2010-11 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets Travel to Liberty for Crucial Conference Game VMI Puts 4-0 BSC Road Record On the Line Against League s Second-Place Team VMI basketball continues its three-game road trip Thursday, as the Keydets make the short trek across the Blue Ridge Mountains to take on the Liberty Flames. Game time is set for 7 p.m., and the contest will be available on a variety of outlets. Live audio and stats will be available on VMIKeydets.com, and the radio broadcast can be heard on Lexington s own 96.7 3WZ. The video portion can be seen on the Big South Network, the Flames Sports Network and ESPN3.com, as well as on MASN via a tape delay broadcast (start time of 9 p.m.). For the second time this season, VMI comes off an 2-0 road swing after an 0-2 homestand. The Keydets routed Radford on Jan. 13, winning by 34 at the Dedmon Center, and then pulled away from High Point with a late 13-0 run two nights later, leading to a 97-91 win and a 4-0 mark in conference away from Cameron Hall. The Keydets put six players in double figures against Radford, only the third time this season VMI had done so, while Austin Kenon scored 33 points to key the victory over High Point. For his exploits, Kenon was named the Big South Choice Hotels Player of the Week. The senior earned his second such award this year, as he averaged 26.5 points and shot 64.3% from 3-point range in two games last week. Kenon went 9- for-14 beyond the arc and shot over 60% from the field over that span. His 33 points against High Point were a seasonhigh for the Big South, and he dropped in five treys while hitting 12 consecutive free throws before missing his final attempt of the night. Kenon is also pursuing several VMI historical marks as he begins to wrap up his final collegiate season. He currently sits 59 points from surpassing John Krovic for 10th on the Keydet all-time scoring list, and Saturday against High Point, he overtook Chavis Holmes for the most three-pointers ever attempted at the Institute. Kenon is five treys behind Holmes for the school s all-time three-pointers made record, and currently ranks sixth in Big South history with 301 makes from beyond the arc (see page 3). Last Meeting with Liberty (1/28/10): Liberty outrebounded VMI 53-25 and scored 66 points in the paint en route to a 91-73 win over the Keydets Thursday night, Jan. 28, 2010. Point guard Jesse Sanders had a double-double for Liberty, while Keith Gabriel led VMI with 24 points. A VMI win against Liberty would: Move VMI to 5-0 in Big South road games for the second time in three seasons. In 2008-09, the Keydets did not lose a conference road game until Feb. 14. Put the Keydets over.500 in League play for the first time since the end of the 2008-09 season. Not only are the Keydets bidding for a 5-0 start away from Cameron Hall, but several statistical categories have been drastically different home versus away. Field goal percentage is one of those categories, as the Keydets have shot 50.2% from the floor in road conference games, while hitting just 39.8% in Cameron Hall. The difference remains significant with three-point percentage, as the away effort stands at an impressive 43.9%, while the home is a low 27.6%. Finally, rebounding continues to be key, as VMI owns a +0.3 lead per game on the road, but in Lexington, is outrebounded by 14.7 boards per contest. Game Over Early?: So far this season, those attending VMI basketball have seen the contests decided early, one way or another. The Keydets are 10-1 when leading at the half, with their only loss coming to Winthrop in the Big South opener Dec. 2. VMI, however, is just 1-6 when trailing at the intermission, having only rallied against Jacksonville State on Nov. 18. If you prefer to look later on in the game for a key moment, the Keydets are 11-1 when leading with five minutes left, but have yet to rally when trailing at that point (0-6). Again, the culprit here was Winthrop, as VMI led 66-62 with five minutes to go on Dec. 2. Other Statistical Notes: This year s VMI team has several clear-cut statistical differences. As noted on page 4, the Keydets are 9-0 when outshooting their opponent this season, but have just one win when they do not hold an edge from the floor. Also, the team is undefeated (9-0) when scoring at least 90 points and is 7-0 when holding the opposition to 80 points or less. Kenon Named Big South Player of the Week: VMI senior Austin Kenon was named the Big South Choice Hotels Men's Basketball Player of the Week, for games played Jan. 10-16. Kenon bounced back from a scoring slump to average 26.5 points in two Big South road wins last week, helping the Keydets move to.500 in the Conference standings. He opened the week with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 4-of-5 from three-point range in a win at Radford. Kenon then scored a Big South season-high 33 points in the Keydets six-point win at High Point. He made five treys while hitting 12 consecutive free throws before missing his final attempt of the night. For the week, Kenon was 14-of-23 from the field ( =60.9 percent), 9-of-14 from three-point range ( =64.3) and 16-of-

