(om ja, skriv en kommentar) The Bay Area has an active Scandinavian community, and we are involved in some of their activities. The "Silicon Vikings," a group of Scandinavians (many of whom are Swedes) working in the IT industry, have connected with our undergraduate Swedish (soon to be Scandinavian) Club, which recently became an official student organization on campus, receiving funding for events. The Swedish-American Chamber of Conference in San Francisco includes us on their mailing list and invites us to events, which we sometimes attend. It offers us the opportunity to connect our students with the business interests of the Chamber. The San Francisco Swedish Society renovated and reopened its revered Swedish-American Hall, and we attended that event and have been involved in some of the programming for that organization. SWEA's San Francisco chapter is in touch with us about their scholarship program and the local events they stage, which some of our students attend. We had two graduate students win SWEA scholarships last year. Barbro Osher's Pro Suecia Foundation supports activities in the Bay Area to which we are often invited. 13. Lunds universitet Mittuniversitetet Stockholms universitet Uppsala universitet We are developing a three-way exchange between UC Berkeley's Scandinavian Department, Stockholm University's Comparative Literature Department, and
Zurich's Nordic cultures program. Our Chair, Mark Sandberg, worked on this arrangement with representatives from Stockholm and Zurich, and we had our first visitor under this program from Stockholm this fall. Berkeley has a long-standing Skriv gärna en exchange program with Lund University; this exchange is not directed specifically at kommentar om vilken our program, but we do have undergraduates in our courses who either have typ av samarbete som returned from Lund or are planning to go. Linda Rugg is involved in a research sker. The lärarutbyte eller department is currently hosting Maths Bertell, a Swedish visitor from Mittuniversitet forskningssamarbeten. on the STINT (Stiftelsen för internationalisering av högre utbilding och forskning), who is team-teaching a course with a colleague in the department. We hope to host more STINT scholars in the future. One of our graduate students, Christian Gullette, is involved in an exchange project with a colleague at Uppsala University in the Education Department. 14. Rugg is also on the board of the literary journal Samlaren, and is a co-editor for the third volume of the forthcoming Nordic Literary History, a three-volume work in English on Scandinavian literary history. Christian Gullette (Ph.D. candidate) has given talks in the U.S. and in Sweden on the racial and economic/class issues raised by the films of Ruben Östlund, particularly Play and Force majeure. He has also published translations of poems by contemporary Swedish authors. Zach Blinkinsop (graduate student) has spoken at our national conference on the Swedish drama of the 18th century. He received a grant from SWEA to conduct research in Stockholm and Uppsala in the summer of 2016, and he has been translating works by Olof von Dahlin. Ida Johnson (Ph.D. candidate) also received a SWEA grant and traveled to Sweden to pursue research on Astrid Lindgren's fan mail from her young readers. Ida's primary language is Norwegian, but she has become captivated by Swedish children's literature and has established contact with colleagues in that field in Sweden. She has given talks on Tova nsson. Adam Carl (graduate student) presented a paper on Selma Lagerlöfs novella, Herr Arnes penningar, at our national conference. 16. Stödet från Svenska institutet
På vilket sätt kan SI bäst stödja er verksamhet? Har du förslag på nya sätt vi kan stödja verksamheten på? We are very grateful for SI's support of the ASTRA conference, particularly the invitation of Swedish cultural figures and the willingness to fund graduate student accommodations. This is of great value for all of us, and we hope that SI can continue that support. If any more support could be extended to cover a part of grad student travel, that would be helpful. Some institutions do not have funds for that purpose, and it would be a pity to have people miss for that reason. We have also been the beneficiaries of SI sponsorship of visiting artists, also an important part of our departmental cultural life. 17. Övrigt: Glädjeämnen och/eller svårigheter No particular difficulties come to mind, except perhaps that the computer program that we use to submit this form is unnecessarily complicated.
