Part 1 The north-western part of Enköping Municipality is primarily an agricultural area, but it is also home to large areas of woodland and the winding river Örsundaån. The characteristic features of the landscape are its cultivated valleys and more elevated woodland areas. Not so long ago, these valleys were filled with water and they still flood in places when the watercourses fill with meltwater. Here and there, the esker Enköpingsåsen rises up like a giant, undulating snake. Masses of gravel have been extracted from the esker and the gravel pits look like huge wounds in the stretched out body of the snake. The plains around Fjärdhundra are called Marstallen and were once one of Uppland s largest areas of water meadows. The meadows have been drained and the area has become arable land, with hardly a single building to be seen. This is a landscape with lots of space, wide open vistas and many ancient byroads. The winding roads are great for cycle tours and the Uppland Trail, which runs through the area, is excellent for hiking. 6

Photo: Enköping Municipality Experience the spring greenery in Hårsbäcksdalen. Hårsbäcksdalen AA1 Hårsbäcksdalen is a deep ravine that was created when the flowing waters of the river Örsundaån carved their way through Enköpingsåsen. The area is lush, verdant and teeming with life. The tall ostrich ferns down by the rippling water at the bottom of the valley give you the feeling of being in a jungle. There are plenty of trails and small bridges that invite you to explore the ravine. There are informative signs that describe the unusual plants to those who are interested. Keep your eyes peeled and see if you can find any rare plants Whether you are interested in flora or simply want to go for a relaxing stroll among the hazel, oak and lime trees, Hårsbäcksdalen is a rewarding destination. Even in early April, the rare and fragrant February daphne blooms, producing red-violet flowers on its bare twigs. The common hepatica bloom a little later, along with the wonder violet and a sea of wood anemones. Small birds such as the blackcap and wood warbler twitter among the emerging greenery. The floral display continues through the summer, with baneberry, touch-me-not balsam, enchanter s nightshade and many more. In autumn, all the broad-leafed trees explode in a fireworks display of yellow, orange and red. In winter, you can see the whitethroated dipper sit by the open water and dive down to the bottom of the river for food. The nature reserve, which is mostly within Heby Municipality, is well taken care of and is well signposted from the main road. There is a large car park and several rest stops with fire pits, woodsheds and toilets. 8
Altuna Local Heritage entre and School Museum AA1 Altuna Local Heritage entre is located in the village of Fröslunda. The local heritage society arrange events such as National ay celebrations and Midsummer parties in this charming, well-preserved farm environment. Take the opportunity to visit the centre on one of these occasions, as coming in to the building is a real experience. It is decorated in keeping with the time and the walls are painted in fantastic patterns and colours. The house was built in the 1840s and from the outside, you can admire the beautifully curved bargeboards in a Rococo-inspired shape. The parish s first schoolhouse from 1848 is next to the local heritage centre. This is now a respectfully renovated school museum containing a large number of fine old objects associated with schooling. The museum is open in conjunction with events at the local heritage centre, but visits at other times can also be arranged with the local heritage society. The Water Tower in Ådalen AA1 Just after the turn of the 20th century, a revolution took place in the Altuna area. That was when the railway between Enköping and Heby-Runhällen arrived, with its halt in Ådalen. Suddenly, there were entirely new opportunities to communicate with the wider world. A community grew up around the railway, with retailers, tailors, cobblers, a post office and a dairy. The new buildings were built in the Art Nouveau and National Romantic styles of the age. So that the steam locomotives were able to complete the stretch between Enköping and Runhällen, they needed to take on water at the half way point and a water tower was built. The trains are now long gone and the tracks have been torn up. However, the water tower remains as the most obvious memorial to this epoch. It is a magnificent Middle Ages-inspired brick construction, which sits by the side of the road through Ådalen. There is a water tank at the top of the tower in which, it is said, the railwaymen used to bathe. The local heritage society have set up an exhibition inside the tower with objects linked to the railway that can be seen through the windows, while there is a sign outside that has more information about the railway. This is where the steam locomotives took on water. Photo: Katja Jahn 9
Photo: Enköping Municipality The god Thor on a hard fishing trip. The Rune Stone at Altuna hurch AA2 One of Sweden s most interesting rune stones is located in front of Altuna hurch. The runes on one side of the stone tell the story of Holmfast and Arnfast, who were burnt to death, but it is the carvings on two of the other sides that make the stone unique. On one side, there are three scenes depicting figures associated with Nordic mythology. At the top is a figure, the god Heimdall, who guards the bridge between the world of the gods and that of humans. In the event of danger, he blows his horn, Gjallarhorn. A figure on a horse is visible below, Odin on the horse Sleipnir. At the bottom is the image that is responsible for making the Altuna Rune Stone so widely known; the god Thor catching fish. Thor is holding his hammer, Mjölnir, in one hand and a fishing line baited with an ox head in the other. The gigantic Midgard Serpent is snatching at the bait and mighty Thor is forced to resist so forcefully that he trampling through the bottom of the boat. This is an illustration of a well known Old Norse story that has been preserved to this day thanks to the Icelandic writer Snorre having written it down in the 13th century. This was two hundred years after the rune stone was carved, which shows the strength of the oral tradition The third side of the stone depicts a fabulous rune stone animal. It is a lion, an early hristian symbol. Lions appear quite often on rune stones, but in this image, the lion is being attacked by a ferocious eagle. This motif appears on no other rune stone and can be interpreted as saying that those who erected the stone held on to their old gods and vigorously resisted the new religion. 10
Skattmansöådalen AA2 The call wow, so beautiful is hard to avoid when you travel around in Skattmansöådalen. There is a meandering river in the middle, a ravine that is really steep in places, fields, meadows with grazing cows and sheep, some farms and above it all, a large open sky. Skattmansöådalen Nature Reserve has something special for every season. In spring, the meltwater streams rushes through the old vaulted stone bridge, while yellow star-of- Bethlehem, anemones and cowslips cover the ground. In summer, the ruins at Ytterkvarn are a pleasant spot for a picnic. Towards autumn, there are plenty of berries and mushrooms in the expansive woodlands on the north side of the valley. In winter, there is both downhill and cross-country skiing. At Ytterkvarns bro, at the far end of the valley, there is a waterfall that was used as a power source for many years. An ironworks was built here in the 18th century, when Swedish iron was world-renowned for its high quality. The water powered the hammer. harcoal piles in the surrounding woodland supplied the furnaces with charcoal. An entire community grew up around below the falls and some of the stones from the walls can still be seen in the grass. The red building at the top of the hill is the only one building that remains of the works. This is the supervisor s residence from the 1790s. There is a riverside environment at the well-looked after rest stop that stirs the imagination. The Uppland Trail passes through here; take the opportunity to walk a little along the well-marked path, for example up to the ski slope. There and back is a walk of just under three kilometres through a pastoral idyll. The ski slope in Skattmansöådalen is the highest in Uppland, with a vertical drop of 52 metres and a slope that is 270 metres long. Skiing in Skattmansö on a sunny winter day with the wonderful view over the valley is a marvellous experience. There are two lifts, a slope for sledging, barbecue sites and you can take a coffee break in the warming hut. ross-country ski trails are also made starting here, one of two and one of five kilometres. The slope is run enthusiastically by volunteers. Pukberget BB3 Pukberget is a place that brings fantasy into play. There are lots of enormous moss-covered stone blocks at Pukberget, as if thrown around by a giant. There are several small caves among the blocks. You can climb into the largest, Pukbergsgrottan. We know that this cave was used for a long time because ancient relics from the Bronze Age have been found in there. The area is a real Eldorado for all adventurous children and adults. Some words of warning though; the rocks are steep and angular, with lots of cracks and holes. Use your judgement and appropriate shoes when climbing them. To get to Pukberget, leave the car at the car park by the road between Åloppe and Hammarby. There is an information board that shows you where to go. Unfortunately, trees brought down in a storm have made some of the path difficult to negotiate, but it is possible to find a way through. Some care is encouraged here as well as there are some upturned trees and dead, standing tree that are in a poor state. 11
Not just in the summer suggestions for active outings Have you experienced the joy of canoeing in a still bay at sunset or cycling down a winding gravel road with the wind at your back? Have you hunted for treasure among blocks and stones or figured out unknown signs on a map? Sometimes it is fun to challenge yourself and do something totally new. The following suggestions guarantee you a successful day and memories that last a long time. ycling The air smells of all the flowers of early summer, the birds are demanding your attention and look, what a cute lamb Getting to know an area on a bike is something completely different to driving through it in a car. Exercise and fresh air are on the house. You don t need to have either an athletic body or an expensive bike to cope with a one-day outing of 20 kilometres. A cycle tour on a lovely spring day or a clear day in autumn is just as much fun as in the summer. There are plenty of byroads in pretty much the whole of Enköping Municipality and you can use the map to plan a tour of a suitable length. There are few boring stretches and plenty to see. Most of the smaller roads have little traffic on them and the landscape is easy to cycle. Two suggestions are the area east and southwest of Örsundsbro, but a tour around Trögden is lovely, as long as you avoid the road Boglösavägen, where the hard shoulder is narrow and many of the cars are driven fast. Fishing Lie in wait for the monster pike or just potter about after small fry. Whether you are a seasoned fisherman or just want to stare at a bobbing float, you have good chances of finding nice fish. The fishing in Lake Mälaren is free as long as you use hand-held equipment. You can catch perch, zander and pike. In many places, the banks are lined with reeds, which can make it difficult to fish from the shore, but it is possible to find good spots at Koffsan, Fagerudd and Härjarö. There is a variety of rules in the municipalities other watercourses. 12
Kayaking and canoeing Much of Enköping Municipality is characterised by the proximity to Lake Mälaren. Sweden s third largest lake is perhaps its most varied, with many bays and islands. A simple and pleasurable way to discover Lake Mälaren is to go kayaking. If the weather is nice and there s not much wind, a wonderful day awaits you as you glide through the water. You ll soon start feeling body parts you barely knew existed. Find an attractive rock or beach and recharge the batteries for more adventure with a barbecued sausage. You can also canoe in the river Örsundaån, for example from Örsundsbro, via Lårstaviken, down to Kulla. Geocashing Treasure hunting with GPS is a simple description of geocaching. There are geocaches hidden throughout the entire world, both in towns and the countryside. Once you have registered at geocaching.com, you can download coordinated to caches that you want to look for. There are also apps you can use. The treasure itself is often a plastic box containing a logbook and small items. If you want, you can take an item and replace it with something else of about the same value. The point of geocaching is both the excitement of the hunt and discovering beautiful and interesting places that are well worth a visit. There are several hundred caches hidden in Enköping Municipality alone so you have many adventures ahead of you. Hitta ut o you like to discover new places at the same time as undertaking a bit of a challenge? In which case you should have a go at finding checkpoints with HittUt Enköping. You just have to collect a map from the Tourist Office or library and get going. Some checkpoints are easy to find, others more difficult. There are several located in Enköping s parks. If you want, you can register your checkpoints at hittaut.nu and compete for prizes. The great thing about HittaUt is that you are given a destination for your walk or run, even if you don t know the town at all. orientering.se/provapaaktiviteter/hittaut/enkoping 13

Härledgården BB2 The local heritage centre Härledsgården is an old-style farm with red-painted buildings and a large guardian tree in its courtyard. It is located on a small rise with a fine view; the whole valley can be seen if you walk up to the top of the hill. Härledgården is a nice place to visit at any time, but is naturally at its best when all the buildings are opened up for some kind of event. There are grandiose Midsummer celebrations, with a magnificently dressed pole, musicians and joyous round dances. 14

