Långgatorna is a cosmopolitan mess. Here, you could find the whole world in one street. If you are approaching from Järntorget, you are greeted by the spicy fragrances of tandoori, coriander, chilli and lime Asia, and especially Thailand, has come to Andra Långgatan. There are three restaurants in which the word Thai is included. If you wish to change continent from east to west, you can easily move to the hamburger bar. Since 1984, they have been serving a burger that is home-made all the way down to the dressing. From there it is only a step away to Europe, and the pub The Rover, with its 22 varieties of barrelled beer, is a Mecca for the beer connoisseur Here you ll find luxury flats, dossers, porn clubs, antique dealers, temporary contracts for flats to be renovated, and on the street a swarming life at some of Göteborg s classic addresses. Nowhere else in the city are twenty-four hours as long as they are here
Inhabitant 1: I experience Långgatorna as, well, when you enter Långgatorna you feel that, you get another feeling, a more relaxed feeling, I do. You feel more free, I do, in some way. I don t know why, really. Maybe it s because I feel at home there. Yeah, I feel at home there. Inhabitant 2: I think that dynamics is one of the expressions that come spontaneously to mind when I think about Långgatorna, and particularly in comparison to other small districts in the city. There are so many different things, high and low, wide and narrow and so on, in the same place. And I think this is what identifies Långgatorna for me. There is everything, you know, from porn shops and crowded streets to pretty good restaurants, and the collective living is not there as much as it used to. And there is maybe the most exclusive flats in the city, it all crowds in the same streets, it is only a couple of hundred meters we re talking about. For me the soul of Långgatorna is mainly in Andra Långgatan because there you have buildings from different eras ( ) and there is a huge span, um, how can I explain it, of both economics and space, or city environments. Inhabitant 1: Yeah, that s right, both when it comes to the area s shops and businesses. There s the political side too. Inhabitant 2: And it is a kind of grassroots society too, in the sense that things just spring up there, without having been planned. At least that s the feeling you get, it is as though the businesses there have grown organically and that s why it is so special. You can t create artificially. At least I don t think you can. Planner: The question that arises is whether you can preserve it artificially? Inhabitant 1: Yeah, that s the question Planner: [ ] this is where it gets difficult.
Inhabitant 1: It s almost better with a living street, because then there won t be any cars. City planner: Yes, there will be no parking that way. Inhabitant 2: No car parking at all? City planner: No, you could stop and deliver and pick up goods to and from the retail stores, but you can t. I think there has been some experiment, I think, where you have car parks as well, but I m not sure how that s carried out. Inhabitant 2: But how will, for example, I mean, the porn shops won t survive such a crisis, because it will be a crisis for them, you could almost say that with certainty, because they depend on through traffic and parking possibilities. It s obvious that it would be much cosier on Andra Långgatan with pavement cafés and restaurants and what not. But then you would lose that activity and other things would probably disappear as well, the synergy effect will create other effects when that disappears and, well, if you think about rents and such. ( ) But I think that they re necessary. They re there. It s surely really degrading for women, but now they re there. Property owner: But they re not as dominant, as the newspapers present. One would think that Andra Långgatan is a porn-street Inhabitant 2: No, that s bullshit! Property owner: I don t think they re that dominant. Shopkeeper: No, they re not. But these discussions are going on amongst us too, that it is good for keeping the rents down. Not any shop is locating to Andra Långgatan as long as they re there.
