welcome to swe fly contents In this, the first edition of our magazine I thought I d tell you a little bit about SWE FLY. The company was established in 1994 as an air taxi service with a 6-seater plane of model PA31. We have flown air taxis all over the north of Europe and have also flown a Jetstram 341, which is a 19-seater plane. With this aircraft we flew regular flights between Sweden and Norway. During 2002 new owners took over the company. That was when work started to begin flights to Lahore. During 2004 we started flying Fokker 50. This type of aircraft is used for so called feeder flights, (feeder flights means that we fly our passengers to the bigger planes from other places), between Oslo - Stockhlom/Skavsta and between Copenhagen- Stockholm/Skavsta. In February 2005 our first Boeing 767 arrived, which we use to fly to Lahore. This aircraft has room for 213 passengers of which 18 are business class. Our Boeing can fly non-stop for 15 hours although we won t be flying you quite so far today. During December SWE FLY will start flights to Bangkok in Thailand with daily departures from Stockholm and Oslo. Finally we would like to welcome you again and wish you a pleasant journey. And we hope you will fly with us again at SWE FLY-Airline of Sweden. You can only purchase this BMX style beauty at any Biomega reseller. sony ericsson s new mobiles Like its competitor Nokia, SonyEricsson will release new mobile phone models in the autumn: Entertainment telephones Z250i and S600i and 3G telephone K601i Z250i is a traditional foldable mobile phone with the usual functions including two colour displays and a camera. Even more hefty is the S600i which earns its name as an entertainment phone. A large colour display on the outside and the possibility of laying it horizontally means the S600i is made for playing games on, which of course is the purpose. It is also equipped with a 1.3 mega pixel camera. K601i is not at all a simple 3G telephone. Amongst many features it is installed with Flash Lite from Macromedia to allow better and bigger animations. Besides this there is a fantastic feature called Flight Mode, which turns off the phone but still allows you to use the media player in the telephone as usual. 4

the european design show in london The third edition of the European Design Show has opened at London s Design Museum, an exhibition totally dedicated to modern design within more or less expected areas. The focus on this yearly exhibition is to research every area of design and to celebrate its diversity and potential. This year the spotlights are on three totally separate design histories and two rooms, the library and the media room. The three histories are a Dutch ceramics project, Fashion House Lanvin s latest collections and F1 team McLaren Mercedes hunt for thousandths of a second by developing aerodynamic design. Especially the last mentioned saga about the difficult balance between safety and speed should be extra interesting. You can visit the exhibition until 4 September Juan Pablo Montoya in the Team McLaren Mercedes MP4-20, the team's 2005 Formula One challenger Team McLaren Mercedes frida kahlo at the tate modern CK Tate Modern in London pays tribute to the artist Frida Kahlo with an exhibition dedicated to her, the first exhibition with her in Great Britain for over 20 years. This Mexican legend started painting after a coach accident rendered her bed ridden for a longer period, the first of two accidents in her life (according to her self). The other accident was her relationship with the artist Diego Rivera. Most known for her diverse self portrait which is the focal point of this exhibition, lesser known parts, like her view on nationalism will also be on show. The exhibition will run until 9 October matisse a second life louisiana, copenhagen This autumn s Matisse exhibition at Louisiana is a unique Scandinavian event. The exhibition, which presents a new and original approach to Matisse s oeuvre and turns the focus on the late works, has been organized by Louisiana in collaboration with the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, where it is being shown until 17th July 2005. The curator of the exhibition is Hanne Finsen the internationally acknowledged Matisse expert and former director of the Ordrupgaard Collection in Denmark. 12 August - 4 December 2005 albert einstein at the nobel museum The Swedish Nobel Museum will spend a whole year running an exhibition about Albert Einstein Theory of relativity, Nobel Prize winner and violin player. With this exhibition the museum wants to show that Einstein wasn t just an old against the world genius (nobelprize.org), but also an eager and curious youth. Already as a 26 year old he presented no less than five important and physical theories and also sold two patented refrigerators to Electrolux. The exhibition extends from the first theories to the theory of relativity, which made him world famous, up to when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1921.The exhibition is open until April 2006. http://nobelprize.org Adress: Stortorget, Old town, Stockholm 6