He also averaged 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.5 assists. Kenon Moving Up: As noted on page one, senior Austin Kenon is moving up in several career statistical categories. After struggling on the last homestand, he rebounded with a vengence during the Radford/High Point road trip. In addition to being named the Big South Player of the Week, he became just the sixth player in League history to surpass the 300 three-pointers made plateau. He is one of only two active players to hit that mark, joining Jamarco Warren of Charleston Southern, who also hit his 300th on Saturday (Warren surpassed the mark first due to CSU s earlier tip time). Kenon has now attempted the most threepointers in Keydet history, surpassing Chavis Holmes 09. He could pass Holmes for threepointers made Thursday night, as he needs just six to do so. In addition, Kenon has moved to 11th on the Keydet all-time scoring list, and sits 59 points out of 10th, while the senior is also sixth in VMI free-throw percentage at 80.4%. Drive For Five: VMI is bidding to lead the nation in scoring for the fifth straight year, and currently paces Division I at 92.7 points per game, nearly five PPG more than second-place Lamar. VMI is the only team to accomplish the feat over four consecutive seasons, and this year, the Keydets also lead the country in three-point field goals per game, averaging 11.1 made per contest. Other National Notes: In addition to three-pointers and overall scoring, stats the Keydets have dominated nationally over the past several seasons, VMI is also near the top in other categories as well. The team ranks third in steals, averaging 10.3 per contest, and is 21st in turnover margin, holding a +4.0 mark. Okoye Ranked by Rivals: Stan Okoye continues to impress in his sophomore season, as he has led the Big South in scoring for the much of the season. Okoye is currently averaging 19.3 points per game, and he also ranks third in rebounding at 9.1 per contest. This past week, Okoye was recognized for his efforts this season, as he was tabbed the 25th-best small forward in the country in Rivals.com s weekly positional rankings. The sophomore averaged a double-double last season, managing 17.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. Movin Up The Charts VMI 1,000-Point Club 1. The Jan. 15 win over High Point was Baucom s 80th at VMI, moving him past Joe Cantafio s 79 wins at the Institute. The current VMI head man now trails only Bart Bellairs, who had 116 wins as the Keydet skipper. Covington Impressive in Starting Role: Freshman center D.J. Covington has continued to play strongly since moving in the starting lineup four games ago. In two starts last week, Covington averaged 11.0 points and 6.5 rebounds and hit eight of 13 from the field while blocking eight shots. Covington registered five blocks in the win at Radford. Rebounding = Winning?: VMI has shown drastic improvement in rebounding this season, including opening the year by outrebounding three consecutive opponents for the first time in the Duggar Baucom era. The Keydets are currently at a -2.8 rebound margin for the season but are a startling 7-0 when they hold the edge on the glass. The Keydet rebounding efforts have been led by Stan Okoye, who has averaged 9.1 rebounds per contest, the third-highest mark in the Big South. Block Party: The Keydets have amassed an impressive total of blocked shots already this season, and may assail last year s program record performance. All told this season, VMI has posted 92 blocks, nearly reaching the program s #5 performance, a 105-block effort in 2008-09, and giving them a chance to better their 144-block performance from last season. The Keydets currently lead the conference in blocks per game (5.1) and rank 35th nationally in that category. On the Road: After opening the season with eight home games in the first month, the