1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets Travel to Columbus For Date With Buckeyes VMI Takes On Ohio State For Second Consecutive Season VMI claimed their first win against their Interstate 81-rival James Madison in over 19 seasons with a victory on Wednesday evening at Cameron Hall. The win snapped a eight-game losing streak in the series by the Keydets, as it marked the first win over the Dukes since Feb. 11, 1988, a victory in the last visit to Cameron Hall by JMU. The Keydets enter Sunday s matchup against Ohio State at 2-2 for the second straight season. A season after leading the nation in points (100.9), assists (20.6), steals (14.8) and three-pointers (13.4) per game, the Keydets currently lead the nation in points with Duquesne ranks second in the nation entering Thursday s play at points per contest, as only two schools average at least 100 points per night nationally. Senior forward Reggie Williams, who has been selected as one of 50 preseason nominees for the John Wooden Award, currently ranks fifth in the nation in scoring with 27.3 points per contest. Williams, who was also voted to the Big South Conference s Preseason All-Conference team, not only led the nation in scoring a year ago, but also ranked in the top four in the Big South in rebounding (4th), FG% (3rd), and assists (3rd). Williams established new Big South and VMI records for points in a season and is on track to become the all-time leading scorer in Big South history, supplanting Liberty s Larry Blair, who overtook the record last season. The Keydets boast the return of three of their top four scorers from a season ago, including senior forward Reggie Williams, who led the nation in scoring at 28.1 points per game, and junior guard Travis Holmes, who led the country with 3.4 steals per outing. In all, the Keydets return four starters and seven letterwinners, while welcoming six freshmen into the fray. The Keydets made a stunning run to the Big South Championship Finals last season with upset wins over thirdseeded Liberty and second-seeded High Point. The sixth-seeded Keydets then came up three points short of topseeded Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. in the Final, televised on ESPN. This season, the Keydets enter the year with their highest preseason ranking in over 30 years, coming in third in the Big South s Preseason Poll. High Point (216 pts.) edged out Winthrop (214) by two points in the voting, while the Keydets (147) were voted ahead of Coastal Carolina (134), UNC Asheville, Liberty, Charleston Southern and Radford. A VMI win against Ohio State would: Improve the Keydets to 3-2 through their first five games for the second straight season. Mark VMI s first ever win against Ohio State. The teams met for the first time last season, with the Buckeyes scoring a season-opening win in the First Round of the BCA Classic. In that game, VMI trailed by only eight (51-43) at halftime, but the Buckeyes responded with a strong second-half effort for the victory. In that contest, Fred Robinson's career-high 16 points were tied with junior Reggie Williams for the game-high for the Keydets, as Williams also chipped in with 11 rebounds for the game's only double-double. Matt Murrer posted 15 points to round out the double-digit scoring for VMI. Despite their two teams only meeting once before, the head coaches of Sunday night s matchup are no strangers. Thad Matta and Duggar Baucom first opposed each other in , when Matta was an assistant at Western Carolina and Baucom was an assistant at Davidson. That season, Davidson won the North Division of the Southern Conference while also claiming a win against Western in the regular season, while Western won the SoCon South Division. The two teams met in the SoCon Final, where Western Carolina cut down Davidson s 19- game winning streak to secure the NCAA bid and send a 25-4 Davidson team that went 14-0 in the SoCon to the NITs. Keydets Break The Streak Against JMU: With a win against JMU on Nov. 21, the Keydets claimed their first win in over 19 seasons against the Dukes, snapping an eight-game skid in the series. Senior Reggie Williams collected VMI s first doubledouble of the season, scoring 30 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, as he also had a season-high seven assists in his 17th career double-double outing. Other double-digit outings for the Keydets included 18 points from junior Travis Holmes and 11 from freshman Christian Hunter. VMI led, 77-67, following a Travis Holmes layup with 5:26 remaining, but the Dukes answered with a 14-4 run over the next three minutes to pull even on a pair of free throws by Abdulai Jalloh to even the score at at the 2:27 mark. The Keydets outscored JMU, 9-2, the rest of the way and took the lead for good on seven consecutive points including six straight by Williams to start the run. A Williams layup with 1:57 left followed by two free throws and a dunk from the senior pushed the Keydets lead to and Travis Holmes converted one of two free throws seconds later to cap the run. James Madison hit just one of five shots from the floor over the last 2:27 of regulation, and a Kyle Swanston jumper at the :20 mark to cut the deficit to was as close as the Dukes would come down the stretch. The win gave VMI its first win over a CAA team since defeating Towson on Dec. 21, 2005, The Keydets also improved to 6-1 against JMU at home. Taking It To The House-ton: Against West Virginia Wesleyan, freshman Hunter Houston enjoyed a breakout performance, producing the highest point total by a Keydet freshman this season with his 16-point outing. Fourteen of his 16 points came in a record-breaking first half for the Keydets, when they set a new school mark with 84 points. Houston also set career-bests with three rebounds, four assists, three steals, two three-pointers, seven field goals,

