NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SCHEDULE OF SERVICES This Wednesday, March 9, is Ash Wednesday. On this day Christians are marked with ashes as a sign of our desire to make good use of the season of Lent to turn from sin and to grow in our faithfulness to the Gospel. Ashes will be distributed on Wednesday, March 9, during the Masses and Prayer Services listed below. 7:00 am Mass 8:30 am Mass 12 Noon Scripture Service 3:30 pm Scripture Service 4:30 pm Scripture Service 7:30 pm Mass If you work in the area we encourage you to let your fellow employees know of our schedule of services. Also, please share this information with your friends and neighbors. 2011 LENTEN REGULATIONS Lent is a time for prayer, fasting, and charity in order to prepare for the renewal of our baptismal promises at Easter. The practice of penance forms a necessary part of this preparation. The Church gives us the following regulations to help us make the season of Lent a particular time of penance and preparation for Easter. 1. Ash Wednesday (March 9) and Good Friday (April 22) are days of Fast and Abstinence. 2. All the Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. 3. A Day of Fast means that only one full meal is permitted. Two smaller meals may be eaten. There is no food taken between meals. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast, though others are encouraged to fast. 4. On a Day of Abstinence no meat may be eaten. Those 14 years of age and older are obliged to abstain from meat. The Code of Canon Law allows the pastor to dispense in individual cases from eating meat on a Friday during the Lenten Season. 5. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence substantially, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 6. Catholics should go to Holy Communion at least once between the First Sunday of Lent (March 13) and Trinity Sunday (June 19). If necessary, they should celebrate the Sacrament of Penance. 3 SPECIAL ASH WEDNESDAY COLLECTION This Ash Wednesday, March 9, we will have a special collection to support the Archdiocesan Priest s Retirement Fund. Archbishop Myers has authorized this collection as a way to ensure that this program, which provides a modest retirement benefit to priests who have served the Archdiocese faithfully for many decades, will continue to have adequate resources to meet the needs in the years ahead as more priests become eligible to retire from active ministry. The people of this parish are always generous, and we thank you for your support of this special collection. OPERATION RICE BOWL "A Good Practice for Lent!" Operation Rice Bowl is the Lenten Program of Catholic Relief Services. Millions of Catholics join together through Operation Rice Bowl and reach out to those who are less fortunate and face a daily struggle with hunger and poverty through prayer, fasting, learning and giving during the Lenten season. Once again, Saint Joseph Parish will join together to participate in the Lenten Tradition of Operation Rice Bowl. The students of the Religious Education Program and St. Joseph School have been given Operation Rice Bowl material. We invite the parish community of St. Joseph s to join in this Lenten program of giving. Operation Rice Bowl will take a new approach at our parish this year. Instead of taking an individual Rice Bowl box, we will have a Parish Rice Bowl box. The Parish Rice Bowl box will be placed at the main entrance of the church and another will be placed in the lower church. Each week during Lent when you come to celebrate Sunday Mass you will place your sacrifice in the Parish Rice Bowl box. These offerings will be brought up to the altar during the Offertory procession. In addition, during the Prayer of Petition, we will remember those in need. Throughout the Lenten Journey, we will be reminded to pray, fast, learn and give as a way to reach out in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world. We hope this new approach will keep the meaning of this project alive during the Lenten Season. At St. Joseph Parish, Operation Rice Bowl is coordinated through the Religious Education Office. All donations are due to the Religious Education Office by Monday-April 18 th. Your donation not only reaches around the world, but also helps those in our own area. 75% of the donations received are given to Catholic Relief Services, which helps to fund food security projects overseas. 25% remains in the Archdiocese of Newark to help support local hunger and poverty alleviation efforts.
