HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY 2005 SOFTBALL NOTES Hofstra (5-6, 0-0 CAA) Speedline Invitational March 10-13 Clearwater, FL Streaks, Stats and Storylines: The Pride has been idle for 13 days, due to the cancellation of last weekend s Fordham Invitational. Hofstra was last in action when it captured the championship of the Wilson Invitational at the University of South Florida. Sophomore catcher/outfielder Ashley Lane has gotten off to a fast start for the second year in a row, leading the Pride in hitting at.423. Hofstra is coming off a season when it reached the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament, falling to Stanford 3-1 to come one win shy of the Women s College World Series. The Pride was the lowest-seeded team to ever reach the NCAA Regional finals last year (#7). Nine of 10 starters return for the Pride this season, including eight who were named either All-Conference or All-Region. Hofstra also won its seventh straight postseason tournament title in 2004, capturing the CAA Championship with a 2-1, nineinning win over Delaware. The Pride has won the first three CAA Championships since the league was founded in 2002, and also won the last four while playing in the America East Conference. Senior pitcher/utility player Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL/Riverview HS) is making her final homecoming to the Tampa area. She is 3-3 so far this season with a 1.93 ERA, but 3-2 with a 0.77 ERA in Tampa. Senior pitcher/utility player Adrienne Clark had a streak of 31 straight shutout innings as a starter in the NCAA Tournament snapped in the regional finals against Stanford last year. It was the longest such streak since National Player of the Year Nancy Evans had a streak of 38 in a row for Arizona in 1998. What makes the streak even more remarkable is that Clark wasn t even recruited to be a pitcher. She has four NCAA Tournament wins in the last two years, all by 1-0 scores. Freshman Pam Dreslinski has fought her way into the Hofstra starting line-up, batting.400 in the early part of the 2005 season. Fellow freshman Courtney Oliver has also gotten off to a solid start in the pitching circle, picking up the win against 2004 Big Ten runner-up Illinois. Hofstra has 21 wins over nationally-ranked teams under Head Coach Bill Edwards. 2005 HOFSTRA SCHEDULE/RESULTS (5-6, 0-0 CAA) February USF/Wilson Invitational (Tampa, FL) 19 vs. Florida A&M L 1-3 19 vs. Stanford L 0-6 20 vs. Seton Hall L 2-3 20 vs. Jacksonville L 0-2 21 at South Florida W 5-4 (8) 23 at Florida Atlantic (DH) L 5-6, L 0-12 USF/ adidas Invitational (Tampa, FL) 25 vs. Illinois W 6-1 25 vs. Temple W 11-2 26 vs. Wagner W 3-2 26 at South Florida W 5-2 March Speedline Invitational (Clearwater, FL) 10 vs. Western Michigan 1 p.m. 11 vs. Purdue 11 a.m. 11 vs. Villanova 1 p.m. 12 vs. Oklahoma State 10 a.m. 12 Championship Round TBA Hofstra Tournament of Champions 19 SETON HALL 11:30 a.m. 19 MAINE 1:30 p.m. 20 MAINE 11:30 a.m. 20 SETON HALL 1:30 p.m. 23 MANHATTAN (DH) 2 p.m. Hofstra Invitational 25 IONA 9:30 a.m. 25 LONG ISLAND UNIV. 1:30 p.m. 26 LONG ISLAND UNIV. 11:30 a.m. 26 IONA 1:30 p.m. 30 at Rutgers 2 p.m. April 2 at George Mason (DH) 12 p.m. 3 at George Mason 11 a.m. 5 SYRACUSE (DH) 3 p.m. 9 at Delaware (DH) 12 p.m. 10 at Delaware 12 p.m. 13 at St. John s (DH) 3:30 p.m. 16 UNC WILMINGTON (DH) 1 p.m. 17 UNC WILMINGTON 11 a.m. 19 CONNECTICUT 4:30 p.m. 20 QUINNIPIAC (DH) 3:30 p.m. 23 TOWSON (DH) 12 p.m. 24 TOWSON 12 p.m. 27 LEHIGH (DH) 3:30 p.m. 30 JAMES MADISON (DH) 12 p.m. May 1 JAMES MADISON 12 p.m. 4 at Stony Brook (DH) 3 p.m. 7 at Drexel (DH) 11 a.m. 8 at Drexel 11 a.m. 12-15 CAA Championship TBA 19-22 NCAA Regionals TBA

About Head Coach Bill Edwards: Bill Edwards has completed 15 seasons as Hofstra University Head Softball Coach, and he has led the Pride to national prominence during that time. He is coming off the greatest single season in his career in 2004, when he led Hofstra to the NCAA Regional finals at Stanford University. His career record is currently 534-272-2. The Hofstra Softball program has also displayed consistent excellence over the last 15 years. Edwards and company have garnered seven NCAA Tournament appearances (1993, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004), two East Coast Conference Championships (1992 and 1994), four America East Championships (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001), three Colonial Athletic Association Championships (2002, 2003, 2004), a North Atlantic Conference Championship (1995) and an ECAC Championship (1993). In each of the last 13 years under Edwards, the Pride has won either a regular season or a postseason conference title, including seven straight tournament championships. Edwards, who has