1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets to Face Mountaineers in Morgantown VMI s First Game in Morgantown Since Winter of VMI basketball is back on the court Wednesday, traveling to Morgantown, W. Va. to face the West Virginia Mountaineers. Tip time is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on both the Root Sports (Pittsburgh) television network and ESPN3 (available only in areas not covered by Root Sports). As always, a radio broadcast can be heard in the Lexington area on WZ and on while live stats will be linked on The Keydets come off a win over Elon Saturday at Cameron Hall, VMI s 27th straight home non-conference win. Stan Okoye led the way with one of his best collegiate games, posting 30 points and 16 rebounds, including 11 boards in the second half. The Big South Preseason Player of the Year also had four assists, three steals and two blocks as the Keydets outscored the Phoenix in the second half en route to the victory. With his stellar outing Saturday, Okoye moved into a tie for 10th on VMI s all-time scoring list (see page five). He also surpassed Charlie Schmaus, former VMI player and coach, for seventh on the Institute s all-time rebounding list. Next up on the scoring chart are Ramon (eighth) and Damon (ninth) Williams, whom Okoye would pass with 25 points against WVU, and Karl Klinar 54 on the rebounding listing, who is 35 boards ahead of Okoye. Also on a roll for the Keydets is D.J. Covington, the junior center. In fact, since shooting 1 for 8 in the first half against Central Penn (Nov. 13), Covington has hit 28 of 45 shots from the field, a 62.2 percent clip. He is also on a four-game double-figure scoring streak, just the second time in his career he has done that. Last Meeting with West Virginia (11/27/2010): Casey Mitchell had 25 points, Kevin Jones had 22 and the West Virginia Mountaineers broke open a close game over the final seven minutes, en route to an win over the VMI Keydets Saturday night, Nov. 27, 2010 in Charleston, W. Va. VMI suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 5-1 while West Virginia improved to 4-1. The Keydets were paced in scoring by junior guard Keith Gabriel and freshman point guard Rodney Glasgow who each scored 18 points while senior guard Austin Kenon added 10 points. The Resumption of History: This will be the 49th meeting between VMI and West Virginia, with only one of those having come since Both the Keydets and Mountaineers were longtime members of the Southern Conference, and thus, were frequent opponents during the 40 s, 50 s and 60 s. WVU holds a 43-5 edge in the all-time series. Covington Knighted?: Since going 1 for 8 in the first half on Nov. 13 against the Knights of Central Penn College, junior D.J. Covington has been on a tear. He has scored at least 20 points in three of the past four games, and in the fourth contest, Nov. 21 at Old Dominion, he posted a doubledouble to help the Keydets beat the Monarchs for the first time since Overall, since the aforementioned Nov. 13 first half, Covington is shooting 28 of 45 from the field, a 62.2% clip. Okoye One Point from 10th: As noted on page 1, Stan Okoye moved into a tie for 10th on VMI s all-time scoring list this past Saturday, equaling Will Bynum 77 with 1,606 points. With one more point, he will move into the top-10 outright, and will become one of only three players in Institute history to be in the top 10 in both categories, joining Ron Carter 78 and Reggie Williams 08, the only two Keydets to ever play in the NBA. Notable Facts from Stan Okoye vs. Elon: Stan Okoye had one of the best games of his collegiate career on Nov. 24 against Elon, propelling VMI to victory with 30 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks. Here are notable facts about Okoye s performance in that game: It was his second 30-plus point game this season (Army), doubling the number of games with at least 30 points he had entering the season (Okoye scored 30 points against Presbyterian his sophomore season). It was the second-most rebounds of his career, trailing only his career-high against Campbell last year. As of Nov. 26, it ranked in a tie for the 26th-most points scored in a Division I game this year, while the rebounding effort was tied for 15th. Okoye passed Radee Skipworth and tied Will Bynum on the career scoring list, while also moving into seventh on the all-time Institute rebounding chart, passing Charlie Schmaus. Glasgow on Run: D.J. Covington is not the only junior Keydet playing well as of late. Point guard Rodney Glasgow has scored in double figures in four straight games, a career first, and has at least three assists in all six games this year. Glasgow also ranks fifth in the Big South in assist/turnover ratio.

