1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets to Battle George Washington on Saturday First Keydet/Colonial Meeting since 1975 VMI basketball is back in action Saturday, December 22, taking on the George Washington Colonials at the Smith Center in Washington, D.C. Tip time is set for 3 p.m., and the game can be heard on WREL.com, VMIKeydets.com and, in the Lexington area, on WZ. A video stream and live stats will also be available, and can be accessed through GWSports.com. VMI (4-6) at George Washington (4-6) Saturday, Dec p.m. ET This will mark VMI s first game in two weeks, as the Keydets have been off for exams since their loss to Wright State on Dec. 8. VMI led 16-6 early on, but was outscored over the remainder of the first half, as WSU seized control and went on to victory. Smith Center Washington, D.C. History Renewed Once Again: Much like the early-season games against Elon and West Virginia, there is an element of renewed history in the Dec. 22 matchup against George Washington. The Keydets have not faced the Colonials since 1975, the year before VMI made its historic run to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. History Renewed Once Again - Part Two: The Keydets will also be renewing history within our nation s capital. The Keydets have played in Washington, D.C. only once under head coach Duggar Baucom, losing to Howard on Nov. 25, According to records available, the Keydets have played in Washington only twice since 1975 (both losses to Howard) and VMI s last win in D.C. came on Jan. 3, 1966, a rout of these George Washington Colonials, Long Layoff: VMI has not played since falling to Wright State on Dec. 8 in Dayton, Ohio. The 14-day layoff is the longest time between regular season games under current head coach Duggar Baucom, with the previous long having been 12 days (Dec , 2010). It is also the longest layoff for the program since the season. That year, VMI defeated Bluefield at Cameron Hall on Dec. 13, but was next in action at New Orleans on Dec. 28, a span of 15 days. Keydets Struggle Against Wright State: The Wright State Raiders shot 62.1 percent from the field in the second half and held a edge in points in the paint for the game, enabling them to defeat the VMI Keydets, 92-59, Dec. 8 in Dayton, Ohio. Wright State took the lead for good with a 15-0 first half run, but used hot shooting from the field in the second half to break open a 10-point halftime lead, as the Raiders outscored the Keydets over the final 20 minutes. 28 of those 54 points came in the paint as the home team exploded to secure the victory in the first meeting between the programs. The other story of the game was defense, as WSU s defense held VMI to its lowest point total of the season and lowest since Feb. 27, 2012 against Radford, while also breaking Keydet star Stan Okoye s double figure scoring streak at nine games. 3 Okoye s Chart-Climbing Update: Over the past several games, Stan Okoye has passed several notable names on the Keydet career charts. His latest victims were Ramon and Damon Williams 90, whom he passed in the Dec. 1 loss to Morgan State to move into eighth on the alltime Keydet scoring list. He also surpassed Karl Klinar 54 for seventh on VMI s all-time rebounding chart in the Dec. 3 loss to Wright State. The senior is one of only three Keydets to rank in the top 10 of both categories, joining Reggie Williams 08 and Ron Carter 78. Baucom Eight Wins Away: Last season, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom became just the second coach in Keydet history to surpass the 100-win plateau, as he hit triple digits with the Feb. 18 win over William & Mary. With just eight more victories, Baucom will tie Bart Bellairs for the most wins ever at VMI with 116. Baucom Moving Up: VMI head coach Duggar Baucom not only won his 100th game at the Institute last season and closed on former coach Bart Bellairs for the school record (116), but he moved up the Big South charts as well. Baucom has logged 108 wins as a part of the Big South, tied for the seventh-most all-time. He is just seven behind Gary Edwards, former Charleston Southern head man, for sixth. Keydets Rewrite Season Highs in Win: As seen on page 14, the Keydets rewrote their seasonal high efforts in the Dec. 3 win over Virginia University of Lynchburg. Keydet players set or tied 18 different individual seasonal high marks in the win, led by D.J. Covington s 26 points. The Keydets also had a season-high 20 steals, the team s most since Dec. 8 of 2011 (21 vs. Central Penn). Balanced Scoring Leads Keydets in Rout of VUL: 12 different Keydets found the scoreboard, led by D.J. Covington's career night, to lead VMI to a rout of the Virginia University of Lynchburg Dragons Dec. 3 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. Covington notched a careerhigh 26 points and shot a strong 10 of 11 from the floor. That accounted for a 90.9 field goal percentage, the third-best single-game effort in VMI (4-5) history, among players with at least 10 attempts. The other