Being a Bison What it means to BE A BISON... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow s studies, and if you give a boy a well developed body his brain will get the benefit of it. Christy Mathewson in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll Member Andrew Brouse The term student-athlete signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime. 2008 Patriot League Champions 1

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. According to federal data released in the fall of 2006 by the NCAA and reported on by the Associated Press and The Chronicle of Higher Education, Bucknell s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1996-97 and 1990-2000 academic years. Bucknell was one of four institutions to graduate at least 90 percent of its student-athletes who enrolled during that fouryear period. Bucknell posted a 93-percent rate, followed by Davidson (90 percent), Duke (90 percent) and Georgetown (90 percent). Bucknell has claimed 112 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91. That is more than twice the next-highest total. A total of 344 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 244 made the Dean s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2008. 24 of Bucknell s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2008. In addition to the 117 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 263 honorees over the same span, including a school-record 20 in 2006-07. With five more Patriot League championships in, Bucknell has now earned 70 crowns in 18 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 90 conference players of the year, 78 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 456 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf. Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents Cup, signifying the league s all-sports champion, 14 times in the 18-year history of the affiliation, including 10 of the last 11 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men s and women s Cup standings in, when the Bison teams won five Patriot League titles. It was the 11th straight year and the 14th time overall, that the Bison took home the women s title. In, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women s cross country, women s indoor track & field, women s basketball, women s rowing and baseball. Additionally, the women s soccer squad collected its second consecutive regular-season crown. Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections. A major element in ensuring Bucknell s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility s layout.

Gillian Nordquist Justin Wolf Lauren Stoller Academic All-America Jason Buursma Kelly Hoffman Mark Angelo Shannon Pitsch Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic Brown Bag Luncheons, thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling. Much is made of the fact college football teams that participate in bowl games have a month or more of additional practices as they prepare for their postseason contest. Those sessions serve as preparation for the bowl game as well as the first step toward a successful season the following fall. The Bucknell baseball team is in that fortunate situation this year, having played a school-record 56 games in 2008 as it claimed the Patriot League Tournament title and won an impressive 7-0 NCAA Tournament matchup with powerhouse Florida State behind the pitching of then-senior Mathew Wilson. The Bison played 11 of those games after May 1 and went 8-3 during that postseason stretch, gaining valuable experience during that time. Last year s postseason run gave the younger guys who are now the cornerstone of this year s team a chance to work and develop, and as a coaching staff we saw a lot of progress in the players, commented Bucknell head coach Gene Depew, who enters his 28th season just two wins shy of 500 in his career. Final exams ended in early May and then we got to concentrate solely on baseball. The four weekends we got to play in succession gave us a chance to make progress and that is going to carry over into this year. While many current Bison performed well last year, six starters departed, leaving a number of holes to fill. The largest of those holes resembles a crater as five-time All-Patriot League player Jason Buursma graduated and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals last June. The most decorated player in program history, Buursma, who led the team in hitting and led the Patriot League in ERA, is listed among the top 10 on 17 Bison career lists and 10 single-season lists. Despite the loss of Buursma and his classmates, Bucknell returns three of the top six hitters from last season s squad that became the first No. 4 seed in Patriot League history to win the postseason tournament. Additionally, half of the team s starting rotation returns with another year of experience. Our goal is to take the potential we have and make progress throughout the year so we can compete for the (Patriot League) title at the end of the year, said Depew, who has guided the Bison to four Patriot League titles since 1996. That is pretty much what happened for us last year. PITCHING STAFF Buursma and Wilson will surely be missed, but the sophomore class is ready to step in and fill the gaps on the young pitching staff. Sophomores Eric Jarrett and Dylan Seeley started nearly half of the team s games on the mound and combined for nine victories as rookies in 2008. Both also earned starting nods in the NCAA Tournament and should move up in the rotation in 2009. Both Eric and Dylan showed great potential last year, said Depew. Dylan, especially, this fall looked like he has made progress and I have high expectations for them. Additionally, Depew sees fellow