VILDMARKSVÄGEN THE WILDERNESS ROAD Photo: Magnus Ström Mountain hiking on wheels in Jämtland och Lappland
Mountain hiking on wheels Photo: segel.se Take a spectacular 500 km journey through pristine wilderness in the northern mountains. The part of Vildmarksvägen over Stekenjokk is open from early June till mid of October. The Wilderness Road doesn t that sound tempting. A road through the wilderness from Strömsund in Jämtland over the mountains to Vilhelmina in Lappland, and then back to Strömsund via Dorotea and Hoting. The road passes through several places with exotic names like Gäddede, Stekenjokk, Klimpfjäll, Saxnäs and Borgafjäll. The road goes through Lappland s cultural districts, through alpine forests and above the tree line and the wilderness is just a hop, skip and jump away. So the concept of hiking by car is very real. When you get out of your car, you are in the wilderness... Photo: Mats Ericsson Arctic Fox Gyrfalcon Photo: Tor Persson Above the tree line are vast mountain heaths and accessible peaks. The air is clear, the silence is deafening and the water is refreshing and, of course, drinkable. Out with the mug! Whether you head out on a multi-day hike with a tent or take a short car trip, the Wild-erness Road is the best way to get up above the tree line. Don t drive too fast, stop frequently and take in the mountain atmosphere and scents during your long or short trip. Guest at the reindeer Hiking in the mountains can feel like traveling in boundless wilderness. But something we have to remember is that, in nature, we are never alone. We are not simply on a beautiful mountain, but this place is also a pasture and a workplace for reindeer-herding Sami. The reindeer navigate by their inner compasses and their inherited hiking lust, and a female reindeer has a longing for the place on the mountain where she herself was born to deliver her very own calf. Even though it s hard to belive, the mountain areas are limited. In our area, only six Sami villages still own their grazing areas. Photo: Magnus Ström
Strömsund What an experience to be in the mountains! Join in on a wide variety of activities for all skill levels. All of them share a common goal: To make your heart pump a little bit faster. How would you like to crawl through the Coral Cave, discover the Bjurälven River, glide through the waters in a kayak or explore the countryside on an Icelandic horse? Those are just some of the things you can do in Frostviksfjällen. Do not forget to buy Frostvikenkortet a fishing license where 120 fishing waters in Frostviken area included.. Through the kingdom of bears Whether you are starting from Strömsund or Vilhelmina you ll travel through forests and mountain Sami cultural districts before you reach the tree line. If you start in Strömsund, you ll drive through an area with the world s densest brown bear population and past Hällingsåfallet Falls. Past is probably the wrong word. You will, of course, want to stop at the 43-metre high waterfall that plunges into a 800-metre long water-filled canyon. In the sunlight you ll see three to six rainbows in the water vapour. To really see the canyon formation it s best to start from the rest area 2.5 km south of the falls. There is a marked trail leading from there that follows the Hällingsån River s canyon upstream. Frostviken Ceramics, with its beautiful hand-thrown pottery and summer café, is a few miles away and is also a given stop. The Gäddede Touristinformation has an exhibition about the area. The animals that you haven t seen for real can be seen here. Great fishing... Around Blåsjön Lake and Jormvattnet there is exclusive fishing and knowledgeable guides. Take the time to stop and try your luck. Several popular trails start from Ankarede, the Sami church site with its kotas and chapel. Coral Cave (Korallgrottan) was discovered in 1985 and over three miles of paths and caverns have been explored so far. With a guide and protective clothing, a visit to the cave is something you ll never forget. If you don t want to go underground, then choose the nearby Bjurälven Nature Reserve. It s a great place to roam with easy walking paths. The Bjurälven River carved out a karst area with caves and sinkholes that hurl the river underground. The river winds around down below, and above ground there is a botanically interesting and unique area. The tour will be an even greater experience with a guide, who can be booked through the guide company Vilseledaren. Past Ankarvattnet, continue on Stekenjokk Road and you ll soon be up past the tree line. Foto: Isabella Jacobsson Bear Strömsund is the densest area of brown bears worldwide. Bears are shy but with some luck you can see them along the way. Keep your eyes open! Foto: Gerd Sjöberg Vilseledaren A guide company that takes you on all sorts of adventures, from underground to the mountain peaks, leaving not a trace of your passage through Mother Nature s realm. We offer guided tours on all sorts of themes, from complete tour packages to tailored routes just for you! Foto: Pernilla Gunnarsdotter Persson Foto: Gerd Sjöberg Don t miss in Strömsund Picturesquely nestled in the Ströms Vattudal water system, the local heritage museum in Strömsund consists of some 20 buildings and collections of objects. You re welcomed by the six-metre high statue of Jorm the Giant from the children s film Dunderklumpen. Along the E45 south of Strömsund is a campsite with free swimming and a nine-hole golf course. It s also the start of a grand walking trail that ends at the bird tower on the lake in Tullingsås. Strömsund turistinformation Ramselevägen 6, 0670-164 00 turistinformation@stromsund.se Bjurälven River The Bjurälven River was named Sweden s Geological Heritage site of 2014, in the face of keen competition. To get that little extra, we recommend that you book a guided hike. Mountain Park Next to the Touristinformation is Frostviken s Fjällpark och Naturinformation, where you can learn about the history and the unique flora and fauna of Frostviken in an entrancing indoor exhibition. Outdoors, signs guide you through the mountain flora in the park.

You can never get enough of Vilhelmina Past Ankarvattnet the road climbs further up toward Stekenjokk Plateau. The road over to Klimpfjäll usually opens in early June. Snowdrifts can sometimes be as high as 7 meters. That s when the Road Administration s huge snow blowers face their toughest job. Located in Klimpfjäll is the historic Norgefarargården. It was formerly a way station for the mountain farmers trading trips to Norway. Norgefararleden Trail also starts here, which used to be a winter road for horse-drawn sleighs going to the markets in Norway. It s now a beautiful hiking trail to the Susendalen Valley in Norway. Fatmomakke has always been a gathering place people have been here since the Stone Age and the area has been a Sami church site since the 1700s. Fatmomakke has some 80 kotas, 20 timber church cottages and a church from 1884. An attraction of cultural interest is the dazzling white Ricklundgården situated on a hill in the middle of Saxnäs. The property has remained intact since the 1950s and all the artists who were guests of Emma and Folke Ricklund have left paintings behind. The exhibition of over 500 paintings is well worth a visit. Now follow the shoreline of beautiful Malgomajsjön Lake on toward the mountains along streams and forest lakes. Fishing opportunities abound. Today there is a duplicate of the cabin in Marsliden where he lived with his family. Stop by and take in the environment and atmosphere. Next stop is Vilhelmina... Dorotea Lapplands sydport Don t miss in Dorotea Sights in central Dorotea are the Dorotea Bear carved of Siberian larch by Lars Kupparinen, the watermill, the Dorotea stone and Helmer Grundström s stone. Take time to eat and have a coffee or take a walk along the Art Trail around Bergvattensjön Lake. Also stop in Fågelsta and see if the chainsaw artist is home in his garden and enjoy his fine work. Photo: Magnus Ström You arrive in the Lappish wilderness in Dorotea. In the west lies Borgafjällen an expansive area that attracts many visitors from near and far. You ll find beautiful Dorotea situated on Bergvattensjön Lake. Don t be fooled by the small size of the community there are lots of activities and excursions available. Take a tour of Dorotea and visit Dorotea Church where two of Carl Milles statues can be seen, while the church itself was designed by his brother Evert Milles. Don t miss the life-size Last Supper sculpture group by artist Björn Martinius in the chapel beside the church. Take a detour to one of our charming villages with heritage areas, cultural spaces, great fishing sites and excellent walking trails. Four big works of art along the road from Dorotea to Borgafjäll make for extra-interesting sightseeing. On a fishing trip in Dorotea you ll encounter a variety of waterways. The fishing is varied in beautiful natural habitats. There are a wide variety of different types of waters with char, brown trout and grayling, the species in which visiting anglers are most interested. More recently, the area s abundant populations of bream, ide, perch and pike have attracted new categories of anglers. Popular fishing grounds in the area include StorRajan and Långseleån. Photo: Magnus Ström Photo: Magnus Ström Photo: Magnus Ström Borgafjäll area About 100 kilometers west of Dorotea is the Borgafjäll area with its exciting surroundings and views. Here you can hike, fish, ride ATVs, eat well, view architecture and crafts. Visit the Sutme Sami camp, a 200-year-old encampment that is located on the trail to Klimpfjäll. Two other original Sami camps that are well worth a visit are Storviken and Lappvallen. Caravan/Trailermuseum, Dorotea Museum for everyone who loves caravans. Here you can see the development of Polar caravans from 1964 onwards. Also clothing, posters, furnishings and plenty of timeless caravan curiosities. The museum has nine different models of caravans on display. Kullerbacken local history area This local history area has a collection of old buildings and objects from the area. Nicely situated above Dorotea church with a beautiful view of the Dorotea community.
Crafts and food What do we remember most from our travels? What we ve seen, heard, smelled and tasted, of course. There is a large selection of local food producers and artisans along the Wilderness Road. Award-winning cheeses and whey, delicious flat bread, good deli meats, fish, marmalade Be sure to visit the shops!
