Mountain tours in Jämtland and Lappland Photo: Ulla Hopponen ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK I ll never forget my first visit to the mountain region of Stekenjokk some 30 years ago. The road provided uniquely easy access to Sweden s middle- and high-arctic regions, and even now I can say, as an experienced birdwatcher and filmer, that you can t get closer to a wilderness like this anywhere else in the Swedish Alps. That s just the simple truth. Don t forget your binoculars and a guide to mountain birds. You re entering what may be one of Europe s best bird havens. At least the mountain species golden plover, dotterel, red-necked phalarope, long-tailed jaeger, dunlin and gyrfalcon are everyday sights here. It s a wonderfully accessible area where you can see and hear without disturbing the wildlife. An added spice is the occasional arctic fox or snowy owl. You never know what you might encounter here! If you visit the area in mid-june, the vistas are framed with metrehigh snowdrifts, melting snow and babbling brooks intermingling with the musical call of the bluethroat. If you have the opportunity, try to record the glorious song of the redwing it s a concert you won t soon forget. And if you hear squeaking and tussling in the brush, that s lemmings pottering about. Amazing little creatures. If you re visiting in July, you can fill out your travel diary with a rich assortment of mountain flora. : Strömsund/FROSTVIKEN Photo: Isabella Jacobsson Through the kingdom of bears Don t miss in Strömsund Picturesquely nestled in the Ströms Vattudal water system, the local heritage museum in Strömsund consists of some 20 buildings and collections of objects. You re welcomed by the six-metre high statue of Jorm the Giant from the children s film Dunderklumpen. Along the E45 south of Strömsund is a campsite with free swimming and a nine-hole golf course. It s also the start of a grand walking trail that ends at the bird tower on the lake in Tullingsås. Buy local meats and other food at Hallvikens Gårdschark along the E45. Whether you are starting from Strömsund or Vilhelmina you ll travel through forests and mountain Sami cultural districts before you reach the tree line. Photo: Pernilla G Persson Mountain Park & nature information Next to the tourist office is Frostviken s Fjällpark och Naturinformation, where you can learn about the history and the unique flora and fauna of Frostviken in an entrancing indoor exhibition. Outdoors, signs guide you through the mountain flora in the park. More info: +46(0)672-105 00 If you start in Strömsund, you ll drive through an area with the world s densest brown bear population and past Hällingsåfallet Falls. Past is probably the wrong word. You will, of course, want to stop at the 43-metre high waterfall that plunges into a 800-metre long water-filled canyon. In the sunlight you ll see three to six rainbows in the water vapour. To really see the canyon formation it s best to start from the rest area 2.5 km south of the falls. There is a marked trail leading from there that follows the Hällingsån River s canyon upstream. Frostviken Ceramics, with its beautiful hand-thrown pottery and summer café, is a few miles away and is also a given stop. The Gäddede Tourist Office has an exhibition about the area. The animals that you haven t seen for real can be seen here. If you don t want to go underground, then choose the nearby Bjurälven Nature Reserve. It s a great place to roam with easy walking paths. The Bjurälven River carved out a karst area with caves and sinkholes that hurl the river underground. The river winds around down below, and above ground there is a botanically interesting and unique area. The tour will be an even greater experience with a guide, who can be booked through the Gäddede Tourist Office. Around Blåsjön Lake and Jormvattnet there is exclusive fishing and knowledgeable guides. Take the time to stop and try your luck. Several popular trails start from Ankarede, the Sami church site with its kotas and chapel. Coral Cave (Korallgrottan) was discovered in 1985 and over three miles of paths and caverns have been explored so far. With a guide and protective clothing, a visit to the cave is something you ll never forget.