Keydets will finally return home on Thursday, Jan. 27 to take on Gardner-Webb. That will mark the start of five home games in seven contests, as the Cameron Hall schedule wraps up Feb. 15 against Liberty. Kenon s 33 Points, Late Run Lead VMI to Win at High Point: Austin Kenon had a season-high 33 points, VMI pulled away with a late 13-0 run and the Keydets captured their fourth straight Big South win on the road, defeating the High Point Panthers 97-91 Saturday night in High Point, N.C. With the win, VMI moves to 11-7 on the year and 4-4 in Big South play, including a Big South Conference Preseason Poll 1. Coastal Carolina (10).....206 2. Winthrop (5)...........191 3. The win also moved VMI head coach Duggar Baucom into second place on the Institute's all-time wins list, with 80 victories at the helm of the Keydets. The Keydets blocked eight shots on the night including three by freshman D.J. Covington and dropped in 14 of 29 three-point hoists, giving them 29 treys over the last two games. VMI also converted 27-of-35 from the line including a stellar display by Kenon, who drained his first 12 attempts before missing his final free throw try of the night. Keydets Rout Radford, 105-71: Senior guard Austin Kenon scored 20 points and led six Keydets into double figures scoring nights as VMI topped Radford, 105-71, Thursday night, Jan. 13 at the Dedmon Center. VMI snapped a two-game skid and moved to a perfect 3-0 in road conference games. The Keydets also ended a four-game losing streak to the Highlanders. VMI shot 53.6% for the game including a 62.5% clip from the floor in the first half. The Keydets hit 15 of 30 three-point attempts for the contest and came within one trey of equaling the Dedmon Center mark for most 3-pointers in a game. The Keydets' 105 points at Radford was the fifth time this year VMI has gone over the century mark scoring in games this year and the second against a Division I foe. Scouting Liberty: The Flames have had their best start to a Big South season, jumping out to a 7-1 mark. The team s only loss came Jan. 8 to Coastal Carolina, when an Evan Gordon three-pointer at the buzzer fell just short, and so did Liberty, 70-67. The Flames are known for their defense, as they lead the Big South in fewest points allowed (63.0 per game). On The Horizon: On the horizon for the Keydets is a return to Cameron Hall on Jan. 27, as VMI is set to play Gardner- Webb. GWU currently sits at 1-6 in the conference, having lost leading scorer Jon Moore to injury early in the season, and the Runnin Bulldogs are fighting for the #8 seed in the Big South Tournament. Quartet of TV Games Announced: VMI will have a quartet of TV games this season, including Thursday s game with Liberty. Not only will that contest be picked up by the Flames Television Network, but it will be shown via tape delay on MASN (9 p.m.) and will be available on ESPN3.com. The Liberty game at Cameron Hall (2/15) will also be shown on Flames Television, while MASN is scheduled to broadcast the Keydets regular season finale, a Feb. 26 date with Winthrop. Earlier in the year, the VMI/West Virginia game (11/27) was shown on MASN. Odd is Even Better: VMI will be looking to continue an odd trend, quite literally, in 2010-11. Each of the last two seasons ending in odd years, 2006-07 and 2008-09, have seen VMI advance to the title game of the Big South Championship. Meanwhile, the even numbered years have concluded with first round losses. Keydets Earning Votes: The Keydets have earned several votes in national polls this season, as the team had 11 points in the Dec. 13 CollegeInsider.com Mid- Major Top 25 Poll. That was not a season-high for the team, as they were tabbed for 24 markers in the Nov. 29 version. Meanwhile, in the Nov. 22 Associated Press Top 25 Poll, the Keydets received a single vote, putting them on the other receiving votes listing. Gabriel Goes Over 1,000: The number 34 is famous in the sporting world, as it is associated with such legendary figures as Nolan Ryan, Walter Payton and Hakeem Olajuwon. Keith Gabriel added that number to his basketball resume