Karleby ourthouse BB1 Karleby ourthouse is visible at a distance from Road 70, appearing like an alien bird among the farmhouses on the plain. The light-plastered building with its hip roof, crowned with a clock tower was brought into use in the winter of Trials were held in the building for two hundred years and there is a dungeon in the building s cellar. One of the many who were jailed here was Elg-Kajsa, who was the last person to be sentenced to death in the courthouse. She had mixed arsenic into the bread and poisoned her husband, daughter and mother. She was beheaded at the execution site at Bärby Wood, five kilometres towards Sala in June There is a café in the courthouse that is open on summer weekends. It is nice to sit in the sun outside the courthouse and consider the motto carved in marble above the entrance. It is in Latin, but says o what is right and fear no one. A short walk in the surroundings is the perfect way to round of your coffee break. This is a pretty little village beside the small river, where you can be astonished by the enormous vitality of the large-leafed plant butterbur. Karleby ourthouse, Residence for law and right. 17 Simtuna hurch BB1 Simtuna hurch is right by Road 70. Its construction began in the 13th century, but it also carries the traces of many later periods. The graveyard is large and resembles a park. This is a place where you can get away from the noise of the road and find peace and quiet among the tall Port Orford cedars. Fjärdhundra Baths BB1 Fjärdhundra Baths is located on the outskirts of the community of Fjärdhundra. It is a heated outdoor baths with three pools, changing rooms, sauna and a kiosk. The pools are heated using solar panels and the water temperature is always at least 25 degrees elsius. It is pleasant and family friendly, with large lawns and both a tennis court and a beach volleyball court. Small children have their own pool. In addition, there is a 25-metre pool and a smaller teaching pool. A two and a half kilometrelong floodlit exercise track also starts at the baths. Skutter s Fort BB1 Towering over the area is Skutter s Fort, a large prehistoric fort from the Iron Age. Turn off at the ancient relic sign, park behind the outhouse and continue up the steep forest road. Skutter s Fort is one of around 150 ancient forts in Uppland. People came here for protection against enemies during times of trouble. The fort was a safe place for both people and animals. The stone ramparts that surround the fort is up to two metres high and the walls are double in places. The walls were the base of a strong timber palisade with parapets and arrow loops. In emergencies, man and beast could survive a longer siege in the fort thanks to their being several cellars and water holes. There is now not much left, apart from the walls, to show what the fort looked like when it was in use. There are no traces of buildings or ancient battles. It is a tranquil place with rustling pines and barren stone slabs. Perfect for a picnic The fort is a place where the imagination can run riot and it s easy to lose track of the time when playing cowboys and Indians. A little surprisingly, there is a large number of legends associated with this place that stirs the imagination. Around these parts, it is said that the fort was once ruled over by someone called Skuttersgubben. 17
Photo: Mats Thorburn The old grave pit has been given a new life. Torslundagropen BB2 Torslundagropen Nature Reserve is an old gravel pit from which enormous quantities of sand, gravel and stone have been extracted. What is left behind is a wound in the landscape that appears at first glance to be completely desolate. But appearances can be deceptive, the dry environment is home to plants and animals that need open sand and gravel. This is a type of nature that has become increasingly rare in our modern landscape of forestry and agriculture. Uncommon bees and butterflies do well in the warm and sunny position, as do plants that require dry, poor soil. A pond has been created at the bottom of the pit. This acts as a refuge for frogs and newts, which have difficulty finding good habitats in the modern landscape. Walking around the pit s desert-like environment makes you think of a spaghetti western by Sergio Leone and the unusual place remains long in the memory. There is a steep path up to the top of the esker running along the edge of the pit. Up at the top, you can park yourself at the picnic table and get out your snack. The expansive view over the valley of the river Örsundaån is captivating. 18
Vånsjöåsen och Vånsjöbro BB2 Standing on the top of Vånsjöåsen on a sunny spring day is so beautiful that it almost hurts. The birch trees ethereal foliage contrasts with the symmetrical forms of the dark junipers and tussocks and purple pasque flowers bloom at your feet. It is easy to imagine what it once looked like when the whole valley was a large sea bay and Vånsjöåsen was a lush island. It is hardly strange then that our forebears, two thousand years ago, chose to bury their dead in this place. Located high and in the open, the cairns and burial mounds signalled that: this area belongs to us No one who arrived down by the water could have avoided seeing the memorials to the dead antecedents. Vånsjöåsen is now an attractive and easily accessible nature reserve; a perfect place for a picnic, with opportunities to study both various forms of grave and plants such as sticky catchfly and multiflowered buttercup, in addition to the wonderful pasque flowers of spring. If you want, you can also walk through the idyllic village of Vånsjöbro. The mills here have been milling since the Middle Ages and over time the village became a focal point of the area, with its tannery, mill, sawmill, dairy and shop. Most of this is now gone, but the tannery building still dominates the village street. And don t miss the water spirit that plays in the rippling water by the old arched stone bridge. Expansive views and easily hiked pastures on Vånsjöåsen. Photo: Mats Thorburn 19
Photo: Sara Arvidsson The mark for Upplandsleden. Hiking Hiking is one of the best and simplest ways to discover a landscape. You don t need any previous knowledge, equipment or to be in especially good shape physically everyone can hike. You get time to think and discover everything large and small along the way: rare plants, shy animals and the memories of past generations. The noise of the traffic is remote, the peace and quiet is broken only by the birdsong, the wind whispering through the trees and maybe one or two woodpeckers. You deserve a break from the daily grind, by yourself or with the whole family. 20
You don t need much equipment to go hiking. The most important are your shoes, good, worn-in hiking boots or trainers. If it s been wet for a long time, it might be a good idea to wear Wellington boots. Bringing binoculars is fun, as is a map. And don t forget something to collect berries and mushrooms in nature s larder is well-stocked. There are plenty of varied and easy to hike areas around Enköping. If you feel comfortable navigating yourself, you can follow marked trails. The longest is the Uppland Trail, which stretched through the whole of Uppland. From the shore of Lake Mälaren at Södra Trögden, you can hike to the natural beauty of Skattmansöådalen and further north. The walk takes you over Enköpingsåsen, through flat plains and rolling landscape covered with woodland. There are trails in several places that offer you the opportunity to take a shorter round trip. If you want a longer walk in Enköping, you can choose Hälsans Stig, which starts at Åpromenaden. It is six kilometres long and takes you through the centre of the town and several parks. There is no danger of getting lost on the Uppland Trail, the trail is marked with orange rings on trees or posts and there are detailed descriptions at upplandsstiftelsen.se and in the app Upplandsleden. Photo: Mats Thorburn 21
The Torslunda Trail BB2 A hike of around seven kilometres is a pleasant way to experience both Vånsjöåsen and Torslundagropen. This is a circular trail that links to the Uppland Trail and takes you along paths, farm roads and short stretch of road. Start and parking at Vånsjöåsen Nature Reserve. Härnevi hurch och Rotbrunna BB2, 2 Härnevi hurch is idyllic. Leafy broad-leafed trees and well-tended lawns surround the small, white-plastered church from the Middle Ages. The church stables are still there on the other side of the road and in the summer, you can drink coffee and eat homebaked biscuits in the red-painted parish hall by the outdoor seating area s cast iron furniture. The café is run by young people from the area who don t just bake, make coffee and provide table service, they also act as knowledgeable guides in the church. The walls and ceiling of the church are crammed with paintings. Albertus Pictor decorated the church with biblical figures, snivelling trolls, saints and exotic animals at the end of the 15th century. For many generations of Härneviites, Samson s lion, to the left in the chancel, was the closest any of them ever came to such a wild animal. The churches in Härnevi and Härkeberga, just five kilometres from one another, have some of Sweden s, and the world s finest medieval paintings. Take the opportunity to visit both churches There is evening sun by the tarred clock tower from the 18th century. A perfect place for a peaceful picnic. Why not continue along the road through Rotbrunna? This is the height of how one pictures the ideal Swedish village, with wellpreserved houses with decorative woodwork and glass verandas. The annual village market in June is a good time to visit this old row village. 22

Rune stones and medieval churches. Rolling wheat fields and glimpses of the water. Expansive views and lush woodlands. This is what the countryside around Enköping has to offer. Take a break from the daily grind and discover the country close to you. You will find high-class artisanal food and there are plenty of cafés and eateries. Many of them are included in the White Guide or have won medals at the Swedish artisanal food production championships. Spend the night at a bed & breakfast or rent a cottage for a few days. Relax in the sun or go for a hike. ycle or book a horseriding course. There is plenty to choose from when you want to spend a few days in the country. Many of the local businesses cooperate with one another in the associations Fjärdhundraland and Mälarlandet. Together they can give you countryside experiences you will never forget. 23
Ancient burial grounds There are many ancient graves and burial grounds in Enköping Municipality. They are normally located close to the settlements of the time as it was important to bury the dead close by. Archaeologists often find the remains of settlements close to burial grounds, but there is nothing to see above ground. The burial grounds were important cult sites and centres of power, where the ancestors were worshipped and the gods presence was felt. People probably returned to the graves time and again and conducted special ceremonies. The graves have many different appearances: cairns, stone arrangements of varying shapes or mounds of varying sizes. Stone arrangements are the most common and were made during the Bronze Age ( BE) and the whole Iron Age (500 BE 1050 E). They are flat constructions, often round, but can also be rectangular or triangular. Sometimes they have a distinct edge made of larger stones, sometimes only individual stones can be seen on the surface of the soil. When the soil is removed during an archaeological investigation, the graves appear to be carefully constructed from a mass of stones of the same size. Towards the late Iron Age ( E), people begin building more burial mounds. The higher the mound the higher the status. A good example if this is Blot-Sven s Mound, which was built very visibly by the large fording place over the river Sagån. Maybe you ve seen a mound with a hole in the top? Many graves have been plundered. This can also mean that there has been a burial chamber with a wooden roof that has gradually rotted away and collapsed. We don t know much about prehistoric religion. There are no written sources that can tell us about the belief systems in Scandinavia in the Bronze Age and early Iron Age. Nevertheless, we know more about the pantheon of the Viking Age. The majority of contemporary researchers believe that the Vikings religion has a heritage that stretches a long way back in time, although the gods perhaps had different names and characteristics. The most common burial ritual was to cremate the deceased s body. It was probably thought that the soul was set free by the consuming fire and passed over to a new existence. Fire is associated with fertility and rebirth in many different cultures. The burned bones were dealt with in different ways. They were often collected in a box or pot that was then buried in the grave, but at other times they were simply scattered among the stones of the grave. Sometimes they were washed, sometimes crushed into small pieces. It appears that it was often sufficient for just a small portion of the bones to end up in the grave. There were almost no skeletal burials at all during the majority of the Bronze and Iron Ages. These only became more common at the end of the Viking Age, with the influence of hristianity. 24
Äsåsen och Äs puss 2 Äsåsen is covered in trees, but here and there offers good views of the surrounding plains. It is peaceful up here. The wind whistles through the pine and spruce, the ground it covered by purple heather and ethereal grass which is perfect for walks. An attractive hiking trail of around two and a half kilometres helps you to discover the esker. On the top, the trail follows the route of an old path that has been used for millennia. It leads gradually to a large, stately burial mound called Nunneklostret (the convent). There are several prepared rest stops along the trail so remember to bring your picnic Next to the esker is a small lake, Äs puss, which has an attractive rest stop by its shore. Take the weight off for a while and enjoy the bird-life and the view over the open fields. This type of lake is called a kettle pond and was formed when the ice sheet melted just over 10,000 years ago. This is what happened: A large iceberg became embedded in the sediment from the melting ice. When the embedded iceberg eventually melted, a pit was formed in its place. The pit was filled with meltwater and became the small lake. The lake is shallow and ice forms quickly here in winter. When it freezes, an ice-skating track is usually ploughed up on which you can skate. 25
