3 UMEDALEN SKULPTUR I utställningskatalogen Umedalen Skulptur 1994 skriver Stefan Andersson Det är min förhoppning och målsättning att projektet kommer att bli en publik framgång och att Umedalen Skulptur kan bli ett årligen återkommande evenemang. I dag, tolv år senare, kan man konstatera att konstprojektet både blivit ett återkommande evenemang och dessutom ett framgångsrikt sådant. Efter att ha varit ett årligt arrangemang fram till år 2000, genomförs numera utställningarna vartannat år. Men Umedalen Skulptur är inte bara en tillfällig utställning. Balticgruppen, som finansierar projektet har genom åren förvärvat tjugofem skulpturer som bildar en imponerande permanent skulptursamling på området. Att ett privat företag så medvetet och långsiktigt satsar på konst i den här omfattningen är unikt och beundransvärt. Balticgruppen beskriver själva sin kultursatsning: All verksamhet i koncernen präglas av filosofin att främjande av god kultur leder till högre livskvalitet, stärker den lokala identiteten och därmed förbättrar förutsättningarna för koncernbolagens verksamheter. Balticgruppen har genom satsningar på skulptural konst, bland annat i Umedalens skulpturpark, medverkat till att göra Umeå till ett nationellt centrum för skulptural konst. Tack vare Umedalen Skulptur är Umedalsparken i dag en av länets största attraktioner med närmare besökare varje år. Umedalen Skulptur har fått stor uppmärksamhet och en rad utmärkelser. Bland dessa kan nämnas Sveriges Tidskrifters pris för Bästa konstarrangemang i Sverige år För två år sedan premierade Kultur och Näringsliv Umedalen Skulptur med pris för Bästa kultursponsring Juryns motivering var följande: Genom ett unikt och inspirerande samarbete mellan ett galleri och ett fastighetsbolag har den gamla sjukhusparken omvandlats till en spännande skulpturpark av hög internationell klass och en modern företagspark med högt goodwillvärde, attraktiv för nya målgrupper. Den senaste utmärkelsen som tilldelats Umedalen Skulptur är Boverkets Stadsmiljöråds pris år 2005 för bästa exemplet i landet på Konst och design i det offentliga rummet med motiveringen: Genom en kunnig och kompromisslös satsning på konst av hög nationell och internationell klass förvandlas det tidigare mentalsjukhusområdet Umedalen till en konst- och skulpturverksamhet med genklang i hela landet. Genom de årliga utställningssatsningarna visas ny och spännande konst och genom inköp byggs en permanent skulpturpark av hög konstnärlig kvalitet. Arrangörerna har genom sin satsning visat att man med engagemang, kunskap och envishet regionalt kan skapa konstverksamheter som i ambition och utförande kan konkurrera med satsningar i storstadsregionerna. 4

4 I år, när vi utsetts till en av finalisterna i tävlingen Sveriges vackraste park 2006, är det dags igen; för tionde gången arrangeras Umedalen Skulptur. Utställningen invigs av Göran Christenson, chef för Malmö Konstmuseum. Sedan första gången, 1994, har drygt hundrafemtio konstnärer presenterat sina verk i parken på Umedalen, och nu tillkommer tretton namn på den listan. Självklart är att utan alla dessa konstnärer skulle inte skulpturparken ha haft dessa framgångar och vi är dem oändligt tacksamma för de enastående insatser som gjorts. Till årets utställare: Tack för alla konstverk som vi förvånats över, fascinerats av och förälskat oss i. Vår förhoppning och målsättning inför framtiden är att Umedalen Skulptur ska fortsätta utvecklas; Att den permanenta samlingen ska kompletteras med betydelsefulla verk, att de tillfälliga utställningarna även fortsättningsvis ska bestå av en variation av skulpturer gjorda av såväl unga, lovande konstnärer som etablerade, internationella världsstjärnor. Framför allt hoppas vi att skulpturparken ska fortsätta att vara en berikande och stimulerande plats att besöka och uppleva året runt för både entusiastiska umeåbor och tillresta konstvänner. 5 UMEDALEN SKULPTUR In the 1994 Umedalen Skulptur exhibition catalog, Stefan Andersson wrote I m hoping and aiming for this project to be a success so that Umedalen Skulptur can be an annual event that keeps people coming back, time and time again. Today, twelve years later, the art project has in fact become an annual event, and on top of that, one that keeps the public coming back. After being a yearly event up until 2000, the exhibitions are now every other year. But Umedalen Skulptur is not just a temporary exhibition. Balticgruppen, which finances the project, has acquired twenty-five sculptures throughout the years that are creating an impressive permanent sculpture collection for local display. It s quite unique for a privately owned company to be this in touch with their community and willing to make long-term commitment to art at such extent. It s an act that is inspiring and greatly admirable. Balticgruppen takes such interest in art because they believe that when they support the arts, everyone benefits. As they describe it themselves: Our actions are best characterized by the philosophy that the promotion of good culture leads to a general improved quality of life and a strengthened community. In doing so we strengthen our relationship with our community as well. Balticgruppen has invested and committed to the arts among other things in Umedalen s sculpture park with intent to make Umeå the national hub for sculptured arts. Thanks to Umedalen Skulptur, today Umedalsparken is one the county s largest attractions with nearly 20,000 visitors every year. Umedalen Skulptur has received a great deal of attention, recognition and awards. Amongst these are Sweden s Journalists prize for Best art event in Sweden for the year Two years ago Arts and Buiness Sweden awarded Umedalen Skulptur with a prize for Best culture sponsorship The jury s motivation was as follows: Through a unique and inspiring cooperation between a gallery and a real estate company, an old hospital property has transformed into an exciting sculpture park of high international class. It s now a modern business park with high goodwill value that is attractive to a wide variety of people. The most recent example of recognition earned by Umedalen Skulptur came from the The National Board of Housing, Building and Planning with a prize for being the country s best example of Art and design in a public space. The committee s decision to award Umedalen Skulptur this prestigious award was based on the following: 6