For the week, Glasgow was 8-of-16 from the floor ( =50.0 percent), 4-of-10 from three-point range ( =40.0) and 5-of-6 from the free throw line ( =83.3). This is Glasgow's second Freshman of the Week honor this season, as he also earned the award on Dec. 6. VMI Sweeps Big South Weekly Awards: VMI senior guard Austin Kenon was named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men s Basketball Player of the Week, while teammate D.J. Covington was named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for games played Dec. 6-12. Kenon averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds in two games last week. He opened with 17 points, five helpers and 6-of-6 from the free throw line at VCU. Kenon then scored 26 points on 8-of-15 field goals including seven three-pointers, while handing out five assists and grabbing four rebounds in a win over Longwood. For the week, Kenon was 12-of-26 from the field ( =46.2), 10-of-20 from three-point range ( =50.0) and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe ( =90.0). Covington averaged 14.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in VMI s two games last week. He just missed his first career double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds at VCU, in addition to four blocked shots and 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. Against Longwood on Saturday, Covington scored a career-high 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and had a block in the victory over the Lancers. For the week, Covington was 12-of-16 from the floor ( =75.0) and 4-of-6 from the line ( =66.7). Perfect Versus Non-Division I Schools: After defeating Southern Virginia Nov. 23, the Keydets are 23-0 against non-division I schools under head coach Duggar Baucom. VMI will not play another non-division I game this season. Keydets Rout Longwood, 114-82: Stan Okoye had his sixth double-double of 2010-11, Austin Kenon had a game-high 26 points and the VMI Keydets routed the Longwood Lancers 114-82 in non-conference basketball action Saturday afternoon (Dec.11) at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. Okoye notched his double-double with four minutes left in the opening half, and concluded the contest with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Kenon had seven three-pointers, one short of his career high, and D.J. Covington had a career-high 16 points to help VMI (7-4) win its third straight game over the Lancers (3-7). It was the biggest Division I win at home for VMI since Jan. 13, 2007, when the Keydets beat Charleston Southern 116-83. Glasgow Named Big South Freshman of the Week: VMI guard Rodney Glasgow (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named The Crons Brand Big South Basketball Freshman of the Week for games
played Nov. 29-Dec. 5. Glasgow averaged 13.7 points, 7.0 assists, 3.7 steals and 3.7 rebounds in three games last week. He recorded a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 11 assists last Monday vs. Central Penn College, a performance that ranked in VMI's all-time top-10 efforts in assists. Glasgow followed that with 17 points, six rebounds and six steals in an overtime loss to Winthrop. Glasgow completed his week with eight points and six rebounds against Presbyterian College. He also recorded a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio in the three-game span. W. Va. VMI had cut the deficit to 64-60 with seven-plus minutes left, thanks to a 13-5 run, but West Virginia closed the game with an 18-6 spurt to seal the win. Meeting Final Four School: Nov. 27 s game with the West Virginia Mountaineers marked VMI s first opponent who advanced to the Final Four the previous year since 2007-08, when the Keydets faced the Ohio State Buckeyes. VCU Survives Late VMI Push, 86-80: VMI chopped a 13-point VCU lead to one, 76-75, with 4:26 left, but the Rams went on to score the next six points and hold on for the win, 86-80, in non-conference basketball action Wednesday night, Dec. 8 in Richmond, Va. In only the second meeting between the in-state rivals, VCU improved its overall record to 6-2 while the Keydets fell to 6-4. VMI was led in scoring by senior guard Austin Kenon and junior guard Keith Gabriel who each tallied 17 points while freshman forward D.J. Covington hit five-of-six shots from the floor and scored 12 points while grabbing nine rebounds and blocking four shots. VMI Drops Conference Opener: After VMI's Keith Gabriel sent the game to overtime with two late free throws, the Winthrop Eagles scored the first six points of the extra frame and went on to defeat the VMI Keydets 88-82 in the Big South opener for both teams Thursday night, Dec. 2 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. With Winthrop up by one with 33 seconds to go, WU's Reggie Middleton hit a pair of free throws to put the visitors up three, 73-70. Austin Kenon converted a lay-up at the other end, and after Middleton split a pair of tries for the