What is the capital of Ireland? What are the cities in Ireland? What do you think is typical for Ireland?. (Answers: Harp and fiddle: They enjoy music. Horse: They like riding and horses. Dancers: They like dancing. They do Irish/ River dancing. What would you wish for? What is the leprechaun holding in his hand? A shamrock: The shamrock is the symbol of Ireland and Saint Patrick s Day. It brings good luck.) 6. What is the text about? Diskutera i klassen. 8. Gör After reading. Använd EPA-metoden (enskilt, i par och sist i grupp). 9. Gör Talk about it i helklass. 10. Avsluta med övning 2:6 ur Workbook. 2
How old do you think Patrick is in this stained glass window? How do we know that he became an important person? He is wearing fine robes, jewels, a bishop s hat and is carrying a gold staff. Let s read the story of Saint Patrick s dramatic life. 3. Gör Before Reading. Nu har eleverna fått en tidsreferens. The story takes place a little over 2000 years ago. 4. Fråga: Who is the main character? Point to him in each panel. How many panels show Patrick as a boy? How many panels show him as a young man? How many panels show him as an important person? 5. Titta nu närmare på varje enskild ruta.fråga: What is happening in this panel? What is Patrick feeling? How would you feel if you were in his shoes? What is/ are the other person/people doing? How does/do the other person/people feel? 6. Läs nu hela serien. Fråga: What did you learn about Roman Britain/Ireland/ Saint Patrick from this comic strip? 7. Läs Did you know? och fråga: When was the last leap year? When is the next leap year? Do you know what happens if a man turns down a woman s marriage proposal on leap day? He has to buy her a dozen pairs of gloves. How many is a dozen? (Twelve items.) 8. Gör uppgifterna 2:7 2:9 i Workbook. Ett venn-diagram ser ut så här: 9. Avsluta med rollspel: uppgifterna a och b i Textbook, s 51. 3
Teacher Input Panels are frames which each contain one part of the story. Gutters are the spaces between the panels where the reader has to imagine the action from panel to panel. Captions give text information. Speech bubbles contain the characters dialogue. A thought bubble is for thought, not words that are spoken aloud. 4

The Emerald Isle Ireland has a mild climate with a lot of rain. Many people complain about the rain, but it makes the grass very green. Maybe this is why Ireland is such a pretty country, with lots of green fields, rivers, valleys, hills and mountains. Ireland is sometimes called The Emerald Isle because of this. Ireland also has beaches, cliffs and stony islands. Saint Patrick s Day Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick s Day is on 17 March and is Ireland s national day. This day is celebrated by Irish people all over the world. People wear green clothes and decorate with shamrocks, the national symbol of Ireland. They eat traditional Irish food, have parades and make wishes on four-leafed clovers for good luck. The biggest celebrations outside Ireland are in the USA. Do you know why? Many poor Irish people left for the USA, England, Canada and Australia about 150 years ago, so there are now a lot of people in these countries and across the world with Irish ancestors. A Saint is born Back in Ireland How can one god be three people, a trinity? We will always remember him! Patrick is a true saint. Just as the shamrock has three leaves, but is one plant, so we have God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. DID YOU KNOW? There is a tradition that women can propose marriage to men on leap days. Why is this so? One day in the fifth century, Saint Brigid complained to Saint Patrick that it was unfair that only men could propose. So Saint Patrick decided to allow women to do the asking once every four years on 29 February.
