They argue that new visual media achieve their cultural significance precisely by paying homage to, rivaling, and refashioning such earlier media as perspective painting, photography, film, and television. They call this process of refashioning "remediation," and they note that earlier media have also refashioned one another: photography remediated painting, film remediated stage production and photography, and television remediated film, vaudeville, and radio. söndag 18 mars 12

... living in a condition of virtuality implies we participate in the cultural perception that information and materiality are conceptually distinct and that information is in some sense more essential, more important and more fundamental than materiality... söndag 18 mars 12

The term new is also surprisingly uninterrogated. Those debunking the newness of new media often write as if we could all agree on or know the new, as if the new were not itself a historical category linked to the rise of modernity. The new should have no precedent, should break with the everyday, and thus should be difficult, if not impossible, to describe. söndag 18 mars 12
The Internet was not new in 1995, the year it arguably became new. Its moment of newness coincided less with its invention or its mass usage... but rather with a political move to deregulate it and with increased coverage of it in other mass media. We accepted the Internet or new media as new because of a concerted effort to make it new, because of novels, films, television news programs, advertisements, and political debates that portrayed it as new, wondrous, strange. söndag 18 mars 12

... the book explains the engine that has catapulted the Internet from backwater to ubiquity and reveals that it is sputtering precisely because of its runaway success. With the unwitting help of its users, the generative Internet is on a path to a lockdown, ending its cycle of innovation and facilitating unsettling new kinds of control.
IPods, iphones, Xboxes, and TiVos represent the first wave of Internet-centered products that can t be easily modified by anyone except their vendors or selected partners.

politics of code
... the assumptions of the information or creative society. One of the most common of these is the argument that incentivation can encourage individual creativity and hence economic growth. Thus the motivation for the artist, musician, designer or writer is explained purely through their desire for profit; to stimulate their creativity and innovation more intellectual property rights (IPR) legislation is required. The argument for a creative economy can therefore be used to cast everyone in the unlikely Thatcherite model of onedimensional profit-motivated entrepreneurs rather than complex and multifaceted human beings. söndag 18 mars 12
Additionally, there is built into much of the legislation a bias towards an understanding of creativity through the creative acts of lone genius, singularly creating works out of nothing. But as we must constantly remind ourselves, behind every musician, composer or author there is an army of teachers, friends, peers, producers, editors and managers who all contribute in different ways to the final artefact. No woman or man is an island and creativity is always a collective achievement. söndag 18 mars 12