Eagles, Gabriel was fouled going to the basket. With 4.8 seconds showing on the clock, Gabriel drilled the two foul shots to tie the contest. Middleton had a desperation try for the Eagles at the buzzer, but it hit the backboard, the left inside portion of the rim and then bounced out to send the contest to extra time. It was the first overtime game at Cameron Hall since Feb. 2, 2009. In the five minute overtime frame, Winthrop (4-3, 1-0) scored the first six points to take an 80-74 advantage. Rodney Glasgow hit a three-pointer for VMI to cut it to three, and VMI got back within two when Michael Sparks split a pair from the charity stripe with 1:52 left. The Keydets got a steal on the following possession, but turned the ball over and would not be able to cut it to a one possession game again. Scoring Barrage Leads Keydets to Win, 151-92: Seven different Keydet players had at least 16 points, VMI notched the second-most points in school history and the Keydets routed the Central Penn College Knights 151-92 Monday night, Nov. 27 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. The 151-point output was just five points shy of the largest scoring efforts in program history, a pair of 156-point efforts in 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively. It was the team's largest margin of victory and most points scored overall since Nov. 20, 2008, when the Keydets bested Stevenson by 61 markers. It was also the first time VMI had seven players in double figure scoring since that contest with Stevenson. The home team was helped by 21 threepointers, the first game VMI had with 20-plus treys since January of 2009, and an effort that tied the 14th-most three-pointers made in NCAA Division I history. Finally, a school-record 85-point second half put the game away, although Central Penn held just two leads all night, 2-0 and 2-1. WVU Hands Hoops Team First Loss: Casey Mitchell had 25 points, Kevin Jones had 22 and the West Virginia Mountaineers broke open a close game over the final seven minutes, en route to an 82-66 win over the VMI Keydets Saturday night, Nov. 27 in Charleston, Covington, Gabriel Lead Keydets to First 5-0 Start Since 1920 s: Freshman D.J. Covington had 13 points and tied a school record with nine blocks, while Keith Gabriel went over the 1,000 career point plateau and the VMI Keydets went to 5-0 for the first time in the modern era by defeating the Southern Virginia Knights 94-78 Tuesday night at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. VMI's 5-0 start is the program's best in the modern era, as the Keydets had not accomplished that feat since the 1921-22 season. Covington's nine blocks tied Eric Mann's nine rejections against The Citadel on Jan. 15, 2000. Covington also had nine points and nine rebounds, missing a triple-double by just one of each statistic. Gabriel started the contest 0 for 5, but finally hit the needed three-pointer at the 8:47 mark, becoming the 34th player in Keydet history, and second active VMI player, to surpass the 1,000-point plateau. Keydets Knock off Jacksonville St., 65-55: Keith Gabriel's step-back three-pointer with 4:51 left keyed a 9-1 run and sent the VMI Keydets to a 65-55 win over the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in non-conference basketball action Thursday night, Nov. 18, at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va. Stan Okoye had his third consecutive double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to pace VMI. Gabriel had 15 points for VMI, including eight over the final 5:26, and now sits just three points shy of 1,000 for his career. Keydets Go to 3-0, Beat UVA-Wise 120-88: Sophomore Stan Okoye registered his second double-double of the season with a career-high 28 points and 10 boards, while freshman Rodney Glasgow chipped in a career-high 23 points as the VMI Keydets defeated the UVA-Wise Cavaliers 120-88 Tues., Nov. 16 at VMI's Cameron Hall. VMI also earned its fifth consecutive 2-0 start at home, a streak dating back to 2005-06. The Keydets were helped by a stellar 34 for 38 effort at the charity stripe, including 19 of 20 (95%) in the second half. Six players were perfect from the foul line, including Okoye and Burks going 6 for 6 apiece. Finally, the Keydets continued their run of strong performances on the glass, outrebounding UVA-Wise 49-39. Gabriel Leads VMI Over UMBC: Keith Gabriel had 30 points, Stan Okoye had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds and the VMI Keydets moved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2004-05 season, as they defeated the UMBC Retrievers 94-77 in non-conference basketball action Sunday afternoon, Nov. 14 in Baltimore, Md. After a nip-and-tuck first half that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, UMBC took a two-point lead four minutes into the second half, thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play by Justin Fry, giving the home team a 45-43 edge. Just 12 seconds later, Okoye answered with a three-point play of his own, sparking a 17-6 run and giving the Keydets the lead for good. Keydets Rout Randolph Behind Okoye and Glasgow:
