I live in one of the biggest cities in the world. More than 15 million people live here! Sorry, I forgot to tell you, I live in Hong Kong. One amazing thing here is the market. Granny shops here every day. When I m on vacation I go with her. Otherwise she forgets what to buy before she leaves the house! She knows everything about ancient Chinese medicine. She s always buying strange things. And they re not very pretty. Our medicine is different. She thinks that health comes from a balance of body energies. Granny s tea recipe is old. 2
It s a mixture of scorpions, dried snake and stag horn. She calls it fool s drink. Don t you dare laugh. She thinks it s delicious. Granny s favourite place is the jade market. She s so superstitious. She s been looking for a talisman. She swears that if she finds it, it will bring good luck. I hope she remembers how to make her tea. Even if she does- -I m not going to drink any! The port of Hong Kong is probably the biggest in the world. I want to be a marine biologist. It might seem strange- -but someday I m going to have to save this port from pollution. I live here with my mom and dad and Francis, my brother. He s a monster, but I get in trouble even if he s the one who starts it. I m sure you don t believe me, because he looks like an angel. I d really like my parents to explain why they named us Tony and Francis. Lots of Chinese have Western first names. I don t know why. Mati s from the Philippines. She takes care of us while Mom is at work. I got this parrot for my birthday. I m the one who takes care of it. I ve got a lot of friends, but Douglas is my best friend. He s crazy. That s why we get along so well. Douglas is Eurasian. His dad is English and his mom is Chinese. But he can hardly speak Cantonese. In Hong Kong you can find anything. Certain streets specialize in different items. On Bird street- -you can see millions of different kinds of birds. It s one of my favourite streets. 3
Chinese people like birds because in a city of this size- -birds bring us a bit of nature. They help us learn how very fragile nature s balance really is. Hong Kong is great for children. Douglas and I love trying new things, like McDonald s. Granny thinks we re crazy to eat hamburgers. I wouldn t be surprised if she secretly loved hamburgers. Maybe she eats here while we re at school. Like that grandmother! On certain streets the stores only sell electronics. Miles and miles of computers! Douglas is wild about video games. I always have to drag him out of the stores. It s easier now that you have to pay. When it was free, we stayed all day long. It was great while it lasted. Every year my family always spends a day with friends on Lantau Island. Life in Hong Kong is always so busy that it s really a change of pace. Gigi is my favourite cousin. She doesn t know it- -but guess who s going to take care of Francis today? When I explain to my family what I have to do to save Hong Kong- -and it s ecosystem, they don t listen. Kind of like grandma and her plants. The Giant Buddha is the most famous tourist attraction in Lantau. The Feng Shui Masters said this would be the best place- -for Buddha to protect Hong Kong. The builders consulted them to know where it d make the spirits happy. This is Tao O, a tiny fishing village. My father says it s older than time itself. He exaggerates sometimes! Lantau has a huge beach. Everything is big here! 4
Gigi makes sand castles while Douglas and I go swimming. Well, I would be swimming if this big jerk wasn t bugging me so much! Douglas understands me perfectly. He knows that I love Hong Kong. He s impressed that I know so much about the marine world. He tells everybody that I m going to be a great marine biologist. I hope he s right! After our trip we re going to have dinner with my father. I m glad to spend time with him. The Jumbo is the most fun restaurant! You should see how big it is! And the interior design is beautiful. What s cool is you catch your own fish. Gigi loves lobsters- -but hates touching them. There are over a hundred fish to choose from. Chinese never go by themselves to a restaurant. If the entire family isn t together we feel like something s missing. Douglas and his parents aren t part of the family, but they re good friends. We re talking so much, that we can t even hear the music, but it s not bad. Hong Kong has lots of amazing stores, but we hate it- -when Gigi and her friend window shop. They just like clothes. They never want to look at what we like. They even think CD s are boring. The places I love the most are Ocean Park and the Middle Kingdom. It s strange that it s on a mountain. You d think it d make more sense if it was near the ocean. You re wrong! Douglas doesn t think it s funny at all. Heights make him dizzy. The dolphin show is fabulous. They are funny and smart. I feel the same way about my parrot. It makes me a little sad though. These animals are in prison. But if they were free, I d worry too. I don t want to see them in fishing nets. I don t know what to think. I would love it if animals could talk and tell us what they want! 5
Chinese people love goldfish too. I believe that they bring good luck. The Feng Shui Masters tell people what kind of fish bring good luck. There are such strange looking ones here. They look like flying saucers! Chinese are superstitious. Our belief in spirits is part of our culture. Many of us believe in lucky numbers. When Douglas says he s not superstitious I have to laugh. Ask him to walk under a ladder to prove it isn t true. He s afraid of having seven years of bad luck! Isn t that superstitious? The Middle Kingdom is near Ocean Park. You can see shows there. The best way to get around is by roller-skate. Try not to wipe out. Maybe girls like trying on costumes because an Empress wore them. It s like travelling back in time. They were beautiful on the Empress, but those two look ridiculous! Oh, so boring! Hong Kong is changing at an unbelievable rate. Soon it will be a part of China again. Then things will change even more. All I know is it s a very important city. And we have a great time here! I ll study the ocean in Hong Kong and teach others how to take care- -of the water and the animals. That way Hong Kong will stay beautiful! 6