3 one blocked shot and 20 minutes played. Reggie Rain: Senior forward Reggie Williams equalled his own school mark for field goals made in a game against West Virginia Wesleyan, converting on 18 of his 27 attempts on his way to a 38-point performance. Williams tied the mark that he established nearly a year to the day previous, when he scored a school-record 45 points thanks to his 18 field goals against Virginia Intermont on Nov. 15, Let s Get It Started: When the Keydets took on Northern Colorado to start the season at the Air Force Classic, it marked the earliest start in the VMI s 99- year history. VMI opened up play on Nov. 9 this season, a day ahead of when they started last season, on Nov. 10 against Ohio State. Rocky Mountain Lows: Playing for the first time ever in Colorado, the Keydets lost both contests that they played at the Air Force Classic. Against Northern Colorado in the opener, VMI allowed the Bears to shoot 68.0% from the field, the third-highest total since Coach Duggar Baucom began running his uptempo style of play in the beginning of last season. Against Dartmouth the next night, VMI shot only 19.2% (5-for-26) from beyond the arc. That was the fewest three-pointers and the worst threepoint percentage by the Keydets since the beginning of last season also. Reggie Williams Redux: Last season, Reggie Williams took the world of College Basketball by storm, topping the national scoring charts on his way to several recognitions. This season, he was honored with numerous preseason honors, including VMI s first ever nomination for the John R. Wooden Award, college basketball s most prestigious honor. After leading the country with a 28.1 pointsper-game average, Williams was not only named to the Big South s All-Conference First Team, but also received recognition from the NABC, who tabbed the forward to their District 4 Second Team. A season ago, Williams became the first VMI player to lead the nation in scoring since Jason Conley became the first freshman in NCAA history to lead Division I in scoring with a 29.3 average during the season. Williams now sits 3rd on the school's scoring list with 1,970 points. In the Big South recordbook, Williams currently sits 4th in career points, needing 242 points to surpass Larry Blair s Big South-record total of 2,211 career points. In 91 career contests, Williams has averaged 21.6 points per outing, eclipsing the 20-point mark 46 times while topping 30 points 19 times. He is the only Keydet to post multiple 40-point games, as he did so four times in He is also the only player in Big South history to have as many as three 40-plus point games in his career. Keydets Picked Third In Big South Poll: VMI s strong finish in the Big South Tournament last year remained a vivid memory for many of the conference basketball community, as the Keydets were picked third in the Conference s men s basketball preseason poll. It s the highest a VMI basketball team has been picked in a conference preseason poll in over 30 years. The Keydets received 147 points in the preseason poll for third place behind High Point which was edged Winthrop for the top spot with 216 points and 15 first place votes and Winthrop's 214 points and 14 first place votes. It is a reversal from a season ago, when the Keydets were picked last in the Conference s Preseason Poll. Baucom Rewarded With Contract Extension: Late in the offseason, VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom agreed to a contract extension to coach Keydet Basketball through the 2011 season. Baucom enters his third season as VMI head basketball coach this season after having been named to the post on April 14, His original four-year contract ran through the 2009 season. The new deal includes a salary raise and other benefits. I am extremely happy that Duggar Baucom has accepted our offer for a contact extension, said VMI Athletic Director Donny White. Under his leadership, our team has made great strides and I feel that he can make us a consistent winner. In , Baucom led his second-year team to a banner season and national acclaim. Using an up-tempo system for the season, the Keydets, picked to finish last in the preseason poll, won their most games (14) in nine years and advanced to the championship game of the Big South Tournament. The Keydets also set new NCAA season marks in three-pointers, both made and attempted (442 of 1383), 3-pointers made per game (13.4), 3-pointers attempted per game (41.9) and total steals (490). Fresh Faces Everywhere: This season, the Keydets boast six freshmen on their roster, joining with seven returning players. The total marks the most freshmen on a VMI Basketball team since the campaign, when seven freshmen suited up for the Keydets. Single-Season Turnaround: After winning only seven games in , the Keydets doubled that total by winning 14 a year ago. The seven-win swing is the largest single-season turnaround since the Keydets won 18 games in after winning only ten the year before. In the 99-year history of VMI basketball, the team has generated a larger turnaround only three times. The team averaged points on 81.7 shots, collecting 20.6 assists and 14.8 steals per outing. From beyond the arc, the Keydets averaged 41.9 attempts per game, hitting on 13.4 of those. A year previous, VMI averaged 71.3 points for the year, 14.2 assists, 7.3 steals, and averaged 57.4 shots per game. 1,500/500 Club: With his six rebounds against Radford on Jan. 25, Reggie Williams became the sixth player in Big South history with 1,500 points and 500 rebounds. Williams also became the 28th player in League history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, and he is the 40th member of the Big South s 500-rebound club. Dynamic Duo: Averaging a combined 47.3 points per game, VMI s Reggie Williams & Chavis Holmes were far and away the nation s top-scoring duo. But they also made some other history as well. Williams (28.1 ppg) and Holmes (19.2) overtook the VMI record for most points by a set of teammates, surpassing Charlie Schmaus (25.9) & Robin Porter (20.6), who combined to average 46.5 points per game in the campaign. High Velocity: With its high-flying tempo, VMI led the nation in scoring with a points-per-game average. In their 33 games, the Keydets surpassed the century mark in scoring 17 times, and twice came up just short by scoring 99. In the ten years prior, VMI had eclipsed the 100-point plateau in a game seven times. No Sophomore Slump Here: As head coach Duggar Baucom wrapped up his second season in Lexington, he become the fourth consecutive VMI coach to improve his first-year win total in his sophomore campaign in Lexington. Marty Fletcher saw a six-win improvement in the season, while Joe Cantafio s season in was a two-win improvement over the year before. Baucom s predecessor, Bart Bellairs, engineered an impressive season in in his sophomore campaign, representing an eightwin improvement from his first season, en route to a semifinal showing in the Southern Conference tournament.