welcome onboard let the journey begin photo: john mcintosh The first 767 entered service in Sept. 8, 1982, since then 767 have flown more than 7.5 million flights, and carried more than two billion passengers. photo: john mcintosh The Boeing 767 family is a complete family of airplanes providing maximum market versatility in the 200- to 300-seat market. The Boeing 767 family includes three passenger models - the 767-200ER, 767-300ER and 767-400ER - and a freighter, which is based on the 767-300ER fuselage. The twin-engine 767 - sized between the single-aisle 757 and the larger, twin-aisle 777 - has built a reputation among airlines for its profitability and comfort. The 767-400ER brings significant improvements in operating economics over competing airplanes in the 240- to 300-seat market. The payload capability, intercontinental range, passenger comfort and commonality with other Boeing jetliners give this airplane strong market appeal. The 767 Freighter is a derivative of the popular 767-300ER (extended range) passenger twinjet. All the advancements in avionics, aerodynamics, materials and propulsion that were developed for passenger versions of the 767 are incorporated in the freighter. Its design provides excellent fuel efficiency, operational flexibility, low-noise levels and an all-digital flight deck. You can breathe easy with the 767 family. 767s produce less pollutant emissions per pound of fuel than any comparably sized jetliner, including the A330-200. When combined with the fact that the 767 also burns significantly less fuel, the 767 is truly the clear winner. The 767 family is cleaner than industry standards for all categories of emissions - nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, smoke and carbon monoxide. boeing 767-200er Overall lenght: 48.51 meter Wingspan: 47.6 meter Tall Height: 15.8 meter Interior cabin widht: 4.7 meter Passenger: 213 Maximum takeoff weight: 179 170 kg Maximum range: 12 223 km Typical cruisespeed: 851 km/h 8 9

photo: john mcintosh fun facts The 767 is the first widebody jetliner to be stretched twice. The 767-300 is 21 feet (6.43 m) longer than the original 767-200; and the new 767-400ER is 21 feet longer than the 767-300. The first 767 entered service in Sept. 8, 1982, since then 767 have flown more than 7.5 million flights, and carried more than two billion passengers. The air flowing through a 767-400ER engine at takeoff power could inflate the Goodyear Blimp in seven seconds. It takes about 60 gallons (227 l) of fuel per passenger to get from New York to London on board a 767-400ER. The same volume of gasoline would propel an economy car about half of that distance. The 767 is the favorite airplane on Atlantic routes; it flies across the Atlantic more frequently than all other jetliners combined. The 767-400ER flight deck instrument panel has 82 percent fewer parts than other 767s. By using cast parts, the part count was reduced to 53 from 296. Production hours plummeted to 20 hours from 180 hours. If GE CF6-80C2B8F engines were attached to a typical automobile, at takeoff power the car would accelerate from zero to 60 mph (96.5 kph) in less than half a second. There are 3.1 million parts in a 767 provided by more than 800 suppliers. The 767 is capable of cruising at altitudes up to 43,000 feet (13,106 m) The 767-300ER and 767-400ER hold 23,980 gallons (90,770 l) of fuel - enough to fill 1,200 minivans. It takes only 28 minutes to fill the airplane. The noise level of a 767 taking off from a 1.5 mile (3,000 m) runway is about the same as the average street corner traffic noise. 10

börje salming a superstar with his both feet firmly on the ground Back in 1970, an 18 year old lad from Kiruna, in the North of Sweden got the chance to play a trial ice hockey match for Brynäs, a top Swedish Hockey team, against the Swedish national team, Three Crowns. What then happened over the next two decenniums is known to any Swede with any kind of general knowledge. We got an hour with Börje Salming, the Hockey legend who knows how to best tackle success. Börje walks quickly across Stureplan in Stockholm and glances around. He smiles when I present myself and we small talk a bit while the sun makes a feeble attempt to heat the autumn cold. We walk into a café while people around us try to hide their curiosity, without much success. You were only 18 when you swapped the calm of Kiruna to celebrity in Gävle. A big change wouldn t you say? Absolutely. I still lived at home with my parents but my brother (Stig) hade signed for Brynäs a couple of years earlier and that was of course security for me. The club also took care of me in a good way and I had three good years there. And then you signed or Toronto Yes, it all went very quickly. It was after the world cup 1973 when I and Inge Hammerström received offers and went to Canada. The change was enormous. I could hardly speak the language and Europeans were not totally accepted back then. In what way did the NHL change during your time there? In the 70 s the game was often raw and ugly and the tactics were to scare your opponent. During the 80 s there was less mess and more hockey, so in a way we should have came over then instead, although it went quite well anyway. I am inclined to agree with him. 17 NHL seasons and 1229 matches, 162 goals and 674 assists, voted as the only Swede in the Hall of Fame and generally known as the man who paved the way for European hockey players in North America. But his NHL carer did not only mean full speed ahead in the rink. Parties were many and substantial and the choice of saying no did not exist. Yes, there were a lot of parties back then, especially during away matches. We could 12 13

BOMAN COMMUNICATION be away for weeks and you wanted to skip hotel boredom at all cost. Also the high pressure we had from all angles didn t help. It was a way of disconnecting he tells us. The Homecommer who didn t want to go home In his native country he became known as BJ, Americans were tackled, Czechs were frightened and shots were practised on every school playground in the country. His popularity was enormous and he gladly tells everybody how much he appreciated Sweden and how much he still does. So when the subject of moving home is brought up I guess the answer is obvious. No, not at all. We had more or less decided to stay. The kids were in school there and we had a lot of friends. But Anders Hedberg, who at that time worked for AIK, nagged me all the time and wanted me to sign for them. At the same time I had the honour of playing in the world cup on my home soil and there I got the taste for Sweden. After that I played a few seasons in AIK and stayed in