been a part of 15 straight winning seasons at Hofstra, also coached the Pride to a #21 ranking in the final 2004 NCAA Division I Softball Poll, and a #20 ranking in the final 1994 poll. He has also led the Pride to #1 rankings in the Northeast Region Poll in 1993, 1994, 1997 and 2000. Edwards has also been named the Regional Coach of the Year six times in his career (1993, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004). His players have also earned All-America honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association five times, including twice by Crystal Boyd (1993, 1994) and once apiece from Alicia Smith (2000), Lisa Ciavardini (2000) and Amanda Hallaway (2003). Edwards came to Hofstra from Commack High School where he coached softball for nine years. During his tenure at Commack, his teams compiled a 118-61 record and reached the Suffolk County Class A playoffs in seven of those nine years. Edwards and his wife, Janie, have two grown daughters, Shari, who played NCAA Division I softball at Northern Illinois University and coached at Hofstra, and Karen, a licensed practical nurse. Edwards received a bachelor's in physical education from Northern Michigan University in 1967 and a master's from the University at Stony Brook in 1975. The Edwards family resides in Nesconset, New York.
Pride Wins Adidas Invitational: Hofstra was last in action when it participated in the University of South Florida/adidas Invitational on Feb. 25-26, capturing the championship with a perfect 4-0 record. The Pride defeated Illinois 6-1, Temple 11-2, Wagner 3-2 and Rhode Island 5-2 before seeing its final scheduled game against South Florida rained out. The Pride was the only undefeated team in the field at 4-0. A Mirror Image: Hofstra s start to the 2005 season looks eerily similar to the way it began the 2004 campaign. The Pride struggled a little bit out of the gate, losing its first four before rallying from behind to defeat South Florida 5-4. It then had a tough doubleheader at Florida Atlantic, losing a 5-0 lead in the opening game and falling 6-5, and then suffering a 12-0 defeat in the nightcap. Hofstra then regrouped, and rattled off four straight wins to capture the adidas Invitational and return home with a 5-6 record. A year ago, the Pride started out 1-3 at its first tournament, dropped a doubleheader at Central Florida, then rattled off four straight wins before falling to South Florida in the championship game of the 2004 Best Western Invitational. It s record when returning home from that first trip was also 5-6. Stepping Up: Hofstra may have been a little bit upand-down on its first road trip, but it did step up against some pretty good competition. The Pride picked up wins over South Florida and Illinois, who were the preseason #21 and #22 teams in the nation in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, respectively. Illinois was the 2004 Big 10 Conference runner-up last season (behind Michigan) and reached the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. The Pride also picked up an 11-2 win over Temple, which was the 2004 Atlantic 10 Conference champion. The Fast Lane: Sophomore Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) has gotten off to a fast start to the 2005 season, the second straight year that she has jumped out of the gates quickly. Lane currently leads the Pride in hitting at.423 and was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 28. She belted a key tworun homer in the sixth inning to start the Pride s comeback from a 4-0 deficit in its 5-4 win over South Florida on Feb. 21. She also batted 4-for-6 in the Pride s two games on Feb. 25 at the adidas Invitational, going 2- for-3 in wins over Illinois and Temple. A year ago, Lane was also named the CAA Player of the Week at the exact same time of year, when she carried the Pride to a runner-up finish at the Best Western Invitational (which was also held at South Florida). She hit game-winning homers in wins over Maryland and Tulsa, and added a 4- for-4 effort in a win over N.C. State last season. The Accidental Pitcher: Hofstra senior Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) has been one of the best big-game pitchers in the country over the last two seasons. What makes her success even more remarkable is that she was not recruited to be a pitcher by Hofstra (or anyone else). Hofstra signed Clark as a utility player, and she played every position on the field except pitcher during fall practice her freshman season. However, that spring the Pride suffered some injuries to its pitching staff and needed someone for mop-up duty. Clark volunteered and made the most of her chances, throwing a combined 10.2 innings in six appearances without allowing a run (including three innings