second-year hurlers Trey Frahler and Daniel Hart challenging for spots in the rotation. Frahler earned three starts last year and came on in relief 15 times, while Hart started once in his eight appearances. Trey and Dan are both tall, hard-throwing right-handers who work hard, praised Depew. We are hoping one, if not both, of those guys can step up. Senior Sean Driscoll, who along with classmate Chris Yamaguchi missed 2008 due to Tommy John surgery, could be the veteran leader in the rotation. Sean was a contributor for us as a sophomore and he continued to show improvement throughout the fall as he got more comfortable, said Depew. I think Sean could step up and be one of our starters. Yamaguchi, senior Jimmy Murphy and junior Michael Dallanegra will provide a veteran presence in the bullpen, while junior Andrew Clarke has the ability to start or relieve. That experienced quartet has 60 career appearances to its credit, with most coming out of the bullpen. Jack Boehm, a right-hander with good potential, and Cal Tracy are the two pure pitchers from the freshman class and they will add depth to the solid pitching staff. A number of other first-year players will split time between other positions and pitcher. 4 B.J. LaRosa CATCHER Much like many other positions on the diamond, Depew will be working in a new starter at catcher. However, he is very comfortable with that idea given the veterans at that position. Senior Zachary Brown and junior B.J. LaRosa will likely battle for the starting position, while junior Kevin Drozin will be 2008 Patriot League Champions in the mix as well. Brown, who hit.413 in 46 at bats last year in a reserve role behind Shawn Hirsch, and LaRosa, who had a pair of doubles among his seven hits, are a little stronger offensively and could also DH, while Drozin s defense is slightly ahead of his bat. Additionally, freshman Scott Reed is talented and could earn some playing time. The experience at catcher is a bonus, explained Depew. It is always good to replace a very good player with upperclassmen who have been in the system and have some experience. It s not like we are starting over. FIRST BASE Mark Angelo played in a Bucknell record 56 games at first base last year, leaving very little time for others to Season Outlook Ben Yoder get on the field at that position. This year, sophomore Doug Shribman, who will likely concentrate on playing the field rather than splitting between the mound and first base like he did as a freshman, will likely begin the season as the starter. He appeared in just three games at first base a year ago. Freshmen Ryan Ebner, who is a member of the Bison men s basketball team as well, and Russell Seidell are both two-way players who will see time on the mound as well as at first base. MIDDLE INFIELD Bucknell should be very strong up the middle this year with the return of juniors Ben Allen (SS) and Ben Yoder (2B). Both are two-year starters who were All-Patriot League selections last year. Allen hit.312 and scored a teamhigh 46 runs from his leadoff position in the batting order, while Yoder s.318 average was second-best among returning players. If you had to choose positions where you have experience, it would probably be those two, explained Depew. They work very well together. Both are talented offensive and defensive players and we are pleased to have them. Senior Hunter George, who hit.308 in limited at bats last year and could also DH, will back up Yoder at second base, while freshman Alex Cillo, who will also pitch and possesses possibly the best arm on the team, will play behind Allen at short. THIRD BASE Bret Sokirka, a former middle infielder who played second base in place of an injured Yoder during much of the postseason last year, will move to third base this season to replace two-year starter Ed Rubbo. The senior scored 13 runs and drove in eight more in limited playing time. As a senior and an everyday player for the first time, Bret should be set to have a solid year, predicted Depew. Sophomore Billy Lupo and freshman David Duffett will also see playing time at third base. OUTFIELD Senior Dane Grandizio, who like Allen and Yoder was an All-Patriot League selection last year, is one of two returning starters in the outfield along with junior Andrew Brouse. Grandizio, a center fielder, hit.333, led the team with 13 stolen bases and was tied for third with 35 runs batted in last year when he appeared in 51 games. Dane has all the tools, commented Depew. He put it together at the end of last season and we have high expectations for this year. He is the fastest guy on the team and might be the fastest in the Patriot League. He should hit somewhere near the top of the order and should be one of the keys as to how we go offensively. Brouse is expected to hold down right field after hitting.292 with three home runs and 20 RBIs last spring. He is the lone returning starting position player to not earn All-Patriot League honors in 2008, but could have those honors in his sight with a solid year. We are fortunate that Andrew was pretty much an everyday player for us last year, said Depew. He had a very good year and an excellent summer. He probably has the strongest throwing arm in the outfield. Senior Andrew Loucks, who hit.320 in 25 at bats last year, gives Bucknell another experienced outfielder, while Drew Constable, who drove in the winning run at Army in the clinching game of the Patriot League semifinal round, and Joseph DeMarzo are a pair of talented sophomores who could earn playing time at any of the outfield positions. Freshmen Bobby Donato, a native of nearby Williamsport, Mark Figgie, Matt Lamore and Gerald Runyan will also battle for spots in the outfield. Figgie and Lamore should also see some time on the mound.