Rodney Glasgow had 17 points and eight assists in his collegiate debut, Stan Okoye had 26 points and behind a 67-point second half, the VMI Keydets defeated the Randolph College WildCats 106-65 in VMI's basketball season opener, played Friday, Nov. 12 at Cameron Hall. The 41-point win was the Keydets' largest margin of victory since a 61-point triumph on Nov. 20, 2008, when VMI beat Stevenson 133-72. In addition to Glasgow and Okoye, Stephen Sargent filled up the stat sheet with a career-high 15 points and nine rebounds, while Keith Gabriel had 17 points and Nick Gore chipped in 16. VMI Announces Basketball Signees: Virginia Military Institute head basketball coach Duggar Baucom announced the signings of Brian Brown (Kings Mountain, N.C./Kings Mountain H.S.) and Quinton Upshur (Norfolk, Va./Booker T. Washington H.S.) to national letters-of-intent to attend VMI and play basketball for the Keydets. "We are so excited to have Quinton Upshur and Brian Brown and their families join our VMI Basketball program, "said Baucom. "Both men bring a high level of character to our basketball family and will do very well in the classroom, in the Corps and on the basketball court. My staff has done an exceptional job again bringing in quality cadet-athletes to the Institute." Brown, a 5'11, 180 combo guard, averaged 19.7 points per game as a junior with 6.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. He shot 53 percent from the field in 2009-10, including 36 percent from 3-point range. "Brian can really score, "said Baucom. "He is a very good three-point shooter but has the explosiveness to get in the lane and finish at the rim. Brian's versatility allows him to play both the point and off the ball as a shooting guard." Upshur is a 6-5, 190 forward who plays the wing position and averaged 14.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists as a junior. He is also a standout on the Booker T. Washington volleyball team. Q is very long and is a great athlete," says Baucom. "He will be very disruptive in our full court pressure defense but can also score in a variety of ways. He is an excellent rebounder from the wing position." leaders in assists (fifth, 3.62) and steals (10th, 1.41). He scored 20 points in a game 12 times, including three 30-point contests that all came against League foes. In Conference games last season, he upped his averages to 19.4 points and 84.8 percent from the charity stripe. C. Holmes Drafted by NBDL: Chavis Holmes 09, part of two Big South Championship finalist teams during his time at VMI, was selected by the Reno Bighorns in the fourth round of Monday, Nov. 1 s, NBA Development League (NBDL) draft. Holmes was a four-year starter at VMI and was an early, integral part of VMI head coach Duggar Baucom s uptempo system, as he led the NCAA in steals per game in 2008-09 (3.4). He also scored 22 points per game that season, leading the conference, and was an All-Big South First Team selection. Holmes sits fourth on VMI s all-time scoring chart with 2,065 points and, along with his brother Travis, formed the highest-scoring pair of twins in NCAA Division I history. Since leaving the Institute, Holmes spent the 2009-10 season playing in Spain, averaging 13.2 points per game for Caja Rioja. He also worked out with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2009. Holmes is the third former Keydet to enter the NBDL, joining his brother Travis and Reggie Williams 08, who now suits up for the NBA s Golden State Warriors. Kenon Named Preseason All-BSC: VMI s Austin Kenon was selected to this year s Preseason All-Big South team, as announced by the conference Oct. 12. Kenon earned Second-Team All-Big South honors in 2009-10 with a career-high 18.4 points per game, which ranked third in the Conference. He was the League's top free throw shooter at 84.2 percent and was second with 2.76 threepointers per contest. Kenon also ranked among the Big South