Part 2 Fastbo ragmansbo Ådalen Sjöbo Larsbo Salinge The landscape in the north-eastern part of the municipality is dominated by open valleys separated by wooded areas. M To the east, you can catch glimpses of the shimmering water of Lake Mälaren in the bays Lårstaviken, Gorran and Oxen. A mass of small roads run all over the place, making it easy to create a circular route for a car or bike tour. If you make a wrong turning, you usually still J end up in the right M place in the end. Gölja Svinn Rune stones and small medieval churches indicate the ancient heritage. The area around Örsundsbro has one of the highest densities of churches in Sweden; in some cases you can see from one church from the next. Sagån Stångby Vad The name Örsundsbro indicates that this was a place where you could cross the river Örsundaån, originally using a ford and later over a bridge. This clearly became an important mercantile centre to which those who lived in the archipelago sailed in order to trade grain for salted fish. The autumn market at Michaelmas attracted people from near and far as there were good transport possibilities and there were no city taxes to pay. 28 Hagalund BB4 Hagalund Nature Reserve is an old cultural landscape that has been shaped by smallscale agriculture over a very long time. Large groves of hazel, ferns and moss-covered stone blocks give the area a somewhat dreamy atmosphere into which the rays of the sun are filtered through the foliage. A marked hiking train takes you around the nature reserve. Along the route, you encounter grazing cows, the reserve s most important employees, who are responsible for maintaining the characteristic features of the environment. The entire area exudes peace and tranquillity; if you re looking for a restful place, this is it. Uvberget and Alsta Bathing Area BB3, BB4 Uvberget is a small nature reserve surrounding a hill just beside the lake Alstasjön. This is one of the highest points in the area, providing a fine view over the lake and the surroundings an ideal destination for enjoying the view, the nature and the coffee you brought with you. In the past, beacons were lit here to warn of approaching danger. The fire was seen from far and wide in the area. Uvberget is a small area, but there are still many different areas to discover. The barren hill, with occasional stunted trees contrasts against the massive stately oaks in the old pastures. The southern slope, partially covered in large stone blocks is leafy with elms, oaks, cherry and hazel and is frequented by all sorts of animals. In spring, the common hepatica and wood anemones give way to lilly of the valley, corydalis and bloody geranium. The car part and a sign with information about the reserve are located at Alsta Bathing Area. The entrance the reserve can be reached by walking about 50 metres along the road towards Örsundsbro. Alsta Bathing Area is a pleasant municipal bathing area with changing huts and piers. There is a good children s bathing area inside the piers where the water doesn t get too deep. However, it is said to be possible to dive in from the outside of the pier. This is a popular bathing area, but it is seldom crowded as there is plenty of space and large lawns on which visitors can spread themselves out. 29 Photo: Enköping Municipality Örsundsbro s history as a place for trade and business is still evident today. For a community with slightly less than two thousand inhabitants, there are an extraordinarily large number of shops, with a wide and varied range of products. Salnecke astle and Gryta hurch BB4 Salnecke astle is a tall, white-plastered building with a unusually steep roof. It is a very well preserved castle from the 17th century. Older Swedes may recognise it from the TV series Selambs, which was filmed here in Why not take a walk along the idyllic road to Gryta hurch. As with many other churches in Uppland, it has no tower. Instead, there is a bell-tower on a mound just outside of the graveyard. If the church is open, you have to take the opportunity to go in and look at the lovely paintings. 29
Kappen Retail Museum BB4 Sweden s first cooperative shop was started in Örsundsbro. This took place as long ago as the 1850s and was at the instigation of the county governor Robert von Kraemer, who lived in the area. Lagunda Local Heritage Society has set up a small museum with a old-fashioned shop in a shed down by the river. Here you can learn more about both the cooperative and the history of Örsundsbro. The building is an old grain shed, but is in the same location and looks similar to the original shop. Örsundsbro inema BB4 In the summer, you can experience what it was like to go to the cinema in the past at Örsundsbro inema, but the films shown are anything but antiques. The building exudes cinematic feeling. Films were being shown here as long ago as the 1920s. That was when Edvard Johansson added a cinema to his carpentry workshop. The films were shown by a travelling machinist who provided both the projector and the films. The cinema s era ended in 1961, unable to compete with the television. The cinema sank into a deep slumber until the middle of the 1980s, when a association was set up and began renovating the dilapidated premises. The carpentry workshop is also still there and you can arrange with the cinema association to have a look around. The red cinema building is a few hundred metres from the centre of Örsundsbro, along the road through the community towards Uppsala. The latest films in an auditorium from Garbo s time. 31 Photo: Enköping Municipality heeses ageing in an earthen cellar. Sweden s Tuscany Fragrant freshly baked bread, richly marbled meat, fresh vegetables and fine cheeses. There are plenty of small-scale food producers in the area around Enköping. Fjärdhundraland, based in the countryside around Enköping, is being developed as a destination centred on real food, combined with cultural and natural experiences. It s easy here to go on an outing that is centred on food. There a loads of farm shops, pick-your-own fruit farms and cafés where you can buy fresh produce direct from the farms. In several places, you can meet the animals; see the pigs rooting around, the hens pecking and a cow taking care of her calf. This makes it easy to see that happy animals go hand in hand with fine tasting and nutritious food. Enköping Municipality is located in an ancient cultivated landscape where farmers have been working the fertile clay soil for more than a thousand years. There is a long and unbroken tradition here, with the farms still being located on the same ground they were in the Iron Age. Sometimes, they have been handed down from generation to generation for centuries. And now, more and more new rural entrepreneurs and artisanal food producers are moving in, working with passion and enthusiasm to produce and process meat, vegetables and dairy products. When you buy from a farm shop, you don t need to think about original labelling or additives. Usually you meet the producer themselves who can answer your questions and love to tell you about how the food s journey from farm to table. These are people who are passionate about good food, personal service and a living countryside 31
Rune stones messages from the Viking Age Fateful Viking expeditions to far-away lands, the construction of new roads at home or just a few names and a prayer to remind you of a dead family member. On rune stones we can read about people who lived long before we did. They still remain a thousand years later, like messages from a vanished age. The runes describe Inga, Toke, Gudfast and many more people who erected stones as memorials to their nearest and dearest. We find out about Brune, who died in enmark, just after having been baptised and Åsger, who joined Frögder s army and fell in Livonia, but also about the boastful Holmbjörn, who erected a stone about himself and indicated that he was both eloquent and generous with food. Many rune stones were grave stones that were erected in cemeteries that have now been destroyed. Other stones can be linked directed to journeys. Rune stones are often located very visibly by the ancient road network in the same place where they were erected long ago. The thought is mindboggling, but it means that when you see a rune stone by a road, it pretty much means that the road is from the Viking Age, if not older. Litslena, Nysätra and Torsvi are just a few examples of places where we are literally travelling in the footsteps of Iron Age people. The rune stones were memorials, but there purpose was also as a means by which rich families could clearly display their status and are to which they belonged. Some acted as legal documents and spoke about inheritance and ownership. The custom of erecting rune stones was spreading at the same time as hristianity. The majority of rune stones in Uppland were made between 1050 and There are 179 known rune stones in Enköping Municipality. Almost all rune stones have been erected by families who have embraced the hristian faith, but there are also pagan stones, for example the well-known stone at Altuna hurch. Many of the stones went astray after just a hundred or so years. They were used to build church walls, as in Kungs-Husby hurch, or became thresholds. Rune stones were the oldest hristian monuments. Several generations after the end of the rune stones, well-healed relatives perhaps wanted to point out that they belonged to old hristian families by donating their ancestors stones to the hurch. The fact that the stones were also excellent building materials was surely not seen as a disadvantage. 32
Erik Jansson s Memorial Stone BB3 In a meadow, a little to the west of Biskopskulla hurch, stands the memorial stone to Erik Jansson, in the place where he was born in This local man had a short and dramatic life that had an impact on the fate of many. He became the leader of a religious sect and immigrated to Illinois in the United States in order to found a colony; Bishop Hill. Between 1846 and 1854, 1,500 Janssonists emigrated to a life filled with discipline and strict rules in the thriving colony on the other side of the world. The Swedes, who were skilled farmers, craftspeople and entrepreneurs, created a utopia of a classless and religious community. But Erik Jansson s tough rule caused many conflicts and the prophet was murdered in 1850 by a member of the colony. Ten years later, the sect dissolved the Janssonist faith became a footnote in the history of religion. Bishop Hill remains a well-visited memorial to Swedish emigration. Several colonial buildings have been preserved and many people of Swedish heritage live in the area. Turn off the road between Landsberga and Biskopskulla hurch as the small sign. After a short walk through pretty pastures, you can take a break by the stone, pick wild strawberries and reflect on Erik s remarkable life. Bishop Hill Museum BB3 The Bishop Hills Society s museum is located in an old bakery a hundred or so metres from Biskopskulla hurch. The exhibition is simple, but contains a lot of information about the Janssonists and their fate in Sweden and the United States. There are images, trial documents, a collection of literature about Janssonism and Bishop Hill and a mass of objects from the time in the Swedish colony. There is an exhibition next to the museum that contains portraits of the colonists and paintings from old Bishop Hill. 33
Photo: Katja Jahn Lift the latch and come in. Kvekgården BB3 Low grey log cabins squat around a smallholding. This is Kvekgården, or Mother Lotta s Farm as it is known after its last owner. Here you can see something as uncommon as a completely preserved farm in its original place. The buildings are from the middle of the 18th century and the environment has remained largely unchanged since the beginning of the 19th century. Mother Lotta, who took over the farm in the 1860s, was a cautious woman who didn t change things. When she died in 1926, the farm remained as a monument to a vanished age. Luckily enough, the local heritage society realised the unique value of the farm and bought it. The farm is of a type called central Swedish, which means that the farm buildings surrounding a courtyard are divided into a farmhouse and a building for animals. The whole farm gives you an old-fashioned impression and there is lots of atmosphere in the buildings and sheds. Lagunda Local Heritage Society organises activities such as National ay celebrations and a hay harvest festival. In summer, the farm is usually open on weekends. 34
Härkeberga hurch and Kaplansgård 3 Härkeberga hurch is located up on a rise in the cultivated landscape. An Iron Age cemetery beside the church indicates that this place was central to the area even before construction of the church began around Externally, it looks like many other Uppland churches, but as soon as you step into the porch, you realise that this is something out of the ordinary. The walls and ceiling are covered with medieval paintings full of figures. One image depicts the Fall, when Adam and Eve were driven out of Paradise. By the stairs up to the church attic is a witch on her way to Blåkulla, while the devil himself rewards the witch Sko-Ella. Before you step into the body of the church, take the time to admire the door. This is medieval, with forged fittings, surround and keyhole. It was once even more magnificent, it was covered with red fabric that the wrought iron stood out against. Back to the paintings. The walls and ceiling of the body of the church are swarming with figures. All of the important biblical scenes are depicted, but there are also fantastical beings, a camel and musicians with accurately depicted instruments. A favourite is the prophet Jonah, who is diving in the open mouth of the whale. The paintings were executed by Albertus Pictor and his assistants around The reason why the paintings are so well preserved is that the vault was never whitewashed over. There is a clear difference between the images on the walls, which have been whitewashed. Although some colours have faded or vanished, we get a good impression of the colourful, overwhelming experience the medieval person encountered when they entered the church. Think about life in the dark farm cottages pretty much absent of images and colours. What a contrast it was then to walk into a high-ceilinged church that sparkles with colour and fantastical figures Albertus, who had an impressive reputation even in his own time, cannot have been cheap to employ. The 15th century farmers in Härkeberga must have entertained a great desire to decorate their church. A stone s throw from the church lies Härkeberga Kaplansgård. This is one of Sweden s oldest preserved vicarages, with fully seventeen thatched, red-pained wooden buildings from the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century. The buildings enclose a courtyard in two sections. The chaplain was an assistant priest, but was also a farmer. The residence shows what it looked like in a simple vicarage in the 1840s. The farm is usually open on Saturdays and Sundays in the summer and is well worth visiting. Beside the farm is Hjältastugan, which is the hub of the well-known events in Härkeberga such as Midsummer celebrations. Photo: Enköping Municipality Pastoral idyll in Härkeberga. 35
Photo: Enköping Municipality Medieval painting of Albertus Pictor. Albertus Pictor The 15th century painter Albertus Pictor worked for over forty years and his picture series can be found in 36 churches. He was also a pearl embroiderer and skilled musician. This Jack of all trades rejuvenated the art of painting and introduced a realistic style in which he depicted characters and the psychological interplay in an entirely new way. All of this made Albertus into one of the most significant figures in the history of Swedish art. 36