#33 GENE DEPEW HEAD COACH 28TH SEASON BUCKNELL 71 498-572-7 Guided by three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, Gene Depew, the Bucknell baseball team annually ranks near the top of the Patriot League and is coming off its third Patriot League Tournament title in the last eight years. In the past 12 seasons, Depew has helped the Bison to a top-two finish in the Patriot League standings seven times. During that span, they have made four NCAA Tournament appearances (1996, 2001, 2003 and 2008). Since 1996, Bucknell has broken the 20-win plateau 10 times, including three 30-win campaigns, and Depew s career winning percentage of.466 (498-572-7) is the best at Bucknell since William Lane s career ended in 1957. Last spring Depew guided the Bison to perhaps the biggest win in program history when they defeated No. 4 nationally ranked Florida State 7-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was just the fourth time a Patriot League team won an NCAA postseason game. On an individual level, Depew has won the Patriot League Coach of the Year award three times (1993, 1996, 2003), has had three Patriot League Pitchers of the Year (Mike Tomko, 1996; Mike Anders, 1998; Kevin Miller, 2003), three Players of the Year (Kevin Silverman, 1996; Frank Fresconi, 2000; Jason Buursma, 2008) and two Rookies of the Year (Phil Futrick, 2003; Ben Yoder, 2007). Depew has also led 53 student-athletes to 81 Patriot League first- and second-team accolades. In the classroom, Bucknell baseball has had 11 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans since 1992, including Jason Buursma, who was named to the first team in 2008. A 1971 Bucknell graduate, Depew is entering his 28th season as the Bison s head coach and has the longest tenure of any coach in Bucknell baseball history. He has directed his teams to 498 victories, nearly four times the amount of any coach in school history. To honor that, Bucknell s baseball field was renamed Depew Field during the 2003 season. A native of Mifflintown, Pa., Depew was the recipient of both bachelor and master of science degrees in education from Bucknell. Football was the first sport for which Depew was a coach, as he oversaw the Bison gridders defensive line from 1972-1992. It was in 1974 that Depew began his current occupation, first as an assistant coach for the baseball team until 1981, after which he assumed the lead role. As an undergraduate, Depew was a standout football player for the Bison. He was a three-year letterwinner and co-captained the squad in 1970. He played every position on the defensive line, and was described by his head coach as being as hard-nosed as they come. He has excellent speed and size for a defensive lineman. In 1969, he was named All-Middle Atlantic Conference honorable mention. Depew has two brothers who also played football for Bucknell, Terry ( 73) and Alvin ( 81). Gene and his wife, Debbie, reside in Mifflinburg and are the parents of a daughter, Erin, a 2006 graduate of Bucknell, and a son, William, a member of the Class of 2010. #34 SCOTT HEATHER ASSISTANT COACH FIFTH SEASON ARKANSAS 03 Former University of Arkansas pitcher Scott Heather begins his fifth season as pitching coach for the Bison. Under Heather s direction, Bucknell s pitching staff has posted an ERA of under 4.50 three times in the last four years. The staff had a 4.30 ERA in 2006, marking the team s lowest since 1983 (4.10). During his tenure, Heather has tutored a number of outstanding pitchers, including recent graduates Jason Buursma and Mathew Wilson. Those two 2008 graduates have claimed the last two Patriot League ERA titles, while Buursma earned a pair of First Team All-Patriot League selections as a relief pitcher. Wilson, who was the 2007 Patriot League ERA champion, was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in 2008, broke the school record for career shutouts (5) and pitched a complete-game shutout against nationally ranked Florida State in the NCAA Tournament. Heather has seen a pitcher from the Bison staff selected in each of the last three Major League Baseball Drafts. Buursma was drafted in 2007 (42nd round by Seattle Mariners) and 2008 (25th round by St. Louis Cardinals), while Kyle Walter was selected in the 18th round of the 2006 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. Heather worked closely with Walter during his days in