, Travis has averaged 22.3 points, 5.8 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 3.4 steals in the conference games he has played in. Those numbers include a career-best 37- point performance against UNC Asheville on Feb. 3, when he became the first player in Big South history with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists and 250 steals. Overall this season, Travis ranks second on the team with 19.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.4 steals and a 80.5% free-throw percentage while leading the team with 4.2 assists. Twenty-Four 3 s Bury Knights: Playing their final non-conference game of the season, the Keydets made it one to remember by knocking down 18 three-pointers in the first half alone en route to a victory against Southern Virginia. The Keydets made 24 three-pointers for the game, two beyond the previous school record. For those of you counting at home, the NCAA Division I record stands at 28, set by Troy against George Mason on Dec. 11, Both Chavis Holmes and Keith Gabriel knocked down six shots from distance, while Austin Kenon and Hunter Houston each contributed four. In all, seven different Keydets hit a three-pointer in the game. Travis Hits 1,500/500/250/250: With his career-best 37-point outburst against UNC Asheville on Feb. 2, VMI senior Travis Holmes became the first player in Big South history with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists and 250 steals in his career. Travis currently boasts 1,575 points, 520 rebounds, 318 assists and 282 steals in his prolific career. By hitting that milestone, Travis also became only the sixth Keydet with 1,500 points and 500 rebounds, while also becoming the ninth player in Big South history to reach those numbers. It marked the second-straight year that VMI had a player hit that milestone, after Reggie Williams did so last season. Holmes Move Into Top Spot Among Division I Twin Scorers: With a combined 47 points in a win over High Point on Saturday, Jan. 24, Chavis and Travis Holmes became the all-time leading scorers among twins at the Division I level. After a clarification from the NCAA, Johnny & Eddie O Brien, who have been considered the all-time leading scorers among twins at Division I, were deemed to have played at Seattle University for two seasons (1951 & 1952) during which the school participated at the NCAA College Division, the forerunner to modern day Division II. Therefore, the O Briens, who scored a combined 3,970 points during their three years at Seattle, in fact scored only 1,446 points while competing at the NCAA University Division (in 1953), the forerunner to modern day Division I. Epic Run Propels Keydets Back Into First Place: Coming off of their first loss in over a monthand-a-half, the Keydets got off to an atrocious start in a first-place battle at Radford on Jan. 21. At the first media timeout, the Highlanders, who were playing their first game at the revamped Dedmon Center, led Coming out of that stoppage, senior Travis Holmes, playing his first game after missing five straight, hit a pair of free throws to spoil the shutout. That sparked an epic run over the final 15-plus minutes of the first half, giving the Keydets a advantage at halftime. During the run, which included separate bursts of 11-0, 12-2 and 12-0, the Keydets shot 10-of-19 (52.6%) from beyond the arc and caused 12 turnovers, leading to a 22-2 advantage in points off turnovers. When all was said and done, VMI had improved to 3-9 all-time at the Dedmon Center and reclaimed sole possession of first place in the Big South standings. Coming Up Big In Crunch Time: With a 12-1 mark in games decided by less than 10 points this season, there s no doubt that VMI has been able to play with poise under pressure down the stretch. But no player has come up as big in crunch time as senior Chavis Holmes. During the last five minutes of regulation this year, Chavis not only leads the team in scoring (4.2 ppg) and field goal percentage (56%), but has accounted for over onethird of the team s free throws. To that end, Chavis has hit 90.7% (49-of-54) from the line during crunch time. In Big South Conference play, Chavis and his brother Travis have been nearly equally dominating. Travis averages 5.1 points while Chavis averages 4.5 of VMI s 13.5 points over the final five minutes of those games, combining to shoot 51% from the field and 83% from the line. Kenon Consistently On Target: It s no surprise that sophomore Austin Kenon ranks among the national leaders in 3-point shooting. But did you know that he has never played in a game when they didn t hit from beyond the arc? Kenon has now played in 40 career games, and already has 150 career three-balls (3.75 3pg), shooting 40.7% from distance. He currently ranks third in VMI history in three-point percentage in his career. In his first season at VMI, Keith Gabriel has hit a three-pointer in all but two games this season. He currently has 74 three-pointers (3.08 3pg) on 37.2% shooting. Turnovers Tell The Story: A key to the Keydets success this season has been the team s ability to win the turnover battle. The Keydets have not committed more turnovers than their opponents while forcing at least 15 miscues in each contest this season. Additionally, the Keydets have caused ten more turnovers than they have committed in nine games this season, coming in two wins over Winthrop, as well as