Designdialoger. Design gennem samarbejde = Design for forandring.

Design Dialogues in Early Phases of Building Projects -Methods and tools for collaborative workplace design. -Describes the development of a collaborative design based method in the early phases of building projects - design dialogues. From Research to Practice
From Democracy to Quality. 1976 2001
General standards for Health Care buildings are often questioned today.
This is due to the present rapid changes in society and business standards are often outdated already when they are formulated. In the Health Care systems the fast progress in medicine and new therapies, new care processes and new patient/consumer demands are the driving forces for change.
New building commission has to be tailored according to its specific context. Has to incorporate cutting edge knowledge and evidence based design. Focus turns from standard solutions to process design. Care professionals are the most important carriers of updated knowledge. This means that they needs to be actively involved in the design process.
Design method Design commissions are distinguished by that you seek a valid solution in a complex situation where many parameters and interests are weighted together Wicked problems. You get hold of the problem by developing solutions (before all prerequisites are identified). Solutions are tested against the problem and are analysed/tested/evaluated and then condensed in an successive process.
Design dialogues Programming through design programming is a design process. The purpose of the design dialogues is to support the formulation of goals and identification of needs as well as to generate ideas as input to the architectural design process. Collaborative design involving multi-professional teams. It is a workshop-driven method, which includes the active collaboration between client, customers, users and the architect.
Design dialogues process management Design dialogues carry out preliminary design in a iterative process with a repertoire of activities. In each activity you chose different tools and procedures from the tool box. 1. Design the Process 2. Map existing conditions. Formulate Goals 3. Inspire! Build Visions 4. Identify Functions and Relations 5. Collaborative Design - Develop Solutions Together 6. Architectural Design 7. Evaluate Alternatives 8. Establish Consensus Make Decisions
1. Design the Process Every project has its own unique presets make a tailored selection from the tool kit. Make roles and decision lines clear. Sort out the Organization scheme. Establish workgroups, program group and steering group.
2. Map existing conditions - Formulate Goals Support awareness. Map silent knowledge Video/photo-documentation of the existing workplace
3. Inspire. Build Visions Good examples, new technology, organisation, ways of working...
4. Identify functions and relations Group work with digital images Tetra Pak Business Support, ReFlex
5. Collaborative Design develop solutions together Implement rules of the game. Build conceptual layouts. Which functions and qualities should we integrate? How should they relate. Logistics, connections?
6. Architectural Design Develop/interpret/re-work conceptual layouts into architectural sketches. Visualize. Video
7. Evaluate Alternatives Comments, discussions. More homework to the architect.
8. Establish Consensus Make Decisions! Synthesis layout

Operation
Final remarks It is often more time efficient to work in a more designerly way than traditional methods in the early phases of building projects. It is stable agreed solutions don t change much when entering new more detailed phases. This means low risk in projects.
It is a way to share the designers/architect methods and tools with the customer and unskilled users. You let the customers and users show you what the want instead of trying to tell you and write it down. And in their effort to do so, they have to jointly agree upon what to show you. It is a fun and engaging way to work.