against eventual national champion California). She was then used as a closer early in her sophomore year (2003) and had a memorable appearance when she struck out the side against Washington including All-Americans Jaime Clark and Kristen Rivera. The Pride then converted her to a starter in April and she won her last 11 decisions, tying a school record. She has been a regular pitcher ever since, and has performed her best in the NCAA s (see below). Clark s NCAA Shutout Streak Revisited: Senior pitcher Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) has put together some remarkable pitching performances in the NCAA Tournament over the last two seasons. She had a streak of 28 straight shutout innings over the 2003 and 2004 Tournaments, which was broken in a relief appearance against Stanford last year. Counting only innings as a starter, her streak reached 31 innings, the longest such streak since former National Player of the Year Nancy Evans reached 38 for Arizona in the 1998 Tournament. The 28 straight overall shutout innings was barely eclipsed by Kristina Thorson of California, who had a streak of 29 innings (including seven in relief) snapped last season at the World Series. Below is a list of some of the top streaks from the last seven years: Longest NCAA Tournament Shutout Streaks (Since 1998) Name School Innings Year(s) Nancy Evans Arizona 38 1998 Kristina Thorson California 29 2003-04 Adrienne Clark Hofstra 28 2003-04 Cat Osterman Texas 27 2002-03 Amanda Freed UCLA 25 2001-02 Kelly Anderson California 23 2003 Jocelyn Forrest California 22 2002 Jamie Southern Fresno St. 21 2003 Jess van der Linden Florida St. 19 2004 Jennie Finch Arizona 19 2001 Courtney Dale UCLA 19 1999 Note: Counting only innings pitched as a starter, Clark s streak of 31 innings was the longest since Evans in 1998.
Clark Makes Homecoming: Senior pitcher Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL/Riverview HS) is making a homecoming to the Tampa area, where she played for four seasons at Riverview High School. Clark helped her Riverview team to a 2000 Conference Championship, and was a first-team all-conference selection and an honorable mention all-florida pick. Welcome Home: Senior pitcher Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) has had some memorable moments in her career when she has returned home to the Tampa area. This year, she has compiled a 3-2 record with an 0.77 earned run average in games played in Tampa, including a win in relief against South Florida. Last year, she put on a pitching clinic at the 2004 Best Western Invitational at the University of South Florida. She was used in relief in all five games in the tournament, throwing a combined 18 innings without allowing an earned run. She threw four shutout innings of relief to get a win over Maryland, two innings of shutout relief to get a win over Tulsa, and 4.1 innings of shutout relief to get the win over North Carolina State. She added a save in a victory over Temple and took a loss on an unearned run in a 4-3 defeat to South Florida in the championship game. As a sophomore in 2003, she came on in relief against nationally-ranked Washington and pitched two shutout innings, including striking out the side in one of them. In that inning, the three players she struck out included two All-Americans (Jamie Clark and Kristen Rivera). Big Game Adrienne: Senior pitcher Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL/Riverview) has made a habit of stepping up against top competition during her career. In her three seasons, she has thrown in 11 games against nationally-ranked teams. In those 11 appearances, she has allowed only six earned runs. As a freshman, she threw twice (for a combined 3.0 innings) against eventual national champion California and did not give up a run. As a sophomore, she threw 4.1 innings against Notre Dame, 2.0 innings against Washington, and a combined 5.2 innings in two games against Nebraska, all in relief, allowing just one unearned run (to Notre Dame). Last year, she earned a win with 1.1 innings of relief against Auburn and shut out Stanford 1-0 in the regional finals. She did allow three runs in relief to Stanford in an earlier game at the regionals, and surrendered three runs in the second game of the regional finals. This year, she has thrown against two teams which were ranked in the preseason NFCA coaches poll (but were unranked at the time the Pride played them). She threw three innings of shutout relief to get the win against preseason #21 South Florida, as well as 2.2 innings of shutout relief against preseason #22 Illinois. Home Run Hailey: Senior Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) had a breakthrough season a year ago that nearly put her in the Hofstra record