2011-12 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Keydets Open With All-Military Classic; Start Season vs. Citadel Second Time in Five Years for VMI to Open at Air Force Tournament The 2011-12 version of VMI basketball will open its season in Colorado Springs, Colo., where the Keydets will take part in the first All-Military Classic tournament. The first round of games will take place on Friday, Nov. 11, with Army and Air Force opening up the four-team tourney with a 9:30 p.m. ET game. VMI will then face The Citadel at midnight eastern time, with both opening round games to be televised on the CBS Sports Network, with Roger Twibell (play-by-play) and former VMI assistant coach Pete Gillen (color) on the call. The second set of games begins with the third-place contest Saturday evening at 8:30 Eastern. An audio broadcast will also be available for both VMI games via www.wrel.com and www.vmikeydets.com. The Keydets lose just one letterwinner, albeit First Team All-Big South guard Austin Kenon, but bring in five talented freshmen, including shooting guard Brian Brown and forward Jordan Weethee. Ron Burks and Keith Gabriel return to lead the senior class, which also includes Michael Sparks and Wayne Whiting, while last year s freshman class, led by D.J. Covington and Rodney Glasgow, looks for a repeat performance of its initial collegiate success. After winning its fifth consecutive NCAA scoring title last season, the Keydets will seek #6 this year. VMI averaged 87.9 points per game last year, and no other school has ever led Division I in scoring more than three consecutive years. Last Meeting with The Citadel (2/24/2003): Ben Rand had 20 points and Radee Skipworth added 11 as VMI outscored Citadel by 10 in the second half and pulled away for the 58-49 win. The two schools have not played since 2003, despite having a rivalry on the hardwood that dates back to 1921. Last Meeting with Army (11/13/2009): Austin Kenon had 24 points, including 17 from the foul line, as VMI defeated Army 93-86 to open the 2009-10 season. Ron Burks, Stan Okoye, Keith Gabriel and Michael Sparks all scored in double figures as well. Last Meeting with Air Force: The Keydets have never faced Air Force on the hardwood. A VMI win against The Citadel would: Give the Keydets their fourth straight season-opening win, the first such streak for the program since a run that ran from 1991 through 1994. A VMI win against Army/Air Force would: Give the Keydets a win in their first meeting with the Falcons or their third consecutive win over the Black Knights. A VMI sweep of the two games would: Give VMI its second straight 2-0 start and an All-Military Classic title. VMI vs. The Citadel Friday, Nov. 11-11:59 p.m. ET Clune Arena Colorado Springs, Colo. The Keydets have not won four straight openers since a streak that ran from the 91-92 season through the 94-95 campaign. During this current streak, VMI has lost its second game of the year twice, only winning that contest last season, when the team opened 5-0 for the first time since the 1920 s. Heading West Again: That Northern Colorado game (see previous note) was part of a tournament hosted by Air Force, and held in the Clune Arena. VMI went 0-2 at that year s Air Force Classic, losing 104-97 to Northern Colorado and 98-87 to Dartmouth. Those games were not only the last time VMI played in the Centennial State, but they also marked the last time VMI played west of the Central time zone. Challenging Schedule: The 2011-12 schedule will challenge the Runnin Roos, perhaps as they have not ever been challenged. The Keydets have two notable games on the non-conference docket, as on Nov. 23, they will travel to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes. OSU advanced to last year s regional semifinals, where they lost in a thriller to eventual Final Four participant Kentucky. The Buckeyes return Jared Sullinger, last year s Big 10 Tournament MVP and one of the top interior players in the country. Less than two weeks after that game, VMI will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pitt Panthers on Dec. 6. Pitt was a #1 seed in last year s NCAA tournament, but lost to eventual NCAA runner-up Butler in one of the stranger games in recent memory, a 71-70 Butler win in the tournament s third round. Six in a Row?: After winning its fifth consecutive NCAA scoring title last season, the Keydets will seek #6 this year. VMI averaged 87.9 points per game last year, and no other school has ever led Division I in scoring more than three consecutive years. Bombs Away: The Keydets also paced Division I in three-pointers last season, making 11.3 per contest. They return three players who averaged at least 1.6 treys per game, in Keith Gabriel, Michael Sparks and Rodney Glasgow. The Keydets also ranked 13th in the nation in steals, thanks to 8.7 pilfers per contest, and were 22nd in turnover margin, in large part due to Glasgow, who ranked 17th nationally in the category.

Youth and Experience: VMI has a unique blend of youth and experience on its roster this season, as the Keydets will not only return four seniors, but also have five freshmen on the roster. That freshman class is VMI s largest since 2007-08, the year it last played at Air Force, while the four seniors were all freshmen when the Keydets beat Kentucky to open the 2008-09 season at Rupp Arena. VMI advanced to the Big South Championship game that year, before losing to Radford. Sophomores Seek Encore Performance: Sophomores D.J. Covington and Rodney Glasgow return, looking to repeat their outstanding freshman seasons and complement the strong senior class the Keydets feature this season. Covington was last year s Big South Freshman of the Year, coming on very strong late in the season and winning the final three conference Freshman of the Week awards. He transformed into a fearsome presence in the lane, where he averaged 2.3 blocks per game, and his 57 total blocks were the fifth-most in Keydet history. Covington also earned the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Rookie of the Year honor, awarded to the top first-year player in the state. Glasgow ran the point from the get-go in VMI s high-octane offense, and had good results. He led the Big South in assist/turnover ratio, and ranked 17th nationally with his 2.64 effort. He also was 15th in the conference in three-pointers per game (1.6) and averaged 9.5 points and 3.9 assists per game in his 30 contests. Block Party: While the Keydets are known for their offensive prowess, one aspect of their defense saw a dramatic increase last season, that of blocked shots. Not only did VMI tie for the conference lead in blocks per game (4.5), but the Keydets ranked 46th nationally in the statistic. D.J. Covington s 2.3 blocks per game led the way, but Stan Okoye also averaged nearly one rejection per contest. In all, VMI blocked 141 shots, just three short of its all-time high set in 2009-10. Statistical Oddities From 2010-11: In looking at VMI s results (see page 4) from last season, several oddities appeared: The Keydets contestes were virtually over at halftime, one way or another. VMI was 15-2 when leading at intermission, but just 2-11 when trailing. If one cares to look for another breaking point, with five minutes to play, VMI was 17-1 when leading and 1-12 when down. No games were tied with five minutes to go. The Keydets were also 17-5 when holding opponents under 50% shooting, as well as being 13-1 when the other team scored 80 points or less. Williams 08 Selected to 50 Greatest Players List: VMI alumnus Reggie Williams 08, who played parts of two seasons with the Golden State Warriors and is playing in Spain during the current NBA labor dispute, was named the 44th greatest college basketball player ever in a list published by Grantland.com on Nov. 2. Williams led Division I in scoring both his junior and senior seasons at VMI.