Five of this master s churches are in Enköping Municipality. If that s not enough, the paintings in two of them, Härkeberga and Härnevi, are among his absolute best and most well preserved. The other three, Löt, Husby-Sjutolft and Östersunda, are not in such good condition. We don t know where Albertus Pictor came from, but a good guess is that he trained in a German monastery. The first time he is mentioned in Sweden is 11 February 1465, when he is received as a burgher of Arboga. The fact that he was allowed to call himself so means that he was a fully trained master of his profession. In a self-portrait from this time, he depicts himself as a worldly young men, dressed in a long, well-cut coat, green-blue tights and pointed shoes. In 1473 he moves to Stockholm and marries Johan Målare s widow Anna. This was called preserving the widow ; a new master was granted entry into a city in this manner by filling an empty space in the profession. He was often able to take over a house, as well as a workshop and customers. The widow, in turn, was ensured support. Albertus and Anna had a long life together, Albertus didn t die until 1509 and Anna lived until Albertus was called painter and pearl embroiderer. This means that he was a master of both professions and had journeymen and apprentices in both. In summer he painted churches, in winter he worked on church vestments and other textiles in his pearl embroidery studio in Stockholm. gave the images a final touch when he painted highlights, shadows and details that brought the figures to life. You can see a development in the paintings; in his youth, he paints ornate, elegant figures and when he grows older they become more exuberant and folksy. The people and details are more realistic and full of character. He took inspiration for his images from books of German woodcuts, particularly one called Biblia Pauperum. The motifs that would be included were decided in consultation with the church s priest. Some scenes always appeared, while others can only be seen in a single church. The most important images were placed in the east of the vault, with the very foremost above the altar. Anywhere there was a little space left over, fantastic beasts, exotic animals and other extraordinary figures can be found hiding. In the western parts and the porch, Albertus painted moralistic scenes so that the parishioners would be given something to think about as they left the church. For example, these images show how dice games lead to knife fights and manslaughter or the wheel of life spinning towards death. Albertus painted al secco, which means on dry plaster. This means that the pain is on top of the plaster. Air and light have affected the pigments and changed the colours over time. Red has become black and lemon-yellow brown-grey. Other colours have faded or almost completely vanished, for example blue and violet. Albertus had journeymen and apprentices to assist him in the churches, but it was he himself who designed the series of images and drew the outlines of the figures in black paint. The assistants coloured the images and painted runners and borders. Albertus 37

Trestensbacken 3 Trestensbacken is also known as Kälsta Grave Field, after the farm that lies just to the north of the grave field. A large rune stone that describes how it was erected to the memory of Ågöt who lived in Kälsta stands by the road next to the farm. As a result, we know that the farm was named Kälsta as early as one thousand years ago The graves in Trestensbacken are significantly older than that; they are around two thousand years old. There are many different grave forms, among them many standing stones. Most exciting are three menhirs that stand up at the top of the hill. They are flanked by two large mounds. Together they form a totally straight line. Think about what they could have been doing here Litslena hurch 3 In the middle of a crossroads sits Litslena hurch, as it has done since way back in the 12th century, when construction of the church began. It is a beautiful church with lots of nice features to admire. The icing on the cake is the beautiful altarpiece with sculptured figures, made in Lübeck in the 1480s. Nybylund and Kulla Bathing Area 5 You can take a beautiful hike in Nybylund Nature Reserve. An easy to walk and wellmarked path starts at the car park and leads you through an arbour of bundle-shaped hazel bushes down to the shore of Lake Mälaren. In spring, the ground is covered by anemones, lilly of the valley and other ethereal spring plants. An autumn walk is also nothing to be sniffed at, with a carpet of fiery yellow leaves. The spotted nutcracker is often seen here on the lookout for hazelnuts and there are lots of twittering small birds. In the past, the area s vegetation was shaped by grazing animals. After not having been grazed for some time, there are now Highland cattle who ensure that the area retains is special character. If you want, you can eat your packed lunch in Nybylund, but another good option is the pleasant bathing area at Kulla, which is a little bit south of the nature reserve. Lawns, a little sand, some rocks, a pier and a barbecue area provide the ingredients for a successful swimming outing. Outside of Kulla Bathing Area, you can see Biskops-Arnö, which is in Håbo Municipality. This island is also well worth a visit as it has plenty of natural and historical sights. 39
The nibbled landscape our grazed cultural heritage People have always lived in an interplay with nature and have shaped it through their way of living. In the past, the principal occupation for most people was acquiring food for the day. They cultivated their fields and had grazing animals that provided meat, milk, wool and leather. Long use of the land, created a varied landscape with a rich flora and fauna. The animals that grazed in woodlands and pastures ensured that grass and bushes were kept down. Plants such as catsfoot, common rockrose and common milkwort that have the ability to make frugal use of nutrients and cope with being grazed did well in the poor soil. It was not just the grazing itself that contributed to the diversity of species, the tramping of the animals hooves also made it easier for new plants to grow and seeds were spread in the animals fur. 40
Photo: Enköping Municipality onservation officers at work. Blooming pasture is very much appreciated and is regarded by many as something typically Swedish. It is now increasingly rare, there now remains only a fraction of the meadows and pastures that existed in the 19th century. There can be species of plants and grasses per square metre in a meadow. If the land stops being maintained by grazing or haymaking, a small number of species take over and out-compete the others. An increasing number of people are realising that pastures and their high level of biodiversity is necessary. Many of Enköping s farmers are doing their bit. There are large areas where grazing animals are doing a fantastic nature conservancy job, but more grazing animals are needed so that more pastures don't become overgrown and gradually turn into woodland. Grazing animals don t just keep the landscape open, they also provide tasty meat. By choosing Swedish meat and milk, we are helping to preserve nature s biodiversity at the same time as we get to enjoy good produce. In addition, we are contributing to helping farmers continue working and living on the land and caring for our collective cultivated landscape. Naturally, it is not just various kinds of plants that benefit from the grazing animals. Insects and butterflies thrive in the open flower-rich land and birds in turn thrive where there are lots of insects. And there are large numbers of special beetles and flies living in just one single cow-pat. 41
Hjälstaviken 4 It is never totally silent at Hjälstaviken. The calls of the birds that hang around the vast wetland are heard constantly. And it s not strange, around 265 different species have been observed here. Hjälstaviken is among Sweden s finest areas for birds, including common crane, osprey, little gull, marsh harrier, ruff, a mass of geese and several songbirds. Rare visitors are often seen here. On a sunny winter day, you may be lucky enough to see all three of sea eagle, golden eagle and rough-legged buzzard. The first spring birds turn up as early as the end of February, then all the geese arrive, resting in the coastal meadows in their thousands. In the first half of May, it is the waders turn and you can hear common, great and jack snipe calling. In June, the corncrake s krek krek, the great bittern s bottle blowing and the water rail s sometimes groaning, sometimes shrill urgent shriek can be heard. As early as the beginning of July, you see the waders on their way south and in the autumn, all the other migratory birds stop to rest at Hjälstaviken. In November, it is once again time to look out for winter birds. Hjälstaviken s birds attract both young and old. Photo: Enköping Municipality Hjälstaviken is an El orado for birdwatchers. Especially in spring and autumn, the spotting scopes are lined up side-by-side, particularly by the bird tower in Hårby on the left side of the bay or in the fine hide out in the reeds by the foot of Kvarnberget. But Hjälstaviken has even more to offer. In spring Parnassen is a wonderful place with carpets of yellow anemones and wood anemones under the tall, majestic broadleaved trees. The woodland area is an old part of Ekolsund astle Park and if you look for it, you might get a sense of the star-shaped system of avenues. A hiking trail on footbridges starts at Parnasses and goes through the whispering reeds right across the bay to Kvarnberget. Walking through the reeds is a fascinating experience, giving you a marked sensation of being suddenly along in the world. From the top of Kvarnberget you have an expansive view over the lake and surrounding countryside. This is also a great place for a picnic, but it is quite steep in places so keep an eye on the children There are a large number of plant species in the pastures around the lake. ropwort and quaking-grass grow in large quantities, along with common milkwort, maiden pink and cowslip. The insect fauna is also said to be interesting and species-rich, but observing this perhaps requires specialist knowledge. So as not to disturb the nesting birds, there are restrictions on access in the area from 15 March to 15 August. You have to keep to the marked hiking trail that runs around the bay. It is an eight kilometre walk if you want to go all the way around. 42
Photo: Enköping Municipality A gaggle of geese take a break in Hjälstaviken every spring and autumn. Birdwatching Who hasn t gone wild with delight when the blackbird starts singing on an early spring morning or in the pale dusk light? A sound that announces, more than anything else, that spring is here again Listening to the mating call of the black grouse or hearing the robin s tune from the woods, seeing cranes come flying out the mist or, the icing on the cake, seeing a falcon strike a pigeon. Birdwatching isn t just about hunting for species, it s more about collecting experiences. The birdwatcher uses birds to follow the eternal rhythms of nature; the birds arriving one after the other in spring, the breeding season, summer with the chicks testing out their wings and then departure time in autumn before the calm of winter again descends upon the country. Everyone can enjoy looking at and listening to birds, you don t have to be an ornithologist. The most important thing is to be attentive to the signs in your surroundings; a small movement in the bushes or in the sky, a motionless buzzard on a post by the side of the road. When you learn to detect the birds that can be found all around you, your interest is quickly aroused. The better at distinguishing species you get, the greater the experience becomes. The best times are in spring and autumn, when many birds are migrating; roughly 300 million reach Sweden every year. In spring, the early morning or dusk are best. A spring morning in a place rich in bird-life where the air vibrates with different calls is an almost religious experience. By Midsummer, the concert has died down. If you want to go birdwatching in autumn, you don t actually need to get up so terribly early. Being there about thirty minutes to one hour after sunrise and onwards is fine. The best type of weather depends on which species you want to see. Binoculars and a bird book are good to have when birdwatching. on t forget to bring something to sit on, warm clothes and, in particular, a tasty packed lunch. 43
Ekolslund astle with its park, arboretum and tavern 4 Ekolsund astle was King Gustav III s favourite castle when he was rown Prince. A joyous social life was lived here, with magnificent parties, tournaments and theatre. The castle is surrounded by a magnificent park, with features including fourteen tree-lined avenues This is also home to one of Sweden s largest arboreta, i.e. a scientifically organised collection of trees, with around 160 different species. The castle is a conference and party facility, but you are welcome to walk around in the park on your own. If you think the castle looks familiar, that may be because it has been the location for several TV series and films in recent years. Ekolslund Tavern is in a highly visible spot next to Road 263. It was built in 1770 at the instigation of King Gustav III and, aside from providing food and lodging, was also a mail station. Nylada Bathing Area 4 Not far from Ekolslund astle is Nylada, which is a pleasant bathing area. It has lawns, a sandy beach and piers. Mångelshögen 4 Take a forest walk and look at a notable memorial site A large mound of twigs and branches tell a tale of wicked sudden death in times past. What is now a little forest road, was once a well-frequented main road called Tingsvägen. Once upon a time, two costermongers were walking along this road to the market. A costermonger was a female trader who carried her wares on her back. The women fell out with one another and it ended so badly that one was beaten to death by the other. To prevent the murder victim from rising from the dead, travellers began throwing a trig or a branch onto the site. A large mound was soon created. This custom is called offerkast (literally, victim throw) and was once a common occurrence in Sweden where someone had died an unnatural death. Aside from twigs, you could also throw stones or coins. We do not know when the murder of the costermonger took place, but there are offerkasts that have proved to be many hundreds of years old. The forest roads are blocked off from all directions so it s not possible to get here by car. The roads are so narrow that they have not been included on the Visitors Map, but if you zoom in on the municipality s digital visitors map, or look at another detailed map, it is easy to find. Whether you come from the east or the west, you have to go south towards the motorway at the crossroads. 44

