Our mandate Create a national overview of the area family care of older people Gather, structure and disseminate knowledge & experiences in the area Stimulate and support development work & knowledge transfer regarding carers situation Contribute towards higher quality & productivitiy within health and social care Take into consideration international experiences & research results.
Whose a carer? Three quarters of all care for older people is carried out by carers A quarter of those aged 55+ years of age help older, sick and disabled people (650 000 people). first group, (3%) provide help and support daily or several times a week to a spouse/partner who live together in their own home, usually aged 75 84 years of age and equal numbers of women and men (83 000 people). second group, (6%) help a relative, close friend, neighbour or work colleague daily or several times a week, mostly women (166 000 people). third group, (15%) help someone outside of their own home, once a week or more seldom. A slightly younger group without any gender differences (415 000 people). (Johansson, 2005, Szerbely 2007)
Carers needs information, education & support Information & education about: Practical caring skills Relative s illness, common problems & treatment Different kinds of help and support available, benefits, assistive devices and home adaptations Coping strategies and resources Support that focuses on: Someone understanding to talk with Access to respite care Practical help with nursing tasks A good, suitably adapted home environment Needs change over time Experienced carers can be seen as experts regarding their own caring situation Hanson et al 2008