Sweden. We absolutely do not regret that choice. Sweden is quite simply best. Resan, upplevelsen och minnet Nya Porsche Carrera är en fantastisk bil. Den bästa 911:an hittills. You are a nature person? Yes, but we lived in Vaxholm with nature all around us but still close the big city. It is perfect. In the winter it s just to put your skates on and take a long skate trip if you feel like doing that and if the need for fishing and hunting arises I go home to Kiruna Talking about Kiruna, how does it feel to have been named honorary citizen there? I m incredibly proud of that. Free fishing and hunting for small hunt for the rest of my life is included in the honour and this suits me perfectly. Lars Törnmans motivation was quite funny. It would be embarrassing if we were to arrest an honorary citizen for poaching I had mentioned that I poached a couple of times in my youth. From bruise marks to trade marks 1993 hockey life took a quick and less amusing end. A serious knee injury signalled the end of a fantastic career but also the start of another. Today he runs a successful business amongst others the famous Salming Sports in Gothenburg and Salming Underwear in Borås. The products are successful in and outside Sweden and he travels around the world to promote his trade marks. How often are you in Gothenburg? It depends. When it is time for new collections I am there often, but it is not the same now as it was before when I was there feeling each bit of fabric. I now leave that up to other people, but I like Gothenburg. It is a small but really nice town. I have had a lot of fun there. But why the businessman? You received offers to become a music king and film star. God, yes. All sorts of people called when I returned home and came up with more or less crazy offers but I had advisors that helped me to choose the ones that seemed the best to invest in. Besides my family have been included in the decisions and had opinions too. Börje can see a lot of similarities between business life and the hockey philosophy he has mastered, amongst other things the value of team work and confidence. All involved have to feel just as important for the result no matter what their job is. The worst thing I know is a bully who thinks he is better than anyone else. If it says MD on their business card it does not mean they are better or more important than anyone else, just that they have a different function he says. A legend in the hockey world Börje s openness and good mood meets all the preconceived expectations about this sympathetic sports profile. We got an idea of how big he was as a hockey player last autumn when he was appointed to hand www.porsche.se 15

Incredible. They could have chosen Gordie Howe or any one of the other legends, but they chose me. I couldn t understand it. The final was actually in Toronto and that was probably why my name came up. But still.it was an incredible honour. How do you remain humble after all the years of being patted on the back and receiving all the praises? You should be happy and proud of what you have achieved, but still not believe you are better than anyone else. I am not better than you, the waitress or a homeless person just because I have succeeded in hockey. We all have different talents and are just as worthy. Is it not difficult when everyone wants to talk to you? No, not really. You have to take the time with everybody. If they admire me and like what I have done, it would be lack of respect to ignore them. Naturally I can t talk for hours with everybody and if I m in a hurry I explain that, but I should always find the time to exchange a couple of words. What about sports journalist s questions? Can you reveal one that was really bad? Yes, it was during a match with AIK and we were 4-0 down. In the middle of the match a Swedish TV journalist pointed his microphone at me and asked How does it feel?..i almost broke my stick and wrapped it around his neck laughs Börje. Finally, could you imagine coaching the national team some time? Yes, but not the way my life is today. We wrap up our conversation and head out into Stureplan again. It hits me that I have forgotten to ask about the tributes after the Canada Cup in 1976, all the All Star matches, being named in the world team, injuries and the high pain barrier and everything we read about when we were kids, but we said an hour not a week. After taking a few photos and with a few camera problems, where Börje gave some technical support we say goodbye and head for the next appointment in a pressing agenda. And yes, he does actually walk away with both feet firmly on the ground. Andreas Sjölander 16

pakistan an exciting pearl of the middle east Would you like to experience a different holiday? Would you like to stroll around in towns that are 4000 years old? Would you like to wake your lust for adventure? Do you want to shop for beautiful things at a low cost? Do you quite simply want to experience an exciting culture? Than the answer is Pakistan! Yes, you heard correctly, Pakistan! This fantastic country boarders to India in the east, the Arabian Sea in the south, Iran in the south west and China and Afghanistan in the north. The country has 130 million inhabitants with various ethnic backgrounds and tribal structures. Pakistan has so much to experience, says Shahid Kamal, Pakistan s ambassador to Stockholm. Six of the 10 highest mountains in the world are in Pakistan, among them the second biggest mountain of them all, K2. We have a nature that is unique with beautiful dales, long stretches of beach and even deserts, according to Shahid Kamal. Increased tourism The last few years tourism to Pakistan has increased immensely as more and more people have discovered this beautiful country. The climate in Pakistan varies. In the north it has cold winters and mild summers and in the south they have a tropical climate. Because the country s