Irsta Part 3 Strömsberg The peninsula to the south-east of Enköping is called M Trögden. It is characterised by the lush nature M of Lake Mälaren in which fields are interrupted by a little woodland and a glimpse of the lake here and there. Really large farms are a characteristic of the Lake Mälaren landscape and a special type of manor house landscape has grown up. The cultivated areas are expansive, while avenues, parks, planted broadleaved woodlands and, in particular, the manor house buildings themselves are build in a way that creates an artistic park landscape. The area around Boglösa is one of Sweden s finest for rock carvings. In the Bronze Age, this was an archipelago and figures were carved into the flat rocks that sloped down towards the water. The carvings are often in places of natural beauty, in particular Hemsta Hagar Nature Reserve. 48 Grönsöö Tourist Route 2, 3, 4, EE3, EE4, FF3 Photo: Enköping Municipality Here you go small roads through the open cultural landscape in Trögden, the brown sign with white flower shows you are on the right track. A tourist route has to provide you with beautiful experiences that are over and above those found along an alternative route to the main road. This really is the case for Grönsöö Tourist Route Instead of driving via E18, you follow the winding byroads through the open cultivated landscape in Trögden. This will take you longer, but you are guaranteed to become much richer in terms of beautiful experiences. The brown road signs with a white flower on them show that you are on the right road. Grillby 3 For a long time, Grillby was a large farming village in Trögden s agricultural landscape. When the railways conquered Sweden just after the middle of the 19th century, the circumstances of the community changed. A railway halt would be built here Soon there was both a railway station, a station hotel and an emerging business community. A range of new industries were established, among the more unusual was the workshop that made footballs. In its day it was one of the few approved manufacturers of balls for matches in Sweden s top league, Allsvenskan. Many years have now passed since a train stopped in Grillby, but both the station building, which is typical of the period, and the railway hotel remain, although now being put to other uses. A heritage walking tour that takes you round Grillby starts from the square by the railway station. A series of signs tells you more about Grillby past and present. Övre Rickeby 3 If you want to take a walk and look at rock carvings at the same time then Övre Rickeby is a good option. From the car part there is a well-tended path that leads you to four sites with carved figures. There is a sign at each carving that tells you about the images you can see there. On one rock there is a large warrior figure, on another a mass of pigs, horses, sheep and cattle. 48
Rickeby 3 Just next to the road Boglösavägen, there is a large rock with carvings. There are over 30 ships, but the interesting image is a deeply carved depiction of a tunic. As a sewing pattern it shows what Bronze Age clothes might have looked like. The carved soles of feet and shoes that are together on their way down the rock are also exciting. This carving is perhaps the most easily accessible of all the carvings in the Boglösa area, a ramp helps you to get close, even if you have difficulty walking. 51 Rock carvings Enköping Municipality has one of Sweden s largest rock carving areas within its boundaries. When the images were hewn into the rocks about 3000 years ago, the waterline was about 20 metres higher than it is today. The landscape was like that of an archipelago. The rock carvings are symbols and depictions on flat rocks or loose blocks of stone. In spite of the name, the figures haven t been carved, instead they have been chiselled out or hacked in with the help of a stone hammer of some sort of hard type of stone such as diabase or quartzite. The images afford us glimpses into prehistoric society sometimes they are easy to interpret, sometimes incomprehensible, but they are always deeply fascinating. The carvings in Boglösa was made during the major rock carving period in the Bronze Age ( BE), when people had become settled farmers. Ships, circular figures, people and domesticated animals are common motifs. There are a large number of small, round, chiselled out depressions in the rock, known as cup marks. Some of them are painted red and relatively clear. The carvings are seen best in the morning or evening when the sun is low and the images appear as shadowy figures. The religion of the Bronze Age is largely unknown to us, but researchers believe that the sun worship and fertility cults were important elements. Perhaps the decorated rocks were meeting places where various ceremonies were conducted. Religion played a dominant role in people s lives, the majority of objects and remains from the Bronze Age appear to have functions and meanings that are not simply everyday. The cup marks have been used as part of the popular belief system and superstition until relatively recently. oins and small items were placed in the marks as offerings to fairies and other spirits. The marks were smeared with grease during special ceremonies in order to drive out various diseases. As late as the 1920s, a priest in Veckholm saw cup marks that gleamed with grease and lard and was told stories about wise old women who snuck away to the carvings in secret. He didn t get to experience this himself, this is the sort of thing people don t want to reveal to the priest. 51
Hemsta hagar 3 o you find it difficult to choose between nature and culture? In which case, you should visit Hemsta and kill two birds with one stone because this is home to one of Uppland s most figure-rich rock carvings in the middle of an easily accessible nature reserve. A perfect place for a coffee break or a picnic Hemsta Nature Reserve is characterised by an ancient open grazed landscape with sparsely wooded pastures interspersed with old fields. The landscape is flat and there are often rocks poking through the surface. The exposed rocks that have been worked smooth by the waters of long ago are often covered by fantastical images from the world of the Bronze Age. Not all are painted and may therefore be difficult to detect. The open dry meadows are very interesting for those with an interest in botany. The flowers indicate that people have been working the land for a long time. Flowers that are characteristic of grazed land such as common rock-rose, meadow saxifrage, pasque flowers and wild thyme. The land is grazed by sheep and cows in order to conserve the dry meadow flora. A short distance into the reserve lies Hamstahällen, Uppland s largest area of rock carvings, with close to 500 figures. These include 200 ships, as well as animal and human figures, ringed crosses, soles of feet and cup marks. Boglösa Bronze-Age Landscape Nature and Heritage Trail 3 A nature and heritage trail starts at the information site in Hemsta and this is also a detour on the Uppland Trail. The trail leads you through open pastures with grazing animals, an old village and a little woodland. The signs tell you about the nature and cultural heritage along the way. The trail goes past Stora Rickebyhällen and ends at the rock carvings in Övre Rickeby. 52

Floral splendour It is somewhat magical in spring when the floor of the woods is covered with common hepatica or wood anemones and the pastures are lit up by cowslips. The short period of each year in which the nature really bursts into life has a special place in our northern souls. Just as wonderful is the lush greenery of the high summer. There are plenty of destinations to visit if you want to discover everything that is germinating. You don t need much equipment to go out looking for flowers, except maybe a magnifying glass and a good guidebook. owslip is one of our most loved spring flowers. This plant thrives under the large broadleaved trees on the slope below Altuna hurch. Photo: Enköping Municipality 54
Photo: Enköping Municipality The pasque flower flowers as early as April. The richness and diversity of the flowers and plants in our countryside is huge. Some we recognise, some we barely notice. For many of us, the majority are anonymous, lacking both names and properties. Recognising and being able to name plants becomes a way to expand your knowledge of different flower and become observant of them. Of course it s more fun to say today I saw the first coltsfoot than today I saw he first little yellow flower, do you know what I mean? The rich variety of nature in Enköping Municipality offers many botanical experiences. In the far north, where the coniferous forest spreads out, there are elements of more northerly species. The Lake Mälaren landscape with broadleaved woodland and oak-covered slopes are substantially warmer and the calciferous clay soil provides the conditions for a different type of vegetation to the that of the moraine soil of the coniferous forest. The flora on the open, grazed esker ridges is something entirely different to the lushness of the climatically favourable islands in Lake Mälaren. Beech plants that grow and thrive along the shores of Lake Mälaren at Grönsöö don t survive id they are moved five kilometres or so inland to Kungs-Husby. Vånsjöåsen has a large stock of pasque flowers, which attracts visitors at the beginning to the middle of May. At the same time, the display of spring flowers is overwhelming in Hårbäcksdalen, as well as in the nature reserves at Nybylund and Hemsta Hagar. Parnassen at Hjälstaviken is well known for its carpets of wood and yellow anemones. 55

Brandskogsskeppet Rock arving 3 There are many rock carvings to look at, but if you have to choose one, it is Brandskogsskeppet one of Sweden s largest and most remarkable Bronze-Age carvings. Park the car in the car park by the road and continue along the path that leads into the woods. There follows a walk of just under ten minutes, but the woods are beautiful and the goal well worth stretching your legs. If you come here in late summer or autumn and like mushrooms, bring along a basket chanterelles and ceps both thrive here. It is delightful to get away from the sound of cars, apart from the birds it is totally peaceful. After about 800 metres, you suddenly arrive at a large exposed area of rock, steeply inclined down towards the fields, the Bronze- Age sea. There are many carvings in the rock, but the image that draws the gaze is the mighty ship with six paddling figures. The boat is over four metres long. There is a human figure underneath that is lifting the ship at one end. Who is carrying the ship and why? Where is it going and who is the human figure who is stretching his arms into the air worshipping? It is easy to spend a long time here and fantasise about the carving s hidden meaning. 56
Fridegårds minnesstuga 3 Jan Fridegård ( ) is considered one of Sweden s premier working-class authors. He was born and brought up in the Enköping area, where his parents worked as farm labourers. Experiences from his childhood often appear in his novels. He is esteemed for his refreshing language and his accurate depictions of characters and settings. The family lived in Gåde for six years when Jan Fridegård was a child. The local heritage society have established a memorial hut here containing information about Fridegård and his writing. The hut, which is an old smithy, is in a picturesque setting in a sheep pasture. It is a nice place to take a break and you get to know a great deal about the author. Perhaps the visit inspires you to head to the library to borrow one of Fridegård s many books? Bredsand 2 Bredsand, or Bresse as it s known colloquially, is the municipality s largest outdoor bathing area. As early as the beginning of the 20th century it was an esteemed and popular recreation area. People camped here and a children s holiday camp was established here in 1935, which is now Bredsand Youth Hostel. Enköping residents of all ages have memories of summer adventures at Bredsand. The site by the shore of Lake Mälaren provides many opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Bredsand has pretty much all you could want on a warm summer day: a wide and shallow sandy beach, diving tower, piers, children s bathing area and large lawns. The area is rather large, with space for several thousand visitors. In spite of this, it can still become crowded on sunny days. Bredsand is a very popular destination, with excellent services, but its size means that it can be perceived as a little anonymous. If a dip in the lake isn t tempting, Bredsand is an excellent starting point for activities in the woods and on land. The Uppland Trail passes by the car park. You can choose to walk in towards the town or out in the direction of Härjarö. Fine nature experiences await and perhaps a well-filled mushroom basket. In the winter it s quieter, but just as nice. Ice-skating tracks are ploughed on the ice of Lake Mälaren and there are lots of crosscountry ski tracks. Summer holidays in Bredsand. Photo: Mats Thorburn 57
Photo: Katja Jahn The woodland paths lead to a beautiful spot with a view over Svinnegarnsviken. Fageruddsåsen 2 Fageruddsåsen, which is part of Enköpingsåsen, is a wooded esker with several ridges along the top. The highest reaches 35 metres above the surface of Lake Mälaren a beautiful view over Svinnegarnsviken awaits you at the top. It is a nice spot to light a fire at the barbecue area and watch the sun go down over the shimmering water. The area by Bredsand and Fagerudd is densely built-up. The reserve, with its varied wooded landscape, is a welcome break. In particular, it is an attractive recreation area that is suitable for lovely long walks. 58
With roots in Enköping Enköping was once famous for its horseradish, but there are also famous people to remember. Anna Lindh was Sweden s foreign minister when she was murdered on 11 September Anna grew up in Hacksta outside of Enköping. She entered Enköping Municipal ouncil when she was just 19 years old and remained there for six years. Anna Lindh s Park in Grillby is a memorial to her. Johan Hakelius, writer, author and editor in chief who loves to stick his neck out, comes from Enköpings-Näs. Leif Blomman Blomberg worked as a milling-machine operator at Bahco in Enköping before he became the colourful leader of the trade union Metall and a Social emocratic government minister. There is a memorial to him in Blomberg s Park in Romberga. Blomberg s Park Ida and Elin Lanto are two gifted sisters from Litslena, just outside of Enköping. Ida is a star fashion designer and Elin is a singer. The name Israel Kolmodin is perhaps not familiar to you, but what would the Swedish school summer holidays be without the song en blomstertid nu kommer? Israel was born in Enköping on hristmas Eve in 1643 and grew up in Simtuna, 20 kilometres north of here. Ingegerd Troedsson, the Riksdag s first female Speaker, lived in Hacksta outside of Enköping. Anna Brolin, an experienced sports journalist and presenter, grew up in Enköping. Photo: Enköping Municipality 59
Fånö Park and Beech Woodland 4 Fånö is an estate with a lineage dating back to the 13th century. The park is open to the public. It has features including an 800 metre long avenue of old oaks. An easily walked winding path leads you around. The beech woodland is believed to be Sweden s most northerly and offers a colourful spectacle in autumn. The woodland was originally planted, but as the trees renew themselves, it is considered a woodland rather than just a collection of trees in a park. Fånö Bathing Area 4 The bathing area is suitable for all, perhaps especially for those with children. It is small and pleasant and is looked after by the local rural community association. There are cut lawns and a barbecue area, as well as changing facilities and toilets. Take a walk in a lush arbour. Photo: Enköping Municipality 60
Photo: Enköping Municipality Vallby hurch as additions from several periods. Vallby hurch EE3 Strangely enough, Vallby hurch is open every day. The reason being is that the aughters of Mary live just next door. This is a Lutheran order of nuns that is part of the hurch of Sweden. The church s construction began in the early Middle Ages, but the tower is a later addition. The sacristy is different in terms of both style and colour and was only built in the 1740s. Pay a visit to the church and look at the large triumphal cross from the 15th century. Vallby Radio Station 3 When you drive down the road to Koffsan, you pass a white building surrounded by high radio masts. It is the elegant modernist jewel Vallby Radio Station. When the station opened in 1938, all international radio connections were managed from here. World news reached Sweden via Vallby. For example, it was through this link that Sweden learned about the surrender of Germany in The following year, the time signal began to be broadcast from Vallby. Just before 1 pm each day all the way up to 1993, this programme give Sweden the correct time. 61