story of the night was the Keydet defense, which had a season-high 20 steals, led by four each from Gavin Stephenson and Nick Gore, and also forced a season-best 31 turnovers in the victory. Non-Conference Home Winning Streak Ended by Morgan State: Going into the December 1 Morgan State game, VMI had won 27 straight non-conference home games and 30 of their last 31. That streak ended with the buzzer-beater loss to MSU. VMI had not lost a non-conference home game since facing Army on Dec. 1, Overtime Buzzer-Beater Sinks Keydets Against Morgan State: A full court pass with two seconds remaining in overtime led to an Ian Chiles game-winning layup, giving the Morgan State Bears an win over the VMI Keydets in nonconference basketball action Dec. 1 at Cameron Hall. After the Keydets (3-5) had scored the final five points of regulation to tie the game, VMI pulled ahead by as many as four in overtime, going up with three minutes remaining. Morgan State (3-3) went 4 of 6 at the foul line over the next 2:22, however, and that made it an contest with just 38 seconds on the clock. Rodney Glasgow missed a 10-foot leaner late in the shot clock, and after a timeout, Thair Heath found Chiles with the full court pass and the 7'2" center converted a left-handed lay-in over two Keydets as the clock ran out, giving the visitors the dramatic victory. The Keydets were led by Stan Okoye, who had 29 points and 11 rebounds, while Brian Brown added 17 points of his own. That game can be seen on both the Flames Sports Network and ESPN3. The schedule then resumes with Jan. 19 s game at Coastal Carolina being on ESPNU, while that network also shows VMI/UNC Asheville from Lexington on Feb. 8. MASN broadcasts VMI at Campbell on Feb. 16, with VMI at Liberty (Flames Sports Network/MASN) on Feb. 26 wrapping up the broadcast schedule. Earlier games shown included Virginia Tech (ESPN3) and West Virginia (Root Sports - Pittsburgh/ESPN3). Covington had 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the VMI Keydets, but the West Virginia Mountaineers put seven players in double figures and had 60 points in the paint, leading to a WVU win Nov. 28. Okoye Named BSC Player of the Week: VMI's Stan Okoye was named Big South Choice Hotels Player of the Week, according to information released by the conference Monday, Nov. 26. Okoye averaged 26.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in leading the Keydets to two wins during the week. He opened his week with 22 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists in VMI s road win at Old Dominion. Against Elon on Saturday, he tallied 30 points and 16 rebounds in leading VMI to the nine-point victory. Keydets Down Elon: Stan Okoye notched 30 points and 16 rebounds, propelling the Keydets to a win over the Elon Phoenix in non-conference basketball action Saturday, Nov. 24 at Cameron Hall in Lexington. After a first half that saw the two teams notch 11 lead changes and four ties, the teams continued to go back and forth early in the second half. There were three ties and one lead change in the first 4:34 of the half, with the final tie being on a Lucas Troutman jumper for Elon at the 15:26 mark that tied the game at 54. Brian Brown scored the next time down the floor to start a 6-0 run that put VMI ahead for good. Notable Facts from Stan Okoye vs. Elon: Stan Okoye had one of the best games of his collegiate career on Nov. 24 against Elon, propelling VMI to victory with 30 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks. Here are notable facts about Okoye s performance in that game: It was his second 30-plus point game this season (Army), doubling the number of games with at least 30 points he had entering the season (Okoye scored 30 points against Presbyterian his sophomore season). It was the second-most rebounds of his career, trailing only his career-high against Campbell last year. Okoye passed Radee Skipworth and tied Will Bynum on the career scoring list, while also moving into seventh on the all-time Institute rebounding chart, passing Charlie Schmaus. Keydets Down ODU, 76-71, Beat Monarchs For First Time Since 78: Stan Okoye had a game-high 22 points, D.J. Covington had a double-double to go along with his seven blocks and the VMI defense forced several key turnovers in the final three minutes as the Keydets defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs, 76-71, in basketball action Nov. 21 at the Constant Center in Norfolk, Va. The victory is VMI's first win over Old Dominion since Jan. 25, The seven blocks for Covington, two of which came after Glasgow's three-point play on ODU's final possession of the game, tied for the second-most in a game in VMI history. Lewis Preston had seven blocks against Marshall on Jan. 18, 1992, while Covington and Eric Mann are in the record books having each posted nine blocks in a VMI game. Keydets Announce Three Early Signees: On Nov. 20, VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom announced the signings of three recruits in the November early signing period.