economy has become better we have been able to build our infra structure, which is important to be able to take in foreign visitors. We have modern airports, stable and safe domestic flights, a good road network and big hotels to facilitate tourists explains Shahid Kamal. Direct flights from Stockholm If you want to go to Pakistan there are travel agents in Sweden, who sell holidays. Flights leave from the bigger airports in Europe including Oslo and Copenhagen. Soon Stockholm will have direct flights to Pakistan once Swefly open a direct route to Lahore in Pakistan. Flights to Pakistan take about seven hours, not much more than flying to the Canaries in other words. To travel to Pakistan you need a visa. For more information on applying for a visa and other facts visit www.pakistanembassy.se. Exciting foods and architectures I don t think anyone would regret visiting my home country. The Pakistanis are friendly people who would gladly see foreign tourist have a pleasant and safe visit. The city of Lahore in the Punjab Province in the northeast of the country is especially worth visiting says Ambassador Shahid Kamal. Legend tells us that the city of Lahore was created by the son of King Rama 4000 years ago. Lahore is the second biggest city in Pakistan with close to 9 million inhabitants. sanderson extravagance and pure simplicity The hotel reads like a page ripped from the surrealists manifesto: a desire to bridge the gap between fantasy and reality, the pairing of seemingly unrelated objects, and a desire to return to the innocence of childhood, where a freewheeling, down the rabbit hole approach to life is embraced. This is Wonderland for the jetset. Sanderson, the second Ian Schrager Hotel to open in London, is an extraordinary Urban Spa the first of it's kind that represents the Next Wave of hotel. This breakthrough hotel is a radical, creative and subversive hotel for the new millennium. It is an ironic combination a balancing act between extravagance and pure simplicity. This modern classic offers a New Luxury that celebrates opulence, glamour, and style as well as spirituality and well-being, but all in a way that is pared down and tempered with a healthy dose of wit and restraint. Sanderson, which followed the triumphal opening of Mr. Schrager s electric and thrilling St Martins Lane, is a magical and serenely elegant sanctuary, a genuine Oasis in the midst of one of Europe s busiest, most cosmopolitan cities. The central mission behind the 150- room Sanderson was to fully realize and integrate the Urban Spa philosophy throughout the entire hotel, to stretch the artistic envelope in new and surprising ways to create a hotel that mixed the baroque and the modern in such a daring and imaginative fashion - that it would create an unforgettable, surreal and dynamic dreamscape. With no walls other than those of its exterior, Sanderson is a romantic, flowing space a sexy and sensual stage set suffused with a sense of meditation and calm. Structure and formal limits are eschewed; in place of them is an entirely personal kind of milieu that is meant to inspire individuality, to let free the spirit, the mind, the body and soul. Sanderson is so unusual and unique, it represents a new archetype in the hotel industry. From an "Indoor/Outdoor" Lobby with a private "Courtyard Garden" open to the sky, to enchanting guest 22 23

room salons that break with any preexisting notions of a hotel room, to the luxurious, expansive 10,000 square-foot Agua Bathhouse, this sophisticated Urban Spa presents the consummate setting for reflection, relaxation, joy and pure fun all in the midst of one of the most exciting cities on earth. Sanderson embodies a radical and accomplished collaboration between Ian Schrager and world-renowned designer Philippe Starck. Breaking new ground and stretching creative parameters, Schrager and Starck have found new layers of style, surrealism, fantasy and wonder. Sanderson s Indoor/Outdoor Lobby, built around the enchanting Courtyard Garden, is a marvel of color and light and new ideas. With sheer curtains and silk drapes that flow through and around its perimeters, and visual tableaux that delight and entrance the eye, the Lobby is a festival of custom-made and carefully chosen furnishings, flourishes and surprises. Each of its public areas is distinct but interwoven into an urban retreat where intimate spaces, magic places and warmth, wit and whimsy proliferate. Background Sanderson is one of an extraordinary and acclaimed collection of unique properties owned and operated by Ian Schrager Hotels. Since the 1980s, when he opened Morgans with the late Steve Rubell thus pioneering the revolutionary Boutique Hotel concept Mr. Schrager has continued the tradition of developing hotel properties with cutting-edge style and unparalleled service standards. After his and Mr. Rubell s spectacular successes in the entertainment and nightclub business with Studio 54 and Palladium, Mr. Schrager has put his uncanny sense of aesthetic and cultural sensibilities to ideal use in the hospitality industry. Morgans, on Madison Avenue in New York City, was the first hotel that Mr. Schrager developed in 1984. An instant hit, the hotel revolutionized the industry with the introduction of the Boutique Hotel concept, characterized by personalized service and home-away-from-home ambiance in a setting of timeless elegance. This boutique concept was again showcased with great success at New York's Royalton, the first property designed by Philippe Starck. Next came Paramount, located in the heart of New York s theater and cultural center. Paramount is the embodiment of yet another revolutionary concept: Cheap Chic. The hotel is a visually sophisticated, elegant hub of activity at affordable rates. Conveniently located close to Broadway, the fashion district and the Jacob Javits Convention Center, and just south of Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall and Carnegie Hall, Paramount remains a highly original, hugely successful social gathering place. In 1995, Mr. Schrager opened the hugely well-received Delano, set directly on Miami Beach. Located in the heart of one of America s most exciting and energized gateway cities, Delano represents the next generation of Urban Resort where the notion of the "Indoor/Outdoor Lobby" and the idea of Simple Chic were initiated. Delano is, at once, a red-hot trendsetting hub of social activity, a sophisticated, serene hotel and an elegant beachfront family resort at reasonable prices. Next, Mr. Schrager came to Los Angeles in 1996, with the opening of Mondrian, on world-famous Sunset Boulevard. Mondrian is the consummate expression of a balancing act between apparent contradictions entertainment and spirituality, cutting-edge style and simplicity, fantasy and reality. The hotel perfectly captures the quintessential California lifestyle by uniting its deeply rooted appreciation of the outdoors and relaxed, casual living with a pervasive sense of magic, glamour and excitement. The opening of St Martins Lane in London in late 1999 represented Mr. Schrager s first foray across the Atlantic. Received with great fanfare and both critical and customer acclaim, St Martins Lane is an utterly original urban hotel that takes the Schrager concept of Hotel as Theatre to a new level to provide its guests with a singularly magical, exciting and visceral experience. The hotel has been predicated on the idea that today, luxury is about new experiences, about making a connection with something truly special. Situated in Covent Garden, one of the city s most lively and active districts, this hotel combines warmth, glamour, charm, sophistication and style with a real sense of its setting in one of Europe s most cosmopolitan cities. Hudson, Ian Schrager s first New York City hotel in more than a decade, delivers a potent combination of urban adventure, daredevil design, and true affordability to arguably the most jaded city in the world, giving New York something even it has never seen before. In a city renowned for its boldness, diversity and eclecticism, Hudson is an inspired piece of organized chaos a reflection and distillation of New York itself, a melting pot of styles and ideas shimmering with a hot-rod vivacity and in-your-face style that is hard to ignore and even harder to forget. Clift, Ian Schrager s first hotel in San Francisco, is a template-breaking tour de force that promises to change forever the notion of what it means to be a luxury hotel. Elegant and sophisticated, yet in a totally modern way, Clift takes conventional hotel philosophy and turns it on its head. While still bearing some of the hallmarks of the traditional luxury hotel experience, such as exemplary service and amenities, what makes Clift truly special-is its daring and brilliant juxtapositions. The hotel reads like a page ripped from the surrealists manifesto: a desire to bridge the gap between fantasy and reality, the pairing of seemingly unrelated objects, and a desire to return to the innocence of childhood, where a freewheeling, down the rabbit hole approach to life is embraced. This is Wonderland for the jetset. 24 25

orlando a superstar in full bloom Orlando Bloom s success story is infamous nowadays. With two days left of his actors education he got a job as Legolas and literally became a superstar over night. After following that up with more fat-suit projects like Troy and Pirates of the Caribbean he has climbed up on Hollywood s A-list at rocket speed. In Kingdom of Heaven he s made his first real title roll and he does it, of course, with a sword in his hand. The fact that there has been a lot of sword waving so far in his career he is well aware of. Despite that, he never had any doubts when he was offered to film with Ridley Scott. No, blimey, I had no plans to make another sword-film after Troy said Orlando thoughtfully, but the possibility to play a so completely different roll together with Ridley was too good to refuse. Everything went really fast, but as mentioned a title roll in a Ridley Scott adventure is big. Being an actor and receiving parts that feel newsworthy and a part of the times is wonderful. The Crusade is the basis of the problems we see in these areas today. The sore has never really healed. We knew when we started that there would be a debate, but I worked with Ridley on Black Hawk Down and knew that he had the integrity needed to manage such a subject. Balian is your first title roll, how did it feel? Obviously I was a little bit nervous, but as I had auditioned for the part I had quite a lot of self confidence. Ridley is also very good at pep talks. He inspires people around him to really do their best. You really want to make an effort. Balian as a character is such an unwilling hero, more like those in spaghetti westerns and Sergio Leone film if you know what I mean. Sometimes it was of course difficult and then it felt like I had my own little crusade to deal with (Laughter). This also means that you will be even more famous. Is this something you think about? Well, I look at it as a job. You don t think so much about what happens afterwards. Experience of having made this film is what you have as an actor. We don t have anything to do with editing, marketing and things, which can sometimes be frustrating. There have been a few epics lately that may have been a bit too long and not made the money they expected. I believe that they made something because of the length of our film. It may have been a bit tighter but..yes in any case it has been an incredible unbelievable film for me. I have learnt a lot. And the fans, how are you affected by them? A film set is a bit like when the circus comes to town, especially when it is a giant production like this one. We are not exactly invisible and people hope to catch a glimpse of some of the stars. It can get a bit crazy but what can they do, eat me? Privately I don t notice it at all. I spent a long weekend just after making the film when I went back to London. I was quite paranoid when I strolled along Oxford Street. But, you know, after a while I noticed that no one reacted and I didn t have any problems being left alone. It is after all the fans who see my films and therefore keep me in work. So, I am actually glad I have them.»» 30 31