6 Through a knowledgeable and uncompromising commitment to art of prodigious national and international stature, an area known for being the former home of a mental hospital has been transformed to an art and sculpture park that has received great recognition throughout the country. As a result of investing in annual exhibitions, new and exciting art has emerged and along with it comes a permanent sculpture park of the finest artistic quality. Through these annual art exhibitions, Umedalen Skulptur has demonstrated how individuals with initiative, knowledge and perseverance can create art events similar in ambition and performance that can compete with other investment projects throughout the city. This year, when we are selected as one of the finalists in this year s competition for Sweden s most beautiful park of 2006, it s also time for our tenth annual Umedalen Skulptur event. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Göran Christenson, director of the Malmö Art Museum. Since the first time in 1994, more then one hundred and fifty artists have their works in the park at Umedalen and now thirteen more are added to that list. Of course without all of these artists the sculpture park would have never experienced the success that it has and we are eternally grateful for the extraordinary efforts they have made. To all of this year s participants: Thank you for creating all the captivating artwork that we are all fascinated by and infatuated with. Our hopes and goals for the near future are that Umedalen Skulptur will continue to grow; that the permanent collection will be complemented with meaningful works, that the temporary displays will also continue to consist of a variation of sculptures made by young, emerging artists as well as those established, international celebrities. We especially hope that the sculpture park will continue to be an enriched and stimulating place to visit and experience year-round for enthusiastic residents of Umeå as well as for the rest of our visiting friends in art. Education; Grafikskolan, Stockholm, College of Fine Arts, Umeå Exhibitions in selection: Konstens Hus, Luleå 2002, Grafiktriennal XII, Stockholm 2003, Skellefteå Konsthall, 2004, Galleri 60, Umeå The idea behind FLIP, with the flipped stair level, comes from an oceanic research vessel that can fill its stern with water and shift into a vertical position. Then when the boat s stern tips, the stern post moves and becomes a fourlevel structure with stairways. When the vessel returns to a horizontal position the stern post overturns so that the ground level acts as walls with stairways that lie diagonally overhead. FLIP comments also on the architecture in Umedalen s former hospital area through its colors with the characteristic pink salmon hue. The straight, thin construction of this piece guides the viewer s thoughts to line drawings as the border between sculpture and drawing approach a resolution. MATS BERGQVIST 8

Just as we exist in the normal world as ourselves, we concurrently exist in a fragmented form as pictures, text and data on the Internet. This piece manages to meld this variety of representations with effectiveness as it displays a man dressed in a suit and tie that is completely constructed of 1cm3 cubes. The sculpture is made of acrylic glass and the pixel s colors provide the sculpture with both an organic and incandescent appearance. THOMAS BROOMÉ 10

It is a recognisable image and it is playing with the imagination of what is or is not possible. The tempting, flashing lights are not, in the first hand, guiding planes to an airport. The installation stands in an unexpected place and its function is to be questioned. What are the lights of the construction designed to guide, and where do they lead? The artwork s fundamental, aesthetical meaning lies in its visual function, wherein the viewer is reminded of the placement of the installation. The artwork receives a certain character, when thoughts are focused through reciprcal action between the viewer, the artwork and their surrounding environment. The site, the guiding lights terminal point, creates an absurd situation, as it seems impossible to follow the guidance of the running lights. Finally, Guide frees a revision of established trains of thought. Although the installation appears to have a practical purpose, its placement pushes the pragmatic idea aside. Thus a situation arises whereby the first sighting of an object and the succeeding interpretation can t always be taken for granted. The artwork then becomes a reminder that objects in our surrounding, are not always what they seem. Guide encourages a viewer to reassess seemingly familiar environments. GUSTAV HELLBERG 16

If an artist searches for different context for his art long enough, then sooner or later it will end up in a public space. Art in public spaces tends to be less respected. This could have something to do with the fact that people like artists, when pertaining to art in the public space, must take into consideration that not everybody wants to constantly be confronted by art with a strong expression. Through making temporary displays in a public space, one can dodge the normal demands and restrictions of sculpture intended for public display. Temporary art in public space opens the doors to push the debate forward regarding what art on the street means to society. The art in a public space catches an unprepared audience and becomes an active part of the community and its local governing. Everything must be a declaration of love in one way or another, but some mornings you get up, eat your breakfast and ask yourself who the hell am I trying to impress? The project consisted of eighty traffic signs that I painted and altered throughout Sweden. My thought was that people should come strolling along and like a ray of light, be surprised by an unexpected street sign displaying a man in a rocket or a pedestrian with wings. The ones that haven t yet been discovered by the highway department are still standing. MIKAEL RICHTER 30