He averaged 21 points per game, six rebounds, and four assists per game at Hedgesville High School his senior year under coach Kelly Church. Chapman plays for one of the top 5 ranked private schools in North Carolina and is off to a great start in the new season averaging 18.5 points and seven rebounds through the first three games. Wesleyan Christian Academy is coached by Keith Gatlin. Hinton, Jr. averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds with two blocks per game his junior year for East Forsyth coached by Mike Muse. Keydets Fall to Virginia Tech, 95-80: A career night for junior center D.J. Covington was not enough as the VMI basketball team battled with nearby foe Virginia Tech, as the Hokies took the 130th meeting between the teams Thursday night, Nov. 15 in Blacksburg, Va. Covington finished with a career-high and game-high tying 23 points at Cassell Coliseum, hitting 10 of his 17 shots from the field. With his point total, Covington helped VMI post a 20- point scorer in each of the first four games on the young season. VMI Downs Central Penn in Home Opener: The VMI Keydets placed six players in double figures, led by 20 points apiece from D.J. Covington and Brian Brown, enabling them to cruise past the Central Penn College Knights, , in men's basketball action Tuesday night, Nov. 14 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. The game was VMI's home opener and marked the seventh straight year the Keydets had won their first game at Cameron Hall. With the triumph, the Keydets (1-2) have now won 26 consecutive non-conference games at Cameron Hall, with the last setback in that streak being on Dec. 1, 2007, a loss to Army. 6 VMI Falls to Army, 80-74: The VMI Keydets had cut a double-digit deficit down to just one with under five minutes to go, thanks to five straight points by Stan Okoye, but the Army Black Knights answered with a 6-0 run and went on to defeat the Keydets, 80-74, in the third-place game of the All-Military Classic, contested Nov. 11 in Charleston, S.C. Keydets Drop Season Opener to The Citadel, 84-76: Mike Groselle had 21 points and 15 rebounds and The Citadel Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the floor, helping them defeat the VMI Keydets, 84-76, in game two of the All-Military Classic tournament Saturday, Nov. 10 at McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C. Brian Brown led all scorers with a careerhigh 22 points, while D.J. Covington added 15 points and nine rebounds. Okoye Preseason Player of the Year: Senior Stan Okoye was voted Big South Preseason Player of the Year prior to the start of this season. Longtime VMI assistant Jason Allison was promoted to Associate Coach - Recruiting Coordinator, and Ryan Mattocks was hired as the team s newest assistant. Mattocks' (Duke 11) primary duties include assisting the staff with practice and game preparation, scouting, recruiting, and player development. Mattocks also coordinates team travel and oversees study hall during the academic year. Allison begins his eighth season on Baucom's VMI staff and has spearheaded the Keydet basketball recruiting efforts over that time.