Orange and Blue to transition from position player to pitcher. Coaching/Support Staff Prior to joining the Bison, Heather served as an assistant coach for Arkansas- Fort Smith from 1999 to 2004. Heather began his playing career at Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz., where he was MVP of the 1996 team that was ranked third nationally, before moving on to Arkansas. Heather lettered for the Razorbacks as a pitcher in 1997 and 1998, then became a student assistant in 1999 when Arkansas won its first Southeastern Conference championship. He also pitched professionally for the Duluth Dukes of the Northern League in 1998. BEN KRENTZMAN ASSISTANT COACH THIRD SEASON BUCKNELL 03 Ben Krentzman, a 2003 Bucknell graduate, begins his third season as an assistant coach this spring. Krentzman spent four years as an outfielder for the Bison from 2000-03 and saw action in 100 career games. During his playing career, Krentzman was a part of two of Bucknell s Patriot League championship squads (2001 and 2003) that earned trips to the NCAA Tournament. He returned in 2008 as an assistant coach. Upon graduation, Krentzman spent two years working for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as the team s group account executive. In 2005, he served as an assistant baseball coach at Clearwater High School, his alma mater, in Clearwater, Fla., and helped the team capture a conference title. JIM GULDEN ASSISTANT COACH THIRD SEASON CLEVELAND STATE 05 Lewisburg native Jim Gulden enters his third season as an assistant coach for Bucknell and is responsible for working with the Bison catchers while also serving as the team s game day bullpen coach. Gulden was drafted out of Lewisburg High School, where he graduated in 2000, by the Montreal Expos in the 47th round. He attended Virginia Tech and was a member of the Hokies baseball squad for two years before transferring to Cleveland State, where he graduated in 2005 with a degree in communications. Gulden previously served as head junior varsity baseball coach and varsity assistant coach at Lewisburg High School. ROBERT CURTIS STRENGTH & CONDITIONING ST. LAWRENCE 58 The Bucknell baseball team s strength and conditioning is in the hands of Robert Curtis, a former Bucknell football coach, and strength and conditioning coordinator Jerry Shreck. They have at their disposal Bucknell s top-notch 15,000 square foot Krebs Family Fitness Center, which opened during the 2002-03 school year. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams will employ explosion techniques with power bands and pliometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition, as opposed to training for bodybuilding. 18 ERIC JUNGE 99 DRAFTED BY LOS ANGELES DODGERS 11TH ROUND - 1999 In 1999, Eric Junge was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 11th round of the free agent draft. After a highly successful 2001 season for the Jacksonville (Fla.) Suns, the Dodgers AA affiliate, Junge was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. Starting 27 games for Jacksonville, Junge finished the year with a 10-11 record to go with a 3.46 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 164.0 innings pitched. Once in the Phillies organization in 2002, Junge began playing for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) Red Barons, a Phillies AAA affiliate. He recorded a 12-6 record and appeared in 29 games, throwing 180.2 innings and 126 strikeouts, allowing 170 hits. On Sept. 10, 2002, Junge was called up by the Philadelphia Phillies and made his debut against the Florida Marlins a day later, becoming the first Bucknellian to appear in a major league baseball game since Bob Keegan s six-year pitching career ended with the Chicago White Sox in 1958. In four appearances, covering 12 2/3 innings, Junge had an impressive 1.42 earned run average, allowing two earned runs on 14 hits and five walks, striking out 11. He finished the 2002 season with a 2-0 record. In 2003, Junge threw 7 2/3 innings for the big club with a 3.52 ERA over six games, with five strikeouts, five hits, three runs and a walk. For the Red Barons, Junge had a 1-0 record in 10 games over 47 innings. He had 42 strikeouts and surrendered 38 hits with 16 walks and 20 runs, 16 earned. During the 2004 season, Junge spent time with the Red Barons and the Clearwater Threshers. Junge threw in 45.1 innings on the season