Project Internationalization of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME). The purpose of this project is to increase the possibilities for international growth in SME s in order for them to increase their competitiveness and also increase their ability to employ more people. Being part of a region with many production companies, this project wants to promote production oriented companies. A large number of these companies only sell in Sweden or in the Nordic countries. By increased export they can increase their market but it should also contribute to a higher level of product and production development. It should also lead to more employment. The activity we want to realize is to create a cluster of production SME s in our region. Within the cluster we will run information meetings and start an export education program. When the level of export knowledge has increased, the cluster will employ one or more export sales resources which will be shared within the cluster. Preferably these resources can come from local business education programs. Also other kinds of experts like in credit control management will be connected to the project. The cluster will participate in European trade shows outside Sweden. The results from this project should allow the participating companies to find a solid base as exporting SME s. An increased turnover and profit as well as more people employed are the goals. Participants: Anette Olsson, Ljungby Börje Cronvall, Vetlanda Mikael Gustafsson, Regionförbundet Jönköpings Län Stefan Lind, Regionförbundet Jönköpings Län Ola Gustafsson, Aneby Tore Lindström, Tranås

Local model to support the development of social enterprises and social innovations. The high unemployment, especially among young people and people with a foreign background, is one of Småland-Blekinge s major challenges. In both regions there are several initiatives to create a more positive development, in particular by supporting the development of new and existing businesses, support the employment of young people through collaboration with industry, support entrepreneurs among youth, immigrants and women, as well as action to make the region more knowledge intensive through education and training. Actions that have not yet been emphasized are the development of social enterprises and social innovations. The European Commission has pointed out the development of social enterprises and social innovations as two of the priority measures to decrease unemployment and social exclusion in the EU. However, so far the development in this area has not been great. For instance, according to surveys carried out by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth Tillväxtverket, Blekinge is one of five regions with the least amount of social enterprises in the country. Efforts are needed in this area to create a greater variety of practitioners and services in the social sector that contributes to more businesses and complement public work integrating activities. The purpose of this project is to establish a local model to support the development of social enterprises and social innovations. This will be carried out through analyzing legal framework and procurement policies as basis for recommendations, identify public organizations suitable for hiving-off, develop business plans and models.

Increase the density of high-skilled workers and engineers in SME within the manufacturing industry Problem formulation The level of personnel with higher education within the SME manufacturing industry in our region is often low. In particular there is a low density of skilled engineers. There is also a limited tradition of collaboration between local SME and academia in our region. Together these factors have negative implications for the competitiveness of local SME and their conditions for finding innovative solutions and adding a higher value to their products. Purpose: Maintain and support competitiveness within SME by increasing the conditions for innovative solutions and refinements of the manufacturing process. Consequences: Stagnation in the development of the local business community Undermining of competitiveness both regionally and for local SME Consequences for regional growth High risk exposions for SME i.e. There is often a sensitivity within local SME for fluctuations in the economy.

Reasons: It is hard for local SME to find and recruit the right competence. (i.e. it can be difficult both to find and attract engineers to SME) Local SME are not interested in hiring engineers. They often find it hard to motivate and se the long term value in hiring personnel with a high educational level, for example engineers. None or limited tradition of collaboration between local SME and regional universities and researchers. Often local SME do not have the resources to develop research and innovation units of their own. (Collaboration in the area of research and innovation is therefore needed) Activities Meeting places between researchers/engineers and local business communities create a joint centre for research and innovation for the SME in the region offer opportunities for researchers to work and meet the SME:s within the local business communities at the centre Exchanges between regional universities/students and the local business community Arrange study visits and possibilities for thesis and dissertation projects for engineer students at the regional universities Group members: Kiirsti Lindhagen Camilla Wallin Kupferberg Torbjörn Håkansson Emmy Harlid

Promotion of a geographical destination consisting of more than one administrative unit Governance structures can limit the long term development of an geographical area if the area belongs to more than one administrative unit. When it comes to tourism, cooperation is well established. This is not the case when it comes to promotion of a geographical destination in order to get people and businesses to locate in the area. There are difficulties in cooperation over the administrative borders caused by territorial thinking, lack of long time planning and economical and administrative structures. The consequences of the difficulties are limited development of the area, economic stagnation and loss of income. One practical example is low availability in public transportation inside a geographical area belonging to different governances. The purpose of the project is to develop trans-regional cooperation in order to promote the attractiveness and development of a geographical and economical area that consist of more than one administrative region. The project activities include environmental analysis, study visits to get inspired by good examples outside Sweden, formation of new platforms for dialogue and cooperation and creation of long term strategies and visions for the geographical destination.

Demosite Oskarshamn Demo Site Oskarshamn is a joint initiative between industry, government and academia to exploit the region's potential for innovation and energy and environmental innovations. The project will be implemented over 2.5 years with the aim to further develop the region into an international demonstration site in environment and energy. The project Demo Site Oskarshamn aims at further develop the region's innovation system and position Oskarshamn as a leading European region for demonstration and commercialization of energy and environmental technology. Demonstration, which today is one of the most neglected features of innovation systems, can thus be made available to facilitate market introduction for new innovations. The project will improve the conditions for renewal and innovation by: 1. Provide a complete environment and structure for research, development, testing and demonstration of new technologies and methods in the energy and environment 2. Identify and attract knowledge and innovation flows to the region (people, technology innovations and capital). 3. Improve collaboration within regional innovation