3 Baucom Nine Wins Away: Last season, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom became just the second coach in Keydet history to surpass the 100-win plateau, as he hit triple digits with the Feb. 18 win over William & Mary. With just nine more victories, Baucom will tie Bart Bellairs for the most wins ever at VMI with 116. Baucom Moving Up: VMI head coach Duggar Baucom not only won his 100th game at the Institute last season and closed on former coach Bart Bellairs for the school record (116), but he moved up the Big South charts as well. Baucom has logged 107 wins as a part of the Big South, tied for the eighth-most all-time. He is just one behind former Liberty coach Jeff Meyer for seventh, and eight behind Gary Edwards, former Charleston Southern head man, for sixth. Non-Conference Home Winning Streak: Stan Okoye notched 30 points and 16 rebounds, propelling the Keydets to a win over the Elon Phoenix in non-conference basketball action Saturday, Nov. 24 at Cameron Hall in Lexington. After a first half that saw the two teams notch 11 lead changes and four ties, the teams continued to go back and forth early in the second half. There were three ties and one lead change in the first 4:34 of the half, with the final tie being on a Lucas Troutman jumper for Elon at the 15:26 mark that tied the game at 54. Brian Brown scored the next time down the floor to start a 6-0 run that put VMI ahead for good, and although the Keydets led by no more than 10 throughout, the Phoenix could not pull even the rest of the way. Okoye's 30 points and 16 boards were both game highs, as 11 of the rebounds came in the second half to propel the Keydets (3-3) ahead of a scrappy, tough Elon (4-2) team. Non-Conference Home Winning Streak: The Keydets are on quite the roll in Cameron Hall, particularly in non-conference games. VMI has lost just one non-conference home game since the start of the season, a Dec. 1, 2007 loss to Army. Entering the Elon game, the Keydets have won 26 straight home non-conference games and 29 of their last 30. Keydets Down ODU, 76-71, Beat Monarchs For First Time Since 78: Stan Okoye had a game-high 22 points, D.J. Covington had a double-double to go along with his seven blocks and the VMI defense forced several key turnovers in the final three minutes as the Keydets defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs, 76-71, in basketball action Nov. 21 at the Constant Center in Norfolk, Va. The victory is VMI's first win over Old Dominion since Jan. 25, The seven blocks for Covington, two of which came after Glasgow's three-point play on ODU's final possession of the game, tied for the second-most in a game in VMI history. Lewis Preston had seven blocks against Marshall on Jan. 18, 1992, while Covington and Eric Mann are in the record books having each posted nine blocks in a VMI game. Covington's 13 points and 10 rebounds mark his second doubledouble on the young season, while Okoye cracked the 20-point mark for the second time this year. Keydets Announce Three Early Signees: On Nov. 20, VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom announced the signings of three recruits in the November early signing period. Joining the VMI basketball program for the season are QJ Peterson (G, 6-1, Hedgesville, WVa./Hedgesville H.S./Massanutten Military Prep), Trey Chapman (F, 6-7, Greensboro, NC, Wesleyan Christian Academy), and Craig Hinton, Jr. (F, 6-7, Kernersville, NC, East Forsyth H.S.). We are so excited to have QJ, Trey, and Craig join our VMI Basketball family," said Baucom. "All three have the character to be outstanding cadet-athletes and all understand the value of a VMI education. This is probably the most athletic class we have brought in during my eight years at the Institute." He averaged 21 points per game, six rebounds, and four assists per game at Hedgesville High School his senior year under coach Kelly Church. "QJ is a very athletic, scoring combo guard who can set people up but can also finish at the rim," says Baucom. "He has great range on his three-point shot and the extra year of prep school has really elevated his game." Chapman plays for one of the top 5 ranked private schools in North Carolina and is off to a great start in the new season averaging 18.5 points and seven rebounds through the first three games. Wesleyan Christian Academy is coached by Keith Gatlin. Baucom describes Chapman as "a big wing who can score in a variety of ways. He is a proficient 3 point shooter, but can also slash to the rim to