victories against Kentucky, Stevenson, UNC Asheville, Campbell, Southern Wesleyan, Presbyterian, High Point and Southern Virginia and a loss to UNC Asheville. VMI is now 19-2 in when holding an edge in points off turnovers, and 1-2 when that stat has gone the way of VMI s opponents. Remarkably, in VMI s 11 Big South games this season, the Keydets have averaged only 11.8 turnovers per game while forcing 21.7 per outing. Keydets In The National Rankings: The Keydets are currently leading the nation in scoring (95.8), 3-pointers per game (13.4), steals (14.1) and turnovers forced (23.5), while ranking third in the nation in assists (18.2). Individually, the Keydets also boast two of the top three players nationally in steals per game, as Chavis (3.39) and Travis (3.37) rank second and third, respectively. Climbing The Charts: In their senior seasons, Chavis and Travis Holmes are moving up both the VMI and Big South charts in several categories. With 1,894 career points, Chavis Holmes currently ranks fourth in VMI s career scoring and sixth on the Big South s list. He currently tops the VMI charts in career three-pointers and ranks eighth in Big South history with 279, while his 277 career steals rank him second at VMI and second in the Big South behind his brother, Travis. Chavis also checks in eighth in career scoring average at VMI with 17.1 ppg. Travis, meanwhile, moved into the top 10 in VMI s career scoring with his 23 points against Radford on Jan. 21. His current total of 1,586 places him 18th in Big South history as well. Travis is also the VMI and Big South career leader in steals with 286 and needs 25 more to move into the NCAA s Top 25 in career takeaways. From distance, Travis ranks fifth at VMI in career threepointers with 165. A December to Remember: Entering the month of December, VMI was off to a strong start at 4-2, including the Keydets stunning, season-opening win at Kentucky. But what VMI accomplished in December was remarkable. High-Scoring Keydets Join Elite List: VMI topped the nation in scoring for the second straight year in with a 91.3 points per game average, becoming just the 11th team on record in NCAA history to lead the country in scoring in back-to-back years. Senior Travis Holmes became the ninth player in Big South Conference history with 1,500 points and 500 rebounds, surpassing the latter threshold with his four rebounds against High Point (Jan. 24). Senior Willie Bell has 446 career boards and could also top the 500-mark with a big output down the stretch. Keydets and Chants Go Down to the Wire: Behind career-high point outputs from Chavis Holmes (35 pts.) and Austin Kenon (29 pts.), VMI survived a desperate rally and held on for a thrilling win over Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Cameron Hall. With the Keydets up by three and the seconds ticking away, Coastal Carolina s Mario Sisinni dribbled the ball up the court and found teammate Steven Sexton on the right wing, just beyond the three-point line. Sexton was met by a pair of VMI defenders, but thanks to a head fake, was able to get off the heave as time expired. The shot banked in, and a Chanticleer celebration ensued, however, the officials ruled Sexton s shot to be a two-pointer, as the toe of his right foot was on the edge of the three-point line. After checking the replay, that ruling was upheld, giving VMI the triumph, and bringing a raucous cheer from the 2,875 fans in attendance. The effort marked the second-straight game in which Kenon had posted a career-high, as he had scored 26 points against Charleston Southern the previous Monday. All told, the Keydets hit 17 treys on the day and scored over 100 points for the first time since Dec. 13. Keith Gabriel had 19 points to aid in the winning effort, while fellow freshman Ron Burks grabbed eight rebounds. Coastal Carolina s Joseph Harris led the Chanticleers with 30 points, 16 rebounds and six assists in the loss. Sisinni had 20 points and nine assists for the Chanticleers as well, and the Chanticleers went down to defeat despite 58 points in the paint. He bettered that output against Southern Virginia (Jan. 29) with a career-best 20 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting. Houston, who a season ago averaged 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 19 games, sat out the first semester this season. As a freshman, Houston shot only 25.5% from three-point land, making 13 of his 51 attempts. VMI Rings In New Year In Style: Trailing by seven with just over three minutes remaining, senior Chavis Holmes put the Keydets on his back, scoring each of VMI s final 15 points during a 15-5 run to lead the Keydets to a win over Richmond on New Year s Eve. Holmes, who had scored eight points over the first 37 minutes of play, accounted for those 15 points by going 7- of-7 from the free throw line while going 3-of-3 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers. His second long ball of the stretch came with 11 seconds remaining, giving the Keydets a two-point advantage they would not relinquish. The win was VMI s second in three seasons over the Spiders and was the first win over UR in Lexington since Jan. 21, It marks the first time that VMI has ever had 10 wins before the dawn of the New Year. VMI Escapes Army With Low-Scoring Win: How bizarre was VMI s win at Army on Saturday, Dec. 21? * It was the fewest points that the Keydets had scored