2012-13 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets to Face Old Dominion Wednesday in Norfolk VMI and ODU to Do Battle for 25th Time on the Hardwood VMI basketball will return to action Wednesday, traveling to Norfolk, Va. to face the Old Dominion Monarchs. Game time is set for 7 p.m. An audio broadcast of the game will be available locally on 96.7 3WZ, as well as www.wrel.com and www.vmikeydets.com. A video stream (for a small fee) and live stats of the contest can be accessed through ODUSports.com, with direct links available at VMIKeydets.com. The Keydets (1-3) fell to Virginia Tech in their last matchup, dropping a 95-80 decision in Blacksburg. D.J. Covington had a career-high 23 points, but all five Hokie starters scored in double figures as VMI dropped to 1-3 on the young season. This will be the 25th meeting between these schools on the court, with ODU holding a 20-4 edge in a series that dates back to December of 1967. It is the first time the teams have played in back to back seasons since the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 campaigns, when the Monarchs won two games decided by nine and eight points respectively. VMI basketball announced three early signees this week. Joining the VMI basketball program for the 2013-14 season are QJ Peterson (G, 6-1, Hedgesville, WVa./Hedgesville H.S./Massanutten Military Prep), Trey Chapman (F, 6-7, Greensboro, NC, Wesleyan Christian Academy), and Craig Hinton, Jr. (F, 6-7, Kernersville, NC, East Forsyth H.S.). With six points on Wednesday night, VMI forward Stan Okoye would pass John Krovic 78 for 12th on the alltime VMI scoring list. Last Meeting with Old Dominion (12/22/2011): The Old Dominion Monarchs pulled away late, overcoming a career-high tying 34 points from VMI's Keith Gabriel to eake out an 81-73 win Thursday night, Dec. 22, 2011 in Norfolk, Va. VMI, coming off a 10-day layoff for exams, fell to 5-7 on the year heading into the holiday break. Old Dominion snapped a three-game skid to pull its season overall mark to 6-6. A VMI win against Old Dominion would: Be VMI s first win over Old Dominion since Jan. 25, 1978. Move the Keydets to 2-3 on the season. Okoye Looking for Dual Top-10 s, Could Move Up Wednesday: Stan Okoye currently sits in a unique spot on the VMI record charts, ranking high on the VMI career charts in both points (13th) and rebounds (8th). Okoye is just six points shy of passing John Krovic 78 for 12th on the all-time Keydet scoring list. Should Okoye get into the top 10 in VMI career scoring, a mark he is 66 points from, he would become one of only three players to be in the top 10 in both categories, joining Ron Carter 78 and Reggie Williams 08, the only two Keydets to ever play in the NBA. Baucom 11 Wins Away: Last season, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom became just the second coach in Keydet history to surpass the 100-win plateau, as he hit triple digits with the Feb. 18 win over William & Mary. With just 11 more victories, Baucom will tie Bart Bellairs for the most wins ever at VMI with 116. Baucom Moving Up: VMI head coach Duggar Baucom not only won his 100th game at the Institute last season and closed on former coach Bart Bellairs for the school record (116), but he moved up the Big South charts as well. Baucom has logged 105 wins as a part of the Big South, the ninthmost all-time. He is three from tying Randy Peele, former head coach at UNC Greensboro and Winthrop, for eighth on that list. Keydets Announce Three Early Signees: On Nov. 20, VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom announced the signings of three recruits in the November early signing period. Joining the VMI basketball program for the 2013-14 season are QJ Peterson (G, 6-1, Hedgesville, WVa./Hedgesville H.S./Massanutten Military Prep), Trey Chapman (F, 6-7, Greensboro, NC, Wesleyan Christian Academy), and Craig Hinton, Jr. (F, 6-7, Kernersville, NC, East Forsyth H.S.). We are so excited to have QJ, Trey, and Craig join our VMI Basketball family," said Baucom. "All three have the character to be outstanding cadet-athletes and all understand the value of a VMI education. This is probably the most athletic class we have brought in during my eight years at the Institute." Peterson currently plays for the Massanutten Military Academy Prep team coached by Chad Myers. He aver-

aged 21 points per game, six rebounds, and four assists per game at Hedgesville High School his senior year under coach Kelly Church. "QJ is a very athletic, scoring combo guard who can set people up but can also finish at the rim," says Baucom. "He has great range on his three-point shot and the extra year of prep school has really elevated his game." Chapman plays for one of the top 5 ranked private schools in North Carolina and is off to a great start in the new season averaging 18.5 points and seven rebounds through the first three games. Wesleyan Christian Academy is coached by Keith Gatlin. Baucom describes Chapman as "a big wing who can score in a variety of ways. He is a proficient 3 point shooter, but can also slash to the rim to make plays. His length and athleticism will help us with our defensive pressure." Hinton, Jr. averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds with two blocks per game his junior year for East Forsyth coached by Mike Muse. "Craig is very versatile and we see him playing multiple positions for us," says Baucom. "His athleticism allows him to play over the rim, but he also has the skill set to play on the perimeter and make 3 pointers." Keydets Fall to Virginia Tech, 95-80: A career night for junior center D.J. Covington was not enough as the VMI basketball team battled with nearby foe Virginia Tech, as the Hokies took the 130th meeting between the teams 95-80 Thursday night, Nov. 15 in Blacksburg, Va. Covington finished with a career-high and game-high tying 23 points at Cassell Coliseum, hitting 10 of his 17 shots from the field. With his point total, Covington helped VMI post a 20-point scorer in each of the first four games on the young season. Covington was joined in double figures by teammates Rodney Glasgow and Stan Okoye, each of whom put up 13. Okoye was the Keydets leading rebounder, pulling down seven boards. VMI Downs Central Penn in Home Opener: The VMI Keydets placed six players in double figures, led by 20 points apiece from D.J. Covington and Brian Brown, enabling them to cruise past the Central Penn College Knights, 116-81, in men's basketball action Tuesday night, Nov. 14 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. The game was VMI's home opener and marked the seventh straight year the Keydets had won their first game at Cameron Hall. Covington equaled career-highs with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Nick Gore had a double-double (16 pts., 13 rebs.) and tied a career-high in rebounds. With the triumph, the Keydets (1-2) have now won 29 consecutive non-conference games at Cameron Hall, with the last setback in that streak being on Dec. 1, 2007, a 71-69 loss to Army. Finally, freshman Gavin Stephenson finished with seven steals, the most by a Keydet since Ron Burks also had seven on Nov. 30, 2009. VMI Falls to Army, 80-74: The VMI Keydets had cut a double-digit deficit down to just one with under five minutes to go, thanks to five straight points by Stan Okoye, but the Army Black Knights answered with a 6-0 run and went on to defeat the Keydets, 80-74, in the third-place game of the All-Military Classic, contested Nov. 11 in Charleston, S.C. The Black Knights controlled most of the second half, stretching their lead to double figures on several occasions until a hard Army foul on Keydet (0-2) guard Joe Carr, which came with just under six minutes to go, seemed to fire up VMI. Okoye hit a three on VMI's next possession, reducing the lead to three, and then scored again on the ensuing try to make it a 69-68 game. Army responded with a threepointer by Josh Herbeck, and on VMI s next trip, the Keydets misfired on multiple shot attempts despite no less than three offensive rebounds by freshman Phillip Anglade, and when Army was finally able to snare a loose ball, Mo Williams converted a three-point play off a breakaway layup, pushing the margin to 75-68 and the Keydets could get no closer than five the rest of the way. Brian Brown led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, while D.J. Covington added 15 points and nine rebounds. Okoye Preseason Player of the Year: Senior Stan Okoye was voted Big South Preseason Player of the Year prior to the start of this season. He is, in fact, the first Keydet to be named the conference preseason POTY since VMI joined the conference for the 2003-04 season, and is the first VMI hoops standout to earn any Preseason Player of the Year honor from a conference since 2002-03, when Jason Conley was tabbed with that honor by the Southern Conference. Keydets to be Broadcast Seven Times on TV: VMI basketball can be seen on various networks seven times this season, beginning with Nov. 15 s Virginia Tech game in Blacksburg which will be shown on ESPN3. West Virginia (Root Sports-Pittsburgh) on Nov. 28, Jan. 9 against Liberty at Cameron Hall (Flames Sports Network) and Jan. 19 at Coastal Carolina (ESPNU) wiil follow, with ESPNU also showing UNC Asheville at VMI on Feb. 8. Keydets Add Four Freshmen: VMI has added four freshmen to its roster this year in Dorian Albritton, Phillip Anglade, Gavin Stephenson and Tim Marshall. Albritton (Bronx, N.Y/Davidson Day School) was VMI s lone early signee, and averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game his senior season. His high school teammate, Anglade (Long Island, N.Y./Davidson Day School), went for 13 PPG and 11.9 RPG, while Stephenson (Columbia, Md./Atholton) scored 23 points per game and holds seven school records at his high school. Marshall (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown), meanwhile, averaged just under 15 points per game and was First Team All-Beach District. Coaching Staff Changes: This summer, VMI made a pair of coaching staff changes, adding one coach and promoting another. Longtime VMI assistant Jason Allison was promoted to Associate Coach - Recruiting Coordinator, and Ryan Mattocks was hired as the team s newest assistant. Mattocks' (Duke 11) primary duties include assisting the staff with practice and game preparation, scouting, recruiting, and player development.
