Staden hade 1999 7,4 miljoner invånare. Själva storstadsområdet, som sträcker sig in i grannstaterna New Jersey och Connecticut, har ca 19,5 miljoner invånare. New York omfattar fem olika stadsdelar; Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx och Staten Island. Traditionellt har New York alltid varit USA:s främsta immigrationshamn och staden är troligen den mest kosmopolitiska i världen - även om antalet invånare som är födda utomlands numera är betydligt mindre än tidigare. Den judiska befolkningen uppgår till drygt 2,5 miljoner, men många här är också av t.ex. italienskt, ryskt, polskt eller asiatiskt ursprung. SCRIPT: I LOVE MY CITY: NEW YORK Five A.M. is the best time to see New York. The air isn t overwhelmed with smoke and the city slowly awakens under the first rays of the sun. Five A.M. is also Boris s favorite time. He can look at the wild duck families as much as he wants. Boris is my dog. He s never eaten a wild duck, but I bet he d like to try it. Anyway, he s more of an early-riser than I am... My name s Natalia, I m twelve and I live on a houseboat in Manhattan. Everything is quiet and peaceful here. Every day, around seven A.M., I take Boris for a walk. We always see lots of joggers running along the banks of Hudson. In America, lots of people go running before going to work. Sometimes I have to be careful that the joggers don t trip on Boris s leash. Today is a big day for me. I ve got an important meeting that I just can t miss. I ve been invited to the CNN television studio to watch them record one of their programs. My dream is to become a announcer! When I leave the houseboat, I ve got to turn the water main off. It would be a shame to sink because of a leaky pipe on board! To get about I take the subway. Believe me; It s not as dangerous as people say it is. At least not in the daytime! The subway here is awesome, there s no driver. I always go up front, it makes me feel as if I m driving the train. New York is the media capital of the world. Lots of programs recorded here are broadcast worldwide. And my dream is to work in TV! When I listen to the announcers, I m always amazed at how natural they sound! It s the job I really want to do. See there, beside the cameraman, there s a script rolling on a machine. That s a teleprompter. It s there just in case the announcer s mind goes blank... When I came out of the studio I was walking on air. You see, I m already training to become an announcer. In New York, there s a television studio just for kids. It s in the Children s Museum and I go there whenever I can. To get to the studio you have to go through the museum, which is full of collections of toys and things. Some are ordinary but others are really unusual. Every time I walk by the windows I see something new... My favorite display is the Barbie doll collection. I have to admit I ve got about ten myself... But that s nothing compared to this! I also like the collection of the New York cabs. I like our big yellow ones the best. When I was little I used to call them the big bees. 3
There are all sorts of collections, they ve even got displays of Coke bottles and gumball machines. It s a good thing they re all behind glass cases. The children s TV studio is exactly like a real studio. The hardest thing is to read the script while you re looking straight at the camera. I m not very good at it but I m improving all the time... And that s the most important thing for a New Yorker: to get better and become the best. Since I ve got a bit of spare time, I m going shopping on Canal Street in Lower Manhattan. It s the Chinese area and it s known as Chinatown. I like the atmosphere. And you find the best fish and vegetables there. New York is even more beautiful at night. There are bright lights and neon signs and people in the streets. Broadway is full of theaters and music halls. The stream of cars never stops. There are so many cabs that you re always sure to find one. Tonight I m allowed to go and listen to my father play. He s a jazz musician and he works in nightclubs and restaurants in Manhattan. He plays the trombone and he s really good! Jazz is the soul of New York. If people nowadays call New York the Big Apple, it s because back in the 20s it was the place all the jazz musicians wanted to play. They used to say There s plenty of apples on the tree, but when you play in New York, that s the Big Apple. So that s how New York got it s nickname! And my father s proud to be playing in the Big Apple. He s going to play most of the night. But I have to go back home at ten o clock. There s jazz music in my head as I fall asleep. It s a change from the hard rock! It all depends on your taste, doesn t it?... To begin the day, I go roller skating in Central Park, which is a big park right in the middle of Manhattan. As a skater, I know I ve got a lot to learn... In the middle of Central Park, there s a zoo. I m going there today for the first time, because I ve got an assignment to do about polar bears. The polar bear in the zoo isn t very white, and he looks sort of sad too. Maybe he doesn t like living near all these skyscrapers. While I m here, I may as well go see the monkeys. But they re so quiet. Too quiet for me. My favourite animals are the ones that live in the water, like seals. Maybe that s why I live on a houseboat myself. I like otters too. They re so graceful... I wind up the morning watching the roller skaters on Washington Square. When I see how good they are, I feel discouraged. There are some really cute boys skating there. That s why I practice hard! So I can go skate with them! But it s not going to be easy... If only they d give me some lessons! This afternoon I m leaving the island of Manhattan by ferry. Oh! I forgot to tell you Manhattan is an island, and that it s connected to the rest of New York by bridges. When we pass in front of the Statue of Liberty, I think of the millions of emigrants who came to America by ship: it was the first thing they saw here and they must have been really impressed!... 4
We get off at Ellis Island, where more than twelve million emigrants landed early in the 20th century. Among them were my grandparents. My grandmother has often told me how it was when she arrived at Ellis Island, so I wanted to see for myself. My grandparents wanted to get away from persecution and poverty. They were so poor that they had to travel as steerage passengers, and when they arrived, they had to transit by this huge clearing center. My grandmother and grandfather were questioned here along with five thousand other people who came through the same day as them. My grandmother told me she was scared stiff they wouldn t let her stay in the USA. When the immigration officials finally passed them, they wept for joy in the middle of this huge room. And when I think about their amazing adventure, the tears come to my eyes too. The thing I love about New York is the atmosphere in the streets. You feel as if anything could happen here. This afternoon I m going shopping: I ve got to buy a birthday present for my friend Cindy. The best place to go to is F.A.O. Schwartz, the biggest toy store in New York. It s the oldest too: it s been there for 131 years! You sure find anything you want there. All you have to do is rummage around! If I was rich, I d clean the place out: there are so many things I d like to have. I ll come back when I m on TV. I love New York, but there are times when the city seems to weigh me down. I know I m big for my age, but I feel microscopic with all these skyscrapers around me. When I get that feeling, I ve got a surefire remedy: I go to the top of the Empire State Building and look down at the city. All of a sudden I seem to be on top of the world and the big buildings are all below me. I m bigger than them all! New York is at my feet, more beautiful than ever. I hope I ll go on living here a long time... 5