make plays. His length and athleticism will help us with our defensive pressure." Hinton, Jr. averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds with two blocks per game his junior year for East Forsyth coached by Mike Muse. "Craig is very versatile and we see him playing multiple positions for us," says Baucom. "His athleticism allows him to play over the rim, but he also has the skill set to play on the perimeter and make 3 pointers." Keydets Fall to Virginia Tech, 95-80: A career night for junior center D.J. Covington was not enough as the VMI basketball team battled with nearby foe Virginia Tech, as the Hokies took the 130th meeting between the teams Thursday night, Nov. 15 in Blacksburg, Va. Covington finished with a career-high and game-high tying 23 points at Cassell Coliseum, hitting 10 of his 17 shots from the field. With his point total, Covington helped VMI post a 20- point scorer in each of the first four games on the young season. VMI Downs Central Penn in Home Opener: The VMI Keydets placed six players in double figures, led by 20 points apiece from D.J. Covington and Brian Brown, enabling them to cruise past the Central Penn College Knights, , in men's basketball action Tuesday night, Nov. 14 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. The game was VMI's home opener and marked the seventh straight year the Keydets had won their first game at Cameron Hall. Covington equaled career-highs with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Nick Gore had a double-double (16 pts., 13 rebs.). With the triumph, the Keydets (1-2) have now won 26 consecutive non-conference games at Cameron Hall, with the last setback in that streak being on Dec. 1, 2007, a loss to Army. The Black Knights controlled most of the second half, stretching their lead to double figures on several occasions until a hard Army foul on Keydet (0-2) guard Joe Carr, which came with just under six minutes to go, seemed to fire up VMI. Okoye hit a three on VMI's next possession, reducing the lead to three, and then scored again on the ensuing try to make it a game. Army responded with a threepointer by Josh Herbeck, and on VMI s next trip, the Keydets misfired on multiple shot attempts despite no less than three offensive rebounds by freshman Phillip Anglade, and when Army was finally able to snare a loose ball, Mo Williams converted a three-point play off a breakaway layup, pushing the margin to and the Keydets could get no closer than five the rest of the way. Keydets Drop Season Opener to The Citadel, 84-76: Mike Groselle had 21 points and 15 rebounds and The Citadel Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the floor, helping them defeat the VMI Keydets, 84-76, in game two of the All-Military Classic tournament Saturday, Nov. 10 at McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C. Brian Brown led all scorers with a careerhigh 22 points, while D.J. Covington added 15 points and nine rebounds. Okoye Preseason Player of the Year: Senior Stan Okoye was voted Big South Preseason Player of the Year prior to the start of this season. He is, in fact, the first Keydet to be named the conference preseason POTY since VMI joined the conference for the season, and is the first VMI hoops standout to earn any Preseason Player of the Year honor from a conference since , when Jason Conley was tabbed with that honor by the Southern Conference. 6 casts of all games, home and away, are available free of charge at and Keydets Add Four Freshmen: VMI has added four freshmen to its roster this year in Dorian Albritton, Phillip Anglade, Gavin Stephenson and Tim Marshall. Albritton (Bronx, N.Y/Davidson Day School) was VMI s lone early signee, and averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game his senior season. His high school teammate, Anglade (Long Island, N.Y./Davidson Day School), went for 13 PPG and 11.9 RPG, while Stephenson (Columbia, Md./Atholton) scored 23 points per game and holds seven school records at his high school. Longtime VMI assistant Jason Allison was promoted to Associate Coach - Recruiting Coordinator, and Ryan Mattocks was hired as the team s newest assistant. Mattocks' (Duke 11) primary duties include assisting the staff with practice and game preparation, scouting, recruiting, and player development. Mattocks also coordinates team travel and oversees study hall during the academic year. Allison begins his eighth season on Baucom's VMI staff and has spearheaded the Keydet basketball recruiting efforts over that time.
