Show me London Produktion: Marathon Productions och Canal J, Frankrike Svensk distribution: Filmo, 2000 Inledning London är huvudstad i Storbritannien. Själva storstadsområdet delas in i 32 själv-styrande stadsdelar, vilka styrs av fullmäktige. 1

SCRIPT: I LOVE MY CITY: LONDON My name is Electra and I live in London. My parents call me Grew. I live in the West Side of the city, not too far from downtown. There are lots of little cottages in this neighbourhood... I m seven years old, and I get along pretty well for my age. Mum often lets me go do errands all by myself. I m very careful and I never talk to strangers. When I m older I m going to be a karate champion. This morning I m going to a funny place I ve been told about. A store that only sells things especially for lefthanders. They say there are only two like it in the world. The English are famous for having offbeat and original stores... I can t believe it! There really are crazy things here - like a clock that works backward. You know, a left-handed clock! And I haven t seen anything yet! Inside there are notebooks which open backwards, school supplies for lefties, and even special garden tools. You probably think I m left-handed well, I m not! But my pen pal who lives in New York is, and he wanted to know whether I could find him a left-handed boomerang... Incredible! They have it! Impossible isn t a word we use very much in the English language. Boy, is my friend ever going to be happy! Whenever I pass a policeman I can t help but stop and ask him something, like what time it is. I know exactly what time it is, but they re so polite that it s nice to talk to them. Now I have to pick out a birthday present for my cousin Conner. He lives in Scotland and what s better to buy for a Scot than a kilt? And I know the best shop for kilts in London: Westaway and Westaway. It s a very old store and I m sure they ll have just what I m looking for. The salesman suggests a kilt! The fact is I would love to buy all of them! But I can just imagine what Mother would say! I ve got to hurry! Otherwise Mother will wonder where I am. Since I m a good little girl, I give Mother a call to let her know that everything s all right. These big phone booths with the Queen s coat of arms are really pretty. Too bad there are less and less of them. Traditions are being lost, that s what my dad says. On my way home, I walk by the Parliament Building. It s one of the most beautiful monuments in the city... Today is a wonderful day because Mother doesn t have to work and I don t have to go to school! We ve decided to go shopping together. I love London, it s the shopping capital of the world! We stayed an hour at Piccadilly Circus trying to decide what to do. We each had to make some concessions. Obviously, we don t want to go to the same places. But we ve found a few compromises. 3
This is Buckingham Palace! But the flag on the roof is lowered. That means that the Queen is not in London right now. No problem though, we didn t exactly come to visit her! We head up the Mall, which is a super avenue facing the Palace. Mother says that it s the last place in London where they still use gas lamps. Just like a century ago! Our first stop, is a monumental antique shop. Mum loves it here. It s in an old church and I must admit, you do find some crazy things. In general, the bigger it is, the more Mum wants to buy it. It always makes me laugh because I can t imagine how these big things would ever fit in our little house. We ll just have to knock down the walls. I adore this place. I can t believe that everything you see is for sale. It seems to me that you d be better off living in Buckingham Palace if you wanted to store all of this! Next door is the famous Covent Garden. It s a walking mall where you can find one of my favorite shops, the Tintin shop. I love Tintin! My Dad read me all the books when I was only three! So I really feel at home here. Mum says that Tintin is Belgian. I didn t know that, I thought he was French. My favourite character is Snowy. Or Milou, like they say in French! He s gotten Tintin out of trouble more than once. Not bad for a fox-terrier. Now that s an English dog! Neil s Yard is the smallest square in London. And one of the prettiest too! It s the perfect place to take a lunch break. It seems like everyone is always in a good mood here! I take a minute to look at what I ve bought postcards for my girlfriends and for Dad, who s working in Pakistan right now. We start the afternoon by heading down to the Camden Town flea market. It s located on the edge of a pretty canal. That s one of the reasons why I like it better than all the other flea markets. There are lots of typically English things here. One of my favourite places is the hat shop. Mother and I love trying on hats and we always end up laughing hysterically! Now we re heading towards Trafalgar Square. There s always something to see here. I m sure Admiral Nelson never gets bored up on top of his pillar. Today there are guys doing acrobatic tricks on bicycles. I m impressed. I can t even ride straight yet! I could spend hours watching them, they re so good... Trafalgar Square is the meeting place for pigeons. They re really greedy. They always make me think of the scene in Mary Poppins where the old lady feeds the pigeons. But I m a little too afraid of them to let them crawl up my arms. Luckily, I met a nice man who taught me how to get the pigeons to climb on me. It felt funny. But I have to say, I wasn t really comfortable about it. 4
A dream I ve had for a long time has finally come true. Today I crawled up in between the paws of the stone lion who guards the square. Before I was too little and Mother was afraid to help me climb up it. But today I did it fine on my own. I feel safe up here. I d love to do the same thing with a real lion, but I don t know whether Mom would like it... The Tower Bridge is the most famous bridge in London. It s really impressive. Sometimes it opens up so thats boats can go through. And from here, you ve got a great view of the Thames River. The Tower of London gives me the creeps. That s where they tortured people. It makes me shiver just to think of it. Mother knows almost everything about the city. I can never get over it. She should get a job as a tour guide! To finish up the day, we head to one of the many parks in London. Our favourite is Green Park. It s not very big, but as its name suggests, it s the greenest. The park is filled with squirrels. They ve sure got a good life. Today, for the first time, I almost caught one. I had to be really patient, but at the last minute I moved a little too much, and off he went. I don t care. I ll have better luck next time. Like I did with the pigeons! What s great in our parks is that you can rent lounge chairs by the hour. That s typically English. We got here just in time, they re starting to pick up the chairs. Well, it is already six o clock. But our feet are completely exhausted. We really need to lie down just for a few minutes. Well, it s back to real life today. Mom has to go back to work and I have to go to school. Since both of us don t start until ten o clock we have time to take a London taxi. Inside, the driver is separated from us by a window. That way, we could even fight if we wanted to and it wouldn t bother the driver!! I think these cabs are very beautiful, they remind me of big beetles... We head to King s Road, one of the most famous streets in London. Mother says that when she was young, there used to be lots of punks here. You know, they are the ones who wear lots of black, and dye their hair all sorts of different colours. There are still a couple, but it s not really in fashion anymore. I think they look pretty funny. Our last shopping stop is Angelic s. It s a store where they only sell candles. I think it s pretty original. There are big ones, little ones, perfumed ones, everything you can imagine. Since there ll be a birthday party at my friend Lita s next week, I ll get a bunch to decorate with. I ll get the prettiest colours and the best-smelling perfumes. Since we ve already taken a taxi, I want to head back in a double decker bus. They ve been running since 1956. Boy oh boy, now that s a long time! Mum and I talk about all the things we did together. We really had a good time. I hope we can go out like that again soon! London has so many wonderful places to discover! 5