books. After hitting a combined two homers in her first two seasons when she was battling various injuries, she exploded for 16 homers last spring. That left her just one shy of the single-season record set by Danielle Stewart in 2003 (see below). Prior to Stewart s explosion, the single-season school record had been only 10. Clark got her 16 th homer at the NCAA Regionals off of Stanford All-American Dana Sorenson, but didn t get many chances to go for #17. Stanford walked her four times in the regional finals, allowing her to set a school record for walks in a season with 33. Lane Sets Freshman HR Record: Sophomore outfielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) homered in both games of a doubleheader against Stony Brook on May 5, setting a new Hofstra record for homers by a freshman with nine. That eclipsed the previous mark of seven, set last year by Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY). She ended last year with 10, tying for third all-time (see below): Hofstra Single-Season Home Run Leaders 17 Danielle Stewart 2003 16 Hailey Clark 2004 10 Dana Bennett 1999 10 Ashley Lane 2004 9 Amanda Hallaway 2001 Better Use A Pencil: Hofstra s career home run list will likely undergo a lot of changes this spring as three current players rank in the top eight all-time at Hofstra with a fourth closing fast. Senior Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) leads the way with 18, tying her for fourth with former All-American Crystal Boyd. Junior Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) hit her 15 th career homer against Temple on Feb. 25 to move her into a tie for sixth, while senior Stefanie Kenney (Malvern, PA) is one behind in eighth. Ulrich has hit seven in each of her first two seasons, while Kenney has a career-best of six set in 2002. Sophomore Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY), meanwhile, hit 10 as a freshman last year and added her 11 th against South Florida on Feb. 21. Instant Impact: Hofstra returned a veteran team this year, including nine starters and its top two pitchers. As a result, it appeared tough for the three members of the Pride s freshman class to have an immediate impact. However, freshman Pam Dreslinski (Kingsville, OH) and Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) both had key roles in the Pride s adidas Invitational championship on Feb. 25-26. Dreslinski batted.625 (5-8) at the tournament, including 4-for-6 with three RBI in the Pride s two wins on Feb. 25 against 2004 Big 10 runner-up Illinois and 2004 Atlantic 10 Champion Temple. Oliver, meanwhile, earned the win in Hofstra s 6-1 win over Illinois, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing only three hits and one run. The Home Run Queens: In 2003, Hofstra shattered the school record for homers in a season with 50, easily breaking the old mark of 29. After the graduation of the school's all-time career home run leader (Amanda Hallaway) and the school's single season home run leader (Danielle Stewart), many people thought that the Pride's success with the long ball would take a step backwards. That wasn t the case, though, as the Pride belted 43 homers last season for its secondhighest ever total. Speed Kills: Hofstra wasn't entirely dependent on its home run power, as it has also utilized its speed at the top of the line-up. Juniors Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) and Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) combined for 31 stolen bases last year in 37 attempts, with Wambold going 16-19 and Sweeney 15-18. Those rank as two of the top four single-season stolen base totals in school history. Hofstra Single-Season Stolen Base Leaders 19 Robyn Trezise 1995 1 6 Lisa Wambold 2004 15 Laura Sweeney 2004 15 Jen Pawol 1998 13 Robyn Trezise 1994 12 Lisa Wambold 2003 12 LaMeka Anderson 1998 12 Christine Moran 2001 12 Heather Brousseau 2002 Thieves Like To Work In Pairs: Junior second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) and junior shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) set a school record for stolen bases in a season by a pair of Hofstra teammates with 31, eclipsing the old record set by Robyn Trezise (19) and Chris Aigotti (11) in 1995. Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra earned a big advantage when it won the regular season CAA Championship and earned the right to host the conference tournament. The Pride went 22-4 at home last year and is now 39-4 in its last 43 home games, dating back to the 2003 season. Hofstra also has a record of 31-2 at home against CAA teams in its three seasons in the league (including 10-1 in tournament games), and is 41-2 in its last 43 home games against conference opponents, dating back to the 2001 season in the America East. Both losses in that stretch came last season to Delaware, a 4-2, 10-inning defeat on April 10 and a 3-2 loss in the opening round of the CAA Tournament on May 13. Last Year Revisited: Hofstra opens up the 2005 season after a dramatic NCAA Tournament run in 2004, which saw the Pride fall one win shy of reaching the Women s College World Series. Hofstra, though, very nearly didn t even qualify for the postseason. It clinched the regular season CAA championship on the very last day of with a narrow 4-3 win over James Madison, earning the right to host the conference tournament. It then dropped a 3-2 game to Delaware in the opening round of the CAA Tournament, and had to fight its way back through the loser s bracket The Pride trailed Towson 4-2 in the fifth of an elimination game, but rallied back for a 7-5 win and held on when the Tigers left the bases loaded in the seventh. It then defeated James Madison 3-0 to reach the championship round when the Dukes also left the bases loaded in the seventh. Hofstra then defeated Delaware 2-0 in the first game of the championship round, and knocked off the Blue Hens 2-1 in nine innings in the second game to win the CAA title. Once it made it safely to the NCAA s, the Pride then proceeded to go on a dramatic run, defeating #12 Auburn 1-0 in nine innings, then knocking off Southern Illinois 1-0 in 12 innings. After falling to #7 Stanford 7-1, Hofstra earned its way into the regional finals with a 3-1 win in a rematch with Southern Illinois. It then knocked off Stanford 1-0 to force a second and deciding game for the right to go to the Women s College World Series. Stanford scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth and held off a seventh-inning Pride rally to win 3-1 and end Hofstra s Cinderella run. The Pride became the lowest seeded team (#7) to ever reach a regional final. Pride vs. Ranked Teams: Hofstra has defeated 21 nationally-ranked teams under Head Coach Bill Edwards, dating back to the 1992 season. A year ago, the Pride picked up both of its wins over ranked teams in the NCAA Tournament, knocking off #12 Auburn and #7 Stanford. Stanford was the second-highest ranked team that Hofstra has ever defeated, behind only a win over #1 UCLA in 2000.
Another Banner Season: The 2004 Hofstra Softball team captured both the regular season and postseason CAA titles for the third year in a row. Remarkably, it marked the 13th straight season in which the Pride has won either a regular season or a postseason league title. Hofstra won the conference crown in the East Coast Conference in 1992, an ECAC title in 1993, and an East Coast Conference tournament title in 1994. Hofstra joined the North Atlantic Conference (now the America East) in 1995. The Pride finished in first place in every season in the America East except its final one, when it ended up a game behind Boston University in the 2001 standings. However, the Pride bounced back to win the 2001 America East tournament with a 4-3, 11-inning win over Towson. Here is a chart of the Pride s conference regular seasons and tournament finishes since 1992: Hofstra Conference Championships 1992 East Coast Conference Tournament 1993 ECAC Tournament 1994 East Coast Conference Tournament 1995 North Atlantic Regular Season & Tournament 1996 America East Regular Season 1997 America East Regular Season 1998 America East Regular Season & Tournament 1999 America East Regular Season & Tournament 2000 America East Regular Season & Tournament 2001 America East Tournament 2002 CAA Regular Season & Tournament 2003 CAA Regular Season & Tournament 2004 CAA Regular Season & Tournament Hofstra In Conference: Hofstra has been remarkably consistent in league play over the last decade since joining the North Atlantic Conference in 1995. Hofstra has had at least a.750 winning percentage in league play in every season since 1995, while finishing first in nine of 10 years. It s wining percentage in conference since 1995 is an impressive.842 (see chart below). Hofstra Conference Finishes Year Rec. Place Tourn. In fact, a remarkable 12 different players were honored in the postseason last year, either on the All-CAA or All-Mid Atlantic Region teams or on the All-Tournament teams at the CAA or the NCAA Regionals. Hofstra had nine players honored as All-Colonial Athletic Association, including six first-team selections. The Pride also had five All-Region selections, including shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) who was not on the All-CAA teams. Sophomore pitcher Amy Belonick (Terryville, NY) was one of five Pride players named to the All-CAA Tournament team, while junior outfielder Lisa Torres (Farmingville, NY) became the 12 th Pride player honored when she was chosen to the NCAA All- Regional team at Stanford.
