The streets are deserted now, but in fact, over 3 million people live here. My name is Eva, I m 11 years old and I m Zulu. Here we go again. Dad s stuck in bed with rheumatism again. I ll have to go to the drugstore and get him medicine. I know everybody in my neighbourhood and everybody likes me! Shakes belongs to a group of Zuludancers. He s invited me to a party- -to dance with them. I ll be the youngest in their group! I dream of becoming a dancer. This couldn t be better! In Johannesburg the sidewalks are covered with fruit and vegetables. Johannesburg was built during the gold rush. This is Diagonal Street. It s the centre of the financial district. My city is a mix of modernism and ancestral African traditions. I said I had to go to the drugstore. Well, this is the drugstore. Isn t it incredible? 2
Here you can find two things: authentic African objects- -and a lot of animal skins, roots and powders. They re used to make some of the best remedies in the world. It s amazing. Luckily I m little, otherwise I wouldn t be able to go- -under all of the hundreds of skins and bones hanging from the ceiling. This is how we get root powder. There s nothing like the good old-fashioned way! Herbal teas and a special cream... With this my dad will be up- -and around in two days. Sounds like magic, doesn t it? The city is so big that the freeway goes through it. Underneath the freeway is an authentic African market. You can find fortune-tellers from certain tribes here. I want to know what my chances are of becoming a real Zulu dancer. What do you think? Am I really good enough to dance with the group? Fortune-tellers will predict my future. I have to listen really hard- -because of the noisy traffic here! The fortune-teller says that I have to get the skin of a crocodile. It ll give me strength to succeed. I also have to understand my roots- -and my culture. If I do all this I will be worthy of becoming a real dancer. That cost me a lot of money. But it was worth it! As for my roots, I don t know what she meant. I ll have to find out. I know where to find the skin. Outside of Johannesburg there s a farm that raises crocodiles. It s a real farm, but there aren t any cows, chickens or pigs here. Just crocodiles! They re amazing. They re the only dinosaurs still alive on our planet. 3
The owner invites me to come along. It s snack time for the crocodiles. These beasts have just gone two months without eating. It s not the best time to kiss them. There are over 300 crocodiles here. That s enough to make you shiver! How about that for reflexes! I d hate to be that chicken. I feel a little more comfortable with these two. They re dangerous at only six months old. They ve got a mean bite! Here s my crocodile skin. I wonder how expensive it will be. Fantastic! He s giving it to me for free to help with my dancing career! Every Saturday there s a flea market. I come to dance. That way I make a little money and I get to work out. Our money is called the Rand. With two rands, I can buy a coke! After two hours of dancing I m exhausted. But I ve earned enough money to last the whole week. Winter is just coming to a close. It ll soon start to be hot again. The nights are cool because Johannesburg is in the mountains. I notice that someone is playing the drums. There s group of young dancers in the street. They re very good. If I dared, I d dance with them, but I m too shy. Oh, this beat is to die for! Here s an arts and crafts market. My aunt sells dolls here. I m sure she can tell me how to get back to my roots. I should go to Sterkfontein Caves. That s where the bones- -of the first humans were found. My dad used to work there. Great idea! Tomorrow I ll go to the caves. But today, I d like to spend a little of the money I worked so hard to earn. Rocky Street is the hip area. That s where my favourite store is. They sell funky jewellery. 4
For a few rands, I can buy these bracelets. I ll wear them tomorrow. Before going home, I ll also buy a bit of candy. Luckily, things don t cost much, because it s not easy to earn much. Haircutters don t own a salon. They do their cutting on the street. My dad says that this one is the best in the whole city! I don t know if he s the best or not, but he sure is the nicest. Today is the big day when I m going to dance, but first I ll visit the caves. They ve found hundreds of prehistoric bones here- -and they continue to discover things all the time. It s a very famous archaeological site. This part is forbidden to tourists, but everybody knows me here. Dr. Clark is a specialist on this site. He s the one who employed my dad. He always has fascinating stories to tell. Incredible! This skull is 2,5 million years old. Can you believe it? Maybe it s one of my relatives. I belong to an ancient people. These people didn t live in the caves. The tiger killed them and threw their bones in the caves. He knows everything, this professor. What a genius! I get dropped off by a bush taxi. It s a cheap way of getting around. This is where the party s going to be. There s still land that nobody lives on. We Zulus know how to party! Our ancestors were famous warriors. Now we re happy just to be the best dancers in the world. I stayed so long at the caves that I ve just enough time to get changed. I let myself be carried by the beat. I feel I m worthy to be a Zulu dancer. The echo bounces off the city s buildings. We ll dance all night long- -and I couldn t be happier! 5