and still won the game under head coach Duggar Baucom. The previous low for a win under Baucom came, not surprisingly, at Army on Dec. 8, 2005 in a victory. The last time that VMI scored 62 or less points and won was back on Feb. 21, 2004, taking a decision against Liberty. * Army forced VMI into one of its worst halves of the season in the game s opening stanza, with the Keydets shooting only 4-of-22 (18.2%) and committing 13 turnovers. It was the fewest field goals that VMI had scored in a half in nearly five years, dating back to a loss to Coastal Carolina on Jan. 26, 2004 in the lowest-scoring game in Cameron Hall history. * After connecting on only 3-of-16 (18.8%) three-pointers in the first half, VMI made 10-of-19 (52.6%) from distance in the second half. VMI, meanwhile, made only five two-point field goals and 13 three-pointers in the contest. It s Raining Threes: Over a two-game stretch in late November, VMI hit their three-pointers at nearly a historic rate. The Keydets boasted identical shooting nights from distance in wins against Stevenson (133-72) and Campbell (97-92). The Keydets matched a facility record by an opponent with 14 three-pointers, including five by sophomore gunner Austin Kenon. Kentucky got a valiant effort from junior Jodie Meeks, who poured in a career-best 39 points in leading a massive second-half comeback. After holding a advantage at halftime, VMI extended the lead to 23 points on a three-pointer by freshman Keith Gabriel with 14:10 remaining. After the teams traded buckets to make it 85-62, Meeks led a run over the next ten minutes, giving

7 Kentucky their first lead of the game at with 4:52 remaining. It would be the Wildcats only lead of the night. Following Ramon Harris layup to give Kentucky the lead, the Keydets answered quickly with a jumper by senior Willie Bell, knotting the score at 97. Kenon then knocked in his fifth three-pointer of the night, a dagger from the right corner, to give VMI the lead for good. The win was VMI s first against an SEC program since defeating Tennessee in the NCAA East Regionals on March 13, It was the Keydets first victory in the series against Kentucky since 1922, when the Keydets scored a decision. Kentucky Game Redux: * The loss for Kentucky was only their 55th all-time at Rupp Arena in the 33 seasons of play there. Homecoming For Sparks: VMI freshman forward Michael Sparks began his collegiate basketball career where he ended his high school career - in Lexington, Kentucky. Sparks had five points and three rebounds in his collegiate debut, taking place at storied Rupp Arena. The Tates Creek HS product averaged 19.1 points and 8.5 rebounds his senior year at the Lexington, Ky. school, and became the school's all-time leading scorer surpassing new South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn. Sparks was also selected to play in the prestigious Kentucky- Indiana All-Star game last spring. He shot 80% from the free throw line last year as a senior. VMI Basketball Signs Two In Early Period: VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom has announced the signings of Joe Carr and Nick Gore to National Letters-of-Intent for the early signing period. Carr is a 6-2, 195 guard from The Woodlands (Texas) Christian Academy. Gore, a 6-7 forward who graduated from Waynesboro (Va.) High School last spring, is currently attending The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. Carr averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists per game as a junior last year and led TWCA to a 27-2 mark and its first ever state championship in basketball. He was named District Player of the Year in each of the past two seasons and also earned all-state honors in the same two years. "Joe Carr is a great fit for our program, we are really excited that he has chose to attend VMI," said Baucom. "Joe is a coach on the floor. He combines great size with innate leadership ability. He is the type of player that makes everyone around him better." Gore averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds last year at Waynesboro High and can play both the small and power forward positions. He was named All- District as Waynesboro advanced to the third round of the state playoffs last year. Baucom Rewarded With Contract Extension: Just before the season, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom received a contract extension through the season, Athletic Director Donny White announced. Baucom, who has injected a brand of fastpaced, high-scoring hoops that has brought the Keydets success and acclaim on and off the court, is in his fourth season as VMI head coach since taking over the program in April, Over the past two seasons, Baucom has led VMI to the NCAA scoring title in back-to-back seasons, a feat accomplished most recently by Arizona in and Under Baucom, the Keydets have also experienced their most prolific two-year winning period (28 victories) in over a decade and posted back-to-back 14-win seasons for the first time since I am extremely pleased with Coach Duggar Baucom s work at VMI, said White. He has built a very competitive program for us and I am confident that our basketball program will continue to excel under his leadership. Since transitioning to the up-tempo, high-flying system, the VMI record books have undergone a major facelift as 43 team, individual and facility records have been rewritten in the Baucom era.