Photo: Enköping Municipality A scenic bath with rocks, sandy beach and bridges. Koffsan EE3 The scenic bathing area Koffsan has nice rocks, a sandy beach and piers. If you are looking for a calmer bathing area than Bredsand, this pleasant family bathing area is recommended. Koffsan is on a small peninsula call Husby Holme. It was an island in the Middle Ages. You can still see the stone foundations of a medieval fort, Husbyborg that was at the tip of the island. From here you can watch the maritime traffic in towards Enköping. In the winter you can drive here to barbecue in the blazing sunshine or perhaps, if the ice is safe, go on an ice-skating or ski tour along the shore of Lake Mälaren. 62
Lillkyrka Historical Trail EE3 Lillkyrka Historical Trail is an easily walked, three kilometre long hiking trail that at takes you through woodland and meadows. Along the way, you can stop at various stations and read about things like old mills and Iron Age graves that you pass by. The tour is pleasant and the signs are full of information and inspire interesting conversations during the walk. It is exciting to learn more about all the traces of past life that can be found out in the countryside if only you know where to look. A favourite is the pole that shows how high the water level has been at different times throughout history. This tangibly demonstrates the effect of post-glacial rebound and makes it easier to understand how much the landscape has changed. The historical path begins at Lillkyrka School, where there are plenty of parking spaces. Lillkyrka Exercise Track, which is floodlit and has tracks of one and a half and two and a half kilometres, starts at the same place. Veckholm hurch EE4 When you enter Veckholm hurch you understand why it is called Trögden s cathedral; the impressive nave is both higher and longer than those of the majority of rural churches. Take a really good look around the church. There are lots of interesting things to see, for example the richly sculpted and gilded altarpiece that was made in Brussels at the beginning of the 16th century. If you re lucky, you might hear the church organ, which is one of only two in the country with a chirping bird whistle stop. The choir stall from the end of the Middle Ages stirs the imagination; sitting on the worn seats, feeling the smooth wood and thinking about all of those who have sat here before you is a real experience. There are several noble coats of arms on the choir stall. The majority belong to families who owned the Ekholmen Estate, which is a few kilometres from the church. Over the centuries, the owners of Ekholmen have given generous gifts to the church and put their mark on it in various ways. The rich and powerful de la Gardie family had a large crypt and the bell tower to the west of the church built in the 17th and 18th centuries. on t miss the simple wooden cross in the graveyard by the church s western gable. It was placed here as a memorial to a farm hand who haunted the priest in a white sheet. When the priest began to read prayers and incantations, the farm hand sank down into the earth and disappeared forever. According to legend, this happened at the beginning of the 16th century. The wooden cross has always been replaced with a new one when the old one has rotted. It is said that if the cross falls over then the church will burn down There are several interesting buildings around the church. The oldest parts of the old vicarage are from the 17th century, but the conspicuous façade was built at the beginning of the 19th century. To the east of the church is the hospital, which is now a private residence. The current building is from 1798, but it is the third hospital building. The hospital came into being thanks to a donation from Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie in 1653 and functioned as a poor house, hospital and school. 63
Accessible destinations Here are some suggestions for destinations that are easily accessible. Enköping Museum There is a lift. Wheelchair-accessible toilet on the ground floor. Enköping s parks Most of the parks have benches and footpaths with hard surfaces. Fånö The footpath through the park and beech woodland is wheelchair accessible. Gröngarnsåsen and yarna There are several paths there that can easily be negotiated with a wheelchair. Grönsöö astle There are good footpaths in the park. The castle itself is not wheelchair accessible, but the exhibition space in Vagnstallet is. Wheelchair-accessible toilet. Hjälstaviken Hårby The road to the bird tower from the car park has a hard surface and is pretty flat. It is about one kilometre out to the tower. There is a toilet and picnic table suitable for people with disabilities by the car park. If you contact the county administrative board, you can arrange for permission to drive a car closer to the tower. Hjälstaviken Kvarnberget It is easy for those in wheelchairs to visit the hide out in the sea of reeds. There is disabled parking at the end of the gravel road. There is a path from there with a hard surface and a wide footbridge that is pretty flat leading out the the hide (about 800 metres). There are benches along the way. Härjarö A three kilometre long tarmac path leads along the shore and into the woods. Härkeberga hurch There is a ramp to get into the church and a wheelchair-accessible toilet by the bell tower Skattmansöådalen The shelter is accessible to those with disabilities as are two of the barbecue areas. There is a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Stora Rickebyhällen is in an easily accessible location close to the road and has a visitors bridge that allows those in wheelchairs to get close to the carvings. 64
Photo: Jacob von Ehrenheim In the park at Grönsöö there are plenty of benches and the footpaths have hard surfaces. 65
Kungs-Husby EE3, EE4 Winding roads lead to Husby village in Kungs-Husby parish. It is a small oldfashioned village with a magnificent past. In the Middle Ages it was a royal estate and a focal point for the entire area. Swedish kings travelled around between their estates and we know that Birger Jarl, Magnus III and Birger Magnusson sometimes lived here. Unfortunately we do not know what the royal residence looked like. But the church, the construction of which on the royal estate s land began in the 14th century is still there today. It is typical white-plastered Uppland church, with a shingled roof. It is worth looking a little closer at the rune stones that are built into the church wall and at the bargeboards on the porch and the eastern gable. They have richly carved leaf decoration and were made in the Middle Ages. There is an old red-painted windmill at the top of a hill in the village. From here there is an expansive view over the surroundings. The many smooth exposed rocks around the mill are an inviting place to sit for a while, but there are also tables and benches. hildren appreciate the space in which to run around. The current mill is from the 1880s, but there have been mills here since at least the 17th century. Photo: Mats Thorburn Mill with a view. The sun sets over the fields in Kungs-Husby. 66
Grönsöö astle FF3 Grönsöö astle now lies a fair bit off the beaten track, but that was not always the case. Lake Mälaren was the best and fastest means of communication and there was close connections with both Stockholm and Uppsala. By water, it is only 40 kilometres to central Stockholm and this took only about three and a half hours by steamer. The castle was built at the beginning of the 17th century by Johan Skytte, who was a member of the ouncil of the Realm. He was a teacher of the prince who would become King Gustavus Adolphus and wanted a home that befitted his status. Back then, the castle has several towers and other splendid decorative features, but these were torn down in the 18th century, giving the castle the appearance it has today. At Grönsöö you can stroll around in the park, have a coffee break in Bränneriet, look at the exhibitions in Vagnstallet or take a guided tour of the castle. You can also follow a nature trail down to bathing rocks with an expansive view over Grönsöfjärden, where there is a good chance of seeing an eagle or osprey. The castle park is open every day. It is home to one of Europe s oldest lime trees, which was planted in 1623, almost four hundred years ago Avenues, pollarded trees and winding footpaths give the park a special character that gives you a sense of the garden ideals of several epochs. own by the shore you can see a remarkable little building out in the water. This is Snäckhuset (the shell house), built in Inside the building is completely covered with shells and minerals from East Asia and a dried turtle hangs from the roof. Snäckhuset was created to decorate the park; the strolling guests could go in and marvel at the exotic curiosities. There is a stone building on the other side of the sound that resembles Glimmingehus in Skåne. This is Utöhus, which is on the island of Arnö. The building was constructed in the Middle Ages, but the stepped gables that make it look typically medieval, were not actually added until the end of the 18th century This was done to create a beautiful and exciting view from the castle park and at that time a medieval monastery was considered a suitable view. Apples are grown at Grönsöö. There is an apple market every October when visitors can buy boxes of great-tasting Gravenstein, Signe Tillisch and Åkerö apples. Torsvi hurch EE4 Why not visit Torsvi hurch, it is a beautiful place worth stopping at, even though the church is normally closed. If you re lucky and the door is open, take a look inside at the fine 15th-century altarpiece. A long time ago there was a cult site dedicated to the Norse god Thor in the parish. Tor is Swedish for Thor and vi means holy place of sacrifice or temple. Perhaps this vi was in the same place as where the medieval church now stands. It was not unusual for the new religion to demonstrate its victory over paganism by building churches on the old cult sites. Torsvi Farm is just next door. This is a manor from the Sweden s period as a great power and beautiful to look at, with its yellow-painted buildings. 67
Torsviby Grave Field EE4 If you continue your journey along the winding road south from the church, it is easy to understand why the ancient road network is considered so worth protecting. Torsviby Grave Field appears after a kilometre or so. It is the largest in Trögden, with 160 round stone arrangements, 16 mounds and several graves of various shapes such as tridents. As is often the case with ancient grave fields, this place is not just somewhere with interesting remains from a vanished age, it is also very idyllic. It is a good idea to bring a picnic blanket and a snack. The graves have not been excavated, but their appearance indicates that the dead were buried here for close to seven hundred years, from the 5th to the 12th centuries. There are significantly more people buried here than the number of graves would lead us to believe. Not everyone back then was given a visible grave marker. The grave field is grazed, so you have to negotiate a stile in order to get in. The first of the stone arrangements is seen after you ve taken a few steps, but feel free to continue up the gentle slope. The most magnificent graves are at the top, where there is a fine view out over the open landscape and you can catch a glimpse of Lake Mälaren. Härjarö EE4, FF4 Härjarö is a nature reserve that encompasses the most south-easterly peninsula in Trögden. It is an easily accessible and popular destination that is a great place for a day trip. Go out into the reserve to one of its many nice beaches, fishing grounds or mushroom spots. The nature reserve is a gently rolling coniferous woodland with many paths, several organised bathing areas and smooth flat rocks by the lake shore. The bathing area at Äppelnäsgrund is a pleasant little bay that can be reached by a short walk through the woods. You can hike for kilometres along the shore; there are several bathing areas with barbecue areas that are well-equipped with firewood. The berry and mushroom-rich ground is also home to lots of wildlife; if you are lucky, you might see both moose and roe deer. The services for visitors are good, there are lots of information signs, marked paths and car parking spaces. Of course, it s also possible to get here by boat. 68
Berries and mushrooms summer and autumn s tempting treats Going out to pick berries or mushrooms is extremely satisfying. When your basket is full it s easy to feel like a self-sufficient being, ready to withstand any disaster. This is probably our ancient instincts from the time when people lived as hunter-gatherers bubbling up to the surface. Photo: Mats Thorburn Sun-ripened wild strawberries. 69
The right of public access gives us the right to pick berries and mushrooms. However, different rules may apply if you are in a nature reserve. The equipment is simple, a bucket or a basket. Try to avoid plastic bags as they turn both berries and mushrooms into mush. If you are looking for mushrooms, a small knife is indispensable as it allows you to remove the worm-eaten parts while you are still in the woods. Bilberries, lingonberries, wild raspberries, wild strawberries, cranberries and sloes grow in the Enköping area. It is also said that cloudberries can be found in the northern parts of the municipality. Bilberries are often pretty easy to find. They thrive in the woods. If it has rained a lot, they can be found on dryer ground, but if it has not rained much, they can be found in shady coniferous forest and more marshy ground. Bilberries begin ripening in the middle of July. There are also plenty of lingonberries. They spread out in dryer woodland and begin ripening at the end of August. They can be picked up until the frost comes. Wild raspberries often grow in five to ten year-old clearings, at the edge of woodland and by the side of roads. The berries are ready to pick at the end of July, but their size and juiciness varies depending on the amount of rain there has been during the summer. Wild strawberries grow at the edges of meadows and on sunny, open wooded slopes. They thrive in old-fashioned grazed cultivated land and have therefore become harder to find as the pastures disappear. The berries begin ripening in early summer. ranberries, which are less well known, are similar to lingonberries, but grow on bogs and in swamps. The large berries lie half hidden, directly on the bog moss and have the best flavour if they are picked after the first frost or after they have been in the freezer. There are usually not so many of them, but a handful of frozen cranberries with piping hot caramel sauce is an exotic desert you won t forget in a hurry. Sloes can be found on the spiky blackthorn trees at the boundary between fields and woodland. The fruit is really hard before the frost has worked on it, but then becomes good cordial, jam, jelly or why not sloe gin? When you pick mushrooms you always have to be totally sure of what you put in your basket. As a result, many people only dare to pick chanterelles and ceps, but if you take a mushroom guidebook with you, you can expand your horizons a little. It is not always easy to know where the mushrooms are. A place that has an abundance in one year can be completely empty the next. The availability of mushrooms varies depending on the amount of rain. A rule of thumb is to look in mixed and coniferous woods that are a little older. Older forest roads for vehicles are also good places for mushrooms. In dry years, wetter areas alongside streams and the edge of swamps can be good spots, while in rainier years, there can be large numbers of mushrooms growing on pine heaths and areas with thin soil over bare rock. Avoid areas that have been cleared of trees, young woodland and pure wetlands, where mushrooms seldom or never grow. There are lots of good mushroom woodlands in the Enköping area, one example is Härjarö Nature Reserve. 70
