Noise Variations (pitch artifact) In abdomen scans it may happen that the noise e.g. in the liver changes spiralshaped with the z position. This is particularly visible in MPRs where increased noise is imaged as increased brightness: z
Noise Variations In abdomen scans it may happen that the noise e.g. in the liver changes spiralshaped with the z position. This is particularly visible in MPRs where increased noise is imaged as increased brightness: z
Noise Variations The origin of this effect is the fact that in spiral mode the dose is not equally distributed. With a 3D backprojection, this dose distribution will be mapped into a noise distribution in the volume.
Noise Variations Pitch 1.0: in a coronal plane we have regions with multiplicity 1, 2 or 3. 3x 1x z 1x 3x 3x 1x
Noise Variations Pitch 0.6: in a coronal plane we have mostly regions with multiplicity 2 How to prevent the artifact: The artifact is only visible if low contrast regions (e.g. liver) are read with a narrow (soft-tissue) window. It will not be noticeable e.g. in a CTA. In exams where the effect is relevant, the pitch should be lowered, e.g. to 0.6. z