ridley scott a dream coming true The Gladiator was the beginning of all the historical adventure epics, often with Orlando Bloom among cast, which has poured over us the past few years. But with Kingdom of Heaven Ridley Scott uses the genre to show how it s done once and for all. When Swe Fly Magazine caught up with Ridley Scott in London he is in a brilliant mood, and no wonder. According to the 68 year old director he has been dreaming of making a film about knights since he was 13 and now it is finally finished. I wanted the message of tolerance and at the same time take up and remove racist aggression, which in my opinion is the biggest enemy we have in today s society. People are ignorant, they isolate themselves and can judge whole groups in one move. We have a colossal lack of understanding for other people There is a lot of mystery and romance surrounding men in iron suits and there are a lot of discrepancies that have been accepted despite all the information about the crusade. If you start reading properly you will find ruthless attacks that happened during 200 years. Compare that with the propaganda, which is what it actually is about taking back the holy land that wasn t even ours from the beginning. So yes. they we pretty dark times. It is not especially difficult to make similarities between Kingdom of Heaven and our own time, not least the situation in Iraq, which has even been called the American Crusade, has created some discussion around the film, but Ridley tends to tone down the political side of the project. It s there if you choose to see it but it s a film, not a documentary. 9/11 has really nothing to do with this besides in the aftermath USA invaded, which very sadly is described as a crusade. What the president forgot was that those who performed the real crusade were mostly criminals. When Godfrey took Jerusalem it resulted in a blood bath and without any real reason apart from being able to say Hi guys, we believe in god too. Is it ok if we share this town? Then you have to decide for yourself if it was worth it. It also has to do with the conflict between Muslims and Christians. Did you think this would cause a debate? No, I didn t want to upset anybody. What I wanted was to have a little balance. If I believe that Saladin was a criminal? Definitely not! There is much written about him, both in Muslim and Christian scripts, which repeat the themes pragmatic noble and fair. And it must be emphasized because there isn t many today who know who he is. Some know that Saddam Hussein had him as his roll model and make the assumption that Saladin must have been evil. There is a lot of ignorance about this period that it actually makes it dangerous. And when journalists see this in some kind of headline angle then it is bloody unforgivable. Were there many people who had opinions about the project before it got started? No, not really. The material was so good that most people realised its potential. Sure, there were some that said what if? but I wouldn t be able to make any films if I were to take every what ifs into account. You have to dare a little. The film follows the young smith Balian, who has just lost his wife and child. During his despair the mighty Sir Godfrey (Liam Neeson) turns up and claims that he is Balian s father. Against his will the smith follows the knight to the holy land to come to grips with his surroundings and the adventure begins. That the new found star Orlando Bloom was to play Balian the director didn t hesitate for a second. He has a very pleasant soft side which I thought was perfect for this part so it was an easy choice. Besides I am both the editor and the director and don t need to discuss with anyone other than the studio and I usually make sure to have a good relationship with them says Ridley and smiles. I have never understood the nonsense that we should be enemies any way. People should think about how it works. The studio just gave me 10 million dollars to spend on some obscure idea. Isn t that worth a little respect? They don t actually have to give me this money. I appreciate that they give me these enormous sums of money to make my films. Films cost money so therefore the art goes hand in hand with commerce. As a producer you have to be somewhere in between. Did you need to compromise on anything? No, not really, I think we kept a good balance. You need to know that you make a film for an audience on a certain level. The problem is that you have a budget but still want to include everything. I wanted the message of tolerance and at the same time take up and remove racist aggression, which in my opinion is the biggest enemy we have in today s society. People are ignorant, they isolate themselves and can judge whole groups in one move. We have a colossal lack of understanding for other people. What do you like best about the finished product? It is probably the idea to include the message about tolerance on a huge scale and also to make an epic adventure. Remember I haven t made a documentary, not at that price. If I had done they would most probably hang me by my testicles. I have to make films that appeal to the public that contain everything I want and is also entertaining. If someone leaves the film and thinks Hmmm I didn t know that. If it means that I have succeeded? Absolutely.»» 32 33

