Transkript:

Lars Andersson 1A Presentation Lars Andersson s academic career began in 1973 when he joined the Laboratory for Clinical Stress Research (Laboratoriet för Klinisk Stressforskning) at the Karolinska Institute armed with a background in social- and behavioural studies. As his first commission, he co-authored one of Sweden s four contributions to UN s Population Conference in Bucharest. By chance, he came to work on a project on social gerontology in 1974 a field to which he has become faithful. Lars Andersson s research touches different fields within social gerontology. His earlier works revolved around the retirement process and, among other things, the health effects of becoming a pensioner. This project involved recalling the working career and relating the effects of work-related factors to situations at the time of retirement. In 1984, he defended his dissertation Aging and Loneliness. An interventional study of a group of elderly women, at the Karolinska Institute. As the title suggests, this dissertation discussed feelings of loneliness. The characteristics of the concept of loneliness were set apart and various types of loneliness were differentiated. Interventions were introduced in another part of the study, and their positive effects for reducing loneliness were evaluated. The experiences of loneliness also played out in the analysis of how childhood experiences affects well-being in old age. When the research foundation Äldrecentrum (Stockholm Gerontology Research Center) was newly established in Stockholm, Lars was instituted as one of the four research heads. A number of projects were initiated. Among other things, these dealt with issues of ethics in elderly care, loneliness as well as health behaviour. In 1989, he became an associate professor in gerontology at the Karolinska Institute. Lars Andersson has also worked with time-budget analyses where older people s activities over the day were analysed. He was also involved in a so-called Eurobarometer study, a comprehensive project where comparisons between older people in Sweden and other EU countries have been made possible. The results of the project disproved numerous myths about older people s opinions, wellbeing and living conditions. Elderly care remains a central concern in social gerontology, especially with regards to formal and informal care. By collecting data from different sources, Lars investigated elderly people s living conditions, autonomy and own wishes about whom to receive help and support from. Issues concerning public health are also of interest to Lars Andersson. In a longitudinal investigation of health attitudes and health behaviour, a clear cohort difference was affirmed. Public health, as well as mental health, has also been the focus of some EU projects, while other EU projects concerned policy and quality of life. Lars has also collaborated in the WHO project Healthy Ageing and was a member of WHO s Expert Advisory Panel on Ageing and Health 1997-2013. In 2003, he took up the position of Professor in Ageing and later life at Linköping University. His later texts analyse ageism, or prejudices and stereotypes based on a person s age that could lead to discrimination. Lately, future issues such as how modern biotechnology can influence ageing, has also been of interest. Lars Andersson has more than 180 publications in the field. An overview of the field could be

read in two books edited by him, Socialgerontologi (2002, 2 nd ed. 2013) and Cultural Gerontology (2002), and one book co-edited with Peter Öberg, Jämlik ålderdom? I samtiden och framtiden (Equality in old age? In our age and in the future) His book Ålderism (Ageism) was published in 2008. He also founded the scientific open access journal International Journal of Ageing and Later Life (IJAL), and was its Editor-in-Chief 2006-2016. He has been a member of the editorial boards of The Journal of Applied Gerontology, The Journal of Aging and Health, and Current Sociology, monograph issues, and an overseas adviser for Ageing & Society. In addition, Lars Andersson has also made important contributions of organizational nature. Among others things, he arranged three international congresses (Stockholm 1992, Visby 2001, Stockholm 2004). For many years, he was a board member of the Research Committee Sociology of Aging of the International Sociological Association, and was also its president 2002-2006. Between 2004 and 2008, he was the president of the Nordic Federation of Gerontology (Nordisk Gerontologisk Förening). In 1998, he was one of the founding members of the Swedish Gerontological Society (Sveriges Gerontologiska Sällskap) and was its president from the start until 2009. He is a Fellow of The Gerontological Society of America since 1991. (Professor Sandra Torres)

An interventional study of a group of elderly women. Avhandlingsarbetet tog upp ensamhet bland äldre (kvinnor). WHO:s Expert Advisory Panel on Ageing and Health 1997-2013.

Han är också Fellow of The Gerontological Society of America sedan 1991. År 2013 tilldelades han Stora Gerontologipriset. (Professor Sandra Torres)
