Wallander In the footsteps...... of Inspector Wallander. By the time he reached Blekegatan he was out of breath. From Mariagatan he had jogged along Oskarsgatan, although it wasn t far and he had not run particularly fast, the chill, damp autumn air bit into his lungs and his heart pounded. These lines, taken from The Man Who Smiled by Henning Mankell, describe how the main character of the book, Ystad Police Inspector Kurt Wallander, hurries through the streets of Ystad in an effort to stop the person he believes to be a criminal from having him followed. It is not at this pace that the Frivillige Bergnings Corpsen (volunteer firemen) drive through town with their passengers following in Kurt Wallander s footsteps; an event that is arranged in the summer months. On these occasions, one glides along the streets on a veteran fire engine enjoying the sites that Wallander knows so well and that the author Henning Mankell has made famous through the Wallander films.mariagatan and the police station Kurt Wallander lives on Mariagatan, a district that features widely in many of his detective stories. From this address it is not far to the police station adjacent to the old water tower, another central point in the stories. It is here that Wallander and his colleagues Martinsson, SvedKristerberg, Björk etc meet to piece the bits of the puzzle together.
- Based On A True Story In 1998 the famous Swedish writer Jan Guillou published the first part of a trilogy of novels about the crusader Arn Magnusson. Arn is a fictional character, but the events and places from the novels are based on historical reality - based on a true story. The surroundings, churches and ruins still exist in the county, and at the museums there are writings and objects, which together with imagination give us a picture of the Swedish life and their way of living in the kingdoms beginning. It has turned out to be a very successful idea to combine culture with tourism and it has brought many new visitors to West Sweden. It has also inspired many people to study the fascinating history of the kingdoms beginning.
