The Creative Texts of Urban Residents: An Investigation of Methods in Architecture Research Carley Friesen and Amanda Frövenholt www.carleyfriesen.com / carleyfriesen@gmail.com www.amandafrovenholt.se / info@amandafrovenholt.se January 2012 5
The Creative Texts of Urban Residents: An Investigation of Methods in Architecture Research Ambition: To generate ideas about how urban residents can influence the development of their city through creative writing. To generate ideas around research methods in architecture using creative expression as a basic form of research. Mission: We will lift up ideas around how urban residents can affect their city s development through creating accounts of their experiences in a free form. Urban residents should not need to use formal language to describe their experiences, instead we will draw forth their inner language to express how the city they live in should perform. We present this way of gathering information from urban residents, as a new research method in architecture. In traditional research we often see statistics as the base for research in urban development. In this project we focus instead on the experience and artistic, creative expression as the base. This project is carried out in a small scale, as a precedent to a future, higher level project in the subject. We will test the feasibility of the project and at the same time highlight the issues to create interest among possible future financiers and partners. 6
Method: Through writing coaching and consultation we will inspire urban residents to write artistic texts with their starting point in the urban experience. We will then use the texts to analyze urban areas, and present architectural collages, illustrating how the areas are actually perceived by the urban residents. This will result in a public exhibition of both the texts and collages. After the exhibition we will plan for a documentation of the projects implementation and result. We are going to focus on a selected urban area, in this case Linnestaden in Göteborg, Sweden. We will use a random selection from the residents in Linnestaden. The residents will participate in individual sessions where they will receive inspirations, advice and coaching for their text with a connection to their urban experiences. The texts created through this process will be used as the background and basis for the architectural collages, and will be presented beside them in exhibition. The texts are going to be in free form, with their base in urban experiences, and will illuminate qualities of urban space. This means that the artistic texts could result in anything from an adventure story to a love letter. We are going to use artistic texts as a means for expression because everyone can tell their story about a space, but not everyone can draw a space. Text also gives the possibility to express all of the senses. The collages are also going to be in free form, with their base in the sensory experiences of the residents in urban environments. They will illustrate concrete spatial factors, while exploring sensory and emotional perceptions of the spaces. We are going to use artistic texts as a base for the collages, because in a unique way we create a multi-dimensional basis for the architectural collages including smells, tastes, textures, sights and sounds. 7
Hypothesis: The project will give new ideas around how city architects and other stakeholders can gather information about the city on a deeper level; we know that spatial factors affect our feelings and our perceptions and therefor we need a starting point for research based on experience. Our hypothesis is that city architects and other stakeholders, through this work, will see the city as a dynamic being, and can use fantasy, experiences and human sensations as a base, instead of seeing the city as a concrete construction which is understood the same by all people. We will investigate the idea about how urban residents can affect urban form, not solely through the frames of statistics and formal language, but instead in an artistic, and free way, giving attention to their experiences in everyday life. Our hypothesis is that this can also create a lust in urban residents to become more involved in future plans for urban change. They will develop a new way to talk about the city and architecture. They can in a simple way take part in the public discussions about architecture without using complicated formal language. Through this project we will highlight a way that city architects and stakeholders and gather more inspiring material to use in their work. In this project we investigate a new method within architectural research. The investigation is directly connected to artistic expression and becomes both informative and inspirational to work from. Our hypothesis is that in the future we can develop this to be a useful and relevant method in urban design. 8
Personal Merits The project is grounded in two people working together with two distinct skill sets; a personal language developer together with an architect. We share our experience as the artistic director for developing the exhibition.
