Efter föredragen anordnas en sexa, i vilken alla är välkomna att delta. Noteworthy episodes include the rejection of metaphysics as meaningless by the logical positivists; the rehabilitation of metaphysics by Quine and then, as the science of the possible, Lewis; and the ongoing debate about the intelligibility of grounding in post-modal metaphysics. 15
Testimony Knowing and Trusting What You are Told: Issues in the Epistemology and Ethics of Testimony Teacher Andreas Stokke andreas.stokke@filosofi.uu.se Course Description Most of what we know, we know because someone told us so. Large parts of our knowledge of the world, of other people, even of ourselves, is based on information we have received from the testimony of others. Yet as widespread as this reliance on testimony is, it seems just as fragile. Given the impossibility of constantly policing the truthfulness and accuracy of our sources, we are forced to take on trust most of the testimony we receive from others. This doubleness is a central part of the philosophical interest in testimony, in particular, the epistemology of testimony. At the same time, the fact that we rely fundamentally on others has crucial ethical implications for what we do when we tell others things, and what can be done to us by how things are told to us. Particular ethical and political issues arise when someone s testimony is given less credibility than it should due to irrelevant prejudices about the speaker. This course will revolve around these, and surrounding, issues concerning testimony by focusing on topics like the status of testimony among other sources of knowledge, the basis of our justification for believing what others tell us, to what extent testimony is a mechanism for transmitting knowledge between agents, what kind of a breech of trust is involved in lying or insincere testimony, and what kind of injustice is involved in disregarding what someone says due to prejudices about who they are or the group to which they belong. The course is directed primarily at advanced students, at advanced MA level and PhD level. A high level of student participation in discussions is expected. The course will be conducted in English. 16

Quite possibly knowledge is virtue, or else displaces any need to talk of virtue in the usual way. These outrageous Platonic claims seem indefensible. This course will seek the best possible defence, and in the course of that deepen our understanding of who we are and the importance of reality and integrity in ethical formation. We will first examine Plato s epistemology, which might be described as recommending we be autologos rather than auto-nomos. We become auto-logos by appreciating the robust standards of complete knowledge as having ultimate authority in our cognitive lives, and therefore in our estimation of the importance, salience, meaning and desirability of whatever perception of the world presents to us. Granting it this authority integrates our cognitive lives, and also our experience as sensate creatures with respect to a reality that is not determined by us. That is to say, aiming at accountability is a practice in integrating ourselves; aiming at comprehensive accountability integrates us comprehensively. A different account of knowledge one for instance that distinguishes, as Aristotle does, between theoretical and practical knowledge could not be ex- 18
pected to have the like effect on us; and similarly, restricting the relevant bit of reality to a predefined conception of the human (as at least neo-aristotelian naturalists do) would not promise the fundamental reorienting that Plato s knowledge-seeking does. We will close by considering the expected or promised effect on character of a non-naturalist ethics, such as the Indian Buddhist one, which grants a Platonic sort of priority to knowing impersonal reality, but does not suppose the reality to be known is itself intelligible nor that knowing consists in accoutability. DOKTORANDKURSER (öppna även för masterstudenter) Parliamentarism Lärare: Nicola Lupo The course will combine some of the theories regarding Parliaments and Parliamentarism (first part) with some of the current practices of representative democracy (second part). Especially in the second part, the focus will be on the Parliaments of the European Union and its Member States. The two parts are strictly intertwined: the class (in the morning) is devoted to the analysis of the readings, while the seminar (in the same afternoon) is dedicated to some legal texts, often in a comparative perspective. The methodologies of the course are multiple: readings of Legal Theory, Constitutional Law, Political Science and Political Philosophy are proposed to the students and the seminars follow mainly a Comparative Constitutional Law methodology (also with attention to parliamentary practice, whenever possible).
