2 1. Introduction and Definitions This report includes a compilation of the 100 largest employers in the Gothenburg region. The list presents the 100 largest companies by name and number of employees, and also includes tables presenting the biggest public sector employers. The statistics refer to the number of employees in December Definitions: Employee Employees include people for whom employers are responsible for withholding and reporting income tax (principal employer) o who are currently employed; o for whom wages paid (income from work) per year are estimated to exceed a basic amount (the basic amount for 2011 is SEK 42,800), o or who are employed as substitutes for more than three months. The term employee does not cover individuals who: o are employed with subsidized wages or are seasonally employed etc., o or who at the time of the survey are on extended leave of absence or long-term absence due to illness (three months or longer), o or are employed as substitutes for less than three months. The Gothenburg Region The statistics cover the 13 municipalities that make up the Gothenburg Region, namely: Ale, Alingsås, Göteborg, Härryda, Kungsbacka, Kungälv, Lerum, Lilla Edet, Mölndal, Partille, Stenungsund, Tjörn and Öckerö. Company The statistics show the number of employees per company. The term company normally means a joint stock company with a corporate identity number. A company may have several places of employment within the region. Municipal authorities and government agencies are not included but are reported separately in section 3. Sources The Swedish Central Business Register (CFAR) lists places of employment and numbers of employees. The statistics cover individual municipalities and are divided into approximately 800 industries, thus providing detailed information from which specific statistics can be determined. Source errors The CFAR is updated with information from the National Tax Board, including changes of address and telephone numbers provided by Svensk Adressändring AB, with Statistics Sweden's (SCB's) own surveys and feedback from other SCB and external users. Statistics regarding the number of employees in the business register is based largely on SCB's own surveys. The surveys are sent out once a year and businesses themselves report how many employees there are within their respective organizations. In cases where SCB does not receive a report from a company the figures from the previous year are used which means there may be a degree of uncertainty in the figures. 1

The 100 Largest Companies in the Gothenburg Region Industrial companies are the biggest in the Gothenburg region and the single largest company is the Volvo Car Corporation with around 11,000 employees. This is followed by Volvo Trucks AB with around 4,100 employees, and SKF with approximately 2,700. Strong growth within the automotive industry has meant that both Volvo Cars and Volvo Trucks recruited heavily during AstraZeneca is another company that reported an increase in the number of employees during the past year. Increases were noted in all size groups, but the greatest increases in the numbers of employees were in the smallest companies. This group comprises companies with between 1 and 4 employees. Just over two out of every three employees are in the private sector. It was also chiefly the private sector that recruited most employees during 2011, with an increase of 4 percent. 2

4 The 100 largest companies in the Gothenburg region have a total of around 86,400 employees, which means that one in five employed citizens works within one of these companies. The equivalent proportion for the 10 largest companies is around 7.6 percent. In both cases the long-term trend is downwards, which means that dependency on the largest companies has fallen. However, during 2011 in particular the biggest companies recruited employees to such an extent that the trend is currently upwards. Municipal Authorities and Government Agencies The previous list only includes the 100 largest companies in the Gothenburg region, but in addition to these there are a number of major public sector employers in the region. Trends in the public sector were stable during 2011 and the proportion of total employment was 32.5 percent, which means that just under one in three employees in the Gothenburg region works in the public sector. Of these, 18.5 percent work within the municipal sector; the equivalent percentages for government agencies and county authorities are 7.5 percent and 6.5 percent respectively. Diagram 2: Municipal, county and government operations; proportion of all employees in the Gothenburg region, Source: CFAR 2011 The largest employer in the Gothenburg region is the Gothenburg Municipality with almost 35,000 employees followed by Västra Götaland's county council with 26,500 employees. These two employers are the largest even if the largest private-sector employers are included. The biggest state employer is the University of Gothenburg with around 5,400 employees. 6

12 A Short Description of Business Region Göteborg Business Region Göteborg AB (BRG) works to increase sustainability and employment in the Gothenburg region's 13 municipalities. We are a wholly owned, non-profit subsidiary of Göteborgs Kommunala Förvaltnings AB, which is in turn wholly owned by the City of Gothenburg. We assist established companies and start-ups alike with their investment and growth ambitions. As a neutral partner we are able to contribute to a good business climate for tomorrow's trade and industry in the Gothenburg region. Among other things, Business Region Göteborg runs a number of business developments and projects that seek to increase growth in strategic areas. The focus is on industries that are strong within the region. We also have well-developed contacts with many interesting regions in the world at large. Enterprise Europe Network, which specializes in the EU and opportunities there, provides important help to small and medium-sized companies with international outlooks. Business Region Göteborg also works with company development through the Expedition Framåt project, which helps firms ranging from sole traders to medium-sized companies with their growth ambitions. We also focus on new businesses and entrepreneurship. Our set-up and investor service can provide both Swedish and foreign companies with a variety of customized solutions for everything from company start-ups and expansions to relocation and recruiting.
