INDGANG FRA NILS ERICSONS PLATSEN access to railways access to railways 1a. KEEP WHOLE NILS ERICSONS BUS STATION Passages should be made to keep axes. NL terminal acts as a barrier to integrate RC with city center. Building a pavilion by south/western entrance would hide the entrance even more. Weak connection with Central Station. Clarify this connection (dotted black line) would create another intermediate, minor urban space. Design carefully. Terminal could be extended north. The corner must be designed to prevent Midtoppgangen area to become undefined space. 1b. KEEP WHOLE NILS ERICSONS BUS STATION - move building A passage should be made to keep northern visual line. NL terminal acts as a barrier to integrate RC with city center. A (high?) building could clarify the entrance to RC from Nils Ericson Platsen. Good connection with Spannmålsgatan. Terminal building would be preserved (architectural value). The corner must be designed to prevent Midtoppgangen area to become undefined space.
INDGANG FRA NILS ERICSONS PLATSEN access to railways access to railways 2a. KEEP NILS ERICSONS BUS STATION. REMOVE ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING. Passages should be made to keep axes. NL terminal acts as a barrier to integrate RC with city center. Weak connection with Central Station. Clarify this connection (dotted black line) would create another intermediate, minor urban space. Design carefully. A (high?) building could be built and clarify the entrance to RC from Nils Ericson Platsen. Terminal could be extended north. The corner must be designed to prevent Midtoppgangen area to become undefined space. 2b. KEEP NILS ERICSONS BUS STATION. REMOVE ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING. Passages should be made to keep axes. NL terminal acts as a barrier to integrate RC with city center. A (high?) building could be built and clarify the entrance to RC from Nils Ericson Platsen. Good connection with Spannmålsgatan. Terminal could be extended north. The corner must be designed to prevent Midtoppgangen area to become undefined space.
INDGANG FRA NILS ERICSONS PLATSEN access to railways access to railways 3a. MODIFY NILS ERICSONS BUS STATION Very strong axes and visual lines Pavilion / building(s) contribute to clarify entrance and strenghten axes. Good connection with Spannmålsgatan. Possibility of designing an urban space as transition. Good connection with Nils Ericson Platsen and city center. 3b. MODIFY NILS ERICSONS BUS STATION Strong axes and visual lines High building contribute to clarify entrance and strenghten axes. Good connection with Spannmålsgatan. Possibility of designing an urban space as transition. Intermediate urban space between Central Station and Nils Ericsons terminal. Weak connection with Central Station. Clarify this connection (dotted black line) would create another intermediate, minor urban space. Design carefully.
INDGANG FRA NILS ERICSONS PLATSEN tower tower lifted building access to railways access to railways 3c. MODIFY NILS ERICSONS BUS STATION Strong axes and visual lines Tower opposite Hotel Eggers help to frame Nils Ericson Torget. Good connection with Spannmålsgatan. Possibility of designing an urban space as transition. Good connection with Nils Ericson Platsen and city center. Weak connection with Central Station. Clarify this connection. 4. GÖTEBORG CITY - MASTERPLAN GROUP STRUKTURPLAN Tower opposite Hotel Eggers help to frame Niels Ericson platsen. High building with underpass contribute to clarify entrance to RC and strenghten axes. Good connection with Spannmålsgatan. Possibility of designing an urban space as transition. Wide urban space between Central Station and Nils Ericsons terminal. The size of Nils Ericson Platsen competes with the neigbouring Drottningstorget.

PLATSEN ALTERNATIV 1 (PLAN WS1) Main streets - passages - stay Important sight-lines Area to stay Location of cafés, restaurants etc. Shops Main street Passage Informal motion Cafés, restaurants etc Sight-lines Dense space generate a high + - density of people. No well-defined space to withdraw, take a break or observe the city life. No well-defined hierarchy of the street spaces. An urban space to mainly pass through. Area to stay + - One broken sightline, which leads further along the main street. Few sightlines. Long sightlines which may be perceived as monotone. Few viewpoints. Important viewpoint Sun and shadow Building heights; lower (light grey) / higher (dark grey) Sunny area Lower buildings Sun along the northern side. + - The most shaded area is also the largest space, meaning an ineffecient way of using the public spaces. Shaded area Relatively high density. + - Higher building heights along the northern side will probably create a claustrophibic space but with few qualities due to the small area of the square. Higher buildings
PLATSEN ALTERNATIV 2 Main streets - passages - stay Important sight-lines Natural location of cafés, restaurants etc. Area to stay safe-zone Important viewpoint Building of more significance Shops Main street Passage Informal motion Cafés, restaurants etc Sight-lines + - Variation and hierarchy in street spaces. A small pocket space to withdraw, observe, eat and drink. Creates one more busy and one more tranquil side. Area to stay Various sight lines and views. + - Important viewpoint Sun and shadow Building heights; lower (light grey) / higher (dark grey) Sunny area Lower buildings + - Sun at the pocket square. Suitable with shops along the shaded area. The shaded area is still larger than the sunny side. Shaded area Relatively high density. + - Higher buildings
PLATSEN ALTERNATIV 3 Main streets - passages - stay Important sight-lines Larger stay area Mix of stay and motion Smaller stay area Building of more significance? Shops Main street Passage Informal motion Cafés, restaurants etc Needs to be carefully architecturally designed Sight-lines + - Even larger pocket area. Creates two spaces in the same square; one smaller (right) and one larger (left). Area to stay Variation in sight lines (broken, + - straight, corners). The broken Southern facade needs to be carefully architecturally designed. Important viewpoint Sun and shadow Building heights; lower (light grey) / higher (dark grey) Sunny area Lower buildings The pocket square is also the + sunny side. - Shaded area Higher building heights on the + Southern side. - Higher buildings
PLATSEN ALTERNATIV 4 Main streets - passages - stay Important sight-lines Natural location of cafés, restaurants etc. Mix of stay and motion a larger safe-zone Important viewpoint Building of more significance Important viewpoint Building of more significance Shops Main street Passage Informal motion Cafés, restaurants etc Sight-lines + - Larger space close to the proportions of a classic square. Clear hierarchy in street spaces. Exit from the station to the center of the square (a well-recognized urban feature) Location of the South-Northern passage could be discussed and eventually be moved or completely removed. Area to stay + - Optimal location for a building with a more significant/public importance where the sightlines meet (East). Important viewpoint Sun and shadow Building heights; lower (light grey) / higher (dark grey) Sunny area Lower buildings Large and sunny square. + - Shaded area + - Higher buildings