10 pages of the manuscript for Kingdom of Heaven were enough to convince Jeremy Irons that this was a film he did not intend to miss. And after reassurances he would play Sibyllas virgin if he had to the director backed off and the roll as Tiberias was filled, a choice that no one regretted. we must respect each others differences. Respect each others gods and try to understand them. That s the only way to move forward. Just a few days before filming was due to commence French actress Eva Green found out that she would play Sibylla in Kingdom if Heaven. A part that differs significantly from her break through in Bertolucci s The Dreamers. There she didn t have to worry about her contact lenses when the sand storms swept over the landscape. But what won t you do to film with Ridley Scott? The lanky Britt is not exactly a newcomer to big productions. But this is the first time, if you oversee an old advert, that he worked together with Ridley Scott and it seems to be a positive experience. Well, I was overwhelmed. If there was a war I would like to have Ridley by my side. He s an unbelievable general. He is also a director who knows how to fill the big screen. Always. Even when it comes to the sensitive side. It is rich in details and a colourful painting he has painted. Wherever you look there is something interesting and still there is a central power that holds everything together. You sound satisfied with the result. I think Kingdom of Heaven is a fantastic film, which looks at a very interesting era. A time that echoes even in our days. It s balanced and not and American Gun-Ho shoot-em-up-film. I am really looking forward to seeing the extended version released on DVD. The stories are more tied together there. Just look at the special effects, there are many who.eh.take for example George Lucas and his Star Wars films. Brilliant effects but honestly who cares? But with a director that uses special effects to strengthen what has already been created gives it another meaning. The only thing wrong with the film at the moment is that it s too short. What do you like most about the film? The message. What I get out of this film is that we must respect each others differences. Respect each others gods and try to understand them. That s the only way to move forward. The world is getting smaller, we have ethnic differences, religious differences and cultural differences and if we feel we are forced to dominate all others because we believe our way is right? Our want to steer our religion, our anything. Well then battles like in the film will continue. By saying that men are a majority in Kingdom of Heaven is an understatement. The exception is Eva Green although despite that she is practically the only woman, and that it is her debut on a big set she was calm. I never really had time to reflect. Obviously it was a bit nerve wrecking and overwhelming to be surrounded by all the extras, helicopters and such things but after a while when you get to know all the people, you get used to it. Ridley takes the time to explain what he wants which is also reassuring. He was besides that very open for other people s ideas, which I thought was quite an unusual quality. What relation to the crusade did you have before the film? I didn t know much about it. It is quite an unknown time despite all the myths, but this short time of peace I find very fascinated. What is the biggest difference between making The Dreamer and Kingdom of Heaven? The size of the set. And maybe the attitude towards nude scenes. It was so comical. In the long version you get to see my nipple in one of the scenes. It was very British when they asked and almost blushed when they explained.em Well, it s like this, we are making a love scene and. I laughed and said Come on! I was in The Dreamers! A nipple is not so bad. Although I try to be a bit careful. I don t want to be typecast as the sexy girl from the Bertolucci film, so. What, in Kingdom of Heaven, did you like most? Well, I am a woman (laugh) so I am more interested in feelings. There is a substance and humanity which I like. It s a film with both feelings and a powerful political message. Next Eva Green plays a part in Paris je t aime, there Orlando Bloom has a small part. He s a down to earth type. In Kingdom of Heaven he finally got to show that he can act. I remember thinking when I read the manuscript how the devil he will manage this. It was such a high level language. But he made it come to life. It was great fun working with him. 34 35

Photo: Daniel Wilby Photo: Daniel Wilby This is freestyle wrestling in mud. The wrestlers only wear shorts and are oiled in which makes the wrestling difficult but at the same time interesting to watch. wrestling in pakistan 40 celsius and a mixture of sweat, oil and mud. It s not exactly WWF. This is for real, comments Haji Abdul Rashid several times. WWF-wrestling is such a popular TVentertainment in Pakistan that many believe it is typical western wrestling. In this back yard traditional Pakistan wrestling is practised. Far from training halls, soft mats and cooling systems Rashid coaches sturdy wrestlers, some of them world class. It s 40o Celsius and a mixture of sweat, oil and mud. Exhaust pollution lays heavy over the streets. Tooting Rickshaws and general chaos is mixed with prayers shouted out from minaret at the nearby mosque. On the outskirts of the old part of Lahore, in the district s back streets I find Haji Abdul Rashid. People call him The Manila Champion because he brought home a gold medal in 1953. He shows photos from a time he was hailed as a hero and his pot belly not yet existed. Pictures that show him shaking hands with the Iranian Shahan, where he is being hailed by Pakistan s president and attending an invitation from Mohammad Ali s wife. The photographs have faded over time, some of them so much so that he tried to fill them in with a felt tip pen. After a successful career as a wrestler he