Photo: Katja Jahn Suddenly it s there in the moss the perfect little cep. hanterelles turn up as early as midsummer, but most mushrooms start to appear in August/September. The best mushroom picking weather is a cloudy day with no rain. If it is warm, the mushrooms are quickly attacked by larvae, with ceps rapidly becoming inedible. The advantage of chanterelles and yellowfoot is that they are pretty much never attacked by insects. When out picking mushrooms, you often have your nose to the ground and are not always paying attention to where you go. Make sure you don t get lost There are also large areas of woodland in this municipality. If you are able to read a map and use a compass, these can be good to bring along, otherwise you can choose to pick in an area that is surrounded by fields water or roads. 71
Part 4 Enköping is usually called Sweden s closest town, the horseradish town and the town of parks. What you probably didn t known is that it is also one of Sweden s oldest towns. It has long been known that it was a lively market town as early as the 13th century, but an archaeological excavation a couple of years ago revealed a cobbled street that has been dated to as early as the beginning of the 11th century. This short piece of street makes Enköping just a shade younger than Sigtuna, Sweden s first town. The Middle Ages were Enköping s heyday. The town had a good harbour and was an important trading and administrative centre. A Franciscan monastery and a leprosy hospital was also built here. There were several churches in the town. Over time, the waterway in to Enköping silted up and its position as a trading centre deteriorated. Gustav Vasa s increased taxes made matters worse and the town found it increasingly difficult to hold its own. Instead, the townspeople focused on kitchen gardening and Enköping became gardening and agricultural town with small-holdings and gardens in 72
which all sorts of vegetables were grown that were sold at market in Stockholm. Horseradish cultivation began to dominate in the middle of the 19th century. A devastating fire in 1799 changed Enköping radically. When the town was rebuilt after the fire, the streets were laid out according to a neat grid system and were also made wider. Some stone building that had survived the fire remain at a jaunty angle, for example the old vicarage at Afzeliiplan and the Town Hall, which now houses Enköping Museum and the Tourist Information Office. At the end of the 19th century, Enköping became known outside of Sweden. The town medical officer, Ernst Westerlund, had revolutionised the methods used to treat mental illnesses. Patients from far and wide came here to get help and there were many sanitoria in the town. These day, the town is renowned for its many parks. The speciality is pocket parks, smaller spaces that are adapted to their position in the urban space, where plants are used to create an experience and atmosphere. 73

Traces from the Middle Ages 2, 3, 2 There are now few buildings remaining that evoke Enköping s medieval heyday. Vårfrukyrkan (hurch of Our Lady) has a dominant position up on Kyrkåsen. onstruction began in the 12th century and functioned then as a church for a larger area. Why not walk up the hill to pay the church a visit. Take a closer look at the sculpted and painted men that look like they are holding up the vault of the church. On the slope below lies the ruin of St. Giles hurch, which was built at the end of the 13th century. Klosterparken (Monastery Park), down by the river, is the site of the former Franciscan monastery. Today, it is only the foundations that can be discerned in the grass, but there is a model of the monastery at Enköping Museum. The townscape 2, 3, 2 Enköping is a pleasant little town where most things are close together. Stora Torget (Big Square) is the hub of the town, around which the central blocks spread out with their many shops and cafés. Wander round and take in the small town atmosphere and the many parks, both large and small. Pocket parks are scattered around where you least expect them. A little further from the centre, the detached housing takes over and you can find larger shops out by the access roads. Skolparken (School Park) is at the foot of Kyrkåsen and features an open-air stage. This is also where you ll find the imposing courthouse that now houses Enköping Art Gallery. A stone s throw from the square is Westerlundska Gården, with its pleasant garden hidden behind a high wooden fence. This is where octor Westerlund lived and had his medical practice. The building is now a museum where you can learn more about the doctor and his unconventional methods for treating psychological problems. The library is located down by the river and has a wellliked extension by arl Nyrén. Large windows create an attractive interplay with the tall trees outside. A little further along the river is the harbour with large red-painted grain stores from the end of the 18th century. The guest harbour is next to the grain stores and has ten berths, as well as places to park campers. Wallinska Gården on Kryddgårdsgatan is a typical example that shows how a large part of the town looked about one hundred years ago. Back then, many of the town s streets were lined with low yards with outhouses and gardens behind protective fences. The majority of these were demolished in the middle of the 20th century, but a lot of the small-town character still remains thanks to many of the buildings being low rise. 76

Practical inventions 2, 4 Perhaps you ve noticed a giant-sized adjustable spanner on one of the town s roundabouts? Or passed by Gustav Adolfs Plan and seen a statue of an older man with a pipe wrench? If so, you have come into contact with J P Johansson, who invented both the adjustable spanner and the pipe wrench in the years around J P Johansson had his first workshop in the place where there is now a statue, but he soon needed more space and moved the factory to Fanna, a few kilometres outside of the centre. Both the adjustable spanner and the pipe wrench became tremendous successes that conquered the world with the name Bahco. J P Johansson s Museum is located in a brick building in Fanna and is run by volunteers. Enköpings museum 2 Enköping Museum can be found in the old town hall that was built back in It is a municipal museum that contains exhibitions about the history of the town and the surrounding area from the Stone Age to the present day. There are also temporary exhibitions. The Tourist Information Office is in the museum s entrance hall. Varied parks B3, 2, 2 There is a focus on perennials in Enköping s parks, creating botanical splendour that returns year after year. There are over twenty parks, with everything from the large Klosterparken, with its generous lawns and river bank path, to small pocket parks interspersed between buildings. The icing on the cake is the riotously colourful römparken (ream Park), which is inspired by nature and created by the world-famous garden designer Piet Oudolf. Munksundskällan is a small park by a spring from which the town s inhabitants collected drinking water all the way up until the 20th century. A small pump-house from the end of the 18th century and the rippling waters of the pond, combined with the cherry blossom and trimmed hedges make this place a screened-off oasis. Fish, meat and vegetables were once sold by the river at Fisktorget (Fish Square). It is now a paved square surrounded by flowering trees and bushes. There are lots of peonies in Kölnbacksparken, while Pastor Spaks Park is given over to roses and clematis. 78

Flourishing street furniture B3, B5, 1 In Enköping, even the roundabouts are made eye-catching with well-composed flower beds. The choice of plants on some of the roundabouts reflects the surrounding nature. The large roundabout Ullundarondellen features a lush grove of birch. Motorists who drive into Enköping from the east are met by an avenue of Scots pine, the same tree features in the roundabout and there are also plenty of Scots pine in the surrounding woodland. At the railway and bus stations, the renowned landscape architect Ulf Nordfjell has created both Väntparken (Waiting Park) and the beds on both roundabouts. Erect junipers stand like exclamation marks and bring to mind the small islands in the surrounding agricultural landscape of which juniper is a characteristic plant. Gröngarnsåsen and yarna E1, E2 There are two fine nature areas a short walk from the town centre. Gröngarnsåsen is a pleasant, wooded recreation area, with a rich network of paths. If you like running, there is a two kilometre-long exercise track in the hilly terrain. If you want, you can end your training session at Gröngarn Outdoor Gym. From the top of the hill, there is a view over yarnas water meadows. By the open area of Himlabacken, you can see not only pasque flowers in May, but also nesting cranes and hear the distinctive call of the bittern. In winter, this is a great sledging slope. yarna is a waterlogged, open area of meadow between the hill and the river Enköpingsån. A wide wooden footbridge takes you over the waterlogged ground and there are footpaths all the way around the water meadows. The water meadows are an important environment for many species of bird and there is a bird tower in the southwestern part. The water meadows were grazed in the past, which kept them open. When the cattle vanished, the meadows began becoming overgrown, but there has been an attempt to recreate the old flora that started at the end of the 1990s. It is the grazing of the cattle, particularly their trampling, that creates the conditions for plants and animals. Gånsta Exercise Track and Brännskogen E3 Gånstagården, a couple of kilometres outside of the centre of Enköping, is the starting point for Gånsta Exercise Track, which is the municipality s longest illuminated exercise track. There are three tracks of between two and five kilometres. They take you out into the wooded terrain of Brännskogen where there are a few slightly more serious inclines to negotiate. In the winter, the tracks are turned into cross-country ski tracks, provided the forces of nature do their part. 80
Small-town life Enköping is the perfect place to enjoy at an easy, relaxed pace. The town centre is not large. Wander around randomly and you ll find both cosy cafés and small, unique shops. Take the weight off at a café where you will immediately feel at home. Most have both pleasant outdoor seating areas and cosy interiors. Enjoy the smell of fresh baking wafting out of the kitchen. Make an effort to find a really good spot and choose tasty sandwiches, a yummy bit of baking or a raw food cake. Here you will find the genuine and the nostalgic, but often with a modern twist. Allow the shopping trip to proceed at a leisurely pace. You ll find a range that has been selected with care and intuitiveness. Many of the shops are run by enthusiasts who are passionate about their business and want you to find what is best for you. Personal service is important. They take their time and are happy to help make you a satisfied customer. 81
Photo: Enköping Municipality Strömparterren Enköping s parks Enköping has taken a leading position as a garden town thanks to Stefan Mattsson, who was employed as the town s head gardener at the beginning of the 1980s. This proved to be a particularly successful recruitment At that time, Enköping looked like the majority of Swedish small towns, with ordinary parks and flower beds filled with annual summer flowers. Stefan and his staff began a long-term change programme that focused on trees and perennials. Large fields of ground-cover perennials created entirely new garden environments, while trees were planted as a way of binding the town together and creating a cosy atmosphere. The pocket parks were another innovation. Small, often unused patches of ground were turned into intimate, innovative garden spaces that make use of the character of their location. We are now able to harvest the fruits of all this labour that was begun more than thirty years ago. Enköping is home to more than twenty parks of very different types that act as a living space for their visitors; providing opportunities for play or picnics, tranquillity and exercise. These green environments provide their visitors with inspiration and knowledge. Several garden centres in the area have specialised in Enköping perennials, giving you plenty of opportunities to take a piece of Enköping s floral splendour home with you. The town s current head gardener and their staff continue to change and develop the parks with undiminished vigour and energy. The parks are only getting better and better 82

You can find out more at enkopingsklassikern.se Photo: lagsport.nu Softball, one of many sports being practised in Enköping. 83
Part 5 The area south-west of Enköping is a landscape of large agricultural estates and well-tended woodlands. As it is dissected by several busy roads, most people just breeze through the area to get somewhere else. But if you take the time to come off the main roads, you ll find small winding byroads, good berry and mushroom picking areas and one or two jewels. 84

Blot-Sven s Mound 1 In Nykvarn by the river Sagån, just by the border of Västmanland, Blot-Sven s Mound rises up. Strikingly visible from the river, it has a counterpart on the Västmanland side, Östen s Mound. Both are grave monuments from the late Iron Age. According to tradition, Blot-Sven was the last pagan king, who was killed by the hristians. The ostentatious graves functioned as sturdy evidence of which rulers and families owned the rights to the area. In the Middle Ages, the area around these two mounds, Östanbro, was an important stop on Eriksgata, the journey that the newly elected king would take through the most important parts of Sweden. The people of Västmanland guaranteed the safety of the king and his retinue through Västmanland up to the river. That is where the people of Uppland would meet them and take over responsibility. Ullunda Ford 2 ross the stream on the same stones the Vikings placed there long ago It is not easy to see today that this was once a main road. It is now a tranquil place. The road crossed the stream at Ullunda and the crossing was made safer by the stones placed on the bottom. Two rune stones were erected at the fording point in order to mark the safest place to cross. The ford was part of the medieval king s Eriksgata. Hummelsta Ancient Fort 2 Ancient forts are often in somewhat inaccessible places up in the woods, but that is not the case at Hummelsta. In the middle of the houses there is suddenly an information sign about the ancient remains. If you walk a little bit along the almost overgrown path, you soon see the stout walls that enclose the fort area. We actually know very little about ancient forts. Relatively few have been excavated by archaeologists, but we know that the forts were built over a period of more than one thousand years. They have certainly also had various uses. Some have been easily defensible places to which people fled when there was trouble approaching, others were religious sites, enclosed grave monuments or enclosures for animals. Finding the fort is not entirely simple. Turn off the road at Kyrkcentrum in the middle of the community, turn right at Åsundavägen and then left at the ancient monument sign on Borgvägen. 86
Haga ekbackar 2 There are often beautiful woodlands surrounding castles and manor houses and these are now esteemed for their mighty oaks, their broadleaved woods with rich spring flora and especially their biodiversity. The oaks planted in the country estates were not felled as intensively as the farmers wooded slopes, which is why we now, several hundred years later, have many broadleaved woodlands around the old manor houses. This is the case to the south of Haga astle, in an area that is a nature reserve Haga Ekbackar. This is home to stately oaks, lush groves of hazel, a rich display of spring flowers and a glimpse of the lake from time to time. You can hike around the reserve on Ekstigen (The Oak Path), which has a number of informative signs about the noble trees. The easily walkable hills are a reasonably short cycle away from Enköping. First take the cycle path to Haga astle and then continue along the quiet gravel road up to the reserve. Those arriving by car can reach the reserve via Road 55. Svinnegarn s Spring 2 Svinnegarn s ancient mineral spring is small and inconspicuous and the traffic on Road 55 makes itself heard, but this is a place that really has a lot to say. In the Middle Ages, Svinnegarn was a well-known name in the Nordic region. The reputation of the spring and the miraculous water attracted hordes of pilgrims who flocked to Svinnegarn in order to cure diseases and all sorts of ailments. The water was at it s most powerful on the eve of Trinity Sunday. Springs are places where offerings have been made for many thousands of years. They were considered to have magical powers and the offerings were made in order to ensure good health, peace and bountiful harvests. The first hristian priests realised that it was not possible to ban the old customs and so these rites and sacred places were made to fit into hristian festivals. Instead of making offerings to Thor and Odin, you did so to a saint. In the Middle Ages, a large crucifix stood by the spring and the church had a offering block on which visitors were encouraged to place gifts instead of throwing them into the spring. The gifts made the church rich and in the 15th century, the small parish church was expanded into a large pilgrimage church with lodgings for pilgrims in the church loft. When Sweden became Protestant in the 16th century, the atholic traditions were supposed to be wiped out, but the hurch was fighting a losing battle. People persisted in celebrating the Trinity at Svinnegarn s Spring, regardless of what priests and the powers that be said. Belief in the magical power of the spring refused to die out. Over the centuries that followed, thousands of people continued coming for Trinity. Many of them still hoped for help with diseases and disabilities, but it also became a public celebration with games and gambling, drunkenness and fights. It was not until a bit into the 20th century that things calmed down in Svinnegarn. People celebrated elsewhere and healthcare had improved. The spring is a few hundred metres south of the church. There is space to park on either side of the road; you then follow the ancient monument signs. 87
Ice-skates and skis The Enköping area is perhaps not one you would immediately associate with winter sports, but there is actually a lot to do here when the cold season comes around. Going out on the slippery ground can be a good idea on a beautiful winter day when the ice shines bright in the sun. Lake Mälaren, with its many bays and islands is a fantastic lake for activities; go long-distance skating or ice yachting, take a long walk or go fishing. Whether you are looking for peace or speed, excitement or relaxation, there are outdoor experiences for people of all ages and interests. A trip out on the ice doesn t only offer healthy exercise, it also provides attractive natural and cultural experiences. There is a lot to see along the shores of Lake Mälaren and there a big differences if you come from the lake side. Farms and villages were often built facing the water as that was the direction from which you arrived in the past, when the lake was the fastest and most comfortable route. All those who go out ice-skating or winter fishing have to have good knowledge of safety and the right equipment and you must never go alone. If you are uncertain, there are ploughed tracks at Bredsand and sometimes on Lake Alstasjön. The most important things to bring are ice prods, an ice stick and a lifeline, as well as a rucksack with a harness and a change of clothes in a sealed plastic bag. Remember to always tell someone else where you are going and don t forget your mobile phone. On unfamiliar ice, you have to make liberal use of the ice stick, especially in sounds, by headlands and under bridges, where the flowing water can weaken the ice. o you like ice-skating, but prefer not to skate on lake ice? When the weather permits, tracks are made in many places in the municipality, often next to schools. uring school holidays, ice rinks are also usually open to the public. 88
Photo: Enköping Municipality Lake Mälaren offers good ice. Sometimes it snows heavily and sometimes it is slushy like any old day. Ahead of the winter, it s not easy to know how much cross-country skiing there might be in the Enköping area. But even if there is no natural snow, there is often alpine skiing on Skattmansöbacken. The snow canons work intensively there, as long as it s cold enough, and the two lifts take you up from the bottom of the valley. You can rent alpine skis in Skattmansö and there is a heated hut with a kiosk and café. In addition to skiing, the dazzling view and the friendly atmosphere make a visit here a highlight. If there is sufficient snow on the ground, two cross-country tracks are also prepared. ross-country ski tracks are also prepared in Gånsta, Fjärdhundra, Örsundsbro, Lillkyrka, Fagerskogen, Korsängsfältet, Hummelsta and Grillby, weather permitting. It there is lots of snow, nothing beats the sensation of going directly out into the countryside and making your own tracks. New nature experiences and surprises await; suddenly you are seeing the landscape from completely different perspectives and exciting animal tracks can lead you to completely unknown places. 89
Photo: Enköping Municipality Time to find a bargain 90
Pick up a bargain at a flea market Is there anything better than turning in at a handpainted flea market sign and finding a bargain with a capital B? Maybe the cup is just like the one you drank your morning hot chocolate out of when you were young or the unusual object is just what you need to complete your collection. There are more and more of us who love to spend our free time in flea markets, looking for vintage items and reusing things in an environmentally friendly way. There best bargains are often found out in the countryside. The countryside around Enköping is no exception. Here you ll find small and large, well-established and more temporary flea markets. Some specialise in giving old things a new life, others have specific areas of expertise and focus on the very best, while some are teeming with items. Whichever variant you are after, you are sure to be satisfied. An extra bonus is the beautiful nature and countryside to enjoy en route to the next bargain. 91
Protected areas Our landscape is filled with beautiful views, explosions of colour on flowering hillsides, the hum of insects and birdsong. Some types of nature, many plants and remains of past cultures are now threatened in various ways. These are so important that the must be preserved. Photo: Enköping Municipality Solar thermal cliffs, chilling water and the cries of seabirds, lucky you who have access to a boat. Several of the destinations in this book are nature reserves. Their aim is to conserve various natural habitats, the biodiversity and also to provide space for outdoor experiences. There are 22 nature reserves in Enköping Municipality, they protect habitats such as eskers, areas for birds, woodlands and pastures. Some reserves have habitats that have to be managed through grazing, for example Hemsta Hagar and Vånsjöåsen. Since Sweden joined the EU, a nature conservation term has been added, Natura This is a network of valuable natural areas that is being built up in all EU countries. The aim is to ensure that a large number of different habitats and their typical species are conserved. 92
Svinnegarn hurch 2 There are few traces of the medieval pilgrimage church to be found in Svinnegarn hurch. It burned down in the 17th century and instead, it is Sweden s period as a great power and the 18th century that dominate the interior. Rich families from the area set up their coats of arms and paid for altar decorations and a pulpit. There is an interesting rune stone in the porch. The text describes Bagge, who was part of a Viking expedition under the command of Ingvar the Far-Travelled. This is was major expedition that headed east with over 30 ships from the Lake Mälaren area. They set off in 1036, but the expedition ended in disaster and only a few made it home, five years later. Most died of diseases in the Black Sea area. There are around twenty-five rune stones in the Lake Mälaren area that describe men who travelled together with Ingvar. We know that Bagge from Svinnegarn owned a ship and that it was his parents Tjälve and Holmlög who had the stone erected as a memorial to him. Hjulsta ekhagar EE2 By the shore of Hjulstafjärden, at Hjulsta Bridge, there are idyllic meadows that are characterised by massive, ancient oak trees. The area is divided into two parts by Road 55 so you just have to choose which one you want to visit first, but be careful when you cross the road, it is sometime very busy Ageing oak trees occupy a unique position with respect to biodiversity. They can play host to a multitude of often threatened species of insects, birds, lichen and fungi. The oak covered slopes at Hjulsta are home to the hermit beetle, which is threatened with extinction in Sweden, an exclusive creepy crawly that actually smells of leather. This spends its life in really massive hollow oaks that are growing in a sunny position. These are not found in that many places, which is why the hermit beetle is so rare. Whether you like beetles or not this spot is a real treat. Leave the car at the parking space by the main road and follow the small gravel road. On the right, you ll soon see a giant oak that is many hundreds of years old that is, unfortunately, squeezed in by some houses, but no less impressive as a result. After another couple of hundred metres, you arrive via a stile at the part of Hjulsta Ekhagar that is a nature reserve and Natura 2000 area. In the eastern part of the nature reserve on the other side of Road 55, you encounter an idyll; gently rolling moraine land with oaks, wild roses and a sea of flowers such as cowslip, maiden pink and common milkwort. A number of stone arrangements from the Iron Age indicate that we are not the first to appreciate this spot. If the weather is conducive, this is a great place for a picnic, with smooth areas of exposed rock that are inviting places to stop and rest. If you are lucky, the birdsong drowns out the noise of the cars racing along the road. You can hear birds such as common whitethroat, blackcap and thrush nightingale. 93

Gröneborg EE2 Land on Gröneborg, a small island in the mouth of the bay Svinnegarnsviken. Up on the flat, exposed top of the island you ll find the ruins of a medieval fort. There are three massive foundations made of cut stone inside a moat. According to legend, the 13th century night Joar Blå lived here. There are expansive views over the water and land from up at the fort and this is surely the reason why it was built here. The simplest way up to the fort is from the sandy beach to the south-west. There is a picnic area with barbecue facilities down buy the beach. There are a lot of adders on this small island so make sure you have proper shoes when you visit. Bryggholmen EE3 Bryggholmen is a charming island only 500 metres from the mainland. The island offers a peaceful mixture of nature, culture and activities, flavoured with a whole lot of bathing. There are plenty of small roads and marked paths that make it an inviting place for a ramble. The area consists of both open farmland and a lush broadleaved woodland in which there is lots of mistletoe, the northernmost range of which is Lake Mälaren. Photo: Enköping Municipality Bryggholmen is a charming Mälar island, just 500 meters from the mainland. Many nice paths to walk on. From the bridge the road leads up to the islands mansion. From the pier, the road leads up towards the island s manor house. Bryggholmen has a long and interesting history; for example, the German glass-blower Jost Hoffman was granted the privilege of building a glassworks on the island in It was closed down around fifty years later, but traces of this activity remain. 96
Lake Mälaren There are bird protection areas in many parts of Lake Mälaren. In these places it is forbidden to land or be in the area at certain times. This is indicated using a yellow/red sign with dates. The ban on access is usually from 1 April to 15 July. There is a good ramp to launch boats from at Koffsan. In the summer you can go on boat tours on Lake Mälaren. There are both day tours and cruises. The timetable for the Arnö ferry, Arnöleden, can be found at trafikverket.se Jet skis may only be used in general shipping lanes. The right to public access also applies on water. You are allowed to bath from the shore, operate a boat almost anywhere, tie up and spend the night in the boat, but not at private piers. Showing consideration for the surroundings is naturally just as important when you are on the water as it is on land The fishing is free as long as you use hand-held equipment. Enjoy Lake Mälaren, but show consideration for nature and the surroundings. Photo: Enköping Municipality 97
