GOODBYE BAFANA Describing the characters (p 74) Here are a few suggestions on how you may use the list of adjectives (pp 9 10) to describe the main characters. Level * 1 Individually Let the class read the list of adjectives and make sure that they have understood what the words mean. Ask them to write the Swedish translation next to each adjective. They may use a dictionary if necessary. Each student then chooses at least three adjectives to describe each of the main characters. On page 20 you will find instructions to 2 In groups After the individual assignment, the students work in groups and share their thoughts and observations. Each group agrees on three adjectives that describe each of the main characters best, and make a list. Let the groups practise learning the adjectives by playing a card game (cards on pp 11 16). Each student picks a card and reads the English adjective. If he/she knows the word in Swedish, he/she keeps the card, if not, the card is returned to the pile. Once all the cards are taken, each student counts his/her cards. The one with the most cards wins. On page 20 you will find instructions to 3 In class This assignment works best as a followup after the group work. Ask one person in each group to write their list of adjectives on the board. Compare the lists and ask the students to explain their choices. Encourage the students to use the list of Useful phrases (pp 7 8) to help them express their thoughts. GOODBYE BAFANA Describing the characters In this assignment you will get a list of adjectives. Read them and make sure you understand what they mean. Then pick three adjectives on the list to describe the main characters below. TEACHERS q PP 9 10 AND 20 22 1. Nelson Mandela 2. Gloria Gregory 3. Natasha Gregory 4. Winnie Mandela 5. Zindzi Mandela 6. Vosloo 7. Major Pieter Jordaan Here is an example of a description of a character. James Gregory Indecisive As a young boy, James Gregory and a black boy named Bafana are good friends, but as James grows older he allows people to convince him that all black people are savages and deserve to be locked up in prison. However, in his heart he does not really believe this. Nevertheless, he marries a woman who is raised according to the same principles, and raises his own children to believe that black people are inferior to whites. Angry James gets very angry when he witnesses how unjustly blacks are treated. What makes him even angrier is the realization that all the information he gives his boss, information he learns from the letters the prisoners receive and send, has a direct connection to assassinations of prisoners or/and their relatives. James Gregory has no intention of murdering or harming anyone, yet he becomes the main source of information directly leading to their deaths. Good James Gregory wants to be a good man. He is caring and responsible. His intentions are good, yet the outcome of most of his actions isn t. The goodness in him prevails when he is convinced that the monsters are, in fact, the Caucasians and not the blacks. He starts to help Mandela in every way he can, and he becomes interested in learning what the Freedom Charter says. Another good deed is when he gives Winnie Mandela some chocolate that her husband sent her as a Christmas present, knowing that this would cause him a lot of trouble. 74 4