with 33 strikeouts. In 2005, Junge was signed by the New York Mets and enjoyed a successful season with the triple-a Norfolk Tides. As a starting pitcher, he won 10 games and had 114 strikeouts in 125 innings of work. He started 22 games and recorded a 3.80 ERA. In November of that same year, Junge signed with the San Diego Padres and reported to Major League spring training before being assigned to the Triple-A Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League where he pitched 71.2 innings and recorded 61 strikeouts with a record of 4-5 and an ERA of 5.15. Junge spent time with both the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League, and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, the AAA affiliate of the New York Yankees, in 2007. Junge made eight appearances while with the Yankees, starting four contests. He compiled a record of 3-1 with a 5.16 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 29.2 innings of work. In 2008, Junge headed overseas to play with the Orix Buffaloes of Japan s Pacific League. MATT DALEY 04 SIGNED BY COLORADO ROCKIES FREE AGENT Matt Daley signed with the Colorado Rockies during the week following the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft. Daley was sent to play with the club s rookie league team, the Casper Rockies in Wyoming, a part of the Pioneer League. Daley piqued the interest of major league scouts following a productive summer of 2003 in an Illinois amateur collegiate league, and continued that level of play into the 2004 Bucknell season. During a 30-inning stretch without an earned run, Daley came within one out of a nine-inning no-hitter against Dartmouth in Bradenton, Fla., and got that no-hitter in a seven-inning contest against Lehigh on April 3. It was the fourth no-hitter in Bucknell history and closest ever to a perfect game, with two hit batsmen separating Daley from perfection. Bucknell s other no-hitters came in 1956, 1993 and 1998. Daley was also a part of Patriot League Champion Bison squads in 2001 and 2003, helping the team to NCAA Tournament appearances both years. In his first professional season, Daley appeared in 21 games picking up two wins and one loss for the Casper Rockies. Daley posted a 4.75 ERA, third best on the team, and threw in 30.1 innings, allowing 16 earned runs and striking out 21. Daley was promoted to the low class-a Asheville Tourists in 2005 and responded with a successful season. He posted a record of 8-2 as a relief pitcher in 45 appearances. He had a 3.99 ERA and was selected to the South Atlantic League all-star team. In 2006, Daley was promoted to the class-a advanced Modesto Nuts and had a brief but successful three-game stint with the double-a Tulsa Drillers, posting 2008 Patriot League Champions a 1.42 ERA in 6.1 innings with two strikeouts. Daley finished his season with the Nuts with a record of 4-3, a 3.15 ERA, 15 saves and 79 strikeouts. In 2007, Daley was promoted to the Drillers and appeared in 43 games with 10 starts, logging a 2-6 record with a 3.49 ERA. He totaled 22 walks and 84 strikeouts over 95.1 innings pitched. Last season, Daley made his AAA debut with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and appeared in a career-high 60 games. He was 4-6 with a solid 3.75 ERA and yielded just 56 hits and struck out 61 in 62.1 innings. JASON BUURSMA 08 DRAFTED BY ST. LOUIS CARDINALS 25TH ROUND - 2008 Jason Buursma concluded his Bucknell baseball career last spring as perhaps the most decorated player in the long history of the program. At the time of his graduation he ranked in the top 10 in Bucknell history in 17 career categories and 14 single-season lists. That success helped him get drafted for the second consecutive year as the St. Louis Cardinals chose him in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball Draft. One year earlier Buursma was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 43rd round, making him the only Bison to ever be drafted twice. In his final season with Bucknell, Buursma enjoyed a career year both at the plate and on the mound. He hit a team-best.367 with 58 hits, 37 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 37 RBI and a slugging percentage of.671. On the mound, he broke the program wins record with a 9-3 mark and posted a 2.58 earned-run average in 83.2 innings. He totaled just 10 walks and 78 strikeouts, while opposing