6 In October 2011 the European Commission published a new policy on corporate social responsibility It states that to fully meet their social responsibility, enterprises should have in place a process to integrate social, environmental, ethical and human rights concerns into their business operations and core strategy in close collaboration with their stakeholders. The new policy puts forward an action agenda for the period 2011-2014 covering 8 areas, one focusing on reporting: Improving company disclosure of social and environmental information: the new policy confirms the Commission s intention to bring forward a new legislative proposal on this issue.
7 Combined reporting leads to integrated reporting For some years now, leading companies have combined their CR reporting and financial reporting, often by merging the two into the annual report.
8 South Africa's Stock Exchange is leading the way The King Code of Governance Principles for South Africa 2009 (King III) and the listing requirement of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (that all companies issue an integrated report for financial years starting on or after March 1, 2010 or explain why they are not doing so) is leading the way forward.
9 South Africa's Integrated Reporting Framework On 25 January 2011 Professor Mervyn King, the chairman of the Integrated Reporting Committee' (IRC) in South Africa, released a Discussion Paper Framework for Integrated Reporting and the Integrated Report. The Discussion Paper was open for public comment for a period of 90 days to 25 April 2011. The written comments are currently being considered by the IRC along with an analysis of the international framework and the Paper will be re-issued before the end of the year.
10 International Integrated Reporting Council Integrated Reporting is a new approach to corporate reporting that demonstrates the linkages between an organization s strategy, governance and financial performance and the social, environmental and economic context within which it operates. www.theiirc.org
11 The Discussion Paper Towards Integrated Reporting Communicating Value in the 21st Century was launched Monday 12th September 2011. It considered the rationale for Integrated Reporting, offering initial proposals for the development of an International Integrated Reporting Framework and outlining the next steps towards its creation and adoption. Its purpose was to prompt input from all those with a stake in improved reporting, including producers and users of reports. The deadline for submissions on the Discussion Paper was Wednesday 14th December 2011

14 Making the most of assurance A growing number of companies look to external assurance providers to validate and certify their CR and integrated reports.
15 It is all about Total Communication Management Companies are also quickly evolving the method by which they communicate their CR information to their various audiences. As more and more companies start to employ multiple vehicles for communication (above and beyond their printed annual report), we expect to see companies focus on developing and implementing a comprehensive communication strategy that enhances trust and value for the company within its different stakeholder groups.
