Young People s Experiences of the Good Leisure Time Project Three Videos: http://vapari.munstadi.fi/esittelymateriaaleja/
The Aims of the Project Bringing the culture of having hobbies to the young people who do not inherit it from their family. Helping the young people to move around in the Helsinki area and to be aware of the possibilities that the city offers them. In practice: youth leaders working at schools, helping the young in finding their strengths and interests as a group and as individuals. Emphasis on leisure time and finding new hobbies. Gathering information about the leisure time s effects on young people s well-being, learning and upper secondary level educational choices. Developing and implementing new research-based operational models that enable close cooperation between youth work and schools.
The Young People Participating in the Project Five schools in different parts of Helsinki. Six target classes and six comparison classes. Each youth worker works with two target classes. The same 170 students participate in the project throughout the period of secondary school. Participation is voluntary. 50% of the pupils are from immigrant backgrounds. Approximately 30 native languages.
Youth Leaders Job Description Helping the young to find new hobbies and other leisure time activities. Spending leisure time with the young, organising trips, going to hobbies together, etc. Extra resource at the local youth centre (when necessary) At schools: lessons in social and emotional skills and group dynamics. Organising activities and chatting with the young between school lessons, participating in the school trips, theme days and celebrations, organising group activities. Moving around in the area, taking youth work where the young hang out. Supporting the young in taking care of their daily affairs, applying for jobs, etc. Flexibility: adapting to the context.

RESULTS Feedback from the Pilot Schools According to the principals and the teachers of the target classes the project has -helped young people in starting new hobbies -increased friendships among the students -increased the courage of the students to try new things and to move around in the city area -increased the students well-being and good behavior at school The youth leaders were seen as having found their niche in the school community and becoming the third guardian in addition to the school and parents. All pilot schools were eager to continue using the Good Leisure Time operational model also after the the project.
Integrating Effects For many muslim girls from conservative backgrounds the project has been the only opportunity to have hobbies. Usually the parents of these girls do not allow them leisure time activities outside of the school and home. However, because the project s activities were seen by the parents as a part of the school s activity, the girls were permitted to participate. Part of the immigrant parents do not speak or understand any Finnish. Also, they do not know the possibilities that the city of Helsinki offers to the young people. Threfore they often cannot advise their children in these issues. This makes the integration of the young people in the Finnish society more difficult. Youth leaders can help the immigrant youth in finding information, understanding the Finnish culture and integrating in the society. According to the teachers, the project has also increased friendships and common activities among the immigrant and other students in the class.