hitters batted only.226 against him, ending his collegiate career with a 17.1 consecutive shutout innings streak intact. After helping carry the Bison to the 2008 Patriot League title by earning the win in relief in all four of Bucknell s triumphs in the league tournament, Buursma was named the Patriot League Tournament MVP. In addition to becoming the first five-time All-Patriot League selection in school history, Buursma earned All-America plaudits from three different organizations, was named the NCBWA District I Player of the Year, was tabbed an ECAC All-Star and was one of 16 national finalists for the Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award. Buursma set a new Patriot League record for career ERA, finishing with a 2.13 in 181.2 innings of work. He also broke the school record for home runs when he hit the 22nd of his career against Lehigh. Away from the diamond, Buursma, who was the Patriot League Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, performed equally well in the classroom. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team after earning honors for a second consecutive season and was one of 10 national finalists for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. He graduated with a 3.57 grade-point average as an economics major with a philosophy minor, was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll twice and was a Dean s List student. The Bison, who won the Patriot League Tournament last year, have advanced to the championship game eight times since 1996 and have won the title four times during that span. Bucknell swept the Mids in the best-of-three championship series, needing to battle back from five-run deficits in both victories. The winning runs came in the ninth inning of both contests as the Bison outscored Navy 12-1 after the sixth inning during the series. Ben Allen, Jason Buursma, Shawn Hirsch and Ed Rubbo each earned spots on the Patriot League All- Tournament Team, while Buursma earned MVP honors. 20 THE PATRIOT LEAGUE THE PATRIOT LEAGUE In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 97 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 90 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 79 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening-round victories coming in several NCAA Championships including Bucknell s victory over national No. 4 seed Florida State in baseball and Navy s triumph against national No. 4 seed North Carolina in men s lacrosse during the campaign.patriot League teams previously recorded consecutive first-round wins in men s basketball, a final four appearance in men s lacrosse and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship to highlight the League s NCAA success. The Patriot League s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. Here are some highlights from the academic year accomplished by Patriot League student-athletes and teams: 14 Patriot League student-athletes were named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans, including first-team honors for Bucknell s Jason Buursma (Baseball), Army s Daniel Newell (Men s Soccer) and Navy s Kari Weniger (Women s Soccer), Chris Renninger (Golf) and Kelly Zahalka (Women s Swimming) 65 Patriot League student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors, including 42 on the first team Bucknell s Jason Buursma became the first baseball student-athlete to earn Patriot League Player of the Year, Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Tournament Most Valuable Player honors Holy Cross quarterback Dominic Randolph and Colgate running back Jordan Scott were finalists for the Walter Payton Award, while Colgate linebacker Mike Gallihugh was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as top players in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Department believes that student-athletes academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell s high national ranking for student-athletes graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches and staff s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department s programs add substantially to Bucknell s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. PL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL A Patriot League-high 19 Bucknell baseball student-athletes were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008.
