GENERAL 1. Give a general description of your element/solid (history, förekomst, applications, environmental perpectives etc). STRUCTURE 2. Draw the crystal structure of your element. Draw both the conventional and the primitive unitcell in one figure. Mark the unitvectors and give their values in Å. Calculate the volumes of the two different unitcells. What is special with the primitive cell? Which crystalplane is most-densely packed? Draw this plan and give its Millerindex. Calculate the packning density in the plane. 3. Describe the Debye-Scherrer (pulver) method and construct a diffraction diagram of your element. Explain how one indicates a diffraction diagram and indicate your lines. In the Debye-Scherrer method, the samples are prepared in powders, which means that there are a large number of crystalliter with different orientations respect to the incident x-rays. Due to the crystal symmetry, many different (hkl) planes are equivalent and contribute to the intensity of the same diffraction lines. The number of planes that contribute to the same line is called mutiplicity. Determine the multiplicity of the three first lines in your element s diffraction diagram. LATTICE DYNAMICS 4. Define the concept of cohesive energy and give its value for your elemental solid. How does your solid bind togather? Describe the type of binding which dominates your crystal. 1 p 5. Describe in general the classical and quantum-mechanical aspects of lattice vibrations. Using a simple classical model, try to calculate the force constant for the atoms in your solid. Starting from an experimental measured dispersion curve in the most densely packed direction and use later a one-dimensional model.
6. Starting from the experimental dispersion curves of your solid, determine the sound velocities in three different directions of your crystal and compare them with the values in tables. Give your discussions and conclusions. THERMAL PROPERTIES 7. Using the experimental data, plot the temperature-dependent heat capacity of your solid. Then calculate the heat capacity and its temperature dependence using the Debye- and Einstein models for your elements. Describe first these models and give the assumptions that are made in the models. How well do the Debye- and Einstein models describe your solid? Compare specially the low-temperature regime. What are the differences between the two models. 8. Debye- och Einstein models describe the phononic contribution to the heat capacity. Discuss in detail the model which can be used to describe electronic contribution to the heat capacity. How does the density of states at the Fermi level affect the magnitude of the electronic contribution? How much do the electrons contribute to the heat capacity of your element, at temperatures at 4K and 300K, respectively? 4 p 3 p ELEKTRONISKA 9. Diskutera. 1 p
11. Beräkna tomma gittermodellens bandstruktur för Ditt ämne i en riktning i Brillouinzonen (bcc: [110], fcc: [111], hcp: [100]). Var ligger Ferminivån? Markera i bandstrukturen. Skissa ändringarna i Din bandstruktur. 12.