became the coach for the Pakistan national wrestling team. The position has since been taken over by his son. Nowadays he is a pensioner but continues to coach traditional Pakistan Punjab-wrestling at local level. Freestyle wrestling in mud The difference between Punjab s traditional wrestling and international wrestling is huge he says. This is freestyle wrestling in mud. The wrestlers only wear shorts and are oiled in which makes the wrestling difficult but at the same time interesting to watch. Before every practise session the wrestlers hack up the ring, which looks more like arable land than a practice ring. They carefully remove any stones and rake the ring before helping to oil in each other with oil and sand. Before wrestling commences they massage each other as part of the warming up process. The fight begins from a standing position as in Judo, but without the suit and because of the oil it is difficult to grab hold of your opponent. The technique is to be as close as possible to work and at the same time strength becomes more decisive. That s a Kala Jang, says Rashid and points to a wrestler who performs what is known in Judo as a Kate-guruma. The technical similarities between wrestling and Judo are many and obvious. Amongst wrestlers there are also Judo fighters and it is easy to believe that it is through them that Judo-techniques have become a part of wrestling. But this is not the case. Despite the similarities the techniques have been developed side by side. Respect for each other Several of the wrestlers are covered in mud. It s in their beards, in their crew cut hair, in their shorts. The ring, which has 38 39

A professional wrestler can drink up to eight-ten litres of milk a day and eat/drink two kilos crushed almonds. been cut up before practise, looks uncomfortable. They try to achieve the holds and locks as best they can. It s possible but the oil creates problems for the wrestler who is attacking. The mud is what makes it possible to grab hold of the opponent. On the wall behind the wrestlers something is written in Urdu, which for the untrained eye to a certain extent looks like Arabic. Evening prayers roll over the district s roof tops and I ask if it is possible that a text from the Koran has been painted on the wall. We have the same respect for our training ground as we do for our mosque, but this is not a religious place. Many who practice here are Christians. The Judo coach over there is a Christian, the man explains and hints that the subject of religion does not fit in here. Instead there are rules that apply for the training area that are painted on the walls. No shoes in the mud and no spitting. No gossip or back talking anyone, and to make sure to shower before and after practice. Respect for each other is important here. There may not be any aggressions or anger between the wrestlers. They are to behave politely adds Rashid. Special food After practice and the necessary shower the wrestlers drink juice, this has taken a couple of hours to prepare. While most have struggled in the mud, two have struggled to prepare the juice, which contains amongst other things, almonds, seeds from water melon, black pepper and sugar. The food the wrestlers eat is special and quite different from the food international wrestlers eat, says Rashid while the juice is carried in large clay pots. Besides the special juice, which the wrestlers drink at least twice a day they drink milk and eat lots of beef and Ghee a buttery oil. A professional wrestler can drink up to eight-ten litres of milk a day and eat/drink two kilos crushed almonds. The juice cools off, which is needed although it is cold. The heat hangs heavy in the air. During practice spectators have walked in to watch. Afterwards they judge. Small boys run errands while a couple of wrestlers take the time to show a couple of holds again. Outside on the exhaust drained streets of Lahore there are not many who talk about Pakistan wrestling. It is the WWF-wrestling shown on TV with the appropriate printed T-shirts that is the subject. Daniel Wilby 3500 year ago wrestling was practiced where today is known as Pakistan and India. Wrestling s history is old, so old in fact that it is generally seen to be the world s oldest forms of training. Although wrestling looks similar in Egypt and all the way to India there are several moves, which today clearly differ from the traditional Punjab wrestling and what we are used to in Europe. The first and most eyecatching is of course the surface. The ring, which can either be square or round, is made of earth that has been hacked, raked and wet. This makes the earth soft enough to protect the wrestlers when they fall but at the same time not too cause the wrestlers slipping. As the wrestlers are oiled in properly with oil they look like they have been crawling through mud. Rule wise Punjab wrestling is a freestyle wrestling with relatively few rules. The hundreds of techniques in this style often remind us of a cross between Olympic wrestling and Judo. Slow, standing wrestling and throws are most common. On the ground more locking techniques are allowed than in Olympic wrestling and even sometimes holds that choke the opponent. Punches and kicks are not allowed. A wrestling match does not consist of rounds and does not allow time for rest. Beforehand a match time is decided, e.g. one hour, and if no one has won the match within the time limit the match continues as long as the wrestlers can and want to. There are three judges in a match, one in the ring and two outside. The winner is the wrestler who succeeds locking the opponent s shoulders and hip to the ground at the same time. As the name implies wrestling gathers participants in both Pakistan and India. In both countries it is seen as a national sport, but it has been difficult during long periods for wrestlers from these countries to fight each other.
