Abstract. Much has been written about children's literature and picture books. Despite that, it is still hard to define what a picture book really is. All depends on the relation between words and pictures: whether the pictures repeat that which has been written in the text, or whether they appear without any textual references. This paper deals with the relation between words and pictures in Tiina Nunnally's English translation of Pippi Långstrump from 2007 which is abundant with illustrations, whereas the original Swedish version of Astrid Lindgren's famous book contains almost no pictures. Many aspects such as colour, size, font, layout, etc. are discussed in order to assess the importance of these aspects in illustrated children's books. Central theories in this study are those of Nikolajeva and Scott about how picture books work, as well as Doonan's and Nodelman's theories about picture books. Doonan focuses on pictures, while Nodelman concentrates more on the relation between words and illustrations. Nikolajeva and Scott's analysis is an important starting point for this paper because of their extensive comments about the different elements that should be present in such a book. Doonan's and Nodelman's theories deal primarily with the importance of pictures. Other aspects such as size and colour appear also in their analysis. The analysis of these elements in Nunnally's version of Pippi Långstrump result in the observation that aspects such as colour, size, font, etc. appear to be very important. It is clear that the illustrations are often adapted to the text and that there is a continuous interaction between words and